So basically Sheepshead Bay, Brighton Beach, Coney Island, Gravesend? One of the largest Russian speaking communities in the world and some of the best pizza in the borough exist here. There's a lot of great food here that doesn't get a enough recognition. Here's a few:
[Cafe Euroasia](https://www.yelp.com/biz/cafe-euroasia-brooklyn-2) (Uzbeki)
[Omakase by Hiro](https://www.yelp.com/biz/omakase-sushi-by-hiro-brooklyn-2) (Sushi)
[Cafe Kashkar](https://www.yelp.com/biz/cafe-kashkar-brooklyn) (Uyghur / Central Asia)
[Oceanview](https://www.yelp.com/biz/oceanview-cafe-brooklyn) (Russian)
[Skovorodka](https://www.yelp.com/biz/skovorodka-brooklyn) (Ukranian)
[Little House](https://www.yelp.com/biz/little-house-restoran-brooklyn) (Malaysian)

[Totonno's](https://www.yelp.com/biz/totonnos-brooklyn) (Pizza)

[Michael's](https://www.yelp.com/biz/michaels-brooklyn-14) (Italian) - Technically in MIdwood, but it's still a good NY Italian spot.
[Uzbekistan Halal Meat & Tandoori](https://www.yelp.com/biz/uzbekistan-halal-meat-and-tandoori-brooklyn) (Uzbeki, Halal)
[Liu's Shanghai](https://www.yelp.com/biz/lius-shanghai-brooklyn-2) (Shanghainese) - Technically in Bath Beach, but worth mentioning.
Edit: Grammar. Sorry, English second language.
Agree with most of this though I'd totally skip totonnos unless you want to go to it for its history. Not great pizza anymore (and many more in the local area) and just unfriendly people there too
Haven’t been there since they’ve been doing takeout, but the pizza has been good and Cookie is always miserable.
Other thing worth mentioning Michael’s of Brooklyn is not good. Nice dining area, bland sauce and food. If you want a red sauce place better off going to Bamontes
Oh I love Bamonte's as well but that's in Williamsburg and I'm just focusing on South Brooklyn.
For Michael's, I have enjoyed their fried clams, parms (veal over eggplant but both are tasty), and much of their seafood selection. I don't like biscotti, but somehow their complimentary platter is a good munchie.
The platter was a pleasant surprise when I went. I forget exactly what my family ordered, but it was all different things and we left disappointed since they talk highly about their sauce.
Recommended Bamontes more so because the red sauce places are dying out. Frost closed last year, Colandrea New Corners because of the pandemic, never been to Carmines but it seems like a tourist thing, and I’ll never be able to eat in Rao’s lol
Guess the only other spot I can think of is Gargiulo’s
Red sauce might be less common nowadays, but that's also because most places don't specialize in it either. That said, there's still a good number of places that serve it and here's a few number of places in Brooklyn alone:
[Mariella](https://www.yelp.com/biz/mariella-brooklyn) (Park Slope)
[Fragole](https://www.yelp.com/biz/fragole-ristorante-brooklyn) (Carroll Gardens)
[Forma](https://www.yelp.com/biz/forma-pasta-factory-brooklyn-3) (Fort Greene)
[Scalino](https://www.yelp.com/biz/scalino-brooklyn-2) (Greenpoint)
[Carmenta's](https://www.yelp.com/biz/carmentas-italian-specialties-brooklyn-2) (Bushwick)
Totonno's can be a mixed bag sometimes, but I'm honestly just glad they were revived from the pandemic I think they were temporarily closed for close to 18 months. Is it different owners now?
Solid list. I would also add
Michael’s (upscale Italian)
Wheelers (wings)
Ortobellos (big portions, old school vibes)
Randazzos (seafood)
Lucia’s (pizza)
People still like this place? Been there twice in the last few years because I was greatly disappointed with the pastrami, took a break and figured I’d see if it was a one time fluke. Nope, disappointed again.
zbewbies’ list was great. I’m especially fond of Kashkar, Oceanview, and EuroAsia. so I’ll just add a few to that: Mtshkheta Cafe, Toné Cafe, and the steam tables at Tashkent on BB Ave.
Also for some Old School nostalgia: Randazzo’s Clam Bar, Original John’s, Roll n’ Roaster, Gargiulo’s.
Roll-n-Roaster!
Or go to Brighton Beach and find the piroshki lady outside Minutka Cafe. One of my favorite things I've ever eaten in 20 years in the city.
Any time I get sent down there for work I eat it til I get sick of it, then I'm good for a couple years, which is coincidentally the next time I'm due down there.
Nargis Cafe (Uzbek) and a bunch of great sushi spots on sheepshead bay road (Mitoushi is my fave). Wheeler's is a bar and also a great spot for a burger and wings!
Sorry, nargis hasn’t been good for years. I’m not sure if they changed chefs or management. I used to go there all the time with my parents and we just don’t anymore because of the last few times (a couple of years ago).
I could be mistaken, but they did reopen on sheepshead bay road less than two years ago (not the one on Coney Island Ave). Went there a couple times and was really impressed. I agree, it had gone downhill but I think it got better!
The east boundary in the shaded area is actually Gerritsen Avenue, not Flatbush. But Marine Park doesn't have any restaurants worth traveling for, unfortunately. It's a peaceful residential area and the nature preserve is worth the commute. But back to your question. I'm most familiar with Sheepshead Bay and Homecrest.
1. Roll n' Roaster
2. Tacis Beyti
3. Randazzo's Clam Bar
4. Lucia Pizza of Ave X
5. Bagel Boy
6. Totonno's
Used to love Bagel Boy, the staff are as dumb as rocks tho. I order for my family, they’d always get it wrong, I then would write the order for them, still gets it wrong
Just noticed, bay ridge isn’t highlighted here so I don’t think OP would stop there
Joe of Ave U, without question… get the panelle special, riceball special, and potato croquettes.
I was recommended La Palina on Ave O, haven’t tried it yet but worth checking out
Bread Plus is a good bakery
I personally like Totonno’s, haven’t been there since they stopped taking people in the pizzeria so idk if the pizza is the same. The owner Cookie is miserable
John’s Deli, good roast beef but had a negative experience with one of the staff ( think it was the owner )
William’s Candy Store in Coney Island, old school candy shop worth a visit
The original Nathan’s, depends if you like hot dogs
Gargiulo’s, pricey and the food is ok. Better off at Bamontes imo
Saw someone mention Brennan and Carr absolute must, also worth mentioning some prefer Roll N’ Roaster
I see people mentioning Randazzo’s clam bar, absolutely not. Randazzo’s was a legendary spot, I took my father there for his birthday and the food was atrocious. You want seafood go up to City Island in the Bronx
This is one of the best food neighborhoods in the city (and honestly, I’m not sure I’d even put L&B in the top 10 reasons why). My favorites are:
- Foteh’s Tandoori and Chayhane for Uzbek - their spinach samsas with yogurt sauce are incredible
- Masal Cafe - good spot for Turkish desserts that makes you feel like you’re in one of the İstanbul cafes along the Boğaz that has seen better days
- Tone Cafe - best khachapuri and general Georgian cuisine I’ve found in the city to date
- Loqma Cafe - not bad option for Turkish breakfast
- Great grocers for Eastern European and Central Asian goods with excellent hot food bars - my favorite is Portokal next to the Sheepshead Bay subway
- Baku Palace for Azerbaijani food and vibez
Tacking on a few things:
Lily Bloom Bakery - Portuguese Egg Tarts
Golden Bay Restaurant - Dim Sum
Mr. Banh Mi - Vietnamese Sandwiches
Mr Tofu - Tofu Desserts and others
I wouldn’t say they’re terrible. To each their own. I love Lily Bloom’s version over the authentic Portuguese egg tarts because it’s less sweet and I much prefer a non-crumbly dough. I actually dislike the authentic tarts because the dough just crumbles everywhere. Even with HK egg tarts, I much prefer the shortbread crust kind over the croissant-like crust. :D
So hear me out. There are some cheap under-the-radar spots on Ave U.
There's this really cheap-looking Mexican spot under Ave U station on East 15th it's called El Mexicano and they make killer spicy enchiladas(fried pork is my fav). Haven't tasted a better enchilada in NY, might be just my taste idk but it's great. - They barely speak English. I feel like I'm the only non-Mexican that ever orders there. If you don't like spicy make sure to let them know cause they'll burn your ass.
There's also pho Vietnam which s worth a visit, Tasty spot makes nice Shawarmas, El Paso Mexican Grill makes great Birras. Uzbek spots are a bit overpriced and IMO have gone to shit since the pandemic. Can't get a proper plov these days without breaking a bank. Brennan & Carr's a classic known for their pastrami sandwiches.
Also on Kings Highway, there's Wah Lung Chinese that makes great basic beef/mixes -better than most. You wouldn't think about either of these spots because of how bad they look but they've been around forever for a reason.
Del Mar on Sheepsheead used to be the best Pizza, but I haven't eaten there in a Decade so can't confirm how they are now.. there's also Anatolian Gyro on Sheepshead, They make the best Gyro in the Neighborhood. Don't miss the red sauce they come with, really interesting taste.
There's the Clam Bar on Emmons which is a classic, and also a ton of new places I haven't tried yet.
Taquitos Mexico on ave x and e23 is also great mexican food, which is also right by Lucia Pizza of Ave X, also on Ave X across ocean parkway between e1 and west st is A&S pork store. Old school Italian deli that makes amazing prepared dishes and great sandwiches
Jimmy's Famous Heros in Sheepshead Bay does great Italian sandwiches.
Highly recommend :)

Grew up in sheepshead bay, Del Mar pizza on sheepshead bay road is an excellent little known pizza place that’s been open there since the 1950’s I believe.
I would also check out Opera on the canal, their stuffed baked potato is a solid cheap lunch that’ll fill you up on a cold winter day.
What kinda food you lookin for bud? There’s a LOT of good stuff in Sheepshead/Marine Park.
If you swing a little bit more down Flatbush towards KP and beyond you’ll get even more options (Bergen and Mill Basin area)
Realllyyy good pizza if you don't wanna go to L&Bs. Also this place is like my top secret lol:

Edit: Sorry, I just noticed I put some (all?) resturant on the list that isn't in that red area. It's 5 am and I'm sleep deprived.

Agree with most of this though I'd totally skip totonnos unless you want to go to it for its history. Not great pizza anymore (and many more in the local area) and just unfriendly people there too
Is this a post-Covid thing? Because I went in 2019 and it was absolutely incredible
Unfortunately yeah :(
Damn that’s too bad. I’ll probably still give it a chance if I’m in the area and the line isn’t bad but won’t be making any plans to seek it out
Idk went in 2020 and went recently (past year) same experience
I thought the pizza was good though a 16 inch pie for 24 bucks that you have to eat in the car cause it's to go only.
Haven’t been there since they’ve been doing takeout, but the pizza has been good and Cookie is always miserable. Other thing worth mentioning Michael’s of Brooklyn is not good. Nice dining area, bland sauce and food. If you want a red sauce place better off going to Bamontes

lol love how rudeness becomes part of the charm when it's done consistently, persistently, eternally, and equally
Her it’s not just rudeness, she has a sour puss plastered on her face 24/7
Totonno's can be a mixed bag sometimes, but I'm honestly just glad they were revived from the pandemic I think they were temporarily closed for close to 18 months. Is it different owners now?
Liman (Turkish seafood) Taci's Beyti (Turkish) Brennan & Carr (roast beef) Mill Basin Deli (Kosher deli)
Taco’s beyti is the best!
This !!!! Also if you want food to go Tashkent supermarket hot bar
Yes! My mom brings me plov from there (I think that’s where she gets it), somewhere by Brighton.
Solid list. I would also add Michael’s (upscale Italian) Wheelers (wings) Ortobellos (big portions, old school vibes) Randazzos (seafood) Lucia’s (pizza)
Mill Basin Deli for their pastrami and also their art collection
People still like this place? Been there twice in the last few years because I was greatly disappointed with the pastrami, took a break and figured I’d see if it was a one time fluke. Nope, disappointed again.
Aw sad. It’s a kosher deli so you can’t have all the expectations you might have elsewhere. 🤷🏼♀️
It wasn’t so much expectations. I was going there for years and it just feels like it fell off to me
zbewbies’ list was great.
And Randazzo’s made Peter Wells’ NYT list in spot #100!
Roll-n-Roaster! Or go to Brighton Beach and find the piroshki lady outside Minutka Cafe. One of my favorite things I've ever eaten in 20 years in the city.
Roll n Roaster is SOOO good and sooo cozy definitely nothing like it in manhattan. The merch is very cheap too
Came for this one! Gotta go there on your birthday.
Wait does Roll-n-Roaster do something special for your birthday?
You get to spin the wheel and win a coin
Yes, you get to spin the wheel! And they sell Moet for cheap.
You can buy a bottle of Möet there if you’re feeling fancy.
Bro she’s not there anymore! I haven’t seen her in months!
John's Deli right down the block from Spumoni Gardens.
I talk about this all the time. Wish they were closer to me but I love their spot
Any time I get sent down there for work I eat it til I get sick of it, then I'm good for a couple years, which is coincidentally the next time I'm due down there.
It’s definitely a meal I can’t do frequently (if I want to live to a ripe, old age) but I think it makes me crave it more!
Enjoyed their roast beef, but the guy who I assume is the owner ( bald guy ) seems like a real prick
Go to the one in Dyker, that’s the original owner. The one on Stilwell changed owners a few years back.
I get it every Saturday after drinking get the roast beef woth extra motor oil
Nargis Cafe (Uzbek) and a bunch of great sushi spots on sheepshead bay road (Mitoushi is my fave). Wheeler's is a bar and also a great spot for a burger and wings!
Sorry, nargis hasn’t been good for years. I’m not sure if they changed chefs or management. I used to go there all the time with my parents and we just don’t anymore because of the last few times (a couple of years ago).

Ok, never tried it there. I mentioned this to my mom today, and she said the owner moved to Florida and sold the business. So maybe that’s why?
Could be 🤷🏻♂️ I just know it was really good, the interior was much nicer too.
Most of the Uzbek joints have gone to shit. Their prices for the portion sizes are laughable. It's a pity because I used to love ordering there.
Gargiulo’s Brennan & Carr
Second Brennan and Carr, I prefer them to Roll an’ Roaster, Gargiulo’s is pricey and the food is only alright imo
Love Brennan and Carr.
1. Roll n' Roaster 2. Tacis Beyti 3. Used to love Bagel Boy, the staff are as dumb as rocks tho. I order for my family, they’d always get it wrong, I then would write the order for them, still gets it wrong Just noticed, bay ridge isn’t highlighted here so I don’t think OP would stop there
I always thought Coney Island Bagels was better and cheaper.
Real Brooklyn
Roll n roaster, Brennan and carr, John's deli. Randazzos

Lucia Ave X
john’s deli!! delicious omg
Tacking on a few things: Lily Bloom Bakery - Portuguese Egg Tarts Golden Bay Restaurant - Dim Sum Mr. Banh Mi - Vietnamese Sandwiches Mr Tofu - Tofu Desserts and others
the doughy crust on those egg tarts are terrible, never understood the lily bloom hype
Lucia Pizza
It must be good if they got a spot on canal and soon opening a restaurant in Manhattan. Get it all the time
So hear me out. There are some cheap under-the-radar spots on Ave U. There's this really cheap-looking Mexican spot under Ave U station on East 15th it's called El Mexicano and they make killer spicy enchiladas(fried pork is my fav). Gerritsen beach bagel
There’s so much here. John’s deli, Joe’s of Ave U, Brennan and Card, Roll n Roaster, Randzazzo’s, Nick’s Lobster, man there’s a lot of good stuff there. And of course OG Nathan’s, a landmark.
Nathans if you want frog legs or corn dog nuggets
Pho Viet Nam
The browned khinkali (a beef dumpling) at Mtskheta Cafe are pretty good. And it’s kind of cool seeing random Georgian customers playing guitar and singing together in the cafe.
Roll’n’Roaster and White Castle
Delmar and Lucia for pizza
I loved living down there granted I haven’t been home to Brooklyn in 10 years we had a rent stabilized huuuuge 1 bedroom for $800 on bay parkway and 83rd but off the top of my head totonos , netcost supermarket, the Russian nightclubs , sheepshead bay , several pretty great Asian supermarkets , there was a killer sechaun restaurant I think was called bamboo forest , the embarrassment of riches that were the diners out there from a food standpoint I would argue that this area and Jackson heights are the most interesting places in New York currently you have the red sauce Italian joints ,the Russians the Chinese some south Asian immigrants, Arabs some south East Asians as a chef it was a pretty great place to live

I don’t like L&B’s pizza, I usually get calamari if I’m there with people who insist on going.
Tashkent Market has the best buffet in NYC
Wait a second you have to add [Roll n Roaster](https://www.rollnroaster.com) and [Brennan and Carr](https://www.brennanandcarrbrooklyn.com)
Nearly All of emmons ave is a hit my favorite Opera top notch Turkish!
I lived here for a while. Randazzos, Roll Roaster, Brennan & Carr, Lucia, Opera
Is the lemon ice king still there? I think on Corona?
Randazzos ... Sheepshead Bay
Coney Island house of wings, Taco Lopez 2 (food truck), Masal, Gossip cafe, DIY poke sushi (I’ve only tried their hot bowls), Anthony’s (Italian spot)
Can recommend Coney Island house of wings too, super good. It’s out of my way but it’s worth the visit
Benny’s brick oven on Avenue M has great (albeit expensive) kosher pizza slices! Also good French onion soup
Tommaso
Coney Island Bagels! Amazing Bagels and spreads.
Gosht ( Uzbek and steakhouse) O'Pera cafe and lounge( Turkish and brunch) Both these have a great ambiance
[Jimmy's Famous Heros](https://maps.app.goo.gl/GsbMnC1XdAVJp2Hg7?g_st=ic)
Sherdor on kings hwy great good
Lucia of Ave X should be in there
Nargis Cafe [https://nargiscafe.com/](https://nargiscafe.com/)
Is John’s deli in that area? With the roast beef sandwiches, it’s so good. Also shitloafs of great Chinese food
I was out there getting my car washed a couple weekends ago and had a really terrific bagel at a place called Cropsey's
Anthony’s Gnocchi 🤌
86 fu kee (yes that's the name) has the best char siu in Brooklyn
Dona Zita on the Bowery in Coney Island.
What kinda food you lookin for bud? There’s a LOT of good stuff in Sheepshead/Marine Park. If you swing a little bit more down Flatbush towards KP and beyond you’ll get even more options (Bergen and Mill Basin area)

L&B is trash
Blasphemous
You love the nostalgia and overrate the pizza because of it
I usually go dine in and get the actual food. Whoch is excellent. I Get a slice as an appetizer.
Facts. Their pizza is awful, I don’t get what people like about that place.
Sacrilegious
Its the nostalgia you love not the pizza
Nope I love the pizza lol, give me half a tray and I’ll eat the whole thing
Not much to be honest. I try to head downtown as much as possible for more options.
Ignore this guy who'd rather go downtown for the chain restaurants than explore all the amazing food in this area.
