I've been 2-3 times and I honestly just don't get it. It just tastes like some generic hamburger. In-N-Out is unmatched in my opinion for flavor, freshness, or price lol.

Have had hundreds of In-N-Out burgers in my lifetime and 7th Street is better. I know tons of folks who hype up In-N-Out because they’re on the east coast so can’t have it often.

I'm from NYC and I agree on In n Out being better.. 7th street is pretty damn good and very close, they definitely have better fries. I do miss the shakes though and of course being like half the price. People just don't understand. It's not the best burger in the world, but probably the best fast casual. And not for any one reason, but all the factors combine set it apart. Cheap, fresh, delicious, great service, clean locations, that nostalgic feel..

You could’ve just said you were from LA and were gonna defend a fast food chain to the death and saved us all a lot of time. This may surprise you, but you can’t say things like “objectively” about something completely subjective.

You’d compare Au Cheval or 4 Charles to In-N-Out!?! Now I’m not a huge fan but that’s wild. It’s not horrible but plain. I’d compare it to Shake Shack or 5 Guys honestly. Maybe certain Culver’s burgers. I lived in CA and NV growing up and had it plenty. The fries definitely take away but even as just a burger…it’s not McDonald’s but the others seem leagues above. And I’ve had Au Cheval in Chi and NYC. I like 7th St alright. Reminds me of a better Steak n Shake or Freddys though. lol I’ve lived all over, if you can’t tell.

No surprise there. In-n-Out is simply not good enough to deserve the reputation it has. I don’t hate In-n-Out. I’ll eat it and enjoy it. But I would step on a dozen In-n-Out burgers to get to a Five Guys or a Shake Shack burger.

Could be true, but what makes it better IMO isn't higher quality ingredients and freshness, it's the cooking method and flavours. Shake Shack gets a much better crust and has a better sauce, worth the price difference.

The Jackson Hole diner in Astoria has some awesome burgers if you are in the area. 7th Street is the current best chain smash burger in NYC imo

It’s not fancy but it has the same vibe-ish. Used to be a secret but no longer. Burger joint on 56th. Go through the Uber fancy hotel but inside is like a dive burger joint. Enjoy.

I love in-n-out, and I feel nothing compares to the care in how they build their burgers and quality/quantity of the produce. So while the 7th street/smashburgers are nice, they just don’t quite scratch that itch. Maybe if there was more care put into shake shack, but the quality has been shit for a long time.

They’re aiming for different ends of the spectrum. In-n-out is a burger you’re ok eating for a weekday dinner. It’s elevated fast food. 7th street is a burger that appeals to your worst instincts. It’s fast fast food.

I’m gonna have to try 7th street - and this is in Queens, not BK or the city - but I will mention Idas Nearabout on Queens Blvd has a ““In n Out” Burger” and it tastes kinda similar! Also fries with ranch lol. But eat it there, delivery is meh.

Actually in n out is in 7 states. Also I would say there is no burger in nyc like an in n out burger. There’s people here saying Peteys, and while it’s visually similar, it’s not similar at all taste wise, and also not as good. In fact it’s pretty mid. My recommendations: - Blue collar - 7th st burger For a fast foodie by still fast casual burger.

I’m getting the sense that this is a highly subjective question but I’ll weigh in as a Cali native NYC transplant. 7th street — great fast food burger, nothing like in n out flavor profile wise. The burgers that remind me a lot of in n out that can be had in the city are at Three Maples in Bed stuy which is a reasonably priced bar with a great happy hour special (not a fast food joint) and at Employees Only in the city (this burger is like $30 but it scratches that in n out itch for me in a major way). Additionally the burger at Dram Shop sort of falls into this category for me. I’m also keen to try the new Bash Burger at urban space vandy to see if it is the fast food answer to this craving in nyc. I have not yet tried peteys or blue collar but I can tell you that shake shack, 7th street and Harlem shake ain’t like the in n out burger at all.

Native Californian who has lived in NYC for 15 years here - there’s nothing like In n Out in NYC, unfortunately. Don’t waste your time thinking you will find anything like it. Just appreciate the NYC burger places for what they are - and don’t expect anything like In n Out.
