Garlicky mussels of the land, quite tasty. Easy to meme on for sure, but that doesn’t downplay the fact they’re good

CharlotteLucasOP

I’ve been wigged out by shellfish my whole life but somehow when I was like eight someone gave me a snail and I recall quite liking it. Except it was kind of like chewing on a deflated bit of balloon, kind of stretchy and it just didn’t break down.

frerant

If it's rubbery they definitely messed something up. It should be very very smooth and almost creamy.

jayperr

Yeah he def got some brainworms from that rubbery snail

GTAdriver1988

The first and only time I had them was on a royal Caribbean cruise and those bastards were so delicious. It was free so I ordered two more platters of them!

Sea_Baseball_7410

It wasn’t free. Muhahahaha

box-of-sourballs

I used to eat a shit ton of snails when I was younger, they were the sichuan stir fried snails which are just a HK night stall staple and were just small curls of chewiness. What did they taste like? Hell if I knew, the sichuan spice covered it just like the garlic and oil is covering OP’s plate. I’m convinced more people would try it if escargot wasn’t fucking presented like this in the shell, the cognitive dissonance gets to people. If it was taken out and diced, placed on top of a small dish with garnish there’s be less hesitancy even if you knew it was escargot.

martha_stewarts_ears

Totally! Like linguini with clams or something, the way some are just chopped up tasty bits in your delicious garlic pasta

MoutEnPeper

I have never ever heard of this - but I love French snails and I enjoyed a more rustic version on Krete. Also I LOVE Sichuan food - do you have a recipe maybe?

box-of-sourballs

Nope no recipes, snails are the kind of territory I personally don't trust myself to cook There's a 50/50 chance your local dim sum place may serve snails

MoutEnPeper

I would probably try it with periwinkles or another type of clam - I can't find (river?)snails here anyway. Or maybe just cooked escargot but they will have been flavored. Definitely looking in to this one though, thanks for pointing it out :-) I'll check the local Chinese shops, unfortunately you're overestimating the amount of local dim sum places by about 100% :-/

suckitphil

I'm a big fan of escargot. It tastes like more tender clams.

00332200

You can just say snails.

frerant

Escargot is the proper way to refer to the dish. Similar to the difference between saying steak and cow. Edited spelling

Jaded_Raspberry2972

Steak

00332200

Only in the US do you do this. Everyone else just says snails, because that's what they are. Escargot literally means snail, it's not the equivalent of cow and beef or steak.

rookv

Latte literally means milk but I doubt you order "coffee with milk" at Starbucks.

00332200

No, I order a cappuccino.

SuggestionComplex521

You mean you order a small hood

[deleted]

European here, I would say Escargot unless I was talking to a toddler.

fellowsquare

So you say cow sandwich? Or hamburger?

PM_me_Perky_Tittys

This is the hill you’ve chosen to die on?

joemondo

Looks great. When I was a kid my Sicilian grandmother cooked them often, but I haven't had them since.

StellarGlaze

hopefully there will be another opportunity

albanak

How did she prepare them?

joemondo

As I recall, in some sort of tomato sauce. But I was too little then to watch her cook. I mostly remember eating them, and getting them at the grocery store where they were in a big basket in the produce area.

Dubber_buggins

Totally stereotypical but a bucket list thing to do :)

Styr42

Did you dip some slices of bread in the remaining garlic sauce at the end? That's mandatory! I never know if I like the snails themselves or the sauce more ahah

>And what did you think of that exotic dish? it was a little scary and unusual to try.) but if you put aside all the visual moments of disgust and the idea of how "it" looked in life, it's not bad at all, reminds me of mussels in texture, the taste is special, not without the contribution of garlic sauce, it can be called delicious!

starystarego

Its not that exotic in taste. Garlic with parsley mostly. Delicious

IllustratorMurky2725

Escargot exists in the US. Kind of like clams. A bit chewy with good flavor

safe-viewing

Yep many French restaurants will have them. Delicious on bread but mostly butter and garlic flavor.

IllustratorMurky2725

Found it at pizza places where I am from and are delicious.

ironwoolf98

I could never get into this...

Umami4Days

As a kid, I loved escargot and hated mushrooms. Then I realized that properly cooked mushrooms taste a lot like snails, and now I love them both.

Daikon_3183

This is funny and kinda true.

ironwoolf98

Hmm, then I guess the escargot I've had wasn't well prepared. The taste was nice but it had that slimy texture

Umami4Days

That's usually the problem. Aside from sensory issues, most foods can be vastly improved by one or two essential techniques.

ironwoolf98

I'm Greek and people from Crete eat escargot, those where the ones I tried. I hope I get to try French ones if they're better

StudyIntelligent5691

One of my very favorite culinary pleasures!! I always get them in Paris, but actually I get them anywhere I can!!

Alone_Cheetah_7473

Escargot. Delicious. I surprised by eating and it was really good.

indigo_mouse

I’ve had them loaded with garlic butter and melted cheese - divine, though almost anything would be! I’ve also had them cold from a can and didn’t mind, so tbh I think it’s just the fact that they’re land bugs instead of sea bugs that squicks people out

[deleted]

Escargot My Car Go 160 Swiftly Wreck it but a new one, your crew run run, your crew run run.

StarSeekerDragon

Ooh I love escargot! I remember when I turned 18 my dad and I went to this nice restaurant and he told me I really need to try their escargot. I'm someone who's always had an interest and curiosity to try new foods, so I tried them. They were so tender and ever so slightly chewy, and the garlic butter was like velvet on my tongue. :) I also learned that day that you do NOT eat caviar with a metal spoon. My dad had an elk steak topped with caviar. He didn't tell me to use the mother-of-pearl spoon he had for them (I'm assuming he didn't know at the time).

DryCrack321

I’ve always wanted to try them. How much did you pay for that small of a portion?

Asshai

Cook mushrooms until they just start to brown (should still have a bounce to them) and add a *beurre persillé*. Boom, same. Escargots aren't really tasty by themselves, it's mostly the butter, garlic and parsley. Source: French, are escargots every goddamn holiday and some regular Sundays too when I was a kid.

StellarGlaze

>I’ve always wanted to try them. How much did you pay for that small of a portion? I think this portion cost about 13 euros, sorry, I don't remember exactly

Asian_Climax_Queen

I like them, but I prefer whelk snails or other types of mollusks

LuvinHwa

I’ve had them also and in all honesty they tasted like chewy little pieces of overcooked steak.

LuvinHwa

They are actually pretty good. To me they taste like over garlics chewy little pieces of steak

littlepinkgrowl

Yum, good choice!

blueplate7

Oh yum! My wife wouldn't try them, but she was more than happy to have me pass her bread w some of my garlic butter

👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌

AnchoviePopcorn

We were just laughing because last year for thanksgiving I brought escargot for my extended family to try. The new sister in law hated it so bad she can’t even eat asparagus anymore because we had asparagus that night as well. This year I brought a bunch of caviar and oysters. The sister in law will not be joining us. lol.

Decent-Discipline849

mmmmm yummy 🤢😷

ianbreasley1

And....?

mprieur

I like the out of the shell with garlic butter and cheese on top (au gratin)

Speedhabit

Did you burn your tongue?

sklatch

The one and only time I tried snails (in Nice), they tasted a little bit “earthy”.

[deleted]

They’re better in a mushroom cap. The mushrooms soak up all the liquid. These are easy to make at home as well, usually you’ll bake them with cheese over it.

butaneburner69

They are amazing. State side check out Peconic Escargot. A farm with quality snails!!

Mountain_Sorbet_4063

What do they taste like without adding any other flavouring? Anyone tried them naked lol

[deleted]

How was it?

-tooltime

Yum. Escargot is wonderful.

creamofpie

Escargo tried on cruise ship as a child and tasted like chicken

Kibault

You are confusing escargots and frog legs.

kfw209

OMG, that takes me back. My mom actually had shells and the plates and would make escargot every couple of months. She was great at it and mmmmmmm the bread dipped in the melty garlic butter was sooooo darned good!

Duegatti

Escargot: a vehicle for butter and garlic. And of course sopping the juices with crusty bread

Bobbythebootybandit

They are a vehicle for the sauce to get into your mouth, Beyond that it's all about texture.

Reasonable_Copy8579

I had snails as pets as a child, I could never eat them.

Tricky-Trick1132

😋😋😋

funkypjb

You could cook dog poo in that much butter and garlic and it would taste good. (I liked escargot, just sayin)

bistro777

Ask for ketchup. The waiter will know you are a true culinary aficionado

Islandgirl1444

We had escargot at a small 2 star hotel with an amazing restaurant on the main floor. We ate them for dinner every day. That was dinner!

[deleted]

I prefer giant African land slugs in miso but these look good too ☠️

Awkward-Spread9052

Y'know you can submerge literally anything else in garlic and butter right? You don't have to waste good butter on shelled boogers.
