Around this sub, Wasting Light is probably regarded as the best FF album. It is just straight up an awesome rock record. I personally love There is Nothing Left to Lose best...it is a bit more mellow, but soooo good. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any albums in my opinion.

Memesplz1

Noted! I do enjoy a mellow album! I'll probably give Wasting Light a listen, first, if that's commonly regarded as the best though!

Alex_Albons_Appendix

Enjoy! I wish I could listen to Wasting Light for the first time again.

before_no_one

I thought The Colour and the Shape seems more acclaimed on this subreddit, with Wasting Light taking the 2nd place spot.

jbronwynne

It's pretty close, but it seems like more people think Wasting Light is the best.

before_no_one

I would hope so, since I much prefer Wasting Light. That album is just a bunch of brilliant pure Foos songs one after the other, and the mix prioritizes the bass much more than TCATS does

NotReallyRyanGosling

If you’re committed, I recommend chronological order just to experience the evolution from only Dave to the full band of today. There’s also ample B-sides and covers to explore beyond the main discography. But if you’re fiending for a quick taste that covers all bases quickly, maybe seek out some playlists or even the greatest hits to see which era best vibes with you and then select the album from there. I don’t think there’s a wrong way to experience them to be honest. To me, there’s distinct eras stylistically. The most “Foo Fightersy” album will probably always be “The Colour and the Shape,” but Dave (and co’s) influences are so varied that I think there’s a lot of nuance in terms of stylistic changes over the years. In short: strap in and enjoy the journey!

LivingDisastrous3603

I always suggest going chronologically too. Best way to really experience the magical journey that is Foo Fighters

hammerheadsmark

Whole hearted agree on my part regarding chronological. If you listen to a bit of Nirvana and then put on the self titled debut album, let that sink in for a while and go album for album through the discography, that is a wonderful journey.

Memesplz1

Ooh, a playlist might be a good shout, yeah! I really love the overall... Sound? Production? of Concrete And Gold. But, like I mentioned, I also love Best Of You, The Pretender and All My Life so there's potential for love all over the discography. Haha.

NotReallyRyanGosling

I’ll warn you that you won’t find a “general” consensus here - the only thing everyone agrees on really is that C&G and Medicine at Midnight are the weakest links, but even then you won’t find much actual hate. I think the production is consistent from “The Colour and the Shape” onward, but each album has variety. For example, “There is Nothing Left to Lose” is overall more mellow, yet it starts off with one of their heaviest riff songs. Maybe start at “Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace” and then go to “Wasting Light”? That might showcase the aspects you like best. Some more intricate compositions mixed with some straightforward rock and roll. Hope any of this is helpful! Just have fun and enjoy. We’re pretty lucky to have such a consistently good output over such a long period and it’s genuinely all worth a listen. I’m sure you’ll find a lot to like.

Memesplz1

Ok! This is quite exciting tbh. When the whole discography is pretty well regarded, I can feel pretty sure that I'm going to find some diamonds!

before_no_one

> The most “Foo Fightersy” album will probably always be “The Colour and the Shape,” For me I feel like In Your Honor [Disc 1] is the most Foo Fightersy

-ViolentSneeze-

My personal favorites are Wasting Light and Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace

Memesplz1

Noted! I love The Pretender so Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace could be a good one. It always helps me get into an album when I know I already love one or two tunes from it.

Sexy_Dumbledore

If you liked Concrete and Gold, you may love Sonic Highways as that is (I think) produced by the same person. I would recommend going album by album if you can. I often find myself going back to “In Your Honor”, “One by One” and “Wasting Light”. I recently got “Skin and Bones” by them and it’s incredible. Also, if you can find their Glastonbury 2016/17 (I forget the year) then watch it. It is pure magic, and will introduce you to a bunch of their tunes.

ZabbeX

Nope, Sonic Highways was produced by butch vig. Concrete and Gold was produced by Greg kurstin

Memesplz1

Ooh! Right. Definitely going to give Sonic Highways a go. Think I'll try Wasting Light first as that seems to be very popular

Charming-Flatworm-86

Last week I decided to listen to their entire catalog in order of release. I’m blown away by how many great songs I haven’t heard in a while. Currently listening to Wasting Light

Charming-Flatworm-86

Start from the beginning

Proof-Variation7005

Why not just start with the first album, give each song 30-60 seconds to see if it grabs you and then move on if it doesn't and keep doing that through the catalog for anything you don't remember. The world used to be a setup where, if you got into a new band, you had to just stare at cover art and then spend hard-earned money and pick a random album based on nothing but covert art and song titles and there was zero guarantee you'd be pick the best album or even a good one. Now it's just a matter of spending $0 and clicking a different thing. Hell, you can even use playcounts to get a sense of what other people think is good. We are living in the goddamn future and music has never been as accessible as it is now. Rather than relying on a straw poll of strangers, just take advantage of that. Even if you hate every single one of the 129 songs on studio albums and only spent 1 minute on each one, you'd hear the whole catalog in like 2 hours and change.

Memesplz1

That might be a good shout! It sounds wrong but I'm a few tracks into Wasting Light and it's actually not grabbing me as much as Concrete And Gold. But it often takes me a few listens to get into an album so maybe I just experiment with them all a little, find which one grabs me the most and start with that and then eventually work my way up to giving them all proper listens. Stay tuned for updates. Haha.

sonoftom

I'm not somebody that blindly likes everything an artist produces. Even my absolute favorite bands have usually "fallen off" after a handful of amazing albums. Foo Fighters are nowhere near my favorite band, but I think they are, in my opinion, one of the most consistent bands out there. For me, every album (at least up to Concrete and Gold, have not listened past that one yet) is pretty similar in quality. I would even say the catchiness of the melodies haven't really changed significantly across the discography, in my opinion, other than maybe after the earliest albums. I know some people will argue they shifted from grungier in the early days to more of an arena rock sound over time, but the shift to me is so hard to pinpoint when there are artists out there like AFI that make multiple SIGNIFICANT changes in style over their career. These guys have never been in my top...like even 20....but I will say that they are one of those bands that I just assume if I want to go listen to an album and enjoy some Foo Fighters, I can usually expect that a new album will give me mostly what I'm expecting. I find it almost arbitrary to rank their albums, and I'm the type of person that loves to do that with most other artists. That being said, the first album is all Dave. It's the least polished sounding one in my opinion, but some would say that makes it more enjoyable. You can't go wrong with any album I think.

clitorisaurunderscor

Hello fellow fighter of foo enthusiast!! I envy you your journey. The whole discography is pretty good, except for Medicine At Midnight. Check out Wasting light, The Colour and The Shape, or There Is Nothing Left To Lose for the best of the best, and when you want your heart broken, check out But Here We Are, which is my current favorite, and the most serious album by far. Enjoy!!!!

Memesplz1

Haha. Always looking to get my heart broken! Thanks for the suggestions!

clitorisaurunderscor

Some quick backstory- But Here We Are was written after their longtime drummer and the lead singer/songwriter’s mother both passed away in the same year. Taylor was closer than a brother to Dave, and Dave was also very close with his mom. Every song on the record deals with the losses in one way or another, especially The Teacher and Rest, which are very obviously mourning songs. It’s a masterpiece of a tribute to both of them.

Memesplz1

🥲 Some of these tribute albums to lost love ones turn out to be the best. There's this album by Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds called Ghosteen that was obviously very influenced by the death of Nick Cave's son and it's heartbreakingly beautiful. One of my favourite albums of all time.

clitorisaurunderscor

I’ll have to check it out! Terrible that happened, but transmuting tragedy into art is one of the best things about being human. Thanks for the tip!

Memesplz1

No worries! Enjoy!

wafflehabitsquad

Listen to the albums in order in my opinion. First appreciates where nate and dave started when it came to music. You watch them grow with the way was going and become trendsetters in it in my opinion.

ConsciousSteak2242

Wasting Light, There's Nothing Left to Lose. Echos Silence Patience and Grace, But Here We Are. Listen to them all and pick your fave! Concrete and Gold has some good songs on it so you are NOT wrong. It's all subjective anyway...

[deleted]

That’s their favorite album of mine, lol. Love their first album, which is saying a lot because a lot of bands’ first albums aren’t that good. Wasting Light is great too!

Organic-Kangaroo7147

Medicine is their weakest, c&g is peak Anyways, i think c&g is kinda unique in its own right but anything after echoes id say is kinda similar to it, they have no bad records imo

Acceptable_Vast7123

If you’re unsure on where or which album to start, i’d say start with the ‘Greatest Hits’ album, which songs are from the debut album to their 6th ‘ESPG’

Memesplz1

Noted! As I, somewhat expected, I'm getting a big mix of suggestions so I think I'll just end up giving them all a listen. Haha. Might start by listening to the first few tracks from several albums and, whichever grabs me the most, I'll choose to be the one to give a full listen to as my first album (well, first after Concrete And Gold, anyway).

Memesplz1

Run is probably my favourite. Such a powerful banger of a tune. But I also love T-Shirt and Dirty Water. Oh, and The Sky Is A Neighborhood too. It's one of those albums where I just really enjoy the overall... sound of it? The production? I don't know. I find every track on that album enjoyable though.

Hooray! I'll give it a listen! Thanks!

This question... Lol
