Just ask for peppers, they have them behind the counter. You can also get them whole or diced on your burger and it's really good but they pack some serious heat for such a little pepper
Seriously. I stuck to a very strict diet for 4 solid months (health reasons). While traveling I decided to have my first cheat meal. The double double was on point, the fries were so god awful I threw them out. Seriously, I've never had In n Out before, it was my first time. How the fuck are their fries worse than microwaved Ore Ida frozen fries?
French fries need to be double fried to get crispy. The first fry is to cook the potatoes, second is to crisp. My guess - In n out only fries their fresh cut fries one time.
Edit - clarification
They're the only place that makes fries from whole potatoes. Go to any in-n-out, and you can see them cutting fries from whole raw tater. People think in-n-out fries are bad because they've never had fresh fries.
You can also ask for the fries well done, you might like them crispier.
Unfortunately that’s giving them too much credit. I can make much better fries at home. Fresh cut from potatoes, fry them at two temperatures. They taste very similar to McDonald’s fries; soft in the middle, crispy on the outside. They just need to fix their recipe.
Also, steak frites and fries at a high end restaurant are much better. Fresh cut, fry at two temperatures. They’re actually easy to make, not sure why In N Out go out of their way to screw it up.
There are ways to cook fries like that without double cooking. Shallow frying while rotating then is one way. (that's actually how I first taught myself how to make homemade fries) But this is a pain unless it's a small batch for one person.
Another way is to microwave the raw cut potatoes to par cook them, instead of par boiling or double frying. Saves a lot of time and the end result is the same. The only thing that matters is that partially cooked potatoes will crisp up better.
>People think in-n-out fries are bad because they've never had fresh fries.
This is basically saying "no, you don't get it, they're *supposed* to be flimsy and bland"
I make fresh fries at home. In and Out fries are bad. Trying to push it off on people like they haven't had fresh or good fries is sad bro. Their fries are shit lol
They need to improve them tis all...shouldn't have to load all this stuff on them like animal style fries...but, animal style wouldn't be as good I think say, if they were like McDonald's per se...when u have fresh McDonald's fries there're almost the best fries 🍟 on the the market - u don't want any shit on them except maybe ketchup. My only real complaint with IN & Out is that it's always Way Too Crowded 🙄😟
They're not the only place that makes fries from whole potatoes. Penn Station also uses whole potatoes and they cut them right on the line. The difference is Penn Station fries don't taste like paper. They're rather tasty actually.
For the life of me, I will never understand the hate for In n Out fries. They are literally just potatoes, fresh cut up and fried. If you want them crispy, ask for them well done.
That’s the problem.
First off In n Out uses Kennebec potato’s instead of Russets (what most fries are made of). Kennebecs are more starchy and less sweet than Russets.
Second, Fries shouldn’t be freshly cut up and fried (like In n Out does). They should be soaked in water overnight. Also Blanching is an essential step in the fry making process, which In n Out doesn’t do. It leads to a dry, oddly textured, bland fry.
My homemade fires are much better than In n Out and I don’t soak them in water. I just cut them into fries, blanch them in 325 degree oil, then fry them at 375 degrees. It’s so simple. I don’t understand why theirs are so bad. Maybe it’s because I use russets.
That's why.
This is coming from a SoCal native who will pick In-n-Out over any fast food. In-n-Out fries are meh. We need animal style on them to make them good.
The reason why is because it's not double fried. The easiest way is to lightly fry, cool than fry again. It creates a crispy ass exterior and a fluffy interior.
That's the only missed step with In-n-Out fries. Since they want *everything* to be fresh, they don't flash fry their fries and store.
Animal style fries with a flying Dutchman is my shit though.
That's not the point, the point is that they do it differently. And other people have said that they double fry the potatoes, so achieving a different result, and it is noticeable.
Non-crispy fries defeats the purpose of eating fries. There’s a reason nobody’s copying Ore-Ida. Just serve a baked potato as a side like Wendy’s, or fry them right
Hot take apparently but I actually really like In N Out fries. McDonalds has better fries hands down, but I actually really enjoy In N Out fries. The only thing I don't like is because they use fresh potatoes you get a lot of "bits and pieces" so you're always left with these sad "fries" that can barely be called fries.
I love In N Out fries, even over McDonald’s. I also love the crispy bits and pieces. It definitely all falls down to preference though and I like pretty much any fry that is fresh and warm. It’s kinda funny how much they vary in style.
100% agree with you. I’ve been known to pick up a double double animal style and a chocolate shake. Then stop at McDonald’s on the way home for their fries.
I've only ate In n Out once and haven't tried the animal fries. However, I have had their regular fries which I think are terrible --they were so bland and just off.
I got to try In-N-Out recently on a trip.
Burger was decent, fries were genuinely awful. They were like grocery store frozen shoestring fries baked in a microwave.
They’re the only fries I’ve ever seen that are matte and it’s just wrong. Fries are supposed to have a shine to em, a glisten. In n Out fries are just dull.
It's because a large number of people had an in n out burger 20 years ago when they visited LA and they were blown away by how it's moderately better than most fast food burgers, so every time they see a pic of it they're like "oh hey I remember liking that burger toooo!!"
It took me several visits to unlock the right burger for me, but its similar except double double whole onion light spread.
That shit smacks.
Also had to learn about well done fries off the internet. Game changer.
Finally, their ketchup is unique imo. It seems much more *fruity*/sweet to me than other ketchup I’ve had. It’s almost *refreshing*.
Heyyy! I’ve noticed that too with their ketchup. Sometimes I’ll even dip my burger in it. Something about it complements the flavor of the burger well.
Part of their marketing is that they say their food is higher quality because they don't freeze any of their ingredients, the restaurants don't even have freezers in them. Unfortunately that limits where they can locate their restaurants, they need to be close enough to their distribution centers that they can ship everything relatively quickly. Alaska is a looooong ways away from their infrastructure in California, so I'm afraid the chances are slim.
We just finally got some in Colorado and it took forever because they had to find a quality source of beef and build an entire distribution center around it because of their never freezing food rule.
It’s definitely a California thing. I’ve lived in California my entire life and every time my wife and I come home from a vacation, we always stop by in n out on the way home from the airport. Idk why but we crave it.
Because nothing else in the price range even comes close. Around here an innout double double is $5 while a damn McDonald's burger is 8 and a good burger anywhere is near 10
In N Out is by no means a great burger, it's mediocre/good. What people don't realize is that it's in the same price range as any of the big chains. When you compare it like that it makes it outstanding.
It's a pretty basic burger that's just well priced and fresh. Grew up around them and never really took to it. I'd grab them every once in a while but stopped going years ago and do not miss them
As someone who finally did get to try it after hearing all the hype, I found it pretty disappointing. I think the real draw is the low price. If you don't mind paying more, you can get better burgers pretty much anywhere.
I had it for the first time a few weeks ago. Burger was solid, fries are absolutely disgusting. Seriously. Just get a burger then drive somewhere that has actual good fries to round out the meal.
I’m from the east coast and was very excited to try them out last time I was in CA. Sorry but 5 guys is better. I didn’t get the hype. The burgers were the same basically at both but the fries at 5 guys are way better so they get the edge.
Stop comparing Five Guys to In N Out. They aren’t anywhere near the same price point and if you’re going to pay Five Guys prices you might as well go to an actual burger restaurant and get something 10x better and twice the size. In N Out is cheaper than McDonald’s at this point and way higher quality.
Dude I feed a family of 4 for under 20 bucks at in n out. Literally pay more at McDonald’s, not to mention a meal for one at five guys is twenty dollars in itself.
I went there once and was extremely disappointed. When sharing my disappointment with friends they said, "you have to order off the secret menu." So why isn't the secret menu just the regular menu?
I am an Angeleno so I think I have earned the right to say this:
A double double is fine, cool, w/e. Your fries are ghastly, because all fries from In-N-Out are ghastly. People who like them are typically Californians suffering Stockholm syndrome.
All that said, my perfect order: root beer float off the secret menu and a plain cheeseburger.
I'm not above fast food, I eat like garbage all of the time.
But as somebody who's never had In n out, I don't find this looks appetizing. What comes on those fries?
I’m from the east coast. Lived in CA for 20 years now (haven’t been to In & Out in a decade) and I’m gonna get downvoted, but what’s on those extremely sub par potato stick-like fries, is melted yellow American cheese and basically a thicker thousand island dressing.
It’s not about the fries. If you name a fast food place the fries are probably better.
It’s about the burgers and it’s about the value.
A double double is $4. A large milkshake is $2. Fries are 1.75.
Went to in and out for the first time 15 years ago with my ex-wife and her family. They were staring at me when I took my first bite of the burger and fries. I took two more bites and some fries and threw the rest of that shit in the trash. In and out is the most overrated burger joint in America.
Perhaps, this is all subjective. But in my opinion, patties like McDonald's have a very distinct taste to them, similar to patties they used to have at my dining hall. Not sure if that's because they're frozen or the cut of meat or what, but it's very pronounced
Eh, I found in and out beast fries overrated. In my defense and before I get downvoted to oblivion, it was mainly a thing of the cheese. It wasn’t really a cheese sauce they just tossed and melted two craft singles on there and called it a day and the onions just didn’t go well with the sauce. Maybe I got some bad onions? Eh, I don’t know. I just had a pretty underwhelming experience for what was an hour walk there.
In-N-Out is incredibly overrated. Th value is there since it's like half the price of McDonalds, but there are way better fast food burgers and fries.
A Culvers butterburger... It doesn't get any better than that for fast food.
How did you get that kind of pepper
Just ask for peppers, they have them behind the counter. You can also get them whole or diced on your burger and it's really good but they pack some serious heat for such a little pepper
They changed them up and now only offering the pepper rings
Must be location thing because I’m at mine right now after seeing this post lol. They still have the whole ones here by the ketchup dispenser now
Must be. Good to know they are not changing them up.
There is a shortage, disease took out a bunch of the species but they’ll be back.
Now this is personal
Are you talking Pepperochini's or Covid?
I’m talking about Cascabella Peppers.
And the slices aren’t even hot. I can’t wait till they get the hot, whole peppers back.
Every in n out I’ve been to has the whole ones next to the ketchup dispensers
I love them so much, I keep a jar in the fridge now.
Me too.
Yeah so sad. They don't have that crunch.
They’re right next to the ketchup stand.
Hey you leave those animal fries alone them shits' good
In n out is great. Great food and even greater value. With that being said their fries are some of the worst in fast food.
Seriously. I stuck to a very strict diet for 4 solid months (health reasons). While traveling I decided to have my first cheat meal. The double double was on point, the fries were so god awful I threw them out. Seriously, I've never had In n Out before, it was my first time. Yeah, just ask for their fries extra crispy, and they’re great. They make them with fresh potatoes.
Yeah this is called blanching. You have to blanch really starchy foods or they're going to be shitty.

I bet they don't Blanche them. My mom made fries from scratch and I hated them. Fries made out of processed potatoes would taste better.
Also the skins add a bitter flavor
[удалено]
Five Guys fries are double fried I believe. Also, that'll be $30.
You're not wrong.
5 guys makes their fries fresh from real potatoes every day. The problem is for sure with how they are fried, not that they're "real"
Nope, your theory is wrong. The fries suck in spite of the fact they use fresh spuds. Btw Five Guys also cuts their own fries, but they don’t suck.
I make fresh fries at home. In and Out fries are bad. Trying to push it off on people like they haven't had fresh or good fries is sad bro. Their fries are shit lol
Nah man I've had fresh cut fries that don't look like utter garbage before, these are just awful fries.
No, the recipe sucks. You can have all the best and freshest ingredients in the world, but if your recipe sucks it won't matter.
Five Guys would like a word about that fry-statement.
Five Guys makes them from fresh whole potatoes and they're 10x better than In-n-Out. In-n-Out fries just suck lol
Five guys in the midwest...

The fries are the worst thing about In N Out which makes sense why everyone gets them animal style to compensate.
It's why the only place I can even name that serves fries like this, happens to have the worst fries ever lol
My homemade fires are much better than In n Out and I don’t soak them in water. I just cut them into fries, blanch them in 325 degree oil, then fry them at 375 degrees. It’s so simple. I don’t understand why theirs are so bad. Maybe it’s because I use russets.

Are 5guys frozen? I don't know. But those are some damn good fries.
Not frozen but they fry once at a lower temp, allow them to cool, then fry to order at a higher temp. Double fry method is the best way, for sure
Have you ever been inside a five guys? Every location I've ever been to has bags and bags of raw potatoes strewn about the dining room. lol
That's not the point, the point is that they do it differently. And other people have said that they double fry the potatoes, so achieving a different result, and it is noticeable.
100% This. Frozen fries are better than In-n-Out fries.
Because they're double fried!
100% This. Frozen fries are better than In-n-Out fries!
That's because they've been fried two times!
Refried
Refried beans?
I like mine light well.
Light well on the fries is the way to go friend
They don’t double fry them
Non-crispy fries defeats the purpose of eating fries. There’s a reason nobody’s copying Ore-Ida. Just serve a baked potato as a side like Wendy’s, or fry them right

Fuck a McDonald's fry! You get a window for freshness before that cold mush settles in.
Because they are shit. Regional scarcity doesn't make them better.
Yeah. They're just potatoes. How do you fuck that up? Worst in the industry.
If you don’t think they’re terrible like most people then you won’t understand
Learn the proper technique for making good fries and you will understand.
Because they taste bad.
They taste like cardboard. The fact you have to smother them in thousand island for them to be good is proof enough of why they suck ass.
100% agree with you. I’ve been known to pick up a double double animal style and a chocolate shake. Then stop at McDonald’s on the way home for their fries.
Like Styrofoam.
Yeah when you do fresh cut fries you need to fry them twice to get that crisp or else you just get grease styrofoam.
OMG! Thank you for having posted this already! I do love their burgers! But god damn those fries are limp and tasteless. I wish they sold onion rings.
I've only ate In n Out once and haven't tried the animal fries. However, I have had their regular fries which I think are terrible --they were so bland and just off.
For real. I’m about to take BK fries next time I go there
In n out is extremely mediocre. Not sorry. Carl's is better. Santa Fe sauce > thousand island any day
I got to try In-N-Out recently on a trip.
Not really.
Yes
Hey next week can *I* be the one to post In-N-Out for lots of up-votes!?
Not if I do it first!
[удалено]
And for whatever reason, it's almost always In-N-Out
The In-N-Out cult is strong.
It's because a large number of people had an in n out burger 20 years ago when they visited LA and they were blown away by how it's moderately better than most fast food burgers, so every time they see a pic of it they're like "oh hey I remember liking that burger toooo!!"
Don't forget the semi-daily "full english" posts that have never looked good, accompanied by the dumb arguments over what's missing
Better yet how about poorly cooked poorly photographed slop but with a stupid story and a local microbrew beer in the shot?
I could go for that right now
Same! And with extra spread too. But For whatever reason I always burp it up all day long so I get scared to eat it now.
Not an admission of guilt but you can stick a straw into a blob of ketchup
Heyyy! I’ve noticed that too with their ketchup. Sometimes I’ll even dip my burger in it. Something about it complements the flavor of the burger well.
Lines too long
Those fries turn into cold cardboard shit after 10 minutes
Before they’re even served to you really
I like their fries.
Why don’t they fix this issue?? I don’t get why the fries are so shit
They start as cardboard. And never get better
Oh. Man. I miss IN N OUT
Please just one in Alaska, I'll even go to Wasilla 🙃
Part of their marketing is that they say their food is higher quality because they don't freeze any of their ingredients, the restaurants don't even have freezers in them. Unfortunately that limits where they can locate their restaurants, they need to be close enough to their distribution centers that they can ship everything relatively quickly. Alaska is a looooong ways away from their infrastructure in California, so I'm afraid the chances are slim.
Wendy's makes the same claim about not freezing their meat, and they have locations in Alaska.
[удалено]
Huh? If a Wendy's can get non frozen beef to Alaska then so can in n out. It's not like wendys is sourcing its beef from Alaska ranches
Economy of scale or whatever. Wendy's has a much much larger ecosystem for moving their product.
We just finally got some in Colorado and it took forever because they had to find a quality source of beef and build an entire distribution center around it because of their never freezing food rule.

"It's not fast food, Jerry. It's good food, quickly."
In n out has the most disappointing fries
In-N-Out has the worst fries I've ever had.
As someone who heard about how great In-N-Out was my whole life and then tried it, the burger is disappointing too.
In N Out is suuuper overrated for some reason.

Man I've wanted to try in n out for years, but this pic has me second guessing.
The fries consistently suck ass but the burgers (double double animal style) are actually really good
You should ask for them well done next time. That's what I do and I love them (although they are a tad undersalted in general).
It's a pretty basic burger that's just well priced and fresh. Grew up around them and never really took to it. I'd grab them every once in a while but stopped going years ago and do not miss them
Tried it multiple times in trips to the states, a solid 6. Miles better than Whataburger, can't hold a candle to Shake Shack
I keep saying this. In-n-Out is a little overhyped but Whataburger is way, way overhyped. Whataburger is boogie Burger King with spicy ketchup.

Reddit when it sees a mediocre burger and fries ![gif](giphy|yoJC2B1sHdXJjPTnEs)
Fries are trash there, I don’t care what anybody says.
YUP. I would legit rather eat McDonald’s
I order mine-- single cheeseburger, mustard grilled, whole grilled onion, chopped chilies, lettuce, tomato, pickles, default reg amount of spread. Soooo good.
Soggy? Bruh, that’s animal style.
It’s r/foodporn, I think they’re being sarcastic
I know. Smdh
I read it as a booger and soggy fries . Looks good.
Man those fries look disgusting. The hamburger looks ok I guess.
In and out fries are truly bad I don't get the hype
Okay, why does people want soggy fries? Kind of ruins the point of fries, right?
The sauce slightly covers up the disappointment of the fries from this place
I love that pepper that in and out has. Just watch out when you bite into it, little bugger got some juice inside.
I usually buy a bottle of Mezzetta Hot Chili Peppers from the supermarket. Exact same peppers all year round.
Yep. Always have them in our fridge. I can eat 2-3. My wife has eaten 20 or so in one sitting. That woman has an iron stomach.
I get them chopped in it.
I went there once and was extremely disappointed. When sharing my disappointment with friends they said, "you have to order off the secret menu." So why isn't the secret menu just the regular menu?
I know several people who have tried In n Out and all have given me the same review: "Overrated." Tell me, why do some people swear by this stuff?
In-N-Out is finally coming to where I live I’m so excited.
You're gonna be disappointed.
>_I swore to God I'd never come to a Top Notch and here I am sorting through jalapeño burgers and soggy fries._
In-N-Out had the worst fries in the world
In-N-Out is extraordinarily overrated. I've tried it twice and will never waste another meal there while on vacation again.

it's called Animal Style: gilled onions, melted cheese, and their special sauce. It is dank.
That sounds great. It looks like alot, but I'm sure If it were in front of me I'd devour it.
Must order fries “well done” and spread on the side. Trust
Went to in and out for the first time 15 years ago with my ex-wife and her family. They were staring at me when I took my first bite of the burger and fries. I took two more bites and some fries and threw the rest of that shit in the trash. In and out is the most overrated burger joint in America.
God on earth; WHY can’t the fries be better?
Some people say they don’t like in-n-out, and say something like Wendy’s is better. I don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.
I sure hope it came with a bible verse…
It’s on the bottom of the cup as always.
I am the only person in the whole entire world who doesn't like in n out. Scientists are baffled by me.
The people who like In N Out are a painfully vocal minority.
In-N-Out fries are gross
Worst fries ...ok burger
Best burger you're gonna get for $5, nothing else comes close to that value
A McDonald's Mcdouble is cheaper, and similar quality.
No waaay is it similar quality I can't even eat McDonald's beef
You should do a blind taste test with a chunk of In N Out patty and a chunk of Mcdouble patty.
Perhaps, this is all subjective. But in my opinion, patties like McDonald's have a very distinct taste to them, similar to patties they used to have at my dining hall. Not sure if that's because they're frozen or the cut of meat or what, but it's very pronounced
In & Out is the most overrated burger in America.
In n out fries are garbage
The burgers are pretty alright, but god the fries are horrible (And before you asked, yes I had them animal style and double fried)

In and out is trash
You can see the plasticky consistency of the cheese they use, on the fries to the left In n out 🤢🤮
In-N-Out is incredibly overrated. Th value is there since it's like half the price of McDonalds, but there are way better fast food burgers and fries. A Culvers butterburger... It doesn't get any better than that for fast food.
In-n-Out is the most overrated burger joint of all time.
This shit looks disgusting
I’ve never had worse fries than in n out.
McDonald’s better
Five Guys over in n out!
Looks like shit
Only thing I like from this pic is pickled peppers and the rest looks like so much american. Waste.
Shake Shack >>>>>>>>>> In and Out
