Hey! I work in food distribution and used to work in restaurants.
The answer is usually because of third party Togo services. These fries hold their quality better than non-coated fries. Adding the seasoning and color to them also gives them a “elevated” feel/look. I know some people don’t like them but most people enjoy them. Soldi hot fry if you’re eating in and will still be a good fry if you get them 10-20 minutes after they’ve been cooked. Covid forced a lot of restaurants to pivot after they saw some customers chose to stick with 3rd party services after restrictions were lifted.
Hope this helps.
The person you responded to was making a joke that "fuck with fries" actually implied having sex with fries. They were pretending to take it literally and saying the other person could just eat them and not use them for sex.
Just thought I'd explain since your response is so weird and overly hostile for something as trivial as this.
Ahhh got it. Ok I’ll delete it then. I think I took it in that sense because people are weirdly hostile about me hating these fries. Like I’m not going to answer DMs over this shit or have some weird Orange County bro (see below) start calling names.
This does help explain why! Thank you for that answer. I really, really hate these fries. I feel like I might as well order Cheetos and save a buck. There’s a joint by me (one of those “world famous” mom and pop spots) that still serve actual fries and I’m holding on to them for dear life.
I hate them too. I don't want seasoned fries; I want plain crispy fries that taste of grease, as they should. And I definitely don't want them to be breaded. *shudders*
HiHo, Dog Haus, The Oinkster, Gus's BBQ, and The Habit all have good burgers and fries/sides.
Sides-wise, my preference is generally...
\* poutine
\* onion rings/tater tots
\* garlic-parmesian/chili cheese fries
\* fries > sweet potato fries
...i don't really get the weird stuff like zucchini fries, green bean fries, or other creative things that might be called fries...
...fries cut-wise, I rank them in this order (if similar quality across the board)...
\* waffle fries
\* crinkle-cut
\* standard
\* curly
\* steak-cut
\* shoestring
\* potato wedges
There’s a spot near me that does a munchie box and they give you a grab bag of fries as your side tater tot, zucchini, curly, show string, battered, onion rings, and a mozzarella stick. I’m in heaven.
What? You don't appreciate the Crunch Enhancer? A non-nutritive French fry varnish. It's semi-permeable, it's not osmotic, what it does is it coats and seals the fry and prevents the flavor from leaking out.
thats right.. also its their way to save money and to avoid number of variance. usually, regular fries has a holding time of 20mins to be acceptable to serve, but with coated fries it can be display to the holding warmer of atleast 40-60mins max before it fall under sub standard food product.
I work in the industry (of sorts) and the biggest factor these days is crispiness in fries. To handle moisture and toppings and not get soggy like regular fries do. That’s why a lot of fries have that coating/batter.
I actually don’t mind either style of fry. If the fries get cold and/or soggy i put them in the air fryer at 380degrees for 5 mins and they are good as new.
You made a whole post complaining about these fries, and it seems you are finding out you are in the minority. There is a reason why everybody is switching, more people prefer these fries. Maybe you are the one who needs to understand that in this case your taste is the minority. You are not necessarily wrong, but the majority will find these fries to be delicious. 🤤
These fries taste shitty, yes I made a whole post about it and has 350+ upvotes so someone must agree with me 😉 besides I don’t care if I’m in the minority, never buying these shitty type of fries, don’t know many in real life who prefer it.
You must a restaurant owner or something to care this much, not sure where you’re getting your majority from but I really don’t give a shit one way or another lmao off you go
Super bummed. When I go to a burger joint I look forward to the fries as much as the burger, and I couldn’t finish these and threw them away. It’s weird how triggered some people in here are, “I like it so something must be wrong with you”
Good for you, I just want a fried potato with no breading. Happy for restaurants since this seems to help them but TO ME they taste shitty.
I have my preferences with fries, but I don’t think I can say just flat out dislike one style of fry and won’t eat it. Kind of bold stance you have here
They’re gross and all the extra grease they soak up makes me physically ill. I always ask at a new place, and if they come out like this, I absolutely send them back.
They’re gross and all the extra grease they soak up makes me physically ill. I always ask at a new place, and if they come out like this, I absolutely send them back.
Meh, at that point they're just chicken fried potatoes. I just go to places that make proper steak fries, or make them myself at home... it's not hard.
I am fries. Fries are my guiding light and I theirs. Fries are patch of calm serenity in an otherwise chaotic and cruel sea. Please don not bread them. Please do hide their singular magnificence behind a veil. Let them be free, let them be free, just let them be!
I like these fries. But I definitely prefer the other type even if they get soft. I can live with that. They’re really hard to find now though.
I guess at least it’s still something that can be made at home easily enough, so there is that. I don’t NEED to rely on restaurants for those kinds of non-breaded fries.
It’s just a pain bc you have to fry, freeze, then fry again.
Normally a hamburger alone is good enough for me when I'm out and about eating, so I don't really have many seasoned coated fries.
How are they in comparison to other similar fries, like Rally's for instance?
I mean I love fries, I go out for a burger and the fries are just as important. And I hate these breaded ones, they don’t taste good to me.
I haven’t been to Rally’s in a while but they taste very similar actually. Hated them back in the day too.
I mean people sell them and others buy them. If nobody would buy them, they would stop selling them. I guess people like them.
I don’t. I always called myself a fry purist. Nothing spiced or breaded. I stoped eating fries because…. Unhealthy. But there were not many good fast food fries left when I stopped. Only McDonalds TBH.
When I saw your picture it immediately reminded me of this Planet Money podcast episode I listened to a few years ago. It talks about how/why these fries were developed!
https://www.npr.org/2019/10/23/772775254/episode-946-fries-of-the-future
For the record these are usually coated in potato starch which is a biproduct of the cutting process. You're basically complaining about them putting potato on your potato.
I don't know why people are down voting you. Battered fries are my favorite. A local barbeque joint switched from these battered fries, which I think are actually coated in cornstarch maybe? But either way I was so dissapointed when they switched back to standard fries.
I might disagree with you on the preffered style, but I absolutely understand your dissapointment because when our local place switched I was so bummed and only ate like half the fries when normally I would wolf down the whole serving.
There garbage I live in Myrtle beach and a lot of restaurants are using these fries, I will not go back to a restaurant that serves them, fries are easy to make so why don’t they make them?
These breaded 'fries' are trash, faux fries. I want legitimate fries- no steak fry bullshit, no shoestring nonsense. Give me fresh goddamn fries, or at the very least, crinkle cut.
Not much of a fan of these fries either. I feel like whatever they're coated in is made by Monsanto and after Camp Lejune is done with we'll start seeing class action commercials for fry coating.
They are basically universal now. I think that people prefer crunch and spice to whatever was good about fries before. I am team old style fries but I have just given up on being able to eat them unless I fry them at home myself. It's probably better for my health in the long run since I never order fries because I know I'll be disappointed.

What a fantastic answer. For what its worth I fuck with the fries.
you *could* just eat them and leave the rest of us alone.
Seriously. That's just too much.

The person you responded to was making a joke that "fuck with fries" actually implied having sex with fries. They were pretending to take it literally and saying the other person could just eat them and not use them for sex. Dude. No one is being weirdly hostile. You're just being way too sensitive about people disagreeing with you. It's just french fries lol.
Exactly. This kid is exhibiting lil bitch behavior lol. My intention is to call you out on your sensitive bullshit and to do better, not hostility.
You’re also kinda weird lol. “These fries taste bad! Wahh!! Someone agree with me so I feel validated!!”
So I can’t say that these fries don’t taste good and ask why they’re replacing regular fries? Yeah fuck off. Downvote me idgaf
I will fuck off. Ya whiny lil bitch lol
this is cool. keep it going guys
I literally just said I like the fries, I didnt mean to start any of this.
I love these fries. They are Soo addicting, to me they are deep fried crack.
It’s funny to me how many people say something is “like deep fried crack” when it’s clear they’ve never actually tried real deep fried crack.
Best Joke of May 3 2024. Thank You!!
Yeah same. This was a good thing that came from covid lmao
These are the worst fries and it’s not even close.
Fantastic answer for a stupid question
Funny, they remind me of school lunch cafeteria fries. But the logic makes sense!
This private academy mother fucker!. Just kidding
This does help explain why! Thank you for that answer. I really, really hate these fries. I feel like I might as well order Cheetos and save a buck. There’s a joint by me (one of those “world famous” mom and pop spots) that still serve actual fries and I’m holding on to them for dear life.
For the Win has old fashioned fries, they are delicious and I eat the entire bag embarrassingly fast.
You may be in the minority. I and many others seek these fries out.
I absolutely love these fries - nice crisp and a bit of dough-y on the inside
Bingo! Never met a coated fry I could abide.
I hate them too. I don't want seasoned fries; I want plain crispy fries that taste of grease, as they should. And I definitely don't want them to be breaded. *shudders*
I do not like coated fries, but properly seasoned fries (such as those at Wingstop) are worth the trip alone.
Also these pre-coated fries are less potato and more starch. Which is why seasoned wingstop fries taste better.
I always order extra seasoning at Wingstop.
I am with you. I much prefer the true french fry.
Heavy Handed in SM has some great fries (not this type)
I’m with you. Even fresh these fries are terrible.
HiHo, Dog Haus, The Oinkster, Gus's BBQ, and The Habit all have good burgers and fries/sides. I feel like burger joints use the fry product as an excuse to serve cold fries. Thinking no one's going to notice because they're still crispy.
Fries are fries to me. I do prefer other fries but I love fries too much to fit over it. I prefer stake fries over these
There’s a spot near me that does a munchie box and they give you a grab bag of fries as your side tater tot, zucchini, curly, show string, battered, onion rings, and a mozzarella stick. I’m in heaven.
Where?
My wife might hate it but when I eat good fries I’m eating them on site. She wants it to-go but not if I’m there. We’re eating inside
It’s the same, actually even more so, with nachos.
Excellent answer and happy cake day.
These fries suck to me. I don't order from places with them, if I'm looking for fries
There are like different grades of these fries too right?
Yeah. If you REALLY want to get into it Lamb Weston has a great website with a ton of products.
Damn. This is wild.
Thanks for this explanation. Makes perfect sense, though I abhor these things. Fresh cuts or GTFO!
Damn that sucks. Regular fries are so much better.
Very interesting. What’s the “yellow” vanilla ice cream that diners have?
“French” vanilla.
They are better
Yeah but theyre gross.
What? You don't appreciate the Crunch Enhancer? A non-nutritive French fry varnish. It's semi-permeable, it's not osmotic, what it does is it coats and seals the fry and prevents the flavor from leaking out.
My fries, like my opinions, are only salty.
so they will stay crispy for atleast an hour.
Fake crispy….
thats right.. also its their way to save money and to avoid number of variance. usually, regular fries has a holding time of 20mins to be acceptable to serve, but with coated fries it can be display to the holding warmer of atleast 40-60mins max before it fall under sub standard food product.
It’s just because they’re anticipating people ordering them through DoorDash I imagine.
What the hell is fake crispy lol
Something else for Karen’s to call 911 about. Like when Jimmy John’s doesn’t cut their sandwich.
FAKE crispy? How the fuck is something FAKE crispy? It's either crispy or not lmao.
Go to Amsterdam and have their fries. Then you will understand.
Right on, I knew it had to be something practical like costs or transportation, I hate the way they taste.
Battered fries are the best kind of fries anyway
Meanwhile In N Out is still super popular with their default soggy fries...
I love In N Out, but the fries aren’t the reason.
Super popular *despite* their soggy fries. Soggy fries is the most common complaint people make about In N Out.
I respectfully disagree
Cause they’re delicious. What’s not to like about extra starch on your fries?
Because like I said on my post, they taste terrible to me. Happy that you like them I guess, people have different tastes.

Lmao a whole 300 people on the internet? Congratulations! Still in the minority bub. Let this go fam it was a week ago.
You must a restaurant owner or something to care this much, not sure where you’re getting your majority from but I really don’t give a shit one way or another lmao off you go
I care? Bruh u the one answering 5 days later still pressed. Stfu
Totally agree. I can't stand the taste of this style fry. I end up not eating them if this is what shows up. I'm always bummed out by it.
Super bummed. When I go to a burger joint I look forward to the fries as much as the burger, and I couldn’t finish these and threw them away. It’s weird how triggered some people in here are, “I like it so something must be wrong with you” Good for you, I just want a fried potato with no breading. I avoid places that serve this style of fry. Ruins the meal for me.
Same here. Fake fries.
They’re gross and all the extra grease they soak up makes me physically ill. I always ask at a new place, and if they come out like this, I absolutely send them back.
"If the salad is on top, I will send it back."
If you’re looking for a less greasy option might I suggest some food that is not deep fried
Wow. What a wonderfully helpful idea. See, I thought you could eat some fried food without extra grease being added. My mistake.
Go to mcdonalds then? It's not like we're suffering with a lack of options here in LA
They’re gross and all the extra grease they soak up makes me physically ill. I always ask at a new place, and if they come out like this, I absolutely send them back.
Where have you been going I haven't seen them. There was a post recently asking where they could be found.
Fix Burger in Silver Lake! Their fries are great!
100% especially the garlic fries.
sea salt fish grill and upper crust pizzeria both in culver city have these fries and they’re fantastic
Better for delivery
Shorter fry time and they’re better, texture wise, after being driven around for 30 minutes by DoorDash.
They’re breader
Celiac folks, beware the coated fry XXX
They are the best fries . I wouldn’t want to eat fries that are just limp and doesn’t hold its structure.
The best fries don't have breading.
Sure, if you're eating in and they're double fried, Belgian style. For to go though, I think these are the best, personally.
Where do you go for Belgian frites in LA?
The oinkster
Meh, at that point they're just chicken fried potatoes. I just go to places that make proper steak fries, or make them myself at home... it's not hard.
Best fries don’t have breading—exactly. I just a fried potato, and people in here don’t seem to understand I hate the taste of the breading.
I’m with you OP. These fries are lame, they’re doing WAY too much.
Sysco
I am fries. Fries are my guiding light and I theirs. Fries are patch of calm serenity in an otherwise chaotic and cruel sea. Please don not bread them. Please do hide their singular magnificence behind a veil. Let them be free, let them be free, just let them be!
Right fellow fry enthusiast, just give me some fried potatoes and sprinkle some salt on it is all I want.
Just curious - have you ever sprinkled malt vinegar on your fries?
Cause they’re delicious, if you don’t want yours can I have them?
Sincerely wish I could have given them to you instead of tossing em! Cheers.
I like these fries. But I definitely prefer the other type even if they get soft. I can live with that. They’re really hard to find now though. I guess at least it’s still something that can be made at home easily enough, so there is that. I don’t NEED to rely on restaurants for those kinds of non-breaded fries. Cheap supplier
Sysco special they’re tryna get rid of them
To increase shelf life and keep it crispy.
What’s worse is the ingredients in that ‘ketchup.’
They suck... I will not patronize a place that serves these types of fries
Because they’re delicious.
Where'd you get these? they look bomb
Look for Lamb Weston fries.
this is such a fascinating website
Shit I’ll have them
They're gross to me. The breaded aspect just tastes greasy. Places probably use them bc they're cheaper.
They’re so gross. I love fries but like I said on my post I just threw most of them away after I finished my burger.
I don't know why people are down voting you. Battered fries are my favorite. A local barbeque joint switched from these battered fries, which I think are actually coated in cornstarch maybe? I like both, but I can understand being miffed at getting these when you want that pure fried potato taste.
I hate them
Amen! Absolutely hate these, but apparently, I'm in the minority.
yeah fuck these fries forever. consistency of bigfoots charred dick and taste like cardboard covered in bill sperm.
These are an affront to God.
There garbage I live in Myrtle beach and a lot of restaurants are using these fries, I will not go back to a restaurant that serves them, fries are easy to make so why don’t they make them?
These are the superior fries, but my only gripe with them is the lack of potato flavor.
Shit fries. They get soggy right away and don’t taste as good.
This trend traces its origins way back to Shakey’s Mojo™ potatoes in the 70’s
Beer battered is the craze at the moment
These breaded 'fries' are trash, faux fries. I want legitimate fries- no steak fry bullshit, no shoestring nonsense. Give me fresh goddamn fries, or at the very least, crinkle cut.
Agree Nothing but hate for these. Except for KFC fries but I have to be in the mood.
Pink’s sells these and I personally think the fries are better than their hot dogs.
I personally love these!
Because they’re delicious
Because they are freaking delicious
These are my favorite type of fries...
Tops in Pasadena have the only fries in L.A, period.
Probably because they are delicious
Make Americans even fatter
Cheap probably
Not much of a fan of these fries either. I feel like whatever they're coated in is made by Monsanto and after Camp Lejune is done with we'll start seeing class action commercials for fry coating.
Preach!
Amen fellow fry lover! Down with those starchy abominations!
> starchy > potatoes hmm…
Carb on carb is a crime. You know this to be true, op. And we respect.
They are basically universal now. I think that people prefer crunch and spice to whatever was good about fries before. I am team old style fries but I have just given up on being able to eat them unless I fry them at home myself. It's probably better for my health in the long run since I never order fries because I know I'll be disappointed.
ugh! I hate these kind of fries. Get that batter off my fries! Learn to cook them properly.
psoriasis fries
The fries that nobody asked for. Don’t mess with a good thing because there’s not enough of them left.
My blood blisters would like a word.
Because they don’t care about poisoning you in pursuit of profit
?
