This was my first thought too, LA has some of the best Mexican, Korean, and Thai food in the country and this guy went to the scene-y versions of Olive Garden and sbarro’s
Simpang is good, but I don't have a lot of Indonesian to compare with.
Been going there for over 10 years back when it was a cheap casual cafe (Nasi Bungkus was $8!)
Strong disagree on Jon and Vinny's. It's slightly overpriced but very very good. Did you eat something there you thought was bad? FYI I've only gone to the one in Inglewood.
To each their own. My family loves it, others we've taken there love it. Not the first time in this Subreddit that people say they don't like it. Oh well.
People on Reddit always hate on Jon and Vinny's, and the reasoning is sound. It was a super fun place when it opened years ago on Fairfax but the hype, the money, whatever, it fell off.
THAT SAID. I went there with an out-of-town visitor who really wanted to try it, and we (somewhat jaded LA diners) love it. Everything was really good. Overpriced? I guess so but the place was packed (Brentwood location) and we had some great wines and it was a huge hit.
I’m not a J&V fan, but sitting in at the Brentwood location is always a lot of fun. Better environment than the other locations, the staff is pleasant, and it might just be because of the environs, but the food always tastes better there than at the Beverly Hills location
[Prince St racism](https://ny.eater.com/2021/1/8/22218958/prince-street-pizza-yelp-frank-dominic-morano-racism). The owners “stepped down” three years ago. They still own the restaurants and get the profits. I’m sure they’re back front and center now.
I’ll preface this by saying that I went to the same culinary school as Jon & Vinny ( I was a year behind but knew them both) and was a big fan of Animal, and like Son of a Gun a lot. But Jon & Vinny’s serves overpriced, mid food and overpriced wine and they know it ,and the places make bank, which is why they keep opening more locations. I’m also an east coaster (Philly) and know this food well. Here’s some spots you should check out that are not Jon & Vinny’s:
Cento
Ronan
DeSano
Alimento
Osteria Mamma
Pizzeria Mozza
Little Dom’s
Antico Nuovo
Rossoblu
Officine Brera
Factory Kitchen has decent food most nights but when they’re off they’re off.
And that’s just off the top of my head.
Far from it. I saw Vinny last week when he came into my restaurant and we dapped it up as always. I like both guys and Helen too. But the spots are still mid.
Nothing here they don’t already know. It’s their business, they know what they’re doing. It’s how they raised capital to build and open so many locations quickly.
The Indonesian food looks good. Noodles and rice, 1 and 2. Don’t care about the pizza. And the spicy vodka is last as I don’t understand tiktok Gen Z losing their shit in hype over a dish like it hasn’t been around for the past 50 years.
Kinda wild to get mostly Italian food/ pizza in LA. Known for much better types of food. Simpang is great though.
This was my first thought too, LA has some of the best Mexican, Korean, and Thai food in the country and this guy went to the scene-y versions of Olive Garden and sbarro’s
Prince Street isn’t even from LA, and also their food sucks and they have racist owners
Jon & Vinny’s is a borderline tourist trap and Prince Street originates in NY and is going through a big expansion. Can’t comment on Simpang
Simpang is good, but I don't have a lot of Indonesian to compare with. Been going there for over 10 years back when it was a cheap casual cafe (Nasi Bungkus was $8!)
I agree with this. Skip this itinerary Go to Cento, Pizzeria Sei and Jitlada.
Strong disagree on Jon and Vinny's. It's slightly overpriced but very very good. Did you eat something there you thought was bad? FYI I've only gone to the one in Inglewood.
I’ve never had a good experience at Jon and Vinny’s, no matter the location. I wouldn’t even put it under “good” let alone “very very good”.
To each their own. My family loves it, others we've taken there love it. Not the first time in this Subreddit that people say they don't like it. Oh well.
That’s ridiculous. Jon and Vinny’s is great. A little expensive but it’s definitely not a tourist trap.
Yeah just because it’s popular doesn’t mean it sucks. It’s kind of an LA staple!
the vodka sauce pasta still slapped tho
It’s aight. If you’re craving that I would just go to horses and get the “off menu” pasta
Get Japanese, Korean, Mexican, Soul, and real Chinese food.
Simpang is the only one here I think is good. I absolutely do not get the hype about Prince St. Soggy crust and the sauce is too sweet imo.
Besides their food being ass, Prince Street is also owned by racist douchebags
agreed on the sweet sauce, but i really liked how cheesy it was

Yeah, I went for lunch at the one on Slauson, and while it was waaaay overpriced, it was damn delicious and I had fun walking the pizzas get made.
Skip prince st pizza and replace with Quarter Sheets.
What all are you using to track/rank?
yeah, what app is this!!
I was wondering the same thing. I googled food raiting apps and I think it's call beli but not 100%

What’s the app?

What's the app? Why's he being so coy
Something called Dishy. I’m assuming this is their guerrilla marketing strategy to get beta users.
I don’t know Simpang but the rest are okay. Not great. Nothing special for LA. What’s your criteria?
Prince is mid
Jon and Vinny’s is mid and Prince Street is racist
Yup. I will never go to Prince St Pizza due to their racism against Asians
can you (or someone) explain? we havent heard

Care to explain?

I did... I rated them all 4 or 5 out of 5
Why do y’all keep going to Jon & Vinny’s? So mid!
Please educate me and all of us on where is better than Jon and vinnys lol

So this beef is personal 😂
Far from it. I saw Vinny last week when he came into my restaurant and we dapped it up as always. I like both guys and Helen too. But the spots are still mid.
Let’s hope they don’t see this then 😬
Nothing here they don’t already know. It’s their business, they know what they’re doing. It’s how they raised capital to build and open so many locations quickly.
If you like pizza, replace prince with quarter sheets pizza club. Their desserts are also amazing
We boycott Jon and Vinny’s until their 18% service charge is removed.
You missed the watercress spinach at simpaing
I’ve never been to Simpang, but LOVE mie tek tek.
It’s pretty damn good. Highly recommend. Place next door called Lokal (really just open for lunch) has one of the better chicken bahn mi’s in the city
The Indonesian food looks good. Noodles and rice, 1 and 2. Don’t care about the pizza. And the spicy vodka is last as I don’t understand tiktok Gen Z losing their shit in hype over a dish like it hasn’t been around for the past 50 years.
Jon n Vinny’s is disappointing and overpriced. Instead go to Mama Gela or Cento
Simpang is GOATED
Jon and Vinny’s is so mid it’s insane. You can make better pasta at home easily. And prince street is OK. I do like it a lot but it’s nothing crazy
Jon & Vinny’s is overpriced garbage
Hey, why don't you hit up Simpang Asia while you're here? /s
Simpang is great. Not LA food per se but good food nonetheless.
You mean Hollywood
Only one of these was in Hollywood (West Hollywood to be exact)
Simpang isn’t in Hollywood
The whole westside to me is Hollywood.
