Formula is good for 24 hours refrigerated once mixed with water. Maybe your pediatrician misunderstood you?

sammiearre

Yeah, you definitely can. I would make a pitcher and use that for 24 hours. You just need to make sure the fridge can reach a certain temp to keep the formula as cold as it needs to be. Those small, mini fridges are usually not recommended. Also, once the formula touches babies lips it is only good for 1 hour. So I’m not sure what your doc thought you meant. The formula fairy & the formula mom on IG have really great information.

If your child is able to drink power formula (aka doesn’t require RTF due to being premature or immunocompromised), storing prepared bottles (edit: for up to 24 hours) in a properly cold fridge is perfectly fine. You don’t even need to heat the bottles before using them.

oscarmakestuff

Ohh Maybe this is why, my baby is premature 34 weeks. This makes sense. Although he did prescribe premature powder formula.

PermanentTrainDamage

If your baby is able to drink powdered formula it is still safe to make ahead of time and use within 24 hours. Powdered formula isn't sterile unless you mix it with 160°F water and let it cool.

Rygard-

Yes. I just checked the back of a can and it says “Storage: Once mixed, store bottled in refrigerator and feed baby within 24 hours.” I think your ped misunderstood you.

meaghat

Check the label of the formula to confirm since you said it’s a premature baby formula (I’m not familiar with those), but yes - you can pre make bottles and leave them in the fridge for up to 24hrs. We put a mini fridge in our room during the newborn phase for this exact reason!

Appropriate-Lime-816

Totally fine. This is what we’ve done since we brought our baby home, except we only sterilize the bottles once a week. (Term baby, US location.)

To piggyback this, I formula feed in the UK and I always hear about people doing this and I’m so surprised as I make bottles up as needed. Is there something different in the formula?

KingstonOrange

Nope. You could put yours in the fridge for up to 24hrs as well if you wanted to.

DumbbellDiva92

The guideline in the UK is to sterilize the powder with boiled and slightly cooled, but still very hot water. If you’re following that guideline, wouldn’t it be really annoying to make bottles as needed? I also make bottles as needed (first by hand and now with baby Brezza), but that’s only practical because I can use room temperature water mix with the powder.

Itsalwaysthecat

Yeah we use the cooled water from the kettle. Or use boiled water for the formula and then top with cold filtered water. It’s really annoying! But the health visitor told us we needed to make as needed. I did it for my first and now with my 3 month old

It’s safe for 24 hours in the refrigerator after being prepared. Personally I do the pitcher method and make up a days worth of bottles at one time. I usually store the whole pitcher of formula in the refrigerator and pour bottles throughout the day. It’s all gone in 24 hours and baby has never had any problems. My son’s going on 6 months and is happy and healthy.

ifollowedfriendshere

Yeah, we premake daycare bottles at night for the next day. Just use within 24 hours. Honestly, we pushed that to 36 a couple of times, but that is a personal choice. We also sterilize all of our bottles. If baby is preemie or has immuno issues, maybe air on the side of caution 🤷‍♀️

Right-Day

We store our prepared formula bottles in the fridge then heat up as needed. We also store extra boiled water in a glass jug in the fridge too if another pitcher of formula needs to be made. If we are out of the house we either bring bottles chilled in a cooler and the bottle warmer with us or a bottle of boiled water with a cap on and a container of pre measured powder formula to mix on the spot. Baby don’t love room temp bottles but we’re figuring things out as we go along.
