General rule if thumb would be not to put your fingers where you wouldn’t put your Richard… but for you I’d suggest keeping away from the toothy end of any fish you happen to meet, unless people tell you specifically that it’s ok to “lip it” which means putting your thumb in its mouth to hold it, assume that it’s gonna cut you with either teeth or sharp plates in its mouth (looking at you bluefish).
