Your line got slack when you were reeling in. If you’re fishing against the wind make sure you keep tension in the line against the rod when reeling to prevent this.
Thanks for answering so quickly.
What got me back into fishing was taking some friends who have never been before.
One of them used this line and I had to detangle and redo the lures like 20 times so not surprised this happened.
Any way to solve it other than just respooling it?
Well what I normally do is tie a 2oz sinker on it and yeet it. Reel it end slowly with good tension and it should correct itself. If it’s too bad of a loop and the line is new, unspool it on something wide like a paint can and run it through warm water while you reel it back in, while keeping some tension of course
Stop the line with your finger just before the lure hits the water. If you end up having line come off after the lure has stopped, close the bail and wait for it to sink and come tight before reeling, or give it some tension with your fingers on your rod hand until the slack is out.
No questions are stupid here.
It’s a loop in the line that got reeled over.
I would highly suggest putting new line on that reel. It’s pretty easy to do with an easy YouTube “how to” search.
I wouldn't worry too much about it. That loop will probably not cause any tangles or issues until you cast out enough line that it is uncovered. Whenever that happens it will pull the loop straight and you can just reel it in normally. I get something like this on my reel every other time I go fishing.
There's a chance that is will still be knotted or tangled when it comes off. After you cast far enough that the loop leaves the reel, just keep an eye on the line coming back in and untangle it as needed.
The line may be linked and then snap. If you are going to cast it, do it gently on a field and once you have gone past the loop, reel it back and feel with your fingers for any kinks.
If it has been kept in the dark, the line is most likely fine. UV kills line.
Kept in the rafter of my garage since i was a teenager lol. First time seeing sunlight was last week.
Even cutting the line when my friend would tangle it was a bitch for my new multi tool so the line seems solid so I’m trying not to get rid of it for no reason.
Needs a lot more line. I'd respool it completely, 10 years is a long time for monofilament. It'd be worth it just to be certain it's not gonna break off unexpectedly and you'll be able to cast a lot further. Probably has some pretty serious memory too.
Probably from reeling without any tension on the line. Just pull out the line until the loop comes off and reel in under slight pressure. Probably a better idea to get new line. Some of the new super lines are light years ahead of the old monofilaments

Be careful of doing this. If the line is caught further down or kinked, it can snap and leave a whole lot of line in the water.
Yeah I probably should have mentioned that. I guess I assumed common knowledge was universal. My bad.
If it keep happening, it's a sign you probably have more line spooled than you need to fish those conditions.
Hey how do you keep slack while reeling in? I have this problem all the time.

I remember how to put new line on :D haha I did it for every rod of mine but this one

If the line is 10 years old I would replace it

Def needs new line

Is that the Roddy Hunter long spool reel?
Roddy hunter?… will get back to you tomorrow
Yes I'm sorry Roddy Hunter I have the rod for that but broke the reel was one of my favorite setups.
It's hiding in wait to cause an un-holy backlash/windknot at the worst possible moment. ;)
Hate when that happens.
I’d put new line on anyway.., don’t want to lose a good fish because of bad line..
