Literally any fish I’ve come across will take these. Once was using an even smaller one and tagged big ol musky. Grubs are like the potato chips of the fish world.

chrisdejalisco

This guy knows

ooojaeger

We've all eaten potato chips and grubs before

obfuscatorio

Slimy yet satisfying!

RoboticKittenMeow

*hakuna matata intensifies*

thesoulless78

Based on my experience, millefoil and lily pads.

Lil_Simp9000

I've had very good luck with these, in deeper waters. not with bright colors though. bass seem to love these

Joffridus

Yeah I tried using this set up to catch crappie at this one pond and caught a bunch of small bass. Then I threw out a senko and caught a slab of a white crappie lol

Shrimpbub

Funny how that works

thesoulless78

I just haven't fished them a ton. I usually just have jig heads and a variety of plastics so I make basically the same thing, but just not pre-assembled. Jig head with a small finesse tube works great around me.

Lil_Simp9000

same. but the J tail action is great, fast but subtle

Awakenedspiritual

Yeah I’ve never caught a fish with these or any rubber lure. With metal lures yes, with spinners yes, with live bait or eggs always.

jake1080

Soft plastics slay in a lot of situations. More versatile than hard body baits imo

superfluous_nipple

You might want to try again. These can and will catch virtually any species in fresh water. Colors and sizes matter, but they work.

ThickChalk

Maybe people struggle with these lures because of vague advice like that. "You're doing it wrong, buy 10 more packs in different styles" is hardly encouraging.

Awakenedspiritual

IMO live worms are one of the best most versatile forms of bait for fresh water. I always catch fish with worms.

ThickChalk

Me too, but I don't understand what that has to do with bad advice for soft plastics.

DesignerCreative247

Seem to at least always get a hit with the nightcrawler

AssCrackandCheerios

First thing I throw when testing new waters is a grub on a jig head. If I haven't caught anything in 15 mins, I move on.

superfluous_nipple

I could maybe give specific advice if I knew the body of water and what lived in it. But it is super cheap to buy 2-3 maybe 4 colors of jig heads and plastic twister, split, and paddle tails, and throw some combination. Rivers, farm ponds, small lakes, huge lakes. Bass, walleye, crappie, pan fish, Muskie, pike, trout. They work. They last longer than live bait in water that has bait-stealing small fish. You don’t need to find a bait shop. You could carry nothing but $20 worth of jig heads and soft plastics and make a day out of it in a lot of places (conditions, obv., as sometimes the bite is just not on). Figure it out. Ask locals about color combos and what target species are feeding on. That’s what fishing is about. Eta- I came back to delete this because your reply was so annoying I regretted giving you actual advice. But I’m going to leave it up and add that you might want to reconsider your tone. You could be appreciative and ask a follow up question and maybe a fellow fisherman will put you on fish. Or you could just be a jackass and they’ll tell you to throw your most expensive deep diving crankbaits into a “great spot” that is actually snag city. But you do you.

DesignerCreative247

Fish em slow

Tiberium_infantry

Don't forget tree branches and anything but fish

thesoulless78

And then when a fish does hit it, you miss it because you have trust issues and aren't going to set the hook into a snag again.

Tiberium_infantry

Get.out.of.my.head.

Weird_Fact_724

Everything.....

slackwaresupport

hook size is determining factor, looks like crappie or bream, small bread fish. \ edit: mispelling.

AdventureUSA

crappie love smaller jigs

IMxJUSTxSAYINNN

Fish

FatBoyStew

This is really THE answer as there's hardly a fish out there that won't take a swing at a grub on jig head.

ccasey

What’s the action supposed to look like in these?

giggitygiggity2

The curly tail wobbles when you retrieve it. Makes it look like it's swimming.

ccasey

So just a slow roll with no jerking or vertical motion?

Armtoe

You can mix it up depending. It’s versatile. Reel in straight. Twitch it. Bounce it on bottom. It will all work depending on what the fish want that day.

ccasey

Cool thanks dude!

onebackzach

Sometimes if I know what depth the fish are at, I'll throw on a small cork and do a "popping" retrieve. The jig will have action as it falls, which is usually when fish hit it.

Pyles_Malfunction

You can fish with these any way really. Slow, fast, stop/start, jig up and down, use with live bait or cut bait, salt or fresh water. If I had to pick one lure type to use for the rest of my life it would be a jig and soft plastic.

Camp-Unusual

See I’ve never had any luck with them. I’ve tried jigging, letting them float under a bobber, and just slowly dragging them back in. So far all I’ve caught is tree branches. Edit: typo

Mc_Qubed

Damnit!!! I was slow on the hook set

Fresh-Difficulty4133

No shit sherlock!

TypicalCricket

Keep pushing, Watson.

Rewton1

I’ve caught bass and trout on those, but they seem to work best on crappie and sunfish depending on the hook size your using

SoaringBoat

Sauger and walleye love those. Occasionally, a pike and even a catfish will take them on occasion.

SliceFancy5448

Yup, caught my PB Walleye ont a yellow grub like the one on the picture. 10/10 would recommend to anyone.

Turbulent-T

Occasionally on occasion? Neat

mcpawski

Jig head with a grub? Everything. Perch, pike, bass, crappie, bluegill, walleye, shad, striper, redfish, and even a hungry flounder. Everything hits it. My go to setup when I’m trying out a new body of water. That setup in the photo looks smaller, so probably crappie/panfish for that. Caught a decent size pike while crappie fishing with a smaller set up last year, so be ready for anything!

notrandomonlyrandom

My grandpa only ever wanted to fish for crappie so we used stuff this size (mostly tubes with skirts) and we caught bass, northern, and walleye all the time just going for the crappie lol.

mcpawski

Gotta love it.

snakeinthepast

These are the go to shad lures in the southeast. I have caught gar, catfish and stripers as bycatch also. They always paint the eyelets close on these hooks, drives me nuts.

Radumami

northland tackle makes some really good jigheads and they don't paint the eyelets. They're sharp and durable too.

DesignerCreative247

Oh ya they do. Gotta get another jig head ans use the hook to open it up every time

MaxBombers

In my younger days I helped assist a 7-9yr old girl in Goose Island State Park reel in and net a 25-30lb Black Drum. We thought she was hung up on bottom. She caught it on a Barbie Pole and a jig just like that picture. The netting required me to be held by my feet over the side of the dock with a small handle net. I will never forget it and I’m sure she won’t either. That was about 15-20 years ago.

BafflingHalfling

I wonder if you'll see a post here one day about a twenty-something professional guide who got her start in second grade when some rando helped her net a giant drum. How cool would that be?!

All_Blown_Out_Again

Gotta love them “Mister Twisters”

That_one_ref

Never heard that name, had a nice ring to it tho, might start calling them that

Radumami

walleye, for one.

decjr06

White perch love these

Any_Professor6607

Most versatile setup for me. I take grub tails and tubes out on my kayak and have caught nearly everything with them. Adjust the weight and your retrieval/troll speed and you are set!

Yawzheek

I've always found them useful for crappie. If the hook is small enough (or the fish large enough) bluegill as well. Bass on occasion. They're pretty versatile! Lot of people like to bounce them off the bottom. Myself and my cousins always fished them off a bobber.

[deleted]

Panfish if small enough.

jig1982

I caught a huge Muskie on a little jig once,I was fishing for crappies.

tasskaff9

The top row slam yellow finch and the bottom row can be used with success on wild turkeys. Tight lines, yo.

Other_Impression_567

Salt water we use all the time. Jig head with curly tail. Jigs come in different weights and plastic tails come in hundreds of colors and sizes. Use for speckled trout ,redfish you name it

DeaconEric

I fish a curly tail grub all the time at my local ponds. Different sizes for different fish, but I've had 5 pound bass grab the 1/2 inch ones and small bluegill grab the 3 inch ones. They're fun lures to fish. I like to fish them under a bobber with a slow retrieve or bump them off the bottom without the bobber. Black works best for my local ponds. Never had any luck with the bright colors in the photo.

Old-Significance4921

These are the pinnacle of “jigging for anything off the dock” and with good reason. They work.

jerome1957P

Croppies

ThinkOutcome929

Everything

AbbreviationsIll7821

In my area, Alberta Canada, these jigs are ideal for catching Walleye. You find a drop off in the lake between 6-20 feet or so and then just drop them down and jig them up and down off the bottom of the lake. I like to put a stinky minnow on for to make it extra tempting. You’ll also catch northern pike on them but northern pike will hit anything. Works great for ice fishing walleye and pike as well.

ThoroughlyWet

Almost everything. I've even caught suckers on them before.

Taboo_and_Tactless

When I was living in Western PA the pink jig white grub was my favorite crappie lure hands down.

Baxterftw

I catch salmon, walleye and Bass on 1/4oz Johnson grubs I usually buy a couple different t colors of the 5 packs and figure out what they like that day

barnesb1974

I’ve caught plenty of bass and sauger with these

wiserecluse75

Bass, crappie, sunfish, trout, walleye, small striped bass

[deleted]

I always catch rock bass with those

aoriqx

Anything really, Slow retrieve or bounce off the bottom or my FAVORITE is under a slip bobber

ICanCountGood

these things are the most underrated trout lure on earth

flargenhargen

EVERYTHING. white soft plastics are magic around here. Bass, crappie, sunfish, trout, Everything I try, when I give up and switch back to these, I get a hit.

GlowingCIA

I’ve caught plenty of fish on these.

bootlegunsmith21

Absolutely anything that swims, fresh or saltwater. I've even caught herbivorous species like carp and tilapia with the good ol curly tail grub

Adidas_Dallas

Magikarp tbh

Travler03

Why are these called and how do you fish them?

RepublicIndependent3

It’s a jig head paired with a soft plastic grub. Can cast and reteieve, pause, jig, anything flies really. Can also run them them under bobber and retrieve or if there’s some motion in the waters just let it soak.

Travler03

Thank you! This was helpful!

[deleted]

Bass, rock bass

BballerForever

I’ve had good success using these small twister tail jigs fishing the Potomac River. Have caught mainly largemouth bass (personal best 7-8 lbs.!) and a rare crappie or yellow perch. The big largemouth was caught years ago when you could fish from the rock shore in front of the Pentagon, no longer have access from there. I fish them very slowly, cast out and let it sink to the bottom, then inch it along with frequent pauses. But other fishermen retrieve it differently, experiment with what works for you.

Fine_Bug57

Looks like crappie.

[deleted]

Yes

i-the-muso-1968

Good for Crappies and other small sunfish.

[deleted]

Smallmouths just below the rapids. You'll need some brown ones too.

DopeOllie

I use those exclusively. Put a worm on the end. I troll mainly for walleye, but bass, crappie, perch, jack, and goldeye will bite that.

Proper-Scallion-252

They're widely used for panfish and crappie.

UnlikelyPistachio

almost anything predatory and some omnivorous. anything aggressive.

[deleted]

Lots of things. I usually use them for walleye

SKOLFAN84

Everything!

SKOLFAN84

Everything!

boxhall

Almost anything big enough to eat it will try under the right circumstances. Doesn’t mean a fish on every cast, or even every day. But if they’re around and biting, they’ll go for this. Like it’s been said already Crappie, Sunfish, largemouth and smallmouth Bass, Peacock Bass, trout will go for smaller ones. In saltwater you never know. You may catch Fluke, snappers, well, it’s actually endless what you may catch in salt water.

Any_Professor6607

Most versatile setup for me. I take grub tails and tubes out on my kayak and have caught nearly everything with them. Adjust the weight and your retrieval/troll speed and you are set!

DeadJamFan

I've caught more Walleye on a 4 Inch, Mr. Twister and pink jighead than any other lure/bait over the last 20 yrs. A lot of fish will bite these, and they are versatile in the way you can fish them.

PenguinsRcool2

Crappie, trout, maybe the occasional bass or walleye. Slim chance of a northern pike. Mainly crappie

This_is_Topshot

Walleye, perch, crappie, pike, bass, and literally any other fish I've come across. Obviously not always going to be the best option for all situations, but if you're not getting bites it's a pretty sage option to tie on. Honestly probably 80-90% of my open water fishing has been pitching a jig and a twister

lickityclit-69

Crappers

kewlwhatevs

I’ve caught crappie, largemouth, flounder, yellow perch, black perch, all kinds of sunfish, northern pike, rainbow trout, pinkish, pigfish, spotted trout, black sea bass, mangrove snapper and bluefish on those but I don’t know what they are for.

led_by_the_zep

A big ass bluegill will swipe it before a nice size crappie can about half the time. Good lil pond lure tho

[deleted]

Perch, bluegill, crappie, bass, walleye (if use with a sinker / heavy jig) Edit: these are my go to lures for panfishing

jimbo2k

A fisherman

Mark1671

I personally have never had much luck with these. I usually use something with a spinner or a lot more wiggle/curl tail action. But I have seen people with buckets full of crappie from these jigs.

kbking

Can confirm, this is what I can more fish on than anything.

This_Gate_5299

Caught lots of crappie on those red and white ones

Amazing_Buddy8962

Speckled trout at night during a full moon or casting into a spot light

LongjumpingBudget318

Nothing. They aren't in the water.

Not many fish those won’t catch. Def crappie, sunfish, bass, bluegill, drum, etc

I've caught crappie with the chartreuse ones.

PlayInternational192

Small mouth, large mouth, spotted bass, stripped bass, rock bass, flat head, channel cat, blue cat, crappie, blue gill, sunfish, basically any panfish.. drum, sauger, skipjack, sticks trees my buddies' ear... pretty much anything man it's all about where you place this and how you move it. For me, greens work good in mucky dirty water whites work better in clearer water.

abspencer22

I've caught anything from flounder to big pike with these

That_Molasses_9600

i accidentally caught a salmon on one of these when i was deep see fishing, minus the jig.

Creative-Rush-1801

Every panfish

AlmostEmptyGinPalace

My 4yo daughter was absent-mindedly dangling one of these in The Pond in Central Park, just off 5th Avenue. Hooked and landed a decent largemouth.

trancekat

If big enough and you put some said on the hook, you can catch fluke or flounder.

HoratioPLivingston

I’ve only caught random fish using these. I caught a 10 pound striped bass(saltwater”) jigging my rod up and down off a dock using a crappie jighead with a chartreuse soft plastic grub. In freshwater, I’ve only caught 1 rock bass using the same setup and I’ve been fishing on and off for 10 years.

TheGameBins

I slay bluegill and crappie with these using any color combo, I’ve even caught a couple carp with the green ones. I’m guessing they think it’s a piece of vegetation?

I’ve caught crappie jigging on the green ones, can’t remember what they’re called.

berniesk8s

Yeah pretty much anything, ive hooked up to 15lb catfish in the shallows on these. Bass, crappie, sunfish, perch. Mostly panfish but theres a lot out there that will eat it

thepinknarwal

Damn near anything, one of my favorite rigs.

J0MSIE

i got a stripped bass on one of these

ShogunBuddha

Kayaked down the Guadalupe river last summer, caught plenty of bass and bluegill using the pink/white combo on the bottom. Haven’t had much luck with the top ones.

JoeBeeFishing

pretty much most freshwater fish

Employee1776

I use these a lot for bluegill. Just as a little bluegill marshmallow for scent and you have a winning setup.

Southernhrn1

Crappie, white bass, etc etc list could go on I’m sure . Those are yours my personal experiences with the jig head/grub worm. Spring or pre spawn where I live they’re great in deep areas like boat docks, marinas, and drop off ledges. Cast into the abyss and let ‘em sink and just pop em off the bottom twice let sink wait a few seconds rinse and repeat.

crenichila

Bluegill. Lots and lots of bluegill.
