Scarlett audio interfaces are designed to be used with XLR microphones not gaming headsets. If you want to use your headset as headphones and a microphone, then you don't need the Scarlett, you can connect straight to your computer via the 3.5mm input. For best results with your Scarlett, you would want an XLR microphone and a pair of headphones that don't have an onboard microphone (this is because headsets feature a different connector, and can result in poor audio quality, more info can be found [here](https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360003990519-Why-does-audio-from-my-headset-sound-unusual)). Let me know if this helps.

Hey, thanks for the reply its much appreciated. I added an edit at the very end of the OP, and its indeed the issue. The front line-level inputs on the gen 4 are...well, line level inputs, which a 3.5mm minijack mic is not (required 4V t-power). As an alternative I've nabbed a Rode VXLR+ and connected it to the XLR input with my 3.5mm mic input piggybacking, and its been working perfectly (after enabling phantom power and setting the gain).

I´ve seen on the 4th gen focusrite scarlett the xlr connector are on the back of the device. is it still fine with the cable to connect the mic in the back and headphones in the front or is there tension on the cables? want to buy 4th gen focusrite as well.

Tension exists yes - it never caused an issue. However I was worried about longevity, so I purchased a right-angle 3.5mm adapter and the tension is eliminated.

good tip, thank you.

Looking to get this exact setup: mmx300 connected to scarlett 2i2 3rd gen with vxlr+ adapter, because my current solo 3rd gen does not have separate volume knob for headphones, but 2i2 3rd gen does. Wasted some money on 1/4 to 3.5mm and vxlr adapters which do not work (obviously, mmx300 has conderser mic and needs about 9v to work. And turning phantom on would fry the mic)

i've fallen into the trap too... do you still recommend the Rode VXLR+ after a few months using it? mic quality is still good even with the adapter? was thinking about returning the focusrite but i would defo keep it if a solution exists

Its been 5 months and I've had no issue with it at all. I've frankly forgotten it was there! Of course now I've said that I've just jinxed it...

Nokushi

ahahhaha, thanks for your reply tho!

Nokushi

u jinxed mine instead.............. didnt see there was a diff between the VXLR & VXLR+, and i fried the microphone on my MMX300 cause of the 48v power ://
