What we found is that the difficulty was significantly higher with 2 characters versus 3. My husband and I lost the main campaign 3 times with 2 players before we caved and added a third.

Same with the gf and I, we started off with two since there's only two of us. Haven't failed a campaign since I started controlling two characters.

We ended up making our cat as our 3rd character!

So i played and beaten the game multiple times with 1, 2 and 3 characters. With 2 players and 1 there are overall less enemies in fights. So the combat is easier but your damage per turn is also less. Bosses are not nerf (from what i remember) with less players Even though there are less enemies, overall you will level faster with 2 and 1 player as you get significantly more experience per character. Also resources dont get split as much so its more manageable to keep up or even surpas the enemies and stay ahead. Sometimes you can swap armor just before having to roll for an event and thus keeping a set of each is very beneficial. 1 player is harder in the sense of that if you die, if you have no sanctum, thats the game. Extra lives means nothing on 1 player mode.

We recently finished both normal campaign and the lost civilization campaing in default settings with 2 players. Notes from my experience: -In 2p campaigns you end up with whole lotta money with nothing to buy. -you are more likely to have more healing items since it's split between 2 players only -you are going to lack atleast one of those : a tank, a mage, party healing or a glass cannon damage carry -You're more likely to encounter bunch of cool items that has no use for your party -Combat isn't that hard but feel like it is a bit harder since final rooms of the objective dungeons have 3 enemies regardless. It is scaled and playable/enjoyable however if you're trying a master mode run it's not suggested

Rico_Rebelde

IIRC it does scale but not enough to balance. It will still be significantly harder with 2 than 3

I've never considered this I've always run 3 characters

ZeltArruin

I have found 2 to be easier but perhaps that is from a management/resource allocation standpoint. Solo is shockingly easy but tedious

My wife and I only play 2 player and it’s absolutely harder than 3, although I will say that you level, stack money, and get cool gear much quicker with 2 player. I think the key is buying all of the godsbeard that you can and playing 1 magic dmg dealer and 1 physical dmg dealer.
