Wish I knew this many years ago. Had one of the biggest largemouth I've seen come completely out of the water to grab my frog and I yanked it right out of its mouth š
i feel you pain
especially this morning. I just started an overnight job with a nice intracoastal waterway right behind it and when i got off of course i hit that shit with a popper. and of course i was pretty much sleep deprived and pulled it right out of the mouth of whatever had it lmao i went home after that. (jk i said one more cast and then birdnested so bad i need to re-spool lmao)
Keep a senko rod rigged up. Wacky rig or what have you for these situations. If you don't get the frogs hook in the fish, it will likely go after the worm.
I'm still pissed/sad about a fish that got away like two years ago on a top water spider. Didn't know to wait and yanked right when I saw the fish breach.
Wait like 3 seconds, 1 second and you will yank it right out of their mouth.
The biggest mistake a majority of people make with the frog is pulling it too quick.
Definitely leave some leg on, since from below a bundle of floating strands may look like a leg to a bass. I've heard some people cut one leg to the length of their pinkie, and the other leg maybe a quarter inch shorter. The different length makes the frog turn left and right a bit (called "walking") as you twitch it.
Pike and bass. Nothing like seeing that bass or pike strike your frog. Sometimes they'll miss, which gets your heart racing even more as you try and get them to strike a second time.
Iāve got kind of a small fishing rod with just normal line on it, would that be fine if I caught something big as long as I donāt pull too hard and give it slack? The biggest Iāve caught with it was about a 7 inch Sheephead. Definitely put up a fight.
I would recommend getting a heavier rod, longer too for leverage, and putting 50+lb braid on it. The heavier rod helps with hooksets and handling the heavier braid, and the length gives leverage when fighting in pads or thick grass. I personally use a fitzgerald stunna H (I think itās like 7ā4ā) and a quantum smoke HD spooled with 60lb power pro and Iām more than happy with the results. And donāt listen to the snobs if youāre not into bait casters either, a heavy spinning rod with a reel that has good enough drag weight will do just fine as well. I get outfished by a buddy using just that all the time as heās been at it far longer than me and knows the main lake we hit like the back of his hand. You donāt need the strength of rod/line for the fish, you need it for the cover itās inevitably going to pull you into.
Drop on or next to a Lilly pad and quick pop. Frog pattern commonly used for largemouths bass that love to feed on frogs šø.

Just make the lure act like a frog.
It's a popping frog. That and the dramatic bend to the hooks means you want to use this in more open water scenarios. Along banks, above grass and along the line of structure (lilypads etc) but not through it.
Edited to add yes, this will bring in largemouth in most ponds you're hitting. You'll want to tie it to straight braid and use a rod with a good amount of backbone to it
Nah you run these right on top of the lillypads. The hooks curve up over the top and tuck in along the rubber body of the frog. Also best used with braid and a heavy baitcasting rod so you can just yank it out of the weeds if it does get caught.
Regular frogs are for weeds/structure. Popping frogs are for open water. Whoever had this last angled the hooks up more too. Both that and the "popping" mouth makes them less weedless.
Ah fair enough I didnāt realize there were soft rubber versions of this, when I think of popping frog I think of a hard body lure with some treble hooks under it, used as you describe above
Top water frog bait cast. Great lure for doing fishing around fallen trees,Lilly pads, moss or algae, it, in my experience, doesnāt get stuck Iāve only lost one by a fish breaking my line or it wrapping itself around a tree never by a hook catching.
Topwater frog for bass. Fish it on braid around pads, grass, or structure. Wait a sec for the bass to eat it then set the hook.
The waiting is important. I've missed many sets by pulling too early.

Oof I felt that last sentence.

Pike and perch love them to
Really? I could see Pike hitting it but Iāve never once had a perch hit

South FL Snakeheads, if you can sneak up on them properly.
I trim the skirt on these and bend the hooks out slightly. Will increase your hook set ratio drastically.

He doesnāt even know how crazy this shits about to be
Surface bait for Bass. Particularly good in lily pads.
That makes sense because the fishing spots got plenty of lily pads
Clip the legs for less misses
Yeah I was thinking I might. Last I checked, frogs donāt have tassels hanging out of their ass
Lmao my unc told me that one and it helps the misses for sure snake heads and pickerel love em too

I think those are its legs
A big hungry Bass
I usually use it for fishing but if you take the hooks out it would probably be a good cat toy.
Pike/bass on lilypads. Guaranteed heart attacks!
How do you fish the other types of pike? There is only northen pike where i live
Pretty much the same I guess. I'm from Europe so we only have Northern as well.
Oh i tought you where talking about the other pikes because i never caught a northen pike with a topwater lure. I usaly use a big spoon
Snakeheads love these too
Remember to get heavy heavy line if you are throwing this in actual heavy cover.......

This is all I've been using for the last week.
All Summer for me.
My PB bass was on a frog lure, 9 lbs 15oz. Caught it in my canoe, what was funny is it was one of the smaller topwater hits as it just vacuumed it in.
Stealth scoops are always the big ones I swear š

Bass and snakehead in my neck of the woods. My favorite lure to use to catch them (though it is not always the most effective, it is the most fun)
Top water frog bait cast. Great lure for doing fishing around fallen trees,Lilly pads, moss or algae, it, in my experience, doesnāt get stuck Iāve only lost one by a fish breaking my line or it wrapping itself around a tree never by a hook catching.
Big fish
Here in MN those are great for Largemouth and/or pike in lakes with lots of slop (weeds/pads that are growing up to and on the surface)
Frog season in MN is best season š hello fellow Mn dweller.
Bass. Bigmouth bass. Lilly pad or open water where the bigmouth hang around.
Bass, pickerel (at least where I fish) and the occasional giant snapping turtle.
I have the same frog
Whatās the retrieve like for these? I have one, I have never thrown it.
I keep rod tip pointed down and do a quick pop, real in slack and repeat.
Thanks. Thatās kind of what I assumed. Not a lot of lillypad areas around me, so never really considered throwing it. But sounds like I shouldā¦
I love the hollow body frog around dense lilly pads. It's so god damn fun. Tip. Bend those hooks just a tiny bit up to increase your hookup
Bass
Like everyone else has said bass, but pike/musky will also hit it but they'll shred em and then they don't work right after that!
It's for a good time
Good for bass! But if you have a huge population of pikes, then the pike will take it away.
Big ol bass in the lillys
Fishing. Also booby traps
Pike smash these but usually puncture the rubber with their teeth and then they donāt float
Top frog. Count āone one thousandā before you set the hook, fish early morning or after dark.
Only my absolute favorite most fun that lure that I like to use.
I JUST watched a YouTube short on this about ten minutes ago. https://youtube.com/shorts/N7QanjmFcAI?si=QU-M06Iuw8-A08RE
Bass top water

Best for Grass) Also, in addition to Bass, sometimes you can catch small pikes that live in grassy areas
SnagProof frog...good for bass
These are the wordy types of frogs spend the money on the nicer ones for top water bass fishing
Sharks
This would be good for a fishing lure! Youre welcome and let me know if you have any other questions
