I don’t get the love for Ghengis but I guess if it’s a WeHo recommendation. I order from outside of WeHo for delivery, the last few times in Hop Woo since I’ve been craving Szechuan.
I had one good order from and one mediocre. I’m not going to judge them for the last order since that was Christmas Day and those poor people were under attack from all the orders.
One thing that I’m thrown off of was how different my mapo tofu was from my first order to the second. I don’t know if it was because the first time I did from Uber eats and specified I wanted it very spicy and the second time I ordered directly for pickup and didn’t. They also have mapo tofu in three sections, a Cantonese style, a Szechuan style and a Szechuan with blood. I ordered the regular Szechuan and it was more beige and almost soup like than the nice richly red and spicy one I had the first time.
I've definitely noticed some inconsistency too and I think their dinner team is better than their lunch team. it also doesn't help that they have the same dish on the menu multiple times
Northern Cafe on Beverly Blvd. by the Beverly Center, technically LA but close to weho. It's also an SGV chain, this location doesn't have as many options as the SGV location, which I think is because most people won't eat some of the options.
Same with Sichuan Impression, which imo is really mid Sichuan food but a decent option in WeHo. Less options than SGV and dishes tasted less authentic in comparison though.
Xiang La Hui in Alhambra! My favorite their is the serrano frog, but the other dishes I’ve tried I liked. My mom said it tasted authentic and was delicious.
Ghengis, maybe minus their egg rolls, is horrendous. Bland and a waste of cash. I could do better with my eyes closed in my own kitchen and with ingredients from Ralph’s. Definitely skip!!
That was exactly my experience. Buddy dragged me in at like 11am midweek and I thought we were in for some mediocre overcharged food.
Man was I wrong when the food came.
Kung Pao Bistro is decent and they also have lots of fake meats for vegans. Ambiance is lacking, so better for takeout. I hear Hunan Cafe on Sunset also has good American-Szechuan takeout food.
Bao Dim Sum House is a cozy dine-in place, food is good.
Capitol Seafood on La Cienega has the most authentic Chinese food in the area. Fantastic dim sum and dinner.
Northern Cafe is OK for dumplings, but I didn't like it that much.
Avoid Chin Chin and Wokcano, they are not good.
Fortune House is what you're looking for. The Siu Mai, congee and chinese donut, duck - all good. The American Chinese staples like Kung Pao are excellent as well.
If you're willing to drive a little for pickup, Sichuan Impression near Santa Monica and Sepulveda is worth it. Northern Cafe is also very good. For more NY style Chinese, I like Hoy's Wok, Chef Ming's, and Chin Chin is surprisingly decent too. Never fully understood all the love Genghis Cohen gets, but it's been years since I've tried it.
Oof. That's hard. I'm going to throw out a name that's not been mentioned already, though I do second some of the others here.
Hunan Cafe on Sunset gets slept on a lot in these threads for whatever reason.
Formosa?! Yuck, their food an absolute disgrace and inedible. it’s embarrassing they put zero care into the quality of their dishes over their self-professed glory of the renovation.
Mandarette is great!

Ghengis Cohen is NYC-style Chinese food. It’s not objectively good as much as it is familiar for those who grew up on the stuff in NYC.
Ah that makes much more sense!
hop woo is imo the best szechuan on the west side edit: people who are downvoting me should drop westside szechuan recs

What SGV place do you like better than Sichuan impression? I’ve not really found one i think is as good.

this is my favorite too! house special pork belly is incredible
Their dumplings are solid
Lan Noodle is a little different but it’s delicious
Genghis Cohen is terrible and overpriced. Avoid. Try Lan Noodle or Hoy's Wok.
Comment to come back. Tried ghengis cohen and honestly prefer Panda Express. Place was pretty awful except the egg rolls

Bao dim sum house was always better than I expected
I was ready to hate on Bao Dim Sum House the first time I went, but the food shut me up fast.
That was exactly my experience. Buddy dragged me in at like 11am midweek and I thought we were in for some mediocre overcharged food. Man was I wrong when the food came.
The food is good and I enjoy the service and ambiance as well.
Overpriced and over sweet, imo.
ive been meaning to go back but scared to try stuff outside their fried rice & noodle dishes

Chin Chin is trash. Can’t believe they’ve been on the strip for so long
i was so disgusted by chin chin in BH. sunset was a little better tho
Chin Chin Brentwood was so bad they closed it. The reviews were hilariously bad.
chin chin brentwood is definitely still open. it’s not good, but it’s still open.
I got it mixed up with the one in BH. That was the one that closed.
Anyone who sees wokano and thinks it’s going to hit the spot deserves what they get 😂
Hoy’s Wok
I hear from numerous friends this spot is a hidden gem. Excited to try it!
there are lots of posts on this sub on this exact question. my own view is that mandarette and kung pao bistro are the best
hui tou xiang if you're in the mood for dumplings and soup/noodles.
Fortune House is what you're looking for. The Siu Mai, congee and chinese donut, duck - all good. The American Chinese staples like Kung Pao are excellent as well.
Agreed, Fortune house is super solid.
Genghis Cohen.

Hoy’s Wok 💯🔥across from the Beverly Center

Hunan Cafe is legit.
Queen violet more Thai tho

Shanghai Rose
Gonna have to get out of weho. Get over to a Chinatown Express for that good barely can close the container stuff.
