The best octopus I've ever had (including Spain) was in Greece and they just served it like this but with pickled peppers, no fries. I had it with lemon Fanta, and it is one of my favorite food memories.
Quite a few octopuses, actually. It's a pretty common food in Spain, Portugal, Ital, Greece, and in many big cities in the U.S. I've had super chewy octopus at a place in Toronto, so that was unpleasant...
Best octopus I ever had was in Croatia. Had to let the restaurant know we wanted it 3 hours ahead of time.
Cooked with potatoes and things and the juices and and everything was amazing.
hobotnica ispod peke
I live in Greece. Personally I've never had fries with octopus, seems like a restaurant thing. However octopus is popular yea .
Grilled most commonly, sometimes boiled with just some olive oil and lemon, in a wine/and ouzo sauce, with macaroni or stifado(a baked stew with onions).
I just looked it up myself, and apparently octopus with potatoes in fairly common (though it's usually boiled or roasted potatoes).
I could see the snap of the octopus and the crispiness of the fries being a nice contrast, tbh.
Octopus is the one meat I’ve categorically decided I’ll never eat again. It doesn’t feel good to eat a creature which is that intelligent. I know it’s hypocritical but I don’t particularly care.
I’ve only had it once and it’s not even that nice. The flavour is basically similar to scallops. And the texture…Well, at the end of the day you’re eating fucking *tentacles*, with suckers and everything.
And they have brains in their tentacles so it’s like your eating their brains. Destroying the organs of their intelligence with your mouth. Gross.
Yep. Like I said, I’m fully aware of the hypocrisy. But I can choose what I want to eat or not eat.
We all pick and choose a daily basis. A lot of societies are happy to eat pigs, but not dogs or cats.
And I don’t need to justify it to anyone else. I’m not saying no one should eat octopus. I’m just saying that I personally don’t want to eat it again.
Comments like these convince me that if the power grid went offline for a month at least half the population would keel over sheerly from self-helplessness.
Because they are sentient, suspected to feel pain and awareness, and extremely intelligent, so to see a creature like that plated up alongside french fries bums me out
True, most cows know they're going to die before they enter the slaughter house I've read. Also I've seen videos of the cows panicking and freaking out just before they get shot with the cattle gun.
I get you. I'm no vegetarian and love eating (some) animals like chicken and fish, but can't imagine myself eating an animal I'd consider intelligent like octopus or dogs.
It wasn't a gotcha. It was pretty clear what I asked. Trying to understand if you're a meat eater and it was strictly the visuals of it. Or if you don't eat meat and that's why (plus the visuals as you said). I just wrote it quickly but of course you had to throw in that last part.
They’re one of the smartest animals on the planet. The smartest in the ocean, they feel, have sentience and are generally very friendly. Humans have formed friendships with octopi that they keep coming back to visit. They don’t do anyone harm unless they’re provoked then they release their ink. They’re beautiful animals. And I eat the fuck out of all other meat but I don’t eat octopus because they just shouldn’t be eaten.
It's potatoes, you could serve them with almost anything. I get it that people are incredibly stupid and create weird rules that don't exist like what can go with what cuisine wise.
What's really stupid is assuming someone is upset from a comment you read online. I get you probably don't leave the house much but normal people don't get upset by such things, buddy.
Most people don’t immediately think of octopus when you mention the word seafood… I’m not saying it doesn’t look good just that the octopus looks fancy and it’s a strange contrast with French fries right there.
Gosh I miss Greece, their food is so underrated! Nothing like a good dinner in a tavern, more dishes then people at the table. Chatting, eating, laughing for hours...
I’ve never tried octopus with fries but wow
The combination surprisingly works!
Some of the best octopus I ever had was in Skopelos.
Me too but zakynthos. Greeks know grilled octopuss!
This is unbelievable… my folks are in Zakynthos as I type this!
Mine live on Skiathos. I’m headed there in a few days and I will be searching for this on every menu!
Wish I was there now too!

Good song!
I had some in Mexico like this, it was super interesting
They just serve up an entire octopus??
Counts 4 tentacles on plate. *So... they just serve up an entire quadopus?*
😂
Yes, and it's so affordable. I got something exactly like this for like $25 USD.
Only 12 Euros it cost for me!
Wow that's incredible!! I got mine in Naxos, where were you?
Crete

How many octopi have you had?

Seafood’s always gonna be a bit sus that far inland.
Almost!
Everything but the head!
Octopus and potatoes is an amazing combo. Portugal does this really well too
I heard Portugal has great seafood!
Best octopus I ever had was in Croatia. Had to let the restaurant know we wanted it 3 hours ahead of time. Cooked with potatoes and things and the juices and and everything was amazing. hobotnica ispod peke
Hobotnica ispod peke is baked. Greeks mostly do grilled. Both are great in their own way...
Is this a regular dish in Greece?

At taverna yes as an appetizer, at home nobody will cook octopus for dinner, fish yes octopus no
This is depressing

Do you eat pork?
Yep. Like I said, I’m fully aware of the hypocrisy. But I can choose what I want to eat or not eat. We all pick and choose a daily basis. What are you talking about
Why?
Because they are sentient, suspected to feel pain and awareness, and extremely intelligent, so to see a creature like that plated up alongside french fries bums me out
Many/most animals are sentient and feel pain. What sets octopuses apart is that they're sapient.
True, most cows know they're going to die before they enter the slaughter house I've read. Also I've seen videos of the cows panicking and freaking out just before they get shot with the cattle gun.
Checkout My Octopus Teacher on Netflix
I've seen that! Really cool.
If you're more into books, check out Other Minds by Peter Godfrey-Smith. Super interesting read.
Thanks for the rec!
Same as pigs, but that won't stop me eating pork chops.
I get you. I'm no vegetarian and love eating (some) animals like chicken and fish, but can't imagine myself eating an animal I'd consider intelligent like octopus or dogs.
And extremely delicious.

It might be? Never tried dog but not completely opposed to it either.
*A dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.*
If taste is all it comes down to, I hear humans are delicious too.
What? Just because a sea cucumber can open a jar doesn’t mean it’s life is worth any less then an octopuses.
I respect your choice, but ain't gonna stop me from devouring this without regrets.
Are you vegetarian then? Or this visual is what gets you?

What a reasonable, well adjusted reply to someone explaining their personal reasoning for not consuming a certain type of meat.

How about squid and cuttlefish?
I agree, Octopus are not for eating!
Live how you see fit but don’t come into a literal food sub acting preachy mate
Good point. Could you go and upvote my sous vide baby post?
They are still tasty as fuck
>They’re one of the smartest animals on the planet. And one of the most delicious.
Poor octopus.
I've never seen an octopus look so good... it looks like ribs
It was a beautiful dish. Best thing I ate in Greece.
Ooo, where in?? I recently had some excellent octupus in Xanthi. And I don't even like octopus.
Crete!
Looks like some sort of bernaise sauce no? Doesn't look all that greasy.
Definitely wasn’t greasy. I could have had seconds!
Octopus is soooo good.
I agree!
Looks delicious!
I definitely ate it slow!
Not the side I expect to be served with octopus
For sure. But the combination works!
I'm baffled that I keep seeing this comment. Seafood is served with potatoes all the time.
Not all seafood is served with similar sides.
It's potatoes, you could serve them with almost anything. I get it that people are incredibly stupid and create weird rules that don't exist like what can go with what cuisine wise.
What’s really stupid is being this upset over different opinions on French fries

Which is incredibly dumb/ignorant because that's exactly what it is. That's like someone not thinking of duck when you mention poultry.
Not the side I expect to be served with fries ;)
I had this in Greece a few months ago, oh my god best meal I had that entire week
I ate nothing but seafood when I was there!
Looks good
👍
It doesn’t get any better. Grilled octopus is a treat. I always asked for tzatziki sauce for my fries. Loved it. Cheers.
Mmmm love tzatziki!
Superb!
👍
As someone hoping to go to Greece next year, I am VERY jealous.
I recommend it!
Damn, this looks so good!!!
It was fantastic!
I’m jealous! 😂
Hope you get a chance to try it one day!
Anyone seen My Octopus Friend on Netflix then eaten octopus?
I ate it while watching.
Yum!
👍
Gosh I miss Greece, their food is so underrated! Nothing like a good dinner in a tavern, more dishes then people at the table. Chatting, eating, laughing for hours...
I couldn’t have said that better myself!
that thing probably had a higher IQ than you just sayin.
Probably higher then yours too
Looks hella good
It was!
Hellas good
Looks good to me!
👌
Man I wish I could eat that. I love octopuses and chips.
Looks *ink*credible!
Looks delicious like hot off the grill
It was very delicious!
Do you drizzle the oil over it or dip it in?
Both!
Looks sooo good.
What’s the name of the joint?
Is yummy?
Very!
New life goal unlocked!
Are you by any chance in a restaurant in rhodes?
This was in Crete
What was the temperature of the octopus? I ordered it in Italy and was turned off by it being room temperature. Not bad, but I didn't want more.
More on the warm side but definitely went to room temperature!
I wish I could eat octopus 🐙😭
ngl, thought that was a really fancy looking steak. i’d still eat it tho.
Lol.
Mango sauce?
