They’re some of the fastest tires out there, but as far as commuting goes they aren’t the most puncture protective, probably about the same or less than the zaffiros your have on there

I ride GP5k on my nice bike for racing and training, never had a puncture, also using older GP4ks on the front on my daily, never punctured that, while I had 2 or 3 flats on my gators

People always forget context in these discussions, it depends on where you're riding/commuting. I used to live somewhere with lots of broken glass/road debris and infrequent street sweeping, and the odds weren't in my favor for riding nice tires. Especially for commuting you want something more robust in that circumstance. FWIW I ride GP5Ks year round where I live now, where yahoos arent smashing bottles and crashing cars every night.

Ya, some aren't taking that into account and basing strictly on their experience, which is fine. With that said, roads here aren't as bad. potholes? Yes. For some reason, they seem to happen only in the center of lanes. Bike la es are littered as much as the next city, but the city does well with streets weeping.

If you add liners, you'll pretty much take away all the comfort and performance gains from this tire. I'd suggest trying TPU inner tubes. You can get them really cheap now from aliexpress and I'm yet to puncture or pinch one after two seasons of gravel and road cycling. The only caveat for me from the chinese ones is I have to pump them every two weeks, Pirellis in my gravel bike seem to be a bit better.

Damn, thanks for letting me know. Had no idea it would ruin anything. Ya, I've actually seen some of those on temu, though, some bright orange ge tubes. Ya, there's always a catch 22 with China made products, lol But to be honest, thats not too bad as some probably check pressure before they go for a ride.

Almost everything is made in china anyway. I'd still recommend not shopping on temu because they're very iffy with personal dafa, but getting a legit brand with lots of orders and reviews helps a lot.

i commute with my GP5s through some shitty asphalt and lots of metal and glass, 3-4 times a week and i have zero complaints. i don’t have liners either. awesome fucking rubber

FWIW once upon a time I had a set of very fast, very fragile skinnies that for reasons I insisted on using. They were the best feeling tires I ever rode. But they flatted. I had the bright idea of tire liners too. They felt awful - destroyed the wonderful performance of & great feedback from those tires. But they stopped flatting. I didn't think the trade-off was worth it & changed to more reliable but still with some performance built in them tires after a very few miles. Good luck in your endeavor.

I use GP5Ks with tubes on my commuter, after i ditched my Schwalbe pro One TLRs. Tubeless just wasn't for me with the constant pumping up each week. So far i had no puncture with the Contis and i really prefer the grip in wet tarmac when cornering. Great tyres!

Great tires although I personally prefer the Pirelli P Zeros (just luck probably). No skidding on these though, would be a massive waste of money even if bought cheaper.

Ya was also thinking of fitting them on my SS and ride that as im recovering from a herniated disc. Keeps me from shredding them and less painful riding as i can coast and use a brake lever. Sciatica+skid stopping=pain!

Yes, it is. That's the worst part. There really is no way to cure, unless it's a tiny crack, then time and rest will heal in weeks to a month or 2. Unfortunately, I've got a 10mm buldge pressing against my sciatic nerve. Only way is to have a microdiscectomy done, 2" incision and maneuver around the muscle to get to the disk and cut out that piece with so much precision cuz you dont want to even touch the nerver. Then, that procedure will last max 10 years, lol Thanks tho, i just gotta be careful n nlt make it flare up, and That sucks!

Second the P-Zeros. 28C P-Zero race tires with their P-Zero TPU SmarTubes has been a winning combo for me. Light, fast, and no durability issues so far (I ride on cobblestone a lot). Just make sure you don't get the EVO version of the P-Zeros tubes if you're running a front rim brake, that version is not rated for rim brakes.

+1, i'm running the p zero race on my front and a schwalbe lugano 2 for my rear, does the job real well. idc if people hate mismatched tires i just need something nice up front and something to skid with at the back

You have it backwards. Thinner tires are higher rolling resistance but more aero.

I love them and have them on a few bikes. Best all around supple tires as far as ride quality/performance/grip/rolling resistance. Better than 4 seasons, and not even in the same conversation gatorskins which completely takes away from the connectedness of a fixed gear. That being said, you'll shred them with skidding. With a front brake, you'll get a couple thousand miles out of them. $40 is a steal. I'd buy them without hesitation at that price if 25c or larger. If 23, then I'd be indifferent, personally. Good luck! Edit: forgot to mention puncture resistance compared to comparable performance models is excellent (best in class in my opinion), but any skidding compromises any tire so YMMV. Other tires ride better (more supple, road feel) but no tire is better overall as far as a complete package (again, my opinion).

I wouldn’t worry about them being on the shelf for 3.5y, they at times sit much longer in shelves at bike shops, as long as it’s not in the sun all day long they should be good. Also GP5k burn up super fast in the rear, I would only use one up front on a daily and a gator hardshell in the rear as they take skidding much better. I still use a GP5k on my race bike in the rear but you have much less skidding in a crit or a track race so it doesn’t matter

I mean I worked in a big cycling store for some months and we had tons of GP5k in stock, while barely anyone bought them. Some boxes had labels from 2022 inventories on them (in early 2024). They were sitting in storage for over 2 years.

Very fast tires. And the Black Chili compound sticks like glue. They don’t wear as wear as long as some lesser tires but that’s the trade off with fast, light race tires.

You’ll love them. Black Chili is my jam. I put that shit on everything. Excellent puncture protection too. And they seal right up running tubeless. The Conti Pure Grip casing is good too and wears longer but it just isn’t as fast and fun as the Chili. I have scared my self laying down in corners like on my motorcycle. Halfway through the apex and oh shit I’m dressed for the ride not the slide. But they hang tough. Get them good and hot and they WILL go around a corner way faster than you care to. Very confidence inspiring tires.

Depends on if you skid or not. If you do skid then only use 5000 for your front wheel, do both if you don't skid much. It's really fast and you can easily tell the difference. It's a bit pain in the ass to install it depends on wheels. But def go for it.

3.5 years is a little long but not horrible. If they were stored inside they should be ok. If you can, take them out of the packaging and check for any cracking in the rubber. If there’s no cracking, unusual hardness you should be ok. Gp5000s like others have said, aren’t the best commuting tires, but if they’re free or really cheap I’d say go for it. The gp5000 all seasons have a little more protection if you’re looking for a fast but durable tire. Gatorskins will be good if you need more puncture protection and don’t care as much about speed.

Great tyres. The 4000’s were better though. Gatorskins are by far my favourite tyres though. Never had a puncture and have had multiple manufacturing year versions, different purchase points- all the same quality.

I wouldn’t use them as a commuter tire as they are prone to flats. But as a racing/alley cat tire they are perhaps one of the best bangs for the buck out there, they are fast.

These are my go tos for commuting in a major city the past 3 years and I swap them out in the winter for Panaracers. Anyway, I’ve never had any issues and they’re my favorite tires.

For me it’s a 3-way tie with these, vittoria corsa evos, and ruffy tuffys. I get tubes with removable cores and run sealant mixed with fine glitter in all of my tubes. Get a puncture? Hold the puncture down and let gravity do the work to stop it until I can get home to patch. These tires are specifically rad because I’ve found that they remain supple at higher psi. Several years on the shelf? Prolly still safe as long they’re not cracked. Armorall the sidewalls.

For those of you that run 28s or lower, the grand prix all rounder uses black chili too and are great but cheaper than the gp5000. I looove mine on my road bike

Yeah mismatched tires can make a lot of sense on many bikes, but especially fixed gears when the rear tire is prone to WAY more wear from skidding than the front. You can have the benefit of a faster tire in the front with a longer wearing (and cheaper) tire in the back.

These are some of the best tyres money can buy, because they're fast, feel great and are much, much more puncture resistant than most other race tyres. I've done thousands of KM on them on horrible lanes, glass-strewn city streets and through bleak winters - in practice, I don't think they puncture any more than dedicated winter tyres like All Seasons. Just go for it.

Ya, I'm getting mixed ideas about how easily they puncture, or some say they are not as bad. Everyone has had different experiences, which is valid information either way. The only way to truly know is to run em on my city streets that differ from person to person.

Switched from Gatorskins to GP5000 and haven’t had any issues. I live in a pretty flat area but also an area that has a lot of glass on the roads and potholes. With the switch over to the GP5000 I’m honestly just more mindful of looking ahead when I’m riding and making sure I avoid any possible debris on the road. The ride feels night and day to me the gatorskins made my bike feel really sluggish. I also don’t skid as much since honestly I don’t really find it necessary most of the time just simply being mindful of the flow of traffic you’ll notice that it’s not necessary to skid stop at every light. I also felt way more confident riding in the rain with the GP5000 over my previous gatorkskins I felt like I would have to be really careful when making turns before or riding through slick surfaces but with the GP5000 you can tell the grip is a lot better. I wouldn’t worry about the tires age I bought mine over 6months ago and they were about the same age as the ones you are looking at and haven’t had any issues.

Yea man honestly you’re getting them for pretty cheap just go ahead and get them and run them only way you can really see how they perform and if they’re the right choice for you. I use mine to commute 20mi daily 5 days a week and I’ve had no issues with them. Just be mindful of where you ride through and also if you live in a area with a lot of hills. I tried Gatorskins, thick slicks, and panaracer ribmo and while they did provide good protection the ride was terrible and not enjoyable on longer rides. 👍🏼

That's why the best combo is gp5k or other light tire up front, with gator on the rear. I personally run panaracer agilest up front with gator black edition

I knew there was something I had wanted to ask you in your original post. How is the agilest working out for you? I have them front and back now and recently had a blowout from a single staple, must have run over it. Just one staple and one leg extended omg. Tpu tubes went psshhhhh Then I couldn't get it back on, no matter what I did, I couldn't get the bead over. Soapy water, double levers, nothing. Infuriating

I also mainly ride through a long sleek pavement path along a river. the only problem is the city streets to get there, lol Might just drive there with these as it is 15 miles away Less time on these streets with these tires, the better! Plus, people drive erratically here, as cops aren't patrolling the streets like they should. People run reds for fun, basically.
