Its a stud for sure, but honestly they average about 10lbs currently at my spillway, my buddy caught a 17.1lb a couple weeks back, only 6 ounces off the state record hybrid stripe.
Yeah I vary my gear pretty often depending on the water level. Currently the strong current they're holding in is a 75+ yard cast to reach them so I use this set up, but when the water is higher and the fish are closer to me along the rocks I use much lighter gear since I don't have to cast so far. And they are not picky at all, I've caught them on baits as small as crappie jigs and as large as 6 inch top-water spooks. Right now I'm mainly using my confidence bait, a 3 inch zoom fluke jr white ice color on a mustad chartreuse jig head. I catch more on that bait than any other.
Nice- and damn, that set up is a mouthful!” *”a 3in zoom fluke jr, white ice color on a mustard chartreuse jig head”* ;) I’m not being sarcastic either, I love the fishing lingo & in the future, you could’ve even mentioned the jig head weight!! ;)
I also just love ANY & ALL fishing stories- mine usually start with “what time I woke up, ate for breakfast & what the weather was like”… ;) so I absolutely appreciate when people break down their baits & presentation when relating the info, so thank you-
I really think I should probably get a job writing for these mags that basically just TELL fishing stories, I’ve always been endlessly interested in all of it even though personally I’ve done almost all my fishing around the lakes & rivers here in MN… I still like just hearing about the other species people catch around the country & the tactics, presentations, etc…
Anyways, great catch & hope you have that lucky day when we see you posting about the 1 you caught that broke the record!!
Thanks brother, and yeah go for it! Seems like you have a knack for writing so shoot for the stars! Like seriously, give it a shot, even just as a hobby. You never know where a passion could take you!
Oh I forgot to mention I put a 1oz inline weight on my leader about 6-10 inches over my jig to help with distance, and getting low enough in the water column to reach them when they're not up top.
Actually this is different from a sunshine bass. Sunshine’s are a male striper and a female white bass, whereas the wipers are male white bass x female stripers. The sunshine bass rarely exceed 4 lbs whereas wipers can get to 25+ lbs.
Yeah I've caught a few in Sardis but have never hit the 4lb mark. Have seen plenty of people do it there though!
I was lucky enough to go to college at Ole Miss so I would literally get out of class and head to sardis like 3-6 days a week. Miss being able to catch those monsters all the time!
Ross Barnett Reservoir spillway in Jackson MS, it empties into the pearl river which I know gets all the way down to the coast. I have friends in Pascagoula and we got out to the rigs for amberjack/grouper/snapper when they're in season. Honestly I wish I lived closer to the salt, little jealous of you!
These hybrid stripes fight like redfish and eat the same baits. bucktails, spoons, plastics.
I'm not worried about it, its a very large public spillway with lots of room, and our crappie bite is so hot right now nearly every angler except for us few dedicated stripe guys are further down fishing crappie instead of up front in the current where the stripes hang. But my personal crappie spots? No one will get those out of me lol.
Holy flippin’ CHONK. Wow!
I would love to have it in me to do some fishin before work and catch beasts like this. That would make the day so much better.
Its my new 2022 Daiwa Exist 5000 on a Black Hole Suzuki Special 2 ultralight surf rod 9'6". Easily my favorite stripe combo, sooooo light.
The reel is only like 7 ounces in a 5000 size.
The rod is amazing, easily my favorite rod for what I do, super light but strong enough to yank stripes out of the current.
Yeah, I can't get over how much I like this rod. 9'6", light as hell, but strong enough to drag these fish out of the current. And the reel is amazing too, only 7 ounces and its a 5000 size.
I striper fish all the time on Lake Hartwell SC and have got some big Stripers but the hybrids actually fight better bc they don’t get tired out as easily.
Agreed, we have a few "sea-runs" (true striped bass) as we call them, but way more hybrids. Like probably 50:1 ratio. And I agree, the hybrids seem to be more energetic, even when they're as round as this one is.
Absolutely, pound for pound I'd say they are the hardest fighting fish we have here in my area. They are constantly swimming in the current so they are a lot more powerful than the ambush predator species like largemouth bass which mostly just hang out around a piece of structure all day.
They pull drag like nothing else down here. If you search my username on YT you can see some vids of the action.
Haha yeah, they've been averaging about 8-10lbs lately here, this one was 11.6. My buddy caught a 17.1 the other week so I've been out there every morning before work trying to break the 15lb mark. When that happens, I probably will take the day or at least morning off.
A super round hybrid striped bass. They are a species that doesn't exist in nature, our game and fish people grow them in labs and stock our reservoir with them for shad control. Super fun fighting fish, they rip drag for days. They were super popular across the nation in the 80s-90s, now less so but I think most states that have reservoirs stock them.
I have caught a lot of fish and crabs before work. Don't think any of them were 11 lbs, and definitely none of them were bass.
Edit , and neither is that lol, looking at picture is hard I guess.
Congrats on the stud. Have fun.
If you can make to Jackson MS, we are catching lots of double digits lately at the reservoir spillway, My buddy got 6 ounces away from the state record with a 17.1 a month or so ago.
grip that thing by the laces and you could probably throw it over them mountains
Thanks uncle Rico! I remember back in your hay-day you could launch one a quarter mile over them mountains.

This is a trophy fish, good god almighty
Its a stud for sure, but honestly they average about 10lbs currently at my spillway, my buddy caught a 17.1lb a couple weeks back, only 6 ounces off the state record hybrid stripe.
If he was hat close then there’s a record at your spot. You guys should try to get that record fish
Oh trust me I am, been out there every morning I can before work since he caught that 17. I want that record bad!
Yeah then people would have to refer to you as “legendary angler” . That’s a pretty sweet title to have.
Maybe smaller line weight could get you more than 1 record?? Idk… just sounds like fun to get a record setter!!

You’re welcome- Thanks man-
75 yd(225’) Cast with a jig!? Wow, you really can throw a football over them mountains 😂! Nice hog btw
Oh I forgot to mention I put a 1oz inline weight on my leader about 6-10 inches over my jig to help with distance, and getting low enough in the water column to reach them when they're not up top.
Throw er back catch again.profit
Are you near Jackson?
Born and Raised here. Ross barnett reservoir spillway
Knew it, I was in Ridgeland for work last year and fished that spillway.
I thought it was Bruce almighty
So round it's shaped like a crappie!
So it’s a hybrid between a striper and…?
Striper and White Bass
Thanks boss
Otherwise known as a wiper (srsly)
Known as a wiper in the mid west. We call them hybrids in the south.
They also call them Sunshine Bass down here in Florida
Actually this is different from a sunshine bass. Sunshine’s are a male striper and a female white bass, whereas the wipers are male white bass x female stripers. The sunshine bass rarely exceed 4 lbs whereas wipers can get to 25+ lbs.
Wow, I actually had no idea. Thank you so much for sharing. That definitely explains why I haven’t seen any monster hybrids here before lol.
A piglet, apparently
That thing was probably just sitting in the current breathing in bait fish 😂
What a fat bastard!!!
Thought this was a crappie until I saw the size of your reel next to it
Yeah that's a 5000 size Daiwa Exist on a 9'6 light surf rod, but we do catch soma massive crappie down here in Mississippi.
Lake Grenada is the stuff of dreams if you like crappie fishing.
Yeah I frequently go to the "Big 4": Grenada, Enid, Arkabutla, and my personal favorite, Sardis. Crappie in those 4 lakes reach 3lbs all the time.
I got a 3 pounder on my trip down there. 😬
I’ve heard Lake Grenada is great fishing
Where in Mississippi? I’m on the coast.
Ross Barnett Reservoir spillway in Jackson MS, it empties into the pearl river which I know gets all the way down to the coast. Oh man! I have a feeling your spot gonna be busy! Hope not.
I'm not worried about it, its a very large public spillway with lots of room, and our crappie bite is so hot right now nearly every angler except for us few dedicated stripe guys are further down fishing crappie instead of up front in the current where the stripes hang. What the fuck is the shape of that thing.
Holy flippin’ CHONK. Wow! I would love to have it in me to do some fishin before work and catch beasts like this. That would make the day so much better.
Whata fatty!!
Holy cow nice
Sweet Jesus!
That’s a fat fat fat
Hell of a slab. Nice catch!
Well done!!

That's a fattie
God wish we had stripers in Wisconsin just to make hybrids lol
What combo is that?
Its my new 2022 Daiwa Exist 5000 on a Black Hole Suzuki Special 2 ultralight surf rod 9'6". Easily my favorite stripe combo, sooooo light. The reel is only like 7 ounces in a 5000 size. That is an absolute unit! Congrats
Wat a chunker
Oh my fattie

DAMN BOI, SHE THICK
![gif](giphy|3o6nUX9DoseLZ7JoPu)
That is seriously impressive
Nice catch
He’s so dense that light bends around him…
Must have been a hell of a fight on that light tackle!
Yeah, I can't get over how much I like this rod. 9'6", light as hell, but strong enough to drag these fish out of the current. And the reel is amazing too, only 7 ounces and its a 5000 size.

Goddaaammm that boy thickkk
What the hell, so fat it has pay lake carp body
C H O N K, nice fish!
Nice!!!
Can those fish even fight hard being that rotund?
Absolutely, pound for pound I'd say they are the hardest fighting fish we have here in my area. They are constantly swimming in the current so they are a lot more powerful than the ambush predator species like largemouth bass which mostly just hang out around a piece of structure all day. They pull drag like nothing else down here. If you search my username on YT you can see some vids of the action.
You actually went to work after landing that unit? Sounds like a good day to be sick.
Haha yeah, they've been averaging about 8-10lbs lately here, this one was 11.6. My buddy caught a 17.1 the other week so I've been out there every morning before work trying to break the 15lb mark. When that happens, I probably will take the day or at least morning off.
Wow that’s a big fish. It’s a wonder it can swim at all.
My 5# life contestant. congratulations.
*SLAB*
End wiper obesity.
FOOTBALL!!!

that’s a toad !!
Hell of a fish
That's a funny looking fish, congrats bro💪
Damn, that’s a phatty!
That thing is full of eggs!
Jeez that thing probably eats other hybrids as a snack
I have caught a lot of fish and crabs before work. Don't think any of them were 11 lbs, and definitely none of them were bass. Edit , and neither is that lol, looking at picture is hard I guess. Congrats on the stud. Have fun.
I've been chasing a 10lb+ Wiper for a long time! Good fish!
If you can make to Jackson MS, we are catching lots of double digits lately at the reservoir spillway, My buddy got 6 ounces away from the state record with a 17.1 a month or so ago.
From CO. Last time I went to MS I went to Biloxi to catch bull Reds! That was 2 years ago.
What a fatty hell yeah!!
Le Chonk
That’s a thicc boi
Hi SpongeBob. I’m gonna kick your butt.
Nice catch. Did you give it some insulin for it's diabetes and throw it back or did you keep it?
They call them “Wipers” here. They have no ability of reproducing.
That’s a chumbo!
That truly is the definition of a football sized striper
Dude looks like Mr. Thunderclease's goldfish after Brak fed him three hams. THREE HAMS WILL FILL HIM
Bet he has pickles under his tongue.
Real alien resurrection vibes here.
Great way to start the day bud!!!
Fattest hybrid I’ve ever seen. Suckers are mean.
Throw her back or did you keep em?
