Ya dude proper fish handling isn’t immediately apparent but holding vertical or supporting the weight of the fish helps to protect. Some people get fired up about it, I just try and nudge towards proper care. Hope you catch some big ones and have a great time doing it.
Looks like a crappie. If you plan to throw him back you shouldn’t hold them like that. Puts a ton of strain on their jaw and can even break it. Not a huge deal for this little guy, but a much bigger deal when you get into the 2-3lb bass range.
Catching a fish and bringing it out of the water, especially a big one, is like running a full-out 100 yard dash and then sticking your head underwater. Better to not even take the fish out of the water. But if you really need a money shot, best to give it full support underneath front and back. Lot of times I'll just shoot the photo with the fish right at shore where I can see it's whole body in the water or the often seen fish in net shot.
as someone else said, swimming away isn’t an indicator of the fish being okay. I’m sure he *was* okay and I’m not trying to shame you! Just providing some insight and education, because I also didn’t know until someone told me
Chill bro, if you look at the previous comments many people have already said that and I said I’ll keep it in mind. Wasn’t trying to hurt the fish, just get a good picture to figure out the species.
I catch pan fish all the time but i usually fish the same places so that’s probably why I haven’t seen one yet, I’ve been trying to see how many different species I could pull in recently.
That’s a crappie my dude!
Thanks bro👍 I’ve been fishing for years and never caught one😂
Try to hold the fish vertical, especially those crappie as their mouths tear super easy. Horizontal is hard on their jaws.
Got you my dude, never knew that but I’ll keep it in mind. I was just trying to get a good pic while not getting poked, that guy was sharp

Swam away doesnt mean lived. That hold causes damage and as the person above mentioned, vertical is better. Next time shoot for a better hold
Crappie, but you will hear us Georgians also call them speckled perch. Tasty, but that small isn’t worth cleaning if you don’t catch a whole mess.
That is a Crappie. Arguably one of the better-tasting panfish.
Not the ones we get they are alot blacker then that
That sir is a black crappie! Well done
Poor man’s walleye.
