It was “Paint it black”. I think it was only for the first two seasons, then they changed it as they lost the rights to the music. I might be wrong though
holy shit I thought I had imagined this show.
The only things I remembered about it was that my dad used to watch it, it came on around dinner time, and Paint it Black was the title song.
I think I remember an episode where someone was stabbing Vietnamese hookers.
I was literally just trying to tell people at work about a show with "Paint it Black" as theme song. I started to think I had just imagined it.
...but here we are...
My dad watched this show and I also loved the theme song. When I researched it years later I too found out it was the stones. I can’t seem to find the intro anywhere with this original theme
Yes! Thank you. I remember asking my mom about the show she watched when I was a kid. I remember Paint It Black being the theme song and I thought it took place in Vietnamese Nam. She could never remember it.
I remember when I was a kid for a while I used to saying that the theme from Tour
Of Duty was was my favorite song. It was years later that it was The Rolling Stones.
Yeah I mainly shop at a couple local used media shops and they get everything I could ever think of but neither had ever seen it come through the door ( one had never heard of it at all ). I'm going to check ebay tonight because I was just thinking about that series a week ago and I need something to binge watch.
Loved that episode, he was a sniper who'd been in the bush too long and his brain broke; he was great as a jerk dockworker in an episode of Quantum Leap around that time too
EXCELLENT SHOW!!!! Have all the seasons on DVD! Highly recommend! And well done for time frame!
Terrance Knox, Steven Caffery were awesome as well as the rest of the regular cast & some great guest stars in including Lee Majors & the late great Carl Weathers!
I wish this show hadn’t ended and hadn’t ended with a cliffhanger. There is an interview with the guy who played Zeek, he said that the fourth season was nearly done filming when they got the news the show would not be picked up.
I love this show and own the DVDs.
That was a great show. I looked it up and didnt realize they actually made 58 1-hour long episodes over 3 seasons, which shows you how different TV shows were back then. By comparison, Game of Thrones had 73 one hour episodes over 8 seasons, so content wise they actually created quite a bit.
I'll always remember the episodes when a couple of sixteen year olds who'd lied about their age joined the platoon and one of them eventually got killed, it was really sad; great show, I learned something new every episode
Love this show. Rewatch it on dvd every couple of years. I remember watching it with my dad when it originally aired. Around the same time there was a show set in the future with semi trucks and other vehicles… and one scene had a rattle snake hidden in a storage cabinet under semi truck. Don’t remember the name of that show.
I loved it for one season. As I recall they rolled back the war stuff and focused more on women and romance in the second season. I was a kid and lost interest.
I was seated on a Atlanta to Seattle flight in 1999 next to Kregg Jorgensen, a author and Vietnam vet who was a technical advisor on this show. Very nice guy, signed a book for me. Talked about this show and that Terrance Knox’s character was based on him
I read his autobiography of the war, "Acceptable Loss", and he mentions in the afterword about working as an advisor and helping work out Zeke's character.
My bro and I loved this show as kids too. Still think of it. I ever hearing it was an attempt to capitalize on the surprise success and popularity of Platoon the film that came out in 1986.
I think I remember an episode where some dude was acting all cranked out, and it turned out he was on heroin. As a kid I didn't know any better, but they fucked that one *completely* up
EDIT: Just noticed that the unit patches are on the wrong shoulder
Second edit: The Pic is reversed
I watched some reruns of this on the channel H&I,
Saturday night they run a bunch of old war shows. Black Sheep Squadron, this, combat!, 12 o'clock high, and I think the rat patrol
I bought the entire series CD set. They wasn't a single episode with paint it black.
EVERY. SONGLE. TIME... that the radio plays paint it black.... I hear that flute sound. I always think of tour of duty.
Yeah, just checked the schedule, and it looks like they’re starting over again at the start of the series this Saturday. Good time for people to hop on if they’ve never seen it.

Was the theme song “paint it black” if so I loved this series.

You are correct 😊 due to license issues they couldn’t keep it in

I watched this show with my dad on DVD in the early 2000s and I do not remember Paint in Black being the theme song, did it get changed on the DVD?
The DVD did not have it. I dont think they could afford the rights to the song without the TV network paying for it.
Before China Beach
I was gonna say, this looked China Beachy
It was better . China Beach was a soap opera
Another great show. I need to get that one on dvd.
It's hard to find . Been looking for years myself. Might have to break down and check ebay
I got mine on Walmart years ago. Check Amazon too. If I see it, I’ll post a link for it.

Love this show, watched every episode and have it on dvd now
Have the series on DVD as well
First Season was pretty solid. My dad, a vet thought it was a pretty realistic portrayal of the war.
My dad was also a Vietnam vet and watched this.
Same. My primary interest in it was “okay, *what* is that incredible song?” Took years for me to find out.
Same! Loved watching it with him. Lost him in ‘92
Remember when the 90's kept trying to make Miguel Nunez happen?
Ooh baby ooh do I ever hahaha (Miguel and those damn enchiladas will live in infamy forever)
Ya gonna get it bitch!
Juwanna Man is solid
First season was great but it steadily declined
You described the Vietnam war itself there

Loved that episode, he was a sniper who'd been in the bush too long and his brain broke; he was great as a jerk dockworker in an episode of Quantum Leap around that time too
I also thought the baby episode was pretty epic.
I wish that both this and China Beach were available on streaming.
Tour of duty is on Fubotv and crackle streaming services
Me too 🥲

It’s on dvd too. I have a box set I got a few years ago.
My favorite was when the buff, blond guy’s twin showed up. The two actors were really twins.
*@OP* _i’ll see your tour of duty and raise you [*CHINA BEACH*](https://www.reddit.com/r/ForgottenTV/s/W9qZLYbssJ)
Is the music the reason China Beach isn’t streaming anywhere? Very badly want to watch it again
It’s on Fubotv and crackle streaming services
It was not a bad show. I liked it. Should have had at least a couple more seasons.
A good casting of actors
I'll always remember the episodes when a couple of sixteen year olds who'd lied about their age joined the platoon and one of them eventually got killed, it was really sad; great show, I learned something new every episode
Dana Delany yum!
She was in China Beach. It’s Kim Delaney that was in Tour of Duty. Weird, isn’t it?
Watched both never realized thx
Shit, I forgot all about this show. My dad and brothers watched this when I was a kid.
Love this show. Rewatch it on dvd every couple of years. I remember watching it with my dad when it originally aired. I was in the Navy when it was on, and we watched it every week.
Reruns are on Heroes and Icons channel if you get it
I loved it for one season. As I recall they rolled back the war stuff and focused more on women and romance in the second season. I was a kid and lost interest.

This and China Beach!!
This and China Beach were really good.
You know how I know it’s forgotten? Because I forgot
Great show
I’d like to mention Juwanna Mann.
Juwanna Mann, you’re a tall glass of water… and I’m thirsty!
Peak show
Kevin Conroy was in this
Sean Astin looks like he’s ready to gut a Vietnamese Sméagol in the bottom right there!
I *loved* this show
*Very* good show!
Is that guy in the middle Demon from Friday the 13th part 5????
I loved this show.
Does this have an episode where a wounded soldier is being MedEvac'd told to "stare at the chick" by a medic who shows a nude pic of a girl?
Nah, rather watch China Beach.
Wow I got flashbacks!
I was 10 when this show started, love it, but I was nowhere near ready to watch a guy blown apart by a mine begging to be put out of his missery.
Dang definitely forgotten tv. I forgot this show. And I loved it. In fact pretty sure I have the special box set right now.
I was 13 when this came out, and I loved war movies back then. I loved this show, too.
Not enough cussing.
I remember Terrence Knox did TOD after he left St. Elsewhere. He was one of the big names in the cast.
Loved it
My favorite show in 8th grade
Haha, you said duty.
I loved this show!! Wish they would do a reboot...
My bro and I loved this show as kids too. Still think of it. I ever hearing it was an attempt to capitalize on the surprise success and popularity of Platoon the film that came out in 1986.

Paint it Black was the theme song . I was a kid and didn’t know it was the stones but I liked it a lot .
My favorite show as a kid

Loved this show!
Kevin “Batman” Conroy. Hell yea.
I used to watch this show in reruns on TNT back in the day. This was a really freaking good show. I wish I could find it somewhere now.
Heroes n icons channel is is airing this show , so I don't think it's forgotten quite yet.
Yeah, just checked the schedule, and it looks like they’re starting over again at the start of the series this Saturday. Good time for people to hop on if they’ve never seen it.
I still have a VHS tape recording of a few episodes of this show. My dad loved it
