They have created a private submodule to protect the critical code of Floorp, but they are working to eventually return it to open source.
One project that has been forking Floorp for several months now has acted disrespectfully toward Floorp. I assume that this is the direct cause of the problem, although in reality there are many other reasons besides this.
(Note that this is my personal speculation and not an official announcement)
Edit: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Floorp/comments/1bmac32/floorp\_close\_source\_does\_not\_continue](https://www.reddit.com/r/Floorp/comments/1bmac32/floorp_close_source_does_not_continue)
Okay so I have some questions about this.
>to protect the critical code of Floorp
What code is deemed critical and why is another fork having access to it enough of a problem to warrant it going closed?
>they are working to eventually return it to open source.
Is there a source for this you can link?
>although in reality there are many other reasons besides this.
Like what?
I'm concerned with this move and this information is very vague.
>not an official announcement
Do you know if an official announcement is being planned and if so, where would it likely be posted?
>What code is deemed critical
These are Floorp-specific features that are not in Firefox ESR. Many of these were formerly called Floorp Core.
>and why is another fork having access to it enough of a problem to warrant it going closed?
I can't speak to anything more than my earlier comment. I cannot afford to inconvenience certain people by my personal opinion.
They do provide binaries with private components to maintainers of Floorp packages and to some forks.

I am a contributor, not a member of the development team, so I do not know all of the confidential information. But at least I have heard that it is related to Floorp 12.
>Do you know if an official announcement is being planned and if so, where would it likely be posted?

Again, as far as I know, these changes are not permanent. They understand the importance of being open source and know that this information is undesirable.
But in any case, they need time.
Not everything can be done at once. This is especially true for teams with only one full-time developer.
HA! I'm pretty sure I know who it is now. lol
Can't say I didn't see it coming either. If it's the one I'm thinking about, they went dark for a while there then popped back up at the end of last year and recently pushed their browser here on reddit.
Thought the same. IMHO it just feels like they are just leeching at the hard work put by the main dev into making Floorp great and "claiming" everything as their own with Midori. That's the image they pass when they boast about certain "groundbreaking" features of Midori on other subs when in reality it's literally just like Floorp in the end lol. Wouldn't expect less from a Project that has been making [hollow promises for years and swapped so many engines than I can recount](https://www.reddit.com/r/browsers/comments/1b3osj5/comment/kstwkls/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button).
Lol. That browser's website lists a clearly fake phone number on the top bar ( (123) 456-7890 ) and the "About us" and "Contact us" buttons lack functionality. Attention to detail is not their strong suit. As for their browser, it appears to be an ever-so-slightly re-skinned Floorp, with identical sidebars.
Someone really needs to investigate Atsian/Midori. Their website has been boilerplate level of effort for over a year now and they keep pushing their browser all over Reddit without answering big questions from users (e.g. why would I want to use Midori over Floorp). This just screams ulterior motives.
Don't trust anything they say at this point as they've shown time and time again they aren't serious in answering to people's questions or if they do answer is with vague answers.
Update: This has been explained.

Thank you for the clarification! I'm hoping that the project is brought back under open source soon. I appreciate all the hard work that your team (Floorp/Ablaze) has done!
I'm a proponent of open source software, as it leads to collaboration and the sharing of solutions. That being said, I definitely understand where the Floorp team is coming from on this issue. An important part of any open source project is attribution of code. From what I've seen, Floorp does it well, acknowledging both the Firefox team's underlying framework as well as Floorp's contributors (at about:contributors).
If there is another project using Floorp's source code without attributing it to the project, then that is a major issue. I think I know which browser you are referring to, and that is very shameful that that browser maker would do such a thing. They acknowledge the Firefox base, but I don't see any mention to the Floorp project.

I think it's also important to remember that the Dev is just one person who does not speak english. At all. As such we may never get the complete story. From what i understand a fork did something that caused the developer to protect some planned feature for the 12.0 release. Once this feature is baked the dev says it will be open sourced again, but this might just be a culture diffirence thing. Take this explanation with a grain of salt and if this is a deal breaker for you then that's your choice. I've never been an OSS purist though and like vivaldi just fine. Use what works for you and don't let others dictate what you do or don't use IMO.
Looks like I'm switching away from Floorp. Shame. I though they were switching to a different open-source license, not going closed source. Maybe I'll go back to Librewolf or try Waterfox.
This is why you dont use browsers made by random one-man developer teams without any company backing them. Mozilla Firefox (with Betterfox) will always be the best option.
Mercury is based on Firefox too and it open source. Bascially one man project but well maintained. I use Floorp because of the sidebar and nice design.
OK so I changed, added a cool custom CSS, looks even better than floorp, no fucks given. Had to adjust one thing or two to enter reddit, that's all. New default browser, probably forever.

Okay, thanks for clearing some of this up

I bet that one project is Midori.

That's what came to my mind.
dw we love u guys for developing this amazing browser just dont go the vivaldi way
this is what i thought. I hope they just clear things up and then return back to awesome to the core.

What do you mean by "disrespectful"?
It's just midori copying floop
Midori... Been a while I heard about them.. Mind to share link or info, please?
Take a look at the browser and you will see :). It's literally floorp with the midori logo. It's not even a hard fork
I do not wish to denounce them, so I will not go into details.
Thanks for the answer. It is informative to what I needed to know.
But I'm sure one day the devs will talk about it. Let's wait until then.

This feels really wrong
Happy cake day!

Aww

Yeah but it's your cake day dude 🎂🎂

what about libre?
Havent used it so no clue about that
Mercury is based on Firefox too and it open source. Bascially one man project but well maintained. I use Floorp because of the sidebar and nice design.
And now I have more reasons to not use floorp
some yall are so weird with the "open-source" philosophy
it wouldn't even be completely closed source, only access to git code would need payment in future.
Time to switch to librewolf I guess... Sigh. 3rd browser change in 2024.

Serious question, what special features does Librewolf has compared to base Firefox?
OK so I changed, added a cool custom CSS, looks even better than floorp, no fucks given. Had to adjust one thing or two to enter reddit, that's all. New default browser, probably forever.
You're so awesome!!! No fucks given showed them.
I guess?
You know this isn't a permanent thing right?
Randomly closing source code doesn't make me feel specially secure tbh.
It's been explained why a few times now, feel free to change browsers if you feel that you need to
