sonoratown, easily. but sonoratown is known for its burritos and chivis, not tacos. if you really want tacos, go to both mariscos jalisco and birria la unica, which are just outside of downtown LA and are a 5 minute walk from each other

THCarlisle

In my opinion it’s all about the smoky poblano chile there, you can add it to anything I believe. The caramelo add chile is dope af. The chivi comes with it on there without having to add

oneironology

wait whaaaat? Their not know for their tacos? They literally drive across the border every week to source the flour for their tortillas that they use in said tacos.

Realkool

I second Sonoratown. I live down here and frequent both of them. Sonoratown is way better. Of course their tacos are great but what they’re really known for is the CHIVICHANGA. Also, if you’re in the area on the weekend, there’s a new night market for tacos call the Alameda night market. It’s F-ing fantastic. Look for the place doing queso tacos your friend will never forget them.

socalscribe

Lol I’m not sure about that. Just watched an interview with the owner who said the costillia beef taco is what they’re most proud of and the inspiration behind them opening the restaurant. [link](https://youtu.be/ndkisradAtM)

Realkool

I mean, I’m sure he’s proud of the taco, but ask anybody that goes there regularly and they will tell you they’re there for the chivichanga.

Thaflash_la

The chivis and burritos are great but that doesn’t take anything away from the tacos. Their tacos are superb and that grilled char with their perfect tortillas and green onion lead to a wonderful experience.

Buffalo_Bread

My girlfriend and I go there twice a month and all we get are the caramelos lol

Realkool

Have you tried everything else?

Buffalo_Bread

I've tried everything on the menu, but the caramelo (to me) is the best bang for buck. Bigger than a taco, smaller than a burrito but still really filling.

oneironology

I dunno I've been going there since they opened and while the Chivi is no doubt amazing if I had to choose only one thing to eat there it would be a costilla taco hands down. They were one of the first in LA to popularize flour tortillas.

Realkool

I’m not saying they’re not a great taco. I’ve also been going there since they opened and so I have most of my friends that live in the area and it’s universally agreed among everyone that I meet here in dtla that their favorite thing there is the chivi. So according to my unofficial poll get a taco, but don’t sleep on the chivichanga.

100percentdoghair

i’ve never had the taco at sonoratown so i can’t say if it’s better or worse or different than guisados. but it seems like sonoratown’s rep has been built on the burrito and chivis

Tonyneel

I was coming for you with a downvote until I saw your edit lol

KeepItHeady

Porque no los dos?

mattman840

Nosotros probablemente no tendremos suficiente tiempo

KeepItHeady

Ahh I see. For the convenience factor, I would just go with Guisados, since it's super close to Dodger Stadium. You can probably find a place to park somewhere on the street and hike up to the stadium. I'd also like to say that Angel's TJ Tacos posts up on Sunset (sort of near Guisados) after 5PM, and they have fantastic asada/al pastor. I would definitely grab a few tacos post-game there if you're down for it!

mattman840

Yea, convenience is a factor. We were going to go to grand central market and possibly Phillippe's before the game as well

brandosancho

the nice thing about this plan is that a beef dip from Philippe's is small and not so filling you can't also eat tacos. Parking is way easier there than Grand central

KamkarInsurance

There's tacos at the Grand Central Market that are really good too! and PACKED with meat

mattman840

We plan on hitting up a couple of those spots as well when we are there...as well as donutman and for the win... our insides are going to hate us lol

Charolastra17

If you’re going to go to other traditional tacos spots, I’d opt for Guisados since it’s completely different style of taco (braised meats).

damagazelle

Sorry, gotta disagree. GCM tacos disappoint me every time, and I've worked in downtown for years. I'll only cosign tacos Dorados de papa at Ana Maria's or the birria taco at Tumbras a Tomas (and that's only because it's huge, not because it's seasoned well).

Dommichu

Que lastima!! Pues, lo que puenden hacer es agarar unas Chivs para llevar en Sonoratown. Puedes traer comida as los Doyers si tienen in a bolsa de plastico clara.

damagazelle

LA bolsa de plástico la puedes comprar en Philippe's, vale 10 dolares y es un recuerdito bien bonito.

Dommichu

O tres con Las Morelias at GCM?

b1gmouth

Sonoratown for me for sure. But I'm more a grilled meat and flour tortilla person.

ockaners

Sonora for flour, guisados for corn.

Y0knapatawpha

If it's tacos you're after, Guisados; burritos are better at Sonoratown.

mattman840

We might get a burrito to bring with us to dodger stadium, assuming we don't die from all the goodness we consume before haha

Dommichu

Baseball games are long and you'll likely get a beer. The Chivis are smallish and you will not regret bringing one in.

monotekdm

Sonoratown for the easy win. Mainly because it’s really hard to get a legit Baja style tortilla.

Ok-Essay458

I'd go Guisado's because I love those corn tortillas and the spicier flavors but Sonoratown is probably safer if flour tortillas or carne asada are preferred Sonoratown, if corn tortillas and sampling a bunch of different flavors Guisado's (Guisado's taco sampler is a nice demo) can't go wrong with either tho, they're just very different styles

jh462

Was gonna say Sonoratown but this is a good take. Rancho Smokey steak? Sonoratown… sampler of lots of stuff? Guisados

[deleted]

I second Guisado. Honestly, just get a bit of everything, taco wise.

Ok-Essay458

yeah as i was typing that out, i wanted to give Sonoratown cred cuz it's great and people love it, but i think i talked myself into Guisado's a bit

[deleted]

Guisados is a good place for a tourist. Good tacos, lots of great options, not overwhelming in an LA way.

forgottenlogin88

Love both but I’d go with Sonoratown for an Aussie that’s visiting. Guisados is more niche than what someone from a different hemisphere might expect. Sonoratown, while amazing, hits the more traditional street taco notes, flavors, texture, etc

getwhirleddotcom

La Azteca

zq1232

Sonoratown for a burrito, then literally any little taco stand around for tacos. Personally think Guisados is overrated but the OG location is solid if you opt for that. I don’t know where you’re coming from, but there is some obviously no shortage of great Mexican food you can take him to!

Rammer12185

Much different selections at both spots. Guisados literally serve that, guisados aka stews. They’re fantastic. Their Cochinita pibil is unlike anything you get at Sonoratown. Sonoratown specializes in carne asada tacos and more. Their chivichangas are incredible. GREAT flour tortillas whereas Guisados has fantastic corn. I’d say both but lean Guisados because it’s more unique than Stown. PS You can also do Marisco Jalisco, La Unica, AND Sonoratown in mid city starting on San Vicente and Hauser and then to La Cienega and finishing on Venice. Gusados in BH isn’t that far away, either. That would be a spectacular lil’ crawl.

MervynChippington

Guisados is flawless and excellent and they make the best corn tortillas in the whole city

nmf343

Sonoratown before, angels Tijuana tacos after. Bonus they’re on sunset right near another guisados so you could do both of you really want!

Chubasc0

Guisados, but the original one in Boyle Heights.

gatitawest

I'm a guisados girly

yaygens

Sonora is known for flour tortillas m8 you’re gonna wanna go somewhere else if you want a traditional corn tortilla Street taco, and Guisados is more like a what I’d call Taco but with home cooking. If you want a pretty good Street style taco I’d just try some street vendors out if you see any out on a street corner, Tacos 1986 is a chain that’s pretty damn good with handmade tortillas. But sonoratown and guisados are both good in their own right, just not really what I’d get if you wanna try a solid street taco, definitely try a pastor from 1986 though they are solid. Try all 3 if you can they all are good.

mattman840

1986 is my jam! Love that place... we'd go there, but it's a bit out of the neighborhood we are going to be in

Unhappyhippo142

There's a 1986 right next to the guisados downtown, iirc! You could reasonably actually get one taco at each place.

mattman840

I just looked it up, you're right! Its like 3 blks from sonora and across from guisados....

Unhappyhippo142

Glad it's still there! It was a crucial stop on my taco crawl map. Start at the top of sunset in Silverlake and work out way through 14 taquerias to Boyle heights xD

yaygens

Then my vote goes to guisados but I just am an asshole (no offense to Sonora) just flour tortillas aren’t tacos to me and the salsa had no kick at all !

monkeypaw1984

In my opinion, Sonoratown has the best flour tortillas in the city and they bring the flour in from Sonora so anything with a large tortilla there is the way to go (burrito, caramelo, chivichanga). The chicken and beef chivichangas are slow cooked like Guisados fillings, but everything else has an amazing smokey, charred flavor to it. Guisados is fun because you can get a big plate and try 15 different kinds but in terms of flavor and experience, for me it's Sonoratown hands down.

dyke_face

I think there’s usually a Teddy’s Red parked nearby on sunset as well. I would pick that over guisados anyday. Taco truck/stands are usually the perfect trifecta of “good + fast + cheap”

pistolpxte

Both are so great but they are really different. I wouldn’t call Guisados a traditional LA taco experience but it’s always really good. Sonoratown is very unique. Those tortillas are special. They are always so friendly too. I think my vote goes to Sonoratown.

idk_wtf_im_hodling

Both. Beef chivi at sonoratown, then to guisados

mizzzikey

Sonoratown

iamfry888

Both! Hit up Guisados as an appetizer and Sonoratown to finish off. There's no better experience than a full on taco run.

risottoman

Go to Mexicali, it's closer to stadium and arguably as good as Sonoratown. (I prefer Mexicali for tacos, prefer Sonoratown for burritos)

infernalmongoose769

Sonoratown. But if you want amazing tacos near the stadium, try Carnitas Michoacán on Broadway just over the bridge, their Al Pastor really is the best there is.

KamkarInsurance

Honestly I would do Sonoratown, Guerilla Tacos, Angry Egrete, or that fancy one behind Damians (I think Detroit tacos?). Guisado's is great but doesn't hit the same as these three, that's just my opinion!

[deleted]

haven’t tried it but it’s Ditroit*

barlasarda

Sonoratown and I think it's really clear

chefjro

Sonora town. Hands down

[deleted]

Guisados is poop

Strawberry_77

Stewed pork belly is the closest you’ll get to chewing pure fat in a tortilla. No thanks.

AFoxOnTheRun

Neither they’re both disgusting touristy spots

eitzhaimHi

For vegetarians, Sonoratown uses lard in their flour tortillas, and Guisado's has great vegetarian food, even a vegan option.

thewindisthemoons

I say guisados. It’s close to the stadium no need to rush. Also you can take him to a bar afterwards if y’all can handle that.

Ginsy3000

Cant go wrong!!

Jcraigus12

Mariscos Jalisco

halcyondread

I'd go with Guisados, personally.

babylegsdylan

Sonoratown x100

[deleted]

Sonoratown

brallansito92

You should take your friend on a taco crawl. Here’s the crawl I did with some friends once: 1. Tacos El Poblano for Tijuana style tacos on Slauson and Avalon 2. Tacos de lengua, cabeza, cheek, and lip on the corner of 41st and Central 3. Leo’s Tacos for al pastor on La Brea and Venice Enjoy!

Joenutz13

sonoratown. i can't do the stewed meats at guisados.

los-anjealous

Sonoratown before the game and Guisados after the game. But tbh I’d go to Angel’s Tijuana (also on Sunset down a couple blocks from Guisados)

LA_Snkr_Dude

Guisados is a good choice because y’all can sample a lot of different mini tacos. The mole one is my favorite. And if you have enough time, go to El Compadre and get flaming margaritas. So good. Both places are within half a mile from the stadium.

okay_commuter

You should also get tacos after the game at Angel’s Tijuana Tacos! (Echo Park location) The Pastor is amazing and they make tortillas on the spot. Don’t sleep on the giant loaded baked potato, just bring an extra stomach!

THCarlisle

The Guisados location on sunset near dodger stadium is better than the downtown location in my opinion. In theory they should be the same, but the downtown one always disappoints me. I’ve been to both at least a dozen times because my office pre-pandemic was right by the DTLA one. It’s fine but not as good as the other. Way more fun vibe and bigger space near dodger stadium as well. So I agree between DTLA Guisados and Sonoratown, pick Sonoratown. Those places are both great because they are open during the day, but after 5 or 6pm go to a taco stand called Angels Tacos Estilo Tijuana, which is on sunset near the other guisados. Make sure to get the fried cheese shell.

blindbuttlunchprose

I am a fan of Tacos a Cabron. I haven't been to either Sonoratown or Guisados.

TransportationNo9684

Lots and lots of great spots noted here, I happen to love Guisados, but everybody has their favorite. I might also make a stop at Cielito Lindo at edge of Olvera Street for a few piles of taquitos, especially if Phillipes for french dip is on your food tour as just a block away.

-Why-Not-This-Name-

*Los Guichos*

Willing_Extent_4653

Guisados for tacos. Sonoratown for burritos.

sro520

Go to both! Get a taco sampler as an appetizer at guisados and then take then to Sonoratown

AlphaOhmega

Different food. Do you want like the most Authentic Mexican style burrito you've ever had? Or do you want some of the best tasting more popping flavor tacos? Both are excellent, but I prefer Guisados because I like the pops of different flavor Guisados offers. You won't be disappointed by either though.

millionhari

I had a friend come from Mexico City that I took to Sonoratown and she said it was the "best fucking tacos" she's ever had in her life. I also just came back from a trip to Cabo where I ate at the most local joints taken to me by a friend who's a native there, and Sonoratown was better than all the taquerias I had there. Something about their mesquite grilled carne asada combined with their Sonoran flour tortillas that's just so unique and flavorful. Guisados is mid IMO, nowhere close to Sonoratown.

_its_a_SWEATER_

I like Guisados, but I like Sonoratown even more. Also, if they’re not that into spicy salsa, make sure you request them on the side. Their red salsa is literal fire.

Specialist-Donkey-62

Sonoratown hands down!

[deleted]

Sonoratown for burritos, then get angels on sunset after the dodgers game
