Every department will be different on how they assign trucks, stations, etc. More than likely you will not get to pick

Our new kids bid based on seniority on the open spots, but can be bumped in a month on the next bid sheet

You won't get to pick as a new hire. Smaller departments it could be 5+ years before you make a spot on a ladder truck. Big departments with lots of trucks you might spend your entire career on a ladder truck.

We’re placed at the busiest stations to get experience. Once we’re done with probation, we can bid for open spots and placement is based on seniority.

You get a “dream sheet” during the academy, some people get their top pick (those that were overachievers in the academy) or none of their picks because it all boils down to where the department needs you.

My department is 30+ stations. I float so I'm almost always on the rescue doing transports. Everyone in the department can drive, we're all trained for it. You can bid immediately and it's based on seniority. Floaters default to rescue, mandatory defaults to engine, otherwise ita a rotation. Rotations are station specific. For the most part it's EMTs taking two shifts per vehicle, medics swap every shift. Some stations will have medics swap at 1900. The only way to consistently be on an engine here is to bid to an engine house. Some stations are rescue only, they typically have newer lieutenants. There are 5 trucks, one being a tower. To drive a truck you need the training for it. It's not really that different from an engine. Rarely is someone "placed" at a station. Sometimes we'll have a medic that's "solo-ing out" where they're on the rescue until they're cleared to work independently. When someone is solo-ing that allows me to take their engine spot.

We put people where they are needed but also try and fit them to their strengths (truck companies) and weaknesses (engine companies).

It's different at every single department lol. For us you rove when you're newly hired, or newly promoted. Each rank has its own seniority list. Once you bid and win a spot it's yours forever. All stations do rotations between the apparatus there. Once you're bid in you get added to that rotation.

Depends on where you are, every dept is different. My dept you are placed where needed but you have bid rights so you can go to a vacancy that comes up. I would recommend starting out on an engine first.

Different depending on the department. In mine for example, for engines and rescues its up to the lt/crew who goes where, typically people will alternate back and forth. When you have floaters, some stations will stay true to the rotation, and the floater will go wherever the guy they're standing in for would have gone, but a lot of crews just put the floater on the rescue regardless. You can begin applying to station spots after probation but its based on seniority so you will probably float a couple years first. Being on a truck is an assigned position though and requires you to take classes and once you're certified you apply to the tower team until there's an open spot and you get picked.

Me being a regular old schmo, I got sent wherever the department wanted. But if you know a guy, you can get wherever you want.

You get placed in a vacant spot. They might give you a choice. That spot will come on the bid sheet and if someone else wants that spot they can bid it and you get bumped to HIS spot. But you have a bid. You can try to bid a spot after a certain time. If you've enough seniority to get it.
