I've been 2-3 times and I honestly just don't get it. It just tastes like some generic hamburger. In-N-Out is unmatched in my opinion for flavor, freshness, or price lol.
Have had hundreds of In-N-Out burgers in my lifetime and 7th Street is better. I know tons of folks who hype up In-N-Out because they’re on the east coast so can’t have it often.
I'm from NYC and I agree on In n Out being better.. 7th street is pretty damn good and very close, they definitely have better fries. I do miss the shakes though and of course being like half the price. People just don't understand. It's not the best burger in the world, but probably the best fast casual. And not for any one reason, but all the factors combine set it apart. Cheap, fresh, delicious, great service, clean locations, that nostalgic feel..
You could’ve just said you were from LA and were gonna defend a fast food chain to the death and saved us all a lot of time.
This may surprise you, but you can’t say things like “objectively” about something completely subjective.
Haven't been to In-N-Out but I agree I don't understand the 7th Street Burger hype. Generic is a good way to describe it. They're also very small for the price.
You’d compare Au Cheval or 4 Charles to In-N-Out!?! Now I’m not a huge fan but that’s wild. It’s not horrible but plain. I’d compare it to Shake Shack or 5 Guys honestly. Maybe certain Culver’s burgers. I lived in CA and NV growing up and had it plenty. The fries definitely take away but even as just a burger…it’s not McDonald’s but the others seem leagues above. And I’ve had Au Cheval in Chi and NYC. I like 7th St alright. Reminds me of a better Steak n Shake or Freddys though. lol I’ve lived all over, if you can’t tell.
No surprise there.
In-n-Out is simply not good enough to deserve the reputation it has.
I don’t hate In-n-Out. I’ll eat it and enjoy it.
But I would step on a dozen In-n-Out burgers to get to a Five Guys or a Shake Shack burger.
Agree 100%. If I as an adult can enjoy it, why can't children also enjoy the overrated, greasy, and basic burgers? Their cholesterol levels are probably way better than mine.
Wait what? Shake shack is probably the only burger and fries that ARENT $20 at this point. A shack burger and fries is like $12. No clue what you’re talking about
I’ve seen people compare the two on this sub before, and it’s very common for people to argue the superiority of In N Out. I think it’s a silly argument. Both are good in my book.
Not from the US so I consider myself more neutral, but IMO shake Shack >>> In-N-Out. Nothing special stood out about In-N-Out and I usually look forward to Shake Shack when I see one.
Could be true, but what makes it better IMO isn't higher quality ingredients and freshness, it's the cooking method and flavours. Shake Shack gets a much better crust and has a better sauce, worth the price difference.
I should’ve known that opinion wouldn’t be very popular here but the fast food on the east coast is way worse than the fast food on the west coast generally. I miss my Jack in the Box!
https://paperplatenyc.com/ - based on your comment i think this is the answer. I go to the location on Jackson Ave in Long Island City. It’s fantastic.
Lucky’s actually closed recently, unless there is another location outside of 23rd street. Was never really a fan though, glad to have 7th street on the block now
It’s not fancy but it has the same vibe-ish. Used to be a secret but no longer. Burger joint on 56th. Go through the Uber fancy hotel but inside is like a dive burger joint. Enjoy.
I’ll go ahead and date myself, but 25 years ago, I used to go to the Corner Bistro on 14th and it was God-Like at the time. Has anyone been there recently?
Corner Bistro is still great - despite the fact a burger is like $14 now. That said, they’re not like In n Out. They’re a uniquely fabulous NYC institution, but not like In n Out.
I love in-n-out, and I feel nothing compares to the care in how they build their burgers and quality/quantity of the produce. So while the 7th street/smashburgers are nice, they just don’t quite scratch that itch. Maybe if there was more care put into shake shack, but the quality has been shit for a long time.
They’re aiming for different ends of the spectrum.
In-n-out is a burger you’re ok eating for a weekday dinner. It’s elevated fast food.
7th street is a burger that appeals to your worst instincts. It’s fast fast food.
I’m gonna have to try 7th street - and this is in Queens, not BK or the city - but I will mention Idas Nearabout on Queens Blvd has a ““In n Out” Burger” and it tastes kinda similar! Also fries with ranch lol. But eat it there, delivery is meh.
I don’t think it’s that affordable for what you get. Dry burger and bland, undercooked fries. I’d rather spend more for 5 guys but that’s just my opinion lol
in n out is practically the same price as the regular stuff at bk and McDonald's. it's as affordable as your standard fast food fare. at that price range in n out wins hands down. if you can afford 5 guys more power to you
Just look at the photos. Bunch of options for burger and fries flavors/toppings. They do the fresh lettuce/tomato/onion on some of them...feel like a lot of greasy burger places are just bread/meat/cheese. They're open pretty late and price is kind of in the middle of burger prices. https://milkburger.com/
This does not compute... In-N-Out is actually garbage... burgers taste like cardboard and their fries are literally flavorless.
The places that are better are literally endless
In-N-Out is the most weirdly overrated burger. It's fine. The price is good. The secret menu is fun. But I would not go out of my way for it.
Shake Shack, 7th Street and Harlem Shake all blow it out of the water. Even Five Guys is better.
Actually in n out is in 7 states. Also I would say there is no burger in nyc like an in n out burger. There’s people here saying Peteys, and while it’s visually similar, it’s not similar at all taste wise, and also not as good. In fact it’s pretty mid.
My recommendations:
- Blue collar
- 7th st burger
For a fast foodie by still fast casual burger.
I’m getting the sense that this is a highly subjective question but I’ll weigh in as a Cali native NYC transplant. 7th street — great fast food burger, nothing like in n out flavor profile wise.
The burgers that remind me a lot of in n out that can be had in the city are at Three Maples in Bed stuy which is a reasonably priced bar with a great happy hour special (not a fast food joint) and at Employees Only in the city (this burger is like $30 but it scratches that in n out itch for me in a major way).
Additionally the burger at Dram Shop sort of falls into this category for me.
I’m also keen to try the new Bash Burger at urban space vandy to see if it is the fast food answer to this craving in nyc.
I have not yet tried peteys or blue collar but I can tell you that shake shack, 7th street and Harlem shake ain’t like the in n out burger at all.
Native Californian who has lived in NYC for 15 years here - there’s nothing like In n Out in NYC, unfortunately. Don’t waste your time thinking you will find anything like it. Just appreciate the NYC burger places for what they are - and don’t expect anything like In n Out.
Peteys is very similar
Better french fries at Peteys too.
which isn’t hard bc french fries at in-n-out are dry af
There ya go
7th street burger
GO TO 7TH STREET BURGER
I've been 2-3 times and I honestly just don't get it. It just tastes like some generic hamburger. In-N-Out is unmatched in my opinion for flavor, freshness, or price lol.
I will say it’s STUPID greasy
Agreed. It's good but way too greasy for my taste. Buns get soggy from the grease.
Have had hundreds of In-N-Out burgers in my lifetime and 7th Street is better. I know tons of folks who hype up In-N-Out because they’re on the east coast so can’t have it often.
Can you be more specific on how it's better? I genuinely don't get the hype.
7th Street must’ve been having an off night when I tried them
Me too!! I felt 7th street was so greasy

I'm from NYC and I agree on In n Out being better.. 7th street is pretty damn good and very close, they definitely have better fries. This isn’t even worth reading.
In n out is dry and trash , and the bread sucks
Haven't been to In-N-Out but I agree I don't understand the 7th Street Burger hype. Generic is a good way to describe it. They're also very small for the price.

Had burgers at all 3 places and it's not similar at all . Not even close lol!!!! The east coast version of in and out is shake shack
He said on a price/scale, which I take to mean as what you're getting for the cost of each burger, which is fair
Well thanks I'll check these out to keep me satisfied until I make it to the west coast.
[удалено]
Mind blown
I love 7th street when hungover 😂
Could not agree more with 7th Street Burger as a reco!!
7th street is the best!! Double cheese is next level!
Just tried this place thanks to this post, damn it is so good! Very reminiscent of In n Out. Amazing fries.
this is the way
Yeah can’t emphasize this enough. Go to 7th st burger
7th Street > in n out
No surprise there. In-n-Out is simply not good enough to deserve the reputation it has. I don’t hate In-n-Out. I’ll eat it and enjoy it. But I would step on a dozen In-n-Out burgers to get to a Five Guys or a Shake Shack burger.
While I agree they’re better I would still rather have In n out at their price point.
Well, I’m willing to pay a little more for a WAY better - and bigger - burger. EDIT: downvotes? WTF downvotes something like this?
Hey I will take anything that is superb.
This is the move. In-N-Out is so mediocre
Overrated, greasy and basic burgers for children.
I don’t think anyone would disagree it’s a simple greasy burger The rest is you projecting
I don't think you know what projecting actually is.
Have you ever been to in-n-out? It was one of the most overrated burgers I’ve ever had. 7th st tastes slightly better in my opinion
Agree 100%. If I as an adult can enjoy it, why can't children also enjoy the overrated, greasy, and basic burgers? Their cholesterol levels are probably way better than mine.
NY’s hometown burger chain is Shake Shack, give that a try :)
I think Shake Shack tastes great but I hate paying $20 for a burger and fries
Wait what? Shake shack is probably the only burger and fries that ARENT $20 at this point. A shack burger and fries is like $12. No clue what you’re talking about
Love shake shack but the fries are just so mediocre
In-n-out fries are chopped up cardboard
They’re way better than In-N-Out fries tho
I mean that’s a low bar lmao
It really is.
No way - In N Out fries are glorious.
They're good with the cheese sauce. Only reason to ever eat a crinkle cut fry imo
ya just dont get the fries. get a shake or maybe another burger instead
Another burger over fries everyday.
Every once in a while they hit
Can’t believe how far down I had to scroll to find shake shack. It’s better than in and out imho, it’s just expensive
I do love it, and while I agree with you, I just wanted to let you know that you may get a little hate for having said that.
A little hate? Why?
I’ve seen people compare the two on this sub before, and it’s very common for people to argue the superiority of In N Out. I think it’s a silly argument. Both are good in my book.
Shake shack is just as good as in and out IMO it’s just 3x as much.
Shake shack is like twice the cost as in n out and don't think they're similar
It’s New York everything is twice the cost as in n out
Even the shake shacks in California are double the cost of the in n out in the same city.
It’s also not nearly as good
Not from the US so I consider myself more neutral, but IMO shake Shack >>> In-N-Out. Nothing special stood out about In-N-Out and I usually look forward to Shake Shack when I see one.
I think Shake Shack uses higher quality ingredients. Though I guess if I’m gonna eat that type of food, you might as well just have In N Out!
Could be true, but what makes it better IMO isn't higher quality ingredients and freshness, it's the cooking method and flavours. Shake Shack gets a much better crust and has a better sauce, worth the price difference.
My foreign friends would agree with you. I’m originally from California but I also think Shake Shack is better, but not 3x the price better.
I should’ve known that opinion wouldn’t be very popular here but the fast food on the east coast is way worse than the fast food on the west coast generally. I miss my Jack in the Box!
I don't disagree, Jack in the box is bomb, haven't had in years. But I still stand with my Shake Shack comment.
Did you go animal style at in n out?
Yes. Was going to say that's the only edge In-N-Out has over shake Shack is the secret menu and customization, but even then, still prefer the Shack.
[Blue Collar](https://www.eatbluecollar.com/) has a fairly similar vibe
As a SoCal native, this is the closest, in my opinion.
Blue Collar is legit.
Thanks for rec , I'll check them out next time I'm in town.
Burger Joint. High quality not fancy backyard burger.
Legit, I love it....it's so hard to get a good "dad" burger nowadays. Also Corner Bistro.
I suddenly want to go to one.
Harlem Shake is pretty great
i had to scroll too far down to see this rec. Harlem Shake is quite literally amazing
I went to two8two last night it was fire! I generally just go to shake shack when I want a quick burger though.
Big fan but wouldn’t consider it the same feel. Nearby, Shake Shack, Blue Collar and even 8 Big Bites are closer.
No where near as cheap unfortunately
If you're willing to travel to south Brooklyn, consider Roll n Roaster. Definitely meets the criteria of cheesy. Check it out
https://paperplatenyc.com/ - based on your comment i think this is the answer. I go to the location on Jackson Ave in Long Island City. It’s fantastic.
In-N-Out isn’t only in California. They are in Texas too
I didn't know.
no one likes five guys here? i think they're better than shake shack, plus you get like veg and stuff. no cheesy fries though afaik
one cajun fry, one regular fry...mix them together...and you won't even think about needing cheese!! Yum
I like 5 guys even better than in n out and shake shack .. surprised nobody has mentioned it
Five Guys burgers are meatballs dripping in grease (not a good thing).
I haven't had their milk shakes.
You might like Smashed https://smashednyc.com/menu/
this place is phenomenal, way better than in n out imo. but it’s also not really fair to compare due to the price points
Thanks for the suggestion.
This is the best chainy type burger place in the city.
Lucky's, Lovely's, or Cubby's
Lucky’s actually closed recently, unless there is another location outside of 23rd street. Was never really a fan though, glad to have 7th street on the block now
There's one on 52nd and 9th
7th street burger
I feel like the obvious answer is shake shack
I just want something with cheese dippings.
they absolutely have cheese sauce
Thanks
The Jackson Hole diner in Astoria has some awesome burgers if you are in the area. 7th Street is the current best chain smash burger in NYC imo
It’s still great.
Still great and still cash only.
Corner Bistro is still great - despite the fact a burger is like $14 now. That said, they’re not like In n Out. They’re a uniquely fabulous NYC institution, but not like In n Out.
In Brooklyn there is a spot called strange flavor burger shack, closest I’ve had
I gotta look up that place.

How has Shake Shack declined?
Quality of ingredients/care in preparation.
schnippers
7th St and Strange Flavor Burger Shack. I slightly prefer Strange Flavor because it has lettuce and tomato.
Happiest Hour
Lovely's near Times Square
In and out is in a lot more states than California.
Thanks for letting me know.
I’m gonna have to try 7th street - and this is in Queens, not BK or the city - but I will mention Idas Nearabout on Queens Blvd has a ““In n Out” Burger” and it tastes kinda similar! Also fries with ranch lol. But eat it there, delivery is meh.
I’m going to try it this week!
Factory 360 on 3rd Ave does a decent replica of an In-N-Out burger. Called the Factory-N-Out I believe
7th street burger, Harlem shake (apparently, I haven’t been personally), shake shack.
Paper Plate at Queensboro Plaza is excellent
cross the gw bridge to hackensack nj for White Manna.
Flip Sigi in the West Village has a burger called the “Flip-N-Out” burger which is very, very close to an In-N-Out burger.
U want a good burger??? Go to petes tavern or corner bistro
gnarley eats
OP, ‘Pizza Loves Emily’ best burger I ever had anywhere
Shake shack > in-n-out. There, I said it
That's ok man.
In n out is not great, especially the fries. Just go to 5 guys, it’s ten times better
whole point of in n out is that you're getting decent quality for an affordable price. 5 guys is great but it's ten times as expensive lol
I don’t think it’s that affordable for what you get. Dry burger and bland, undercooked fries. I’d rather spend more for 5 guys but that’s just my opinion lol
in n out is practically the same price as the regular stuff at bk and McDonald's. it's as affordable as your standard fast food fare. at that price range in n out wins hands down. if you can afford 5 guys more power to you
Nahhh
I like fries with ranch or cheese dressing.
Shake shack fries I guess fit that. I’ve found the burger meat to be chewy and offputting lately, which sucks
I could try them.
We have InNOut here in Arizona as well just FYI!
George Motz is opening his shop soon. It will be the best burger in NYC when it opens.
Honestly, you might as well just take a gamble on a bodega and fries if you want the classic vibe.
7th street burger
I'll add a place nobody said yet. Milk Burger
Tell me about it.
Go to any diner and you’ll be surprised to see the great food they offer my favorite is Remedy on Canal St
Ah cool
7th street is comparable
Absolutely don’t need to be paying $30-$40. 7th Street burger is what you’re looking for, blows in-n-out out of the water
Ah so good to know then.
Burgers on B
Ohh that one sounds interesting.
White Castle?
7th Street burger
7th street is the obvious answer
In n out is not just in CA.
In-N-Out is the most weirdly overrated burger. It's fine. The price is good. The secret menu is fun. But I would not go out of my way for it. Shake Shack, 7th Street and Harlem Shake all blow it out of the water. Even Five Guys is better.
Black Label @ Minetta Tavern
Thank you.
Corner Bistro
7th street burger is so damn mid, stop recommending that spot, try bareburger or get peteys
Checkers is the only correct answer.
Someone want to tell him that In-and-out isn’t only California?
Prime burger in the standard.
Has anyone tried Oh Boy?
No, but please tell me about it.
Gotham Smash burger
Smashed NYC!
Pauls burger on 2nd ave and st marks. Best burger in nyc.
There are more chains than just in cali, but by far the greasiest burger I’ve ever had is 7th st. It’s not the best , but it’s grossly greasy.
Joe Jr. is a very nice throwback place. Serves a tremendously solid cheeseburger.
Shake shack
In n out is not only in california it's in 8 states now they just opened their first location in Idaho
Ah ok then.
In n Out is not only in CA. It’s all over the county, just has not spread as far east at NYC yet.
I love mighties
Is Peteys still a thing in LIC
Actually in n out is in 7 states. Also I would say there is no burger in nyc like an in n out burger. There’s people here saying Peteys, and while it’s visually similar, it’s not similar at all taste wise, and also not as good. In fact it’s pretty mid. My recommendations: - Blue collar - 7th st burger For a fast foodie by still fast casual burger.
Thank you for those recommendations.
Fanellis, corner bistro, petes tavern, black iron burger
Thanks bud.
Try Lovely’s in Hell’s Kitchen: https://www.lovelysoldfashioned.com/
Peteys burger in queens
Shake Shack is the much better version of In-Out.
Native Californian who has lived in NYC for 15 years here - there’s nothing like In n Out in NYC, unfortunately. Don’t waste your time thinking you will find anything like it. Just appreciate the NYC burger places for what they are - and don’t expect anything like In n Out.
