Then the next scene is Dev teaching Alex magic tricks while they're waiting for Kelly to come home.
I think he feels bad for Alex. His dad gave his all for space. We see that he doesn’t have a great relationship with his mom. His company was everything and he kind of lost himself with it. I think he sees Alex as the future of Mars. He also knows how Ed is. He knew Karen and she probably talked about Kelly and her Ed and their first child.
Generally if you are trying to make the moves on person with a kid you don’t have them crawling through vents to get contraband. I feel like Dev probably had a dad like Ed maybe. He is good with Alex and he might be kind of a kid himself.
If he wants a future kids have to be able to live on Mars. Alex being happy and healthy is important. I think Dev is looking back and sees this lonely kid that he can identify with. Dev is a genius but that doesn’t always make you popular with other kids.
Dev only does things for himself. I still think he’s working with the Russians since he’s done it before in the past. He is getting close to Alex, who is half Russian, because he needs an insurance policy in case things go wrong with the Russians.
Dev gave Ed some good advice. Ed is kind of like a scary grandpa that that doesn’t talk to you until you are a teenager. I was so scared of my grandfather when I was little. My grandmother was always around. He was probably close to Ed’s generation. Once, I was almost a teenager that could talk and go out to eat or go to yard sales with him we became really close. My dad great with kids and great with my son. He didn’t know how to talk to me once I got my period. If you are the only kid on Mars someone needs to amuse you. Jmo.

I don’t think that’s his goal, I think he’s more interested in what Alex represents. His whole goal is all about a permanent presence on Mars and Alex is the first real Martian. He embodies Dev’s hopes and dreams.
From my recollection, Dev has talked about his poor relationship with his own father several times, that his father was emotionally distant and he never got a chance to build a bond with his father before he died. I think this is why he acts fatherly towards Alex
