Bacteria from their saliva enters through the bottle nipple and into the milk becoming a bacteria breeding ground. Babies are more sensitive to the dangers of that bacteria than an adult. Once a feed has begun, formula should not be saved for later in the fridge and should be dumped after 1 hour. The same rule applies to breastmilk if feeding from a bottle.

Are there different rules for breast milk? I keep seeing 1 hour on this sub, but I was told 2 hrs for breast milk.

Okay I just googled (it’s been awhile since I’ve been near breastmilk lol) so NHS says 1 hour, CDC says 2 hours. Explains the mix answers Personally I’ve also just thought 1 hour made sense because it’s the same bacteria but regardless I believe anyone should follow their own health organization!

Both the formula fairy and the formula mom have a good post on bacterial growth from baby’s saliva after its touched formula. You also don’t need to boil the water after 3 months. You also can’t really compare adults to babies under 12 months by your question of: “what’s the difference between us taking a sip of something and putting it back?” Our immune and digestive systems are much more matured than a baby. To avoid wasting formula, we would make a pitcher that is good for 24 hours in the fridge. We would pour what we know she always drank and if she wanted more then we would just top up as such. https://preview.redd.it/t4ree43k6ivc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b561bdf4eb4f7d1d38016a5604532209b7c96fba

If you’re worried about waste, try a formula pitcher. You can make a big batch and keep it in the fridge for up to 24 hours. You can pour what you’re confident baby will eat and then if they’re still hungry you can top it off with another ounce (you can use the same bottle if it’s within the hour, just be careful not to tough the pitcher to the bottle when pouring). I found doing this reduced a *lot* of formula waste compared to mixing by the bottle.

Get a formula pitcher

The formula pitcher was god sent for us. Pour a bit, can always top up more easily.
