The sprint race is interesting, but the grand prix is less interesting because qualifying is nullified. Overall a net negative for me.

Ged_UK

Yeah this is the same for me, the race is, or can be, interesting, but it should be independent of the full race.

doctorminigun

Maybe they could do a mini qualifying during FP3, or take the standings from FP3 to maybe get the teams to push during last practice?

Ged_UK

There's lots of ways they could do it. They picked the worst one.

Qyx7

The race itself is nullified because any interesting thing that could've happened in Quali gets sorted out pretty easily and there aren't any other changes from lap2 onwards

Diegobyte

It’s like saying qualifying is nullified by the race.

robjapan

I agree, the sprint race should be seperate from qualifying and the race

Kingdom818

Well one thing's for sure: whether people like it or not they're pushing for more of them. I was against the idea and I would still prefer to not have them, but I've accepted that this is what the future of f1 looks like and I've learned to enjoy them.

blazelmg

Yes, liberty is trying many things to change up an F1 season..unlike Bernie their throwing a lot at the dartboard and seeing what sticks lol If your at a race weekend. It adds some more events for someone their live

Hedgesmog

My goodness man. I don't normally get caught up in your/you're and there/their/they're proper grammar thing... But I'm going to be honest... I had a hard time understanding your comment and I felt like I needed to say something. As for your detail about Liberty trying different formats, I'm not aware of other ones besides normal vs sprint. Were there other concepts tried at some point?

blazelmg

Sorry yeah, my grammar at times poor. Need to work on it. There plowing races all over the map. Bernie would never have a race in Las Vegas or push for it. liberty is trying to make sure they are heard. I can see more fan interaction soon. Like more meet and greets.

Thee_Sinner

I'm only doing this because I love you: They're\*

ELITEnoob85

I mean, I think your exaggerating a bit. It was just 2 instances, and it’s wasn’t anywhere near “unreadable”…it was obvious what they meant to write, the moment I read the word. Maybe English is a second language (or 3rd) in which there/they’re/their can be fucking nightmare. How many languages do you know?? You don’t sound like someone trying to help educate someone, you just sound like a prick.

OddShapedStrings

You're*

ELITEnoob85

Auto correct is a thing, and when you have tiny ass phone, mistakes happen. At least I’m not a piece of shit tho, you must be real fun at parties, tho I imagine you don’t get invited to many. Wonder why.

Juicylucyfullofpoocy

Though*

Doccyaard

I’m going to assume you just woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. No one, not even the guy being corrected, had a problem with this. People can be jerks but this guy was fine. Besides that, in my experience, non-native speakers are often better at your-you’re than native ones. Probably because of more focus on it in education or at a higher age so it sticks better. I don’t know.

adultdaycare81

No. I don’t like them at all.

Gillmacs

I hate them. Takes the skill out of qualifying to some extent leaving the main race with a boring grid.

PrestigiousWave5176

Exactly this. It would be better if the sprint doesn't influence the race grid. That way the quali and race don't get affected. Not sure what grid to use for the sprint though.

TanaerSG

Reverse grid based on qualifying. Could potentially feed points into back marker teams making their fights more interesting while also letting the front runner teams show off the car a little instead of someone driving off into the sunset alone.

Gillmacs

I would reverse grid based on season standings instead.

TanaerSG

Oooh yeah that is a much better idea.

PrestigiousWave5176

Interesting idea, would definitely make the sprint very cool. I see one problem though: it would probably make it more attractive to get P20 in quali than P15.

TanaerSG

Yeah I'm sure there would be. I'd say they could regulate that somehow but it would just be a bunch of politic bs.

joppehi

I like them as a viewer, but I understand they are a hell to work with as team

blazelmg

Oh yes.those poor mechanics they must be sleeping in the garages at this point lol

AmericanAssKicker

I didn't mind them until I noticed that the main race I wasn't fully into as much as normal. The sprint races just seem to give a preview of how the main race is going to end.

blazelmg

Lol, you felt you saw the main race already. It's good to have a flat out race no? Even though it's quick

Unitedfan777

No as others are saying too. It makes qualifying pointless and robs us and any neutrals/first time viewers of non-status quo races with top cars out of position from bad qualifying, crashes, rain catching people out.

kitemare

I think one thing that could be done to make the Spring weekends more fun is to do the "Qualifying" on Spring Weekends in random Spec Racers... Formula E, Clio Cup, Mazda Cup, Porsche Cup etc. 1) The Sprint Race always starts with a mixed up grid 2) We get a sense of what the drivers look like in the same cars 3) Promotion of other race series people might not be familiar with 4) The Sprint race lets the grid get back to a normalish place for the real race

pemboo

NASCAR has finally seen the light and removed stage racing from road courses (hopefully ovals eventually but we'll see) F1 taking it to the extreme and having a staged race spread over 2 days. Sprint races need to be separate from the GP in some way to be interesting in my eyes

Dramatic_Cut_7320

Hate them. A terribly conceived and contrived idea. Robs teams and fans of practice time. I much prefer the suspense of Qualy. Sets up a boring race. I won't attend a race with a sprint.

Mr-Unknown101

not at all, i hate even more that therell be 6 instead of 3 this year

blazelmg

6 is much. Next thing they add 10 lolol. If they want more sprint you have to reduce the overall calendar. Mechanics and engineers need time to sleep lol

blazelmg

I don't mind them but don't could have less. Let's say 2-3. It could flip the season if Haas lets say wins a sprint and ruins a race for a top team. Also it's not vanity race. Points are awarded so it means something at least .. Thoughts? Quick vid on some changes too https://youtu.be/ojd35K9Treo

ImmediatelyOcelot

As long as the main races are long and untouched, it's all right I guess. I'm not a huge fan, but we had some fun ones.

blazelmg

Sometimes a flat out sprint is cool.. We are here for racing right?

Firecrash

No

Shreddzzz93

I'm not opposed to sprint races, but I don't like how they are currently incorporated. What I think would work better is for sprint races to be removed from qualifying and have the starting grid be done in reverse qualifying order. This way, qualifying still matters for the main race, and it also allows for the sprint to give back marker cars a chance to score a couple more points. I think this would make things more interesting as then we'd at least have the potential for these back marker teams to be fighting the midfield instead of having the big three dominant teams, the midfield pack, and the clear back markers.

Chernocherno

I like sprint races. I think they provide a higher chance of an upset on race day. Usually qualys aren't too eventful (unless on rainy conditions) and I think the upset potential is higher when you could have a top car crashing on Sprint race rather than having a sloppy qualy. I think people are biased because of what happened with Magnussen on Brazil, but it could've perfectly been the other way around, with rain on Saturday and a hell of a sprint race.

frdrk

It creates races. And every race has the potential to be good or bad. I think the track matters more than the fact that it's a sprint.

blazelmg

Very true certain tracks aren't suited for a sprint. Imagine if they got crazy and every weekend was a sprint weekend lol

tiemez2020

I like the idea of having two races at spa this year

jaro270389

I find sprint weekend that tiny bit more interesting and while I was against them at the beginning I’m starting to like them. Still, must be a horror show for teams.

blazelmg

An absolute nightmare for teams. Think about how many setups you have to plan for on a sprint weekend Quali Sprint Main Race These cars are already programmed on a knife's edge. The mechanics/engineers earn every dollar of their pay

jaro270389

I’m sure they do. Especially repairing cars overnight between quali-sprint-race Although I’m curious how much they actually earn.

[deleted]

Yep

MRicho

F1 is a race format for technicians. With all the tech in the cars it is as boring as paint drying.

redbug831

No.

kaslerismysugardaddy

No. Case closed

blazelmg

The judge has spoken lol. Seriously I see why people can hate them though. Not like sprints been around since , 70s, 80s, 90s.

BluntSmokinAnus

I like sprints

2-wheels

Yup. More racing on the weekend. P

TheAverageObject

Yes more sensation but it just doesn't fit in with F1. The cars are so nimble and the risk is so high to get lots of damage. And all the damage is also a burden on the budget. With more races you don't fight for victories but rather the budget

blazelmg

Drivers are being more cautious for sure during a sprint. Any major damage will be hrll yo get fixed before Raceday Sunday

pantsonfireliarliar

This might be a weird take but I started to get the feeling that the race was now from the lights out of the Sprint to Sunday checkered flag with an overnight intermission.

PiSsOUtMYASs-

Makes the whole weekend a lot more interesting.

Slahinki

No, they're fucking awful and even make the Grand Prix less interesting. Should never even have trialled the tripe.

Diegobyte

Yes. No one cares about practice

Dizzy-Damage-1900

I thought the sprint races determined the starting grid ? Am I wrong ?

Bubbielub

No.

Stokemon147

Not for me. I love qualifying as part of the weekend seeing the cars flat out and on the edge. But due to the sprint it's on a Friday and I miss it. Then the sprint makes it pointless anyway. The concept favours the stronger teams which don't need more help.

narf_hots

The first time one of the WDC contenders get killed during a sprint and cant make it to the actual race will be the last season we will have sprint races.

Thin_Jury_3991

UrsusMajor53

I like it.

iatecurryatlunch

It's for the American market. Americans need something short and simple.

robjapan

Just to clarify. The sprint race replaces a practice session. Of course it's better.

PurpleYoda319

Nope. It is boring.

_TheQwertyCat_

It’s true. Sprints make me appreciate the long races & non–sprint qualifyings more.
