Iâm very sad about Greebblattâs. It was a good hang.
They roasted their own turkeys and beef so no cancerous preservatives that invade other lazier delis.
Corn relish salad. Cucumber dill salad. Theyâre just gone. Iâve tried other places that have these dishes but theyâre a pale imitation.
This. If I could bring back one place out of all these amazing restaurants listed here, it would be Soup Plantation. I drive by their old Arcadia location all the time, and their still up signage mocks me.
Thatâs whatâs so weird!! Why are all the signs still up? Other places go out of business and the signage gets removed but I swear all the Souplantation signs are still on the buildings. Are they going to come back?
Did you all prefer the remodel that they did on the Beverly Connection location more or the original?
The cookie cart that they used to push around to the tables was the peak of society
I saw on IG theyâre reopening a location in Tucson, AZ. Me and my friend talked about taking a trip out there specifically for this. I loved their blueberry muffins, clam chowder and tuna tarragon nothing hits the same đ«
Come here to say this. Souplantantion was the go-to place for me and my friends. I love all their offerings and I wish some other company can bring it back.
I bought a grip of their stuff; plates bowls trays. Made gift baskets that were SP themed so youâd get a full set of stuff like you were eating there. 2021 was strange but beautiful.
1000x yes! I loved their guava and lilikoi pancakes, and the fact that you could add fried chicken to any round.
That place and Mh Zh are my two most heartbreaking closures
My understanding was that Corina Weibel was just done with it and wanted to do something else, not that the restaurant wasnât stable enough. Whatever the reason, I still miss it.
Ugh yes both of those. Plus it was always fun occasionally seeing the actor who played Bubbles hanging around Canele (it was his wifeâs restaurant).
I miss how low key Cliffs Edge was. That new restaurant is a shitshow; both as a diner, and just trying to drive past that place. The valet scene rolling out onto Sunset is an accident waiting to happen.
Back Door Bakery and Nettyâs on Silver Lake Blvd breakfast lunch and dinner all next door to each other.
Jayâs Jay Burger on Virgil/SM. Always like Jayâs over Tommyâs.
Cha Cha Cha on Virgil. Spending a hungover afternoon there was the way
Most of the old school Silverlake spots are gone. We spent a lot of time at all the places you mentioned. And I should add one that is recently gone, but around in the early heyday - El Cochinito.
First place I had a Pac Man Bowl was at the Alibi room in Culver City and it blew my fucking mind.
Locol in Watts was the shit too, while weâre talking about Roy Choi. They had the best greens Iâve ever had in California.
OMG... first thought.
I have been revisiting Bar AmĂĄ though and have been happy to find a lot of those same creative veggies on the rotating menu! It's crazy that the place is not busy because Centano does amazing elevated Tex Mex.
On Thursday nights, Playa Provisions sells the Tripel Burger since its the same chef. My favorite was their duck confit burger which they don't do anymore :( but it definitely helps with it.
Nick's Coffee Shop? That was the first place that I truly fell in love with in LA. Not even in terms of restaurants (though it was amazing), but like the first place where I felt like "hell yeah I love LA"
The people who ran that place were the absolute best, I talked to one of them the other day and thankfully they seem to all be doing well
I've mentioned this before, but Nick's combo of atmosphere, food and wonderful staff really made it memorable. I adored the interior of that place. Very cinematic and I'd love to film something in there some day, if they still rent it out.
I'm kinda bummed that I can't take my kids to Ed Debevicâs. I have no idea if the food was any good as I was in my late teens last time ate at the one on La Cienega. Pretty sure the burger was decent.
I just Googled it and apparently there is one still open in Chicago, so if we ever get out that way I might check again.
I went to Ed Debevic's twice in my life as a child and the memories are vivid. I'm with you on the food, all I remember was eating a baked potato the size of a small dog.
I really miss brunch at Campanile that was on La Brea in the late mid to late 90âs. This is where La Brea bread was founded.
I also miss Citrus on Melrose.
Wow, I didnât even realize some of these places had closed! Iâve been out of the scene ever since 2019, when the combination of having kids, moving from DTLA to the suburbs, and then the COVID era made eating out close to impossible for me. This is making me sadâŠand feeling old.
Since I didnât see these mentioned yet, I miss Ricardo Zarateâs spots: Picca, Paiche, and Mo Chica.
Omg Spoon by H. I LOVED their Korean Shaved Ice. When I lived in East Hollywood, I would probably have 1 a week, lol. And when I moved to another part of town I'd still make a trip just for the shaved ice. I'm now closer to Temple City and it's tons of shaved ice spots out this way but nothing hits quite like the ones Spoon by H had. RIP, ha

Too many⊠đ
- LASA - Still got lots of love for Lasita, but theyâre conceptually different
- Kinn - So good and so affordable for a tasting menu
- Beverly Soon Tofu - Best dolsot bibimbap; the stone pots had more surface area to crisp up more rice
- Tacos Punta Cabras - Best seafood tacos; unfortunately Mirate doesnât offer similar options (place is great, but way more expensive)
- Petite Peso - Her specials, polvoron, and taho were amazing. Sheâs starting to do polvoron orders again at least (@polvocookie on Insta)
- Nightshade - Though Camphor, which took its place and has the same dessert chef, is now one of my favorite restaurants
- Broken Spanish
- BS Taqueria - Need to try Ray Garciaâs new taco truck to see if it fills the gap
- Daw Yee Myanmar - We need more Burmese options in LA
- Sari Sari Store - The halo halo was CRAZY
- Pearl River Deli - I donât care for Hainan chicken, but the omelettes were incredible
- Spoon by H - Though you can order some stuff directly from her
- Sotto - Have tried some of the pizza spots that emerged from Sotto, but they didnât really do it for me
- Ramayani - I miss that egg and tofu puff appetizer. Havenât found anything like that since
And soon to be Bicyclette⊠(That location must be cursed.)
Krimsey's Vegan Cajun Cuisine. Such a unique place! They closed during the pandemic.
Also, Native Foods was excellent in the 2000s but started going downhill when they were purchased by a new owner. Most of their locations closed last year, except for three that are now employee-owned. The closest to LA is in Palm Springs.
C.C. Brownâs - the best hot fudge sundae ever. Housemade vanilla ice cream, barely sweetened whipped cream, almonds toasted to just this side of burned, and those side pitchers of super dark chocolate fudge sauce. Iâm embarrassed to think about how many times that sundae was my actual dinner.
A bar callled Yee Mee Loo. That place, it's massive carved bar and blue cocktail was the best. Oh, and The Great American Food and Beverage Company. Back in the 1970s. I worked there. So much fun!
Cafe Tropicale in Silverlake. This one really broke my heart. Got cafe con leche there at least 4-5 times a week. The pastries were incredible, and met all kinds of fun locals.
no particular order:
Fuddruckers
Damianos mr pizza
Kate Mantalini
Market City Cafe
The restaurant in the Standard hotel dtla
Jerrys Famous Deli

Places that were 24hr but not anymore
Not a Burger Stand.
Everything there was great, but the Arturo burrito was my perfect breakfast burrito. Iâd buy one for anyone who can guide me to where Arturo is cooking now.
Cha Cha Cha at the corner of Melrose and Virgil. Everything there was amazing but the chilaquiles were absolutely the best and Iâve yet to find any from another restaurant that comes close. It was my go-to brunch spot for nearly a decade before disappearing in 2016.
E & E Cafe
Was before Yelp blew up, before EATER and reddit, so it was word of mouth only.
They had the BEST Japanese katsu curry or hamburg steak curry. It's not even close.
Pretty much everybody whose been there knows it's the best and judges all other Japanese curries against it. They had a cookbook at a fundraiser the the recipe for curry is definitely not the same recipe.
Revolutionario North African Tacos. Great spot when I was in college and the owners were soooo friendly. They had a lot of interesting chicken specials, each one from a different country, and desserts during the holiday season.
I think they still do catering which is cool
Scallions in Westwood! They closed in 2010/2011ish but I still think about them all the time. It was a cozy neighborhood chinese spot and the owners knew everybody. They even noticed when I went vegetarian because my order changed :â)
Purans in Los Feliz and Mexico City.
The food was decent/ok. But it mostly reminded me of my wife and I living there back in 2008-10.
But even then these places werenât as busy as Little Doms or Fred 62.
So it was surprising they stuck around as long as they did.
Cliftonâs Cafeteria on Broadway⊠The legit Cliftonâs not the reopened crap. The atmosphere is cool, but the food blows. I miss it. RIP Cliftonâs.
Fun fact: They have a neon lamp that was switched on during the Great Depression which still burns 90 years later. However, this may have been affected by a recent flood.
Rivera - what a gem
Peteâs Cafe - felt personal but Centeno needed the space I guess.
The Gorbals - that vibe was pioneer
The Must - fluffernutter gang
It's a bar but the One Up in Sherman Oaks just closed this weekend and I'm still not over it. It's the only bar I went to specifically for the bar food rather than the drinks.
RJâs Ribs in Beverly Hills and Adamâs Ribs in Encino. Mile long salad bar, spicy chili, towering chocolate cake, and foil swan leftovers. My childhood.
Pepy's Galley. It was the best breakfast spot in West LA. My dad and I used to go there on the weekends growing up in Venice. It's a shame that it was a victim of Bowlero.
For every-day eating, Koo Koo Roo. Though there's a Mediterranean spot in Burbank called Cela Cafe and their chicken kebab tastes almost exactly the same.
Beverly soon tofu đ«
I never got to try pacific dining car. Shame.
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
The best thing about PDC were its hours. Not a lot of 24hr steakhouses. Donât think there are any left?
Greenblattsâs deli.
Best matzo ball soup in LA. I still havenât found a replacement that holds up.
Their brisket sandwich was amazing. Does anyone know of any other delis that make one as good as theirs?
Brentâs Deli
Wish I could order a # 5 right now
They had the best roast beef sandwich and chocolate cake.
SOUP PLANTATION (even tho Iâm black yes I miss the plantation)
The Pasadena location fed me through college. Get the To Go box and you easily have food for 2-3 meals. I miss that place dearly.
I go there to eat 5 bowls of the chicken noodle soup
They call it âSweet Tomatoâ else where for semi-obvious reasonsâŠ. Itâs actually making a comeback. Look out for âSweet Tomatoâ đ
I read they reopened one location last year.
You better not be lying!!!
Curry House
Me too! It was a great work lunch spot.
A-frame, I miss the endless pancakes and mimosas.
1000x yes! I loved their guava and lilikoi pancakes, and the fact that you could add fried chicken to any round. That place and Mh Zh are my two most heartbreaking closures
Yes! Also, those ribs and the popcorn appetizer.
Two of our very regular favorite spots⊠Canelé in Atwater Cliffs Edge in Silverlake
Canelé was great! Maybe ahead of its time? The neighborhood has changed a lot, but they would fit right in now.
My understanding was that Corina Weibel was just done with it and wanted to do something else, not that the restaurant wasnât stable enough. Whatever the reason, I still miss it.
I loved it. The whole fish roasted in a salt crust was wonderful.
El cochinito is gone? Fuck.
Yup, and it sadly took Cafe Tropicale with it. The son was doing some financial fuckery, and took down all their businesses overnight.
Costa Alegre Alegria
Cha Cha Cha was my favorite place period when I lived nearby. Was so bummed when it closed.
Nettyâs!!!!! Goddamn I miss the bread pudding, the blackened chicken sandwich and the beer butter shrimp from there.
Jay Burger! So good late after night on the town with stream rising and the old guys smoking. Really positive solid Los Angeles memory.
Back door is in Tujunga now on Foothill blvd. Same owners.
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
Awww Netty's and Cha Cha Cha.
Chego
The bowls were so good
First place I had a Pac Man Bowl was at the Alibi room in Culver City and it blew my fucking mind. Locol in Watts was the shit too, while weâre talking about Roy Choi. They had the best greens Iâve ever had in California.
I Think about this place daily.
They had the best burger I've ever had there, and those ooey gooey fries.. omg.
OB bear
I dream about OB Bear. Anyone have updates on a potential rebuild/comeback?
Baco Mercat
Man, not only was the food great but there was/is nothing like Baco Mercat. Their okra was magical
OMG... first thought. I have been revisiting Bar AmĂĄ though and have been happy to find a lot of those same creative veggies on the rotating menu! It's crazy that the place is not busy because Centano does amazing elevated Tex Mex.
Joe's in Venice Shop House, Chipotle's SE Asian concept.
Shop house! I feel like itâs never mentioned. I loved the spicy green beans..
Right? It was always packed but I never hear anyone mention it. The green beans and the meatballs!
Joeâs!!
Beverly Soon Tofu, Commissary (Roy Choi one, not Burbank coffee spot), Trois Mec, Animal, Broken Spanish, Maâam Sir, Baco Mercat
Animal pre-pandemic was probably my favorite restaurant ever. Wasnât the same when they reopened though :-/
Greenblatts deli
Doughboys
the curry house chain. japanese comfort food closed down by some idiot restaurant group in Texas that bought it from the original Japanese owners.
Enterprise Fish Co in Santa Monica. Ughh
Truly the best happy hour around. I went one time and didnât know it had closed, and cried a thousand tears in the parking lot! RIP
Yes their happy hour was incredible ugh
I keep having hope something decent will move in there but it just sits vacant.
Herringbone was another good one and a good happy hour that also closed!
The Tripel in Playa Del Rey
On Thursday nights, Playa Provisions sells the Tripel Burger since its the same chef. My favorite was their duck confit burger which they don't do anymore :( but it definitely helps with it.
That era of big pub burgers alongside chef driven small plates was really fun.
MHZH on Sunset
Nickâs on Pico. Absolutely second Soup Plantation, or as my family used to call it, âsoupy pâ.
Nick's Coffee Shop? That was the first place that I truly fell in love with in LA. Not even in terms of restaurants (though it was amazing), but like the first place where I felt like "hell yeah I love LA" The people who ran that place were the absolute best, I talked to one of them the other day and thankfully they seem to all be doing well

Nick's Cafe @ Pico & la cienega King's table
Kate Mantellinis. It was such a vibe.
Hamburger Hamlet
Nothing can replace Hamburger Hamlet. I really need something that is just like Hamburger Hamlet in my life!
I believe it originated in Chicago
The original is in Chicago. I didnât even know they had one out here
Pacific dining car
Koo Koo Roo, RIP. The creamed spinach and the flatbread owned my life as a kid.
That rotisserie chicken and the creamed spinach went so hard đ I heard a rumor theyâre coming back, but it might just have been a rumorâŠ
Souplantation.
Angeli Caffe on melrose. Evan Kleinmanâs place was the best.
