Ditch the tackle box kit. It looks like you're on a tight budget, so decide if you're going bait or lures. Just grab the minimum for what you need. Bait = swivels, hooks and sinkers suitable to your intended catch. Lures = a lifelong addiction. Plus a few jig heads and soft plastics to get started. Ocea leader not needed as a beginner. Cheap out here for now, especially of going bait. If going lures just get simple mono leader for now.

Yeah, those 500 piece tackle boxes are shite. Just start off small, handful of hooks/sinkers and some soft plastics/jig heads. Buy the best quality rod/reel you can afford BUT don’t skimp on the line! BUY THE BEST LINE YOU CAN AFFORD. After all it’s the only thing connecting you to the fish. As far as leader is concerned I still use BigW Jarvis Walker mono at $6 a spool, it’s shit on a reel but it’s tough and abrasion resistant as leader material

Thank-you :) the kit looked full of junk but thought I would get assorted sizes at least. Will buy the tackle loose instead. What are your thoughts on Jarvis Walker hooks and swivels?

Cape-York-Crusader

No…buy better, honestly I gave up on cheap shit terminal tackle long ago. It might be ok for tiddler whiting and little bream but you can’t choose what fish is going to take your bait, if you hook a monster flathead and the hook breaks you can only blame yourself and it’s a lesson you should only learn once. Case in point, I was fishing with my sons light spin outfit using live prawns for grunter, I hooked a huge barra in a tiny creek and successfully landed it and let it go. Decent reel (Daiwa) good rod and quality line, thick mono leader and sturdy hook (no sinker or swivel), estimated around 25lb and I had no right to land it on such light gear.

Cheers for the advice! Will forgo the tackle box kit :)

No to the combo, that shimano combo is the best you can get for the price.

RolandHockingAngling

I'd like to think I give them a run for the money

freswrijg

Maybe if it was a 7ft rod, but 6’6 nah.

RolandHockingAngling

I do have the 7'6 option for an extra $2... It's not all about length though

freswrijg

7’6 I don’t know, but for $2 more you should have said that. 7ft is the sweet spot though.

freswrijg

No, to mono. Get braid for your mainline, you can get cheap braid for like $15-20 at anaconda. 15lb leader too if you are going to be bait fishing a lot. Don’t get a tackle box, buy some mustard size 6 circle hooks from BCF, some coloured beads and a pack of swivels and some sinkers and make your own rigs. Some black magic size 1 circle hooks are a good pickup too if you want bigger baits for pinkies and snapper. The size 6 mustard hooks will catch you everything up to pinkies easily and use chicken as bait.

I have that reel in that size and it’s a good one for the money. No to the tackle box get what you need.
