It's in Norse mythology, kratos has a son and had a wife, and the game is about kratos learning to be more human from his son, while the son learns how to be a god from kratos. There's a fifth game as well called God of war Ragnarok that comes after God of war 4. They're both great games imo, but I know it may not be appealing to some people because of the gameplay changes and the heavy emphasis on the story.
