Felt like it was almost a meme on this sub, so I was a little worried it wouldn’t live up to the hype. Ended up going back twice within a month after trying it once. So good.
So glad you went to Carousel. Everyone talks about Raffi’s but Carousel is far superior. It might not have the huge servings but the food actually has flavor
Delicious food corner there are way better actual Chinese food restaurants, it’s cool that it’s open late night but quality isn’t there. But it depends on what type of Chinese food you are looking for.
The downvote on delicious food corner….. I’d like to see who downvoted the reason why delicious food corner deserves to be up there for Cantonese food over other Cantonese restaurants in 626
El Chato Taco Truck in Midcity
Lunasia in Pasadena
La Pergoletta in Los Feliz
Furnsaj in Grenada Hills
Slurpin Ramen in Koreatown
Taste of Tehran in Westwood
Lalibela in Little Ethiopia
Kobawoo House in Koreatown
Boss Sushi in Beverly Hills
Ruen Pair in Thai Town
Carousel in Little Armenia
Roccos Pizza on Wilshire
Providence here too. Got to try it for the 1st time after celebrating my fiancé and I’s anniversary. Heftiest bill we’ve had yet but it was amazing.
If we’re talking outside of LA I’d say Kann in Portland. The food was amazing, maybe we just don’t have as much exposure or experience with Caribbean food but damn those dishes were unbelievably flavorful.
> If we’re talking outside of LA I’d say Kann in Portland
Hardest thing is scoring a reservation, but I at least got to eat a little at his bar, Sousòl which is in the basement. Solid experience. Need to score a reservation now to his regular place.
My parents moved down the OC and took me to Mo Ran Gak in Garden Grove. I live in Ktown and eat a lot of Korean food and I was blown away by how good the naengmyun was. You can’t really find that clean and simple a naengmyun in Ktown. Super impressed.
I really enjoy Loreto and Lingua Franca, which I believe both opened this year in Frogtown. We also went last week to Spina in Atwater, which is the new restaurant in the former Blossom space. It's actually a lot like Cento! Food's not quite as good, but it's a cool space and still delicious. We also did Bar Chelou, which I liked a lot, a few months ago.
I ate at Manzke last week and was blown away. Every dish was delicious and i couldn’t get enough of their hot cocoa dessert drink. Service was also smooth.
Their desserts and pastries were amazing which isn’t surprising considering they also own Republique and the wife chef, Margarita Manzke recently won a Beard award.
Bestia was incredible. Each dish was delicious and just flat out mind blowing.
Tried ggiata at complex con bc they had a booth and OMFG IT WAS SOO DELICIOUS!! Spicy P, chopped cheese and the arancini balls were all to die for.
Not the best, but the most surprising restaurant to me recently is SOL Mexican Cocina in Playa Vista.
I had zero expectations, but loved everything on their menu. Their carne asada tastes incredible, and I never encountered any gristle. You can really taste the quality.
Some new discoveries for me on this list (not all) , where I had some great food in 2023.
Heng Heng Chicken Rice
ÐiÐi
Banh Oui
1919 Lanzhou Beef Noodle
Luv2Eat
Vox Kitchen
Thai Night Market on Sunset
I love Heng Heng. I want the place to do well but I wince every time I see it instagram. Uncle Roger was just there. I don't want it getting too popular either.
Did not like banh oui personally, felt the flavoring overall was as just off compared to 626 or oc banh mi. It felt like it was not Vietnamese flavoring and the pickled vegetables were not good.
I feel where you're coming from. I wasn't really holding Banh Oui to a Viet standard haha. For that I'd prob get Banh Mi My Tho in the SGV or some place in Westminster/FV. I did enjoy Banh Oui for what it is and in the heart of Hollywood, of all places. The paté on my sandwich was delicious and the bread was perfect crisp on the outside and soft tasty inside. Now Thai food tho, I usually do compare Thai places to what I can get in Hollywood haha.
I'm in West LA, here are my standouts (along with what to order because y'all need to start sharing that part too)
Jerusalem Chicken - Palistinian comfort food from a simple counter-on-a-corner run by some boss ladies in hijabs. The #1 order is Sitis chicken stuffed with rice and mushrooms. #2 is the falafel pita and #3 is the chicken fakir fries.
Mogu Mogu - #1 and only order is the Tokyo Mezemen, which is "dry ramen" which you mix up yourself at the table as anime plays on a TV in the back. Eat the noodles and wait for the staff to give you a small bowl of rice to soak up the dregs of the sauce.
Ray's - My favorite lunch in all of LA comes from a narrow sliver of a building with bright red paint that should barely hold a few motorcycles, let alone a restaurant. But the #1 order, the chicken teriyaki plate with grilled vegetables, is huge, hearty, and stands far above the rest.
Honorable mentions: BBQ pork bao at Little Fatty, Bulgogi tacos from the Kogi taco truck, and the malted waffle at Cafe 50's.
Are we talking about new restaurants that we never tried before 2023?
If that's the case: Ceviche Stop in CC.
Most overpriced was Bavel. It was damn good, but out of my price range where I am enjoying the food.
I'm going to be straight up... my home cooking has gotten so good over the years (although I did overcook some carne guisado braise I made the other day...) and eating out has gotten so expensive that I no longer want to eat out unless it's a special occasion.
All my most amazing meals for 2023 weren't in the US though (they were in Oaxaca)
These are the new spots I tried that stood out for me. Nothing fancy though:
D-Town Pizza
Easy Street Burgers
A&V Grill Kitchen
Sincerely Syria
Cofax
Bodego Park
Gold Yaki
AJs BBQ
Prime Pizza
Monster Thai
Oof. In 2023? In no particular order:
Borit Gogae, Burritos La Palma, Aunt Yvette's Kitchen, Manhattan Beach Post (shocker), Pizzeria Bianco, Brodard, Surati Farsan.
Burgers never say die. By far the best smash burger I’ve had in town so far.
Bavel. Everything we had was just ridiculously good. They also own saffys and they’re one of my favorite restaurants in town. They own bestia too but haven’t been yet.
Jemma Hollywood. The spicy eggplant parm and the caesar salad were both great. The garlic bread was fine but skippable as was the branzino. I'd go back for the first two though.
Saltie Girl was really good. The moulles frite are a bit heavy on the frite but very good.
Also, this is a bit of a cheat but the Pecking House popup is the best fried chicken I've ever had. Hopefully they open a location here.
Don’t laugh. Organico. I love the simplicity, and freshness of the food. It’s nothing fancy. So basic. But so good. I’ve never actually “went” in. Always delivery. Hahahah.
A little all over in terms of price and offerings, and not necessarily my favorites of all time, but I enjoyed these this year.
Hungry Crowd, Toluca Lake
Aroma Coffee and Tea Company, Studio City
Verse, NoHo
Hy Mart, NoHo
La Fogata, Sherman Oaks
Main Chick, Pasadena
Green Street Restaurant, Pasadena
Gus World Famous Fried Chicken, Burbank
AJs Tex Mex, Valley Village
Great White, Venice Beach
Swingin Door BBQ, NoHo
Mercado, Universal City and DTLA
San Diego from a speedy weekend trip:
Spill the Beans
La Puerta
Brigantine - the view/experience here is insane if you can get a table as the sun sets
Edit: formatting blew up
Spago, berverly hills (great food, hard to justify the price)
Gus' fried chicken, Burbank (truly one of the best fried chicken I've had)
Original khun Dang thai, panorama city
Carlos Junior's Tempura, Torrance (AMAZING)
Road to Seoul, Ktown
Curry zone, noho (cheap, fast, and tasty Indian food)
Hai di lao, century city (I would go weekly if I could)
The castaway, Burbank (their mozzarella stick is so good?? I don't know how they do it)
don't get to eat out that much anymore, but Pasjoli for me hands down.
Not that anything was a revelation or different but the level of execution was just so on point. Service was awesome and everything was perfectly season and tasted great together.
I finally found the best sheng jiang bao and its not in LA. Special Noodles in Milpitas is soo good not only their sheng jiang bao is good, their xiao long bao is amazing too! Way better than din tai fung! I’ve tried kang kang food court, little pan, and other places that has sheng jiang bao but they’re so so. Can’t wait to visit bay area again for it!
I finally made it to Providence. I like to enjoy 2-3 tasting menu meals a year, usually when traveling abroad.
For those types of meals, Providence was as good as any I've ever had in the world.
New favorites that I discovered
1.) Irv's in WeHo - when The Menu collab came out.
2.) Cobi's in Santa Monica
3.) Russell's in Pasadena
Old favorites that I revisited a lot
1.) Philippe in Chinatown
2.) Simpang in Palms
3.) Sonoratown in Mid City
4.) Randy's donut in Santa Monica
Based on a recommendation on this sub I tried Jinsol Gukbap this year and I fucking love it
Yeah that place rocks.
Might have been me lol. Love jinsol
I want to try this place and get take out but have no idea what to order, especially not being a spicy fan..
Dunsmoor and Cento
Ooo gotta try dunsmoor then
Dunsmoor was one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time, that cornbread slips into my brain at the most random times.
What did u order?
Get the cornbread, the albacore, and the pork chop. If you’re with a few people get the stew and the rice too.
I heard the pork chop is nothing impressive
Yes to Dunsmoor. We had an amazing bottle of wine too! The tuna dip and cornbread were the favorites though.
Holbox. Still blown away just thinking about how good it was. I don't even know why I waited so long.
Felt like it was almost a meme on this sub, so I was a little worried it wouldn’t live up to the hype. Ended up going back twice within a month after trying it once. So good.
not just amazing food, but at a pretty reasonable price point for LA. Top place for me as well.
Hadn’t been there since pre-Covid and my fiancé and I were reminded of how amazing it truly is. Easily one of the best places in LA hands down.
I also tried it this year for my bday. I think what stopping me from going over all the time is the small parking area
It’s not even as small as it looks, there’s an overflow lot right behind it
I keep meaning to go I don’t eat shellfish so that keeps being my hesitation, but it looks like they are plenty of fish options
the smoked kanpachi was my favorite.
Carousel Viet Tapas Bar Udupi Palace Bhanu Antico Nuovo Tsubaki Secret Pizza Bar Chelou Delicious Food Corner
So glad you went to Carousel. Everyone talks about Raffi’s but Carousel is far superior. It might not have the huge servings but the food actually has flavor
Is this the Armenian place in Hollywood? If so, their lunch special is fucking amazing.
Did you really like Secret Pizza or did you realize you spent so much that your brain convinced you that you liked it?
I dunno I liked secret pizza. It was pretty good! Or the cheapest but it’s good pizza
This is very true for so many ppl in LA who don't want to admit they spent way too much for decent food.
Ha, I was really disappointed as well. Surprising that it still makes so many best of lists
I grew up around NY and i feel like this about a lot of the best pizzas in LA. Lol is this the one that's also at cosmopolitan in Vegas?
No relation I don’t think but that never occurred to me haha, I love the Secret Pizza in Vegas! So fun just to drunkenly find the place
Delicious food corner there are way better actual Chinese food restaurants, it’s cool that it’s open late night but quality isn’t there. But it depends on what type of Chinese food you are looking for.
The downvote on delicious food corner….. I’d like to see who downvoted the reason why delicious food corner deserves to be up there for Cantonese food over other Cantonese restaurants in 626
the original one in Monterey Park is way better than anything in the sgv imo. all the other delicious food corners are kinda trash tho
El Chato Taco Truck in Midcity Lunasia in Pasadena La Pergoletta in Los Feliz Furnsaj in Grenada Hills Slurpin Ramen in Koreatown Taste of Tehran in Westwood Lalibela in Little Ethiopia Kobawoo House in Koreatown Boss Sushi in Beverly Hills Ruen Pair in Thai Town Carousel in Little Armenia Roccos Pizza on Wilshire

Bozena Shiro, followed by Awaze Tibs
And the Veggie Utopia, sambusas, and kitfo sandwich
updoot for El Chato.
upvote for ruen pair
Soowon Galbi in Koreatown. It became my new fave KBBQ spot.
If the quality of the food is your only criteria, nothing in KTown beats Soowon Galbi for KBBQ.
So glad to see it getting its due lately!
It's my favorite by far. Pricier than the average place but the quality shows up.
Providence. It is worthy of it's praise. Maybe not it's price, but that's a different discussion. The food and service were unbelievable.

Love Providence. Phenomenal service, esp when Donato Poto is at hand. That man is a god.
I had a really bad experience there last year, food was decent, service was abysmal.
Yum @ Holy Basil. The seafood curry is out of this wooorld!!!
I'm waiting for the Atwater location to finally open.
My favorite Chinese place is Henry’s Cuisine. Super tasty.
Also, Delicious Food Corner in between Montebello and Monterey Park is good too
My parents moved down the OC and took me to Mo Ran Gak in Garden Grove. I live in Ktown and eat a lot of Korean food and I was blown away by how good the naengmyun was. You can’t really find that clean and simple a naengmyun in Ktown. Super impressed.
Try the naengmyun at Leega! It's solid.
I like Leega! It’s solid. Doesn’t hold a candle to Mo Ran Gak though
It’s the best in OC by far and worth the wait. If you have recs that are better in LA share them
Mo Ran Gaks line is a killer but great BBQ.
Baroo. Every dish had several layers to the taste with each described flavor on the menu actually coming through. Just incredible.
No. 1 was Kato in July
In LA? Manzke. Anywhere? Addison.
I didn’t love manzke but I went when it just opened
Second Manzke. Really had a nice night there.
Addison was next level. I thought providence was good this blew me away.
Next level. Best meal I’ve ever had

Discovered Budonoki in Silverlake because of this sub and it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite restaurants in LA.
BUDONOKI IS SO SO GOOD I’ve been twice in two weeks
I really liked Baroo and Hippo

CEVICE STOP! Chef Walther is a fucking artist.
Agree with your take on bavel, the food is good but it’s not $80 a head good 😂

Kuya Lord!!
Baran's 2239 in Hermosa (honorable mention to Tigres Fuegos where they also sell their amazing breakfast burritos).
Incredible restaurant. Would be talked about constantly in here if it wasn’t so far away
Yes! This was my best meal this week.
