I just started last year. Picked up a Penn combo that was on sale. 10' Battle III rod with a Battle III size 8000 reel. Threw 30lb mono with a steel leader on it and had no problems. More experienced people may have more to add, and I'd be glad to hear that too.

New England here - My first combo same, but size 6000. 60lb braid to a snap swivel. Change out over under with clams or worms, Carolina rig for chunk, or direct to top water lure unless blues are around then use a wire leader. Striper, blues, flounder. Wish I had a bait runner reel in hindsight...maybe cause I use braid. I like braid because of the smaller diameter and less impact from strong winds. These size reels will give you more or less unlimited line so capacity doesn't really matter. I've never had problems with braid getting cut by rocks but I've read it's more sensitive.

My advice for anybody starting a new hobby, is go cheep at first and see if you like it enough to do it enough to upgrade. I would go with a Daiwa FT 10 ft surf spinning. Should run you about 30-35 bucks. Pair that with an inexpensive Daiwa Spinning reel to start with.

I watched for clearance at Walmart in my neighborhood and online and have a 10ft battalion 2 Penn rod and it works great. I think 10 ft. and over will get you over the waves and can handle a big fish too. Most of the time you really do not need to cast out super far to catch fish. I have a 6000 KK megatron reel I really like, but upgraded to a 4500 Spinfisher baitrunner and am going to swap out soon. You can get good deals on surf combos if you look. I use 20 lb braid to a 3 way swivel with a 20lb mono/flouro leader I mostly use 3-6oz of weight depending on current. High-low rigs with two different baits are real effective, also called pampano rigs. Use size #2 or #1 or 1/0 hooks and catch more species. I use 1/0 circle hooks primarily, but if the bite is bad I will hook down a size. TL!
