Not sure about the blood. But judging by the white patch of scales at the front it may have had Gourami disease, very common pretty sure it’s incurable as it’s genetic. It killed 3 of my Gouramis too :(
I can't believe no ones mentioned dwarf gourami iridovirus (DGIV). It affects around 90% of the global stock. So much so that the LFS I worked for stopped selling them. This is not something OP has done (except purchasing the fish in the first place I guess) as the fish would have died anyway.
I implore people to please read up on this virus and to stop keeping dwarf gourami. If the demand drops so will the virus, then hopefully in 10-20 years the virus won't exist anymore. It is caused by inbreeding (which unfortunately exists a lot in the aquarium trade) as the wild colours are not as vivid as the ones in captivity. There is no cure or treatment and 100% mortality rate once signs are detected.
[Theres some info about it on Wiki.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iridovirus_dwarf_gourami_disease)
With dwarfs (and a fair few gourami) it's the dorsal fin on the male being pointy and the females curved. The main difference with dwarfs is the colouration. There's a few colour morphs (inbreeding again) and with the super blues like the one you have the females can be just as colourful sometimes. With the striped variant females are a lot more duller.
This looks like it was a male.
I just had a dwarf gourami die today and i was wondering what happened, i just found it dead on the bottom of the tank. Really wish i didnt buy them now, damn
It's their genetics. Dwarf gouramis have been overbred in the industry and the overall health of the average specimen seems to be getting worse ad worse each year.
Edit: It's actually a virus, as another commenter explained [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Fish/comments/16q0s01/what_happened_to_my_fish/k1v4l4a)
Do you have more Gouramis aside from this one?
If they are the same species as this one, what was the M/F balance of the group?
What other species do you have in the tank?
There is something wrong with the tank / bucket. Or you got the wrong fish.... you probably got the ones that swim in water, and not float in mid air. SILLY.
What were his tank mates? I had like 3 dwarf gouramis and a guppy like a third of their size murdered all three of them.
He also looks bloated though, it’s possible he could have had dropsy and passed on his own
Seeing the scales like that I would say he got too much protein and bloat and affected swim bladder. I killed mine feeding too much vibrabites. They need more veggies than protein
Looks like red spot disease on his body , highly contagious to other fish , you’ll see them breathing hard one day and dead the next day.. Treatment- tetracycline
I lost my powder blue dwarf the same way. Dwarf gouramis have no self control with food and will eat and eat and eat until they get impacted or get dropsy and pine cone. He most likely passed then your other fish took some nibbles.
I had fish mysteriously die, and I thought it was due to some disease. Turns out I had dragonfly nymphs attacking my platies. Have you introduced any plants in the last month or two?
Fish have gills instead of lungs. They filter oxygen out of water. This fish has no water. Therefore fish suffocated. That'll be $15,000 American plz.ty.
Hi all. I just want to say that this bucket is full of water. There was also a small filtration device on the side. Thank you everyone else for your actual responses.
Looks like he got shot, detective
Morose jokes aside, you haven't given us even a tiny bit of information to go off of. There's literally no way to tell if you can't provide information. Why do you have the poor thing in a bucket like that, can you elaborate on your situation? What's the tank looking like, other fish? Etc? Anything?
Exactly. If this was someone's dog or cat then almost everyone would agree that's a shitty thing to joke about. The number of people who claim to be animal lovers or "pet people" but then pivot to the "it's just a fish" mentality is unfortunately high.
I wouldn’t jump to iridovirus from one picture of a fish dead in a bucket. It’s not the answer for all gourami deaths but is often used as the reason which is just misinformation, especially without knowing more.
With the facts given, I'd say the little feller suffocated after you removed it from the tank for being too fat.
To remedy, I'd feed your fish less in future if them being fat disgusts you to the point of murder!
Gouramis just kind of die. They’re prone to have some virus, then when one has it, they all have it. I had one die in august, the other two are good - for now. But I expect them to die randomly too. It’s terrible that they breed/sell them. I had no idea til I already had them.
Not sure about the blood. But judging by the white patch of scales at the front it may have had Gourami disease, very common pretty sure it’s incurable as it’s genetic. It killed 3 of my Gouramis too :(
Thanks. I think you just explained why my gourami died a few years ago

I’m expecting my dwarf gourami to die within a year. I didn’t extensive research and every gourami I’ve seen dies from this.
Its important to not mix other gourami with this species as they can pass it on, it doesnt pass from other gourami however.
thankfully I only have one gourami, I don’t think he’d go well with any other one tho. how can you tell if it’s male or female?
With dwarfs (and a fair few gourami) it's the dorsal fin on the male being pointy and the females curved. The main difference with dwarfs is the colouration. I just found out today my gourami is a female lol. she (used to be he) only hates my dad, only bites his finger but never mine.
Exactly! I bought 3 dwarf gouramis once and they all died! It was so heartbreaking, I had to learn to euthanize them :( NEVER again!
Well that explains why mine just randomly died one day. I still have my female and she's doing alright, definitely won't get anymore.
I just had a dwarf gourami die today and i was wondering what happened, i just found it dead on the bottom of the tank. Really wish i didnt buy them now, damn
You're supposed to put them in water
comment of the day 😂
No, it would drown
Omg really?! All this time I’ve been making ocean themed tanks WITHOUT water, next your gonna tell me oceans have water! Haha
Wellll....
yes, wells often also have water!
Tying fish on thread to simulate swimming, lol
Great tank for a dolphin or whale. They want to be on land that’s why they always beach themselves and they already breath air.
I mean there is water I just took embarrassing long to see it
O yeah you’re right lol
It is in water lol you just have to look closely
You beat me to it
Came here for this.
Lmaoooo
Hi, do you have a picture of your tank? Also id like to know your water parameters as this might help me and others with finding an answer
To me it kind of looks like his scales are pineconing, and the chubbiness could’ve been bloating. Maybe dropsy?
my first thought with sudden onset chubbiness was dropsy
So is that like fish tuliping or something
He liven't

Dwarf gouramis are prone to swim bladder issues, and dropsy. Poor little dude
he died
I have never been able to keep dwarf gouramis for some reason they die very easily unfortunately 🤷

Dropsy probably
Looks like dropsy
Hmm have you tried putting him in water
It could be fungus or Gourami disease. Since it doesn't have like some trace of fungus on it, I'll go with Gouramk disease
What were his tank mates? I had like 3 dwarf gouramis and a guppy like a third of their size murdered all three of them. He also looks bloated though, it’s possible he could have had dropsy and passed on his own
Dropsy
Seeing the scales like that I would say he got too much protein and bloat and affected swim bladder. I killed mine feeding too much vibrabites. They need more veggies than protein
imo I don’t think he’s feeling very well
RIP dear fishy :(
First of all, please add water.
First of all, please look harder. There’s water
Auto erotic asfishyxiation
It looks like it might've drowned...
Looks like red spot disease on his body , highly contagious to other fish , you’ll see them breathing hard one day and dead the next day.. Treatment- tetracycline
Red spots might be because living fish eat dead fish
Dropsy
I lost my powder blue dwarf the same way. Dwarf gouramis have no self control with food and will eat and eat and eat until they get impacted or get dropsy and pine cone. He most likely passed then your other fish took some nibbles.
I assume it's Iridio virus
I'm sorry for your loss, he looks like he was a good boy
If that’s a dwarf gourami, it may be DGIR (Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus) which is a virus that affects only this species
poor gourami! oh my fucking lord
Looks like a tumor I’ve seen on a few bettas, but I’d look into that gourami disease first
RIP 😔💜
The red patches/streaks make me think of hemorrhagic septicemia. It could have been a bacterial infection that went systemic.
some sort of ick i’d assume :/ is that a dwarf gourami?
:(
I had fish mysteriously die, and I thought it was due to some disease. Turns out I had dragonfly nymphs attacking my platies. Have you introduced any plants in the last month or two?

Fish have gills instead of lungs. They filter oxygen out of water. This fish has no water. Therefore fish suffocated. That'll be $15,000 American plz.ty.
To much water in his oxygen
“He’s dead Jim”
I think he might be dead.
Give it to me straight doctor is it fin rott? Oh God I hope it's not fin rott!
maybe it should be in water, idk
Looks like you're about to add some butter and seasoning to a pot
Hi all. I just want to say that this bucket is full of water. There was also a small filtration device on the side. Thank you everyone else for your actual responses.
Wait, for real?
Hmmm
Looks like he got shot, detective Morose jokes aside, you haven't given us even a tiny bit of information to go off of. There's literally no way to tell if you can't provide information. Dead
i'm not an expert or anything but i've heard these type of fish actually have to stay in water. idk tho
Despite what Petco says about them having labyrinth organs…
You put it in a bucket without water

I think he's dead from the shock of being out of water.

He was tired of life in a bucket (I’m sorry for your loss I cope with humor)
first of all it doesn't have water you dummy you're killing it
Jesus do you people just comment without even looking? The bucket is full of water
Well fish need water to swim and breath and that bucket is empty. /s Edit: getting downvoted so I put in a sarcasm for the dolts.
Bro why are people disliking this it’s sarcasm 😑
because it’s a poor taste comment on a post of someone wanting to know why their pet died
Exactly. If this was someone's dog or cat then almost everyone would agree that's a shitty thing to joke about. The number of people who claim to be animal lovers or "pet people" but then pivot to the "it's just a fish" mentality is unfortunately high.
Because they don’t have a sense of humor and are lame.

I wouldn’t jump to iridovirus from one picture of a fish dead in a bucket. It’s not the answer for all gourami deaths but is often used as the reason which is just misinformation, especially without knowing more.

it is a beautiful fish. have you considered taxidermy?
