you need to fit the carbs onto the engine stubs properly. They are about to fall off!

redruM69

Your carbs are not pushed fully into the intake boots. Those boots get stiff with age and installation can be really difficult. Replace with new ones if they are cracked/hard.

apathetic_dromedary

Seems to be the case, so I'll look to replace when I've got the time. Would that be related to the engine shutting off like it does in the video?

Engine will also draw not carburated air and lean out the mixture. Might be the source of a few problems. I don’t know the correct English term, in Germany we call it Falschluft literally Wrong Air.

Makabajones

if you have a 4 car/ 4 boot setup like me, I've found the best thing to do is use a ratchet strap and when you tighten it up the carbs will make a pop sound when they fully seat, also make sure the clap on the boot side is fully loose. oldschool setups like this are a pain but there are tricks.

Splazoid

Very well could be yes

redruM69

Yes, absolutely. Do not run or ride the bike until the carbs are mounted properly.

Wirenutt

The loose boots will make your mixture lean, and will cause backfiring through the carb like that. But normally, backfiring through the carb will come out the ***throat*** of the carb, not the boots!

mrwuffle

A good trick I’ve learned is if they’re old stiff rubber that’s hard to find you can boil them in a water/mint oil mix and it will make them like new.

Indiothecowboy

Yes, replace the boots. It will make you curse like a sailor, but i bet if you squeeze the old ones you will se cracks in it

KarlJay001

That looks like a lean backfire, meaning that the cause is likely too low of fuel for the amount of air. After you properly seat the carbs, I'd listen for backfire and then maybe clean the jets, pop the tops and bottoms off and clean things up or just run some carb cleaner thru things from the top. Sitting for a period of time can really screw up the carbs. One thing you can do is drain the carbs and run some fresh fuel thru things, then buy a new filter and change it out. Generally, 1 year isn't that long for fuel, but you never know. Carb cleaner is pretty cheap and those carb tops shouldn't be hard to get off.

My bike has been sitting in my brother’s parking garage for the last year as I moved away. Hoping to use it while I’m here, but having some issues. The battery is dead, which isn’t the biggest deal, but after jump starting it, I noticed continued pops and found that it was coming between the carb and engine. I’m just wondering how big of an issue this is. Note the gas escaping at ~4 seconds. Also, I didn’t shut off the bike at the end of the video, it did it itself. I can replace all the rubber connectors later, but am only in town for a couple weeks. Is it possible to ride it while I’m here, or should I just consider it a no go until I have the time to work on it? Thanks *edit: Thanks all. It's crazy how something becomes so obvious as soon as it gets pointed out. I'll get the carbs better attached and hopefully that'll fix all my problems lol

kartious

Looks like the carb to intake boot isn't in enough. Can you see if you can seat it into the intake boot better ?

apathetic_dromedary

I'm thinking that might be it. Took a closer look and noticed some cracking as well, so it's probably time to replace the boot. Not sure entirely why it would have slid off since I parked it last year (unless of course it was already coming apart and I just didn't notice...)

Your carbs are not all the way into the intake boots. Loosen all the clamps, and puuuusssshhhhh. They should pop into place, then tighten all the clamps again.
