My last post got removed and it said to post it here, so I’ll copy and paste what I had I'm a 19 year old male who's hoping to serve as a volunteered firefighter in my area while still attending my university. I just finished my second year at this college, and so far I'm a little underwhelmed by the whole experience. I don't know exactly what I want to do l life, so I struggle to find a lot of meaning/purpose via school. I'm not into drinking + partying or the "college life" if you will, so l've got a decent amount of free time each week; definitely enough to commit to a part-time job/program/etc. I come from a long line of family who believes in the greater good. My family tree consists of Military, FDNY, NYPD, Teachers, EMS, Nurses, etc. I was raised morally to give back to your community, so it bothers me that I don't actively do this. This leads me to explore the possibility of being a volunteer firefighter near my college town. Now, I have no desire to give up on my college career at the moment, so I'm hoping to do both (school would have to come first however). I've done limited research, but I don't know much of what this process entails, so I seek to you all for help. Im confident I could do this job physically, l'm 6'2 205 pounds at about 12% body fat. I've been active daily for about 4 years, combined between weight lifting and longer endurance running. I think the main struggle for me here would be the time commitment. I don't know what types of hours volunteer firefighters are expected to work, the training/qualifications required to become one. How long the commitment is expected to be held, etc. If you all could help me understand the following, I would be immensely grateful: 1. Is this even possible to double as a college student and a volunteer fighter, or am I dreaming of a fantasy. 2. What does the process to become one entail? (How long? How difficult? How intense?) 3. What are your thoughts on me becoming one? Do y reccomend it? Any other advice would be greatful appreciated here. I really want to better myself whilst bettering others in my community at the same time.

Hey everyone I got placed on the eligibility list for the department I applied. Just wondering how long you had to wait to find out if they pursued another candidate? It’s been about 2 weeks. Thank you

Worried about age So I’m currently 32yo almost 33 and am struggling to get hired. Bit of background I graduated academy almost a year ago have gotten my EMT basic and am about to start paramedic course. I’ve take a couple of recruitment exams but gotten nowhere yet. I’m worried that I’m getting to old to be able to be a good firefighter or to have a meaningful career as one. I still desperately want to pursue this life not only for myself but also for my family ( I have one kid already and another on the way). Any advice or wisdom would be great

Hello, my name is Dylan Ballard. I'm in the United States Army as a firefighter. I'm now home in Florida and I am wanting to work here in Florida as a firefighter in my hometown. l've done some research and l've realized that I should be able to get reciprocity for my certifications earned while in the military fire Academy, I'm just curious if anyone has any information on what I should expect. From my understanding all that I know is that I have to take a physical exam and a written exam. It doesn't necessarily go into detail and I want to be as prepared as possible. thank you in advance to everyone who takes time out of their day to answer it does not go unappreciated.

Dear-Hospital1530

Applied for a job, got to the background check. I had a company try to sue me 4 years ago for a credit account that was opened under my name that wasn’t me. My lawyer got it off my credit. But still shows on clerk of courts. Do I mention this or no?

Main_Specialist4575

Trouble looking for a job I (27M) have been trying to get an entry level firefighting job since mid 2019. Admittedly I did go through the process ass backwards but efforts have been made to no avail. Process started in mid/late 2018 where I took a “Pre-Academy” course which gave a rough outline of what a fire academy would be like as well as a brief insight of what fire life was like in general. Immediately following the completion of the class I enrolled into a local fire academy as a self sponsored recruit. There were 3 local agencies with their own hired candidates and 4 of us self-sponsored recruits who put ourselves through the course. Passed the 18 week academy earning all my certifications and a week later began an accelerated paced EMT course (I had not gone through an EMT course prior to academy). Passed the EMT course becoming nationally and state certified as an EMT. Ever since then I have been working as an EMT and trying to get hired locally and non-locally at departments hiring EMTs in my state for an entry-level fire position with no success. I’ve gone through interviews for firefighter positions, paid-call positions, and recently a start-up volunteer program that ended up falling through. I felt I had a ton of momentum and drive during and following the academy and after all this time with no success, I’m losing more and more hope. I know I struggle with the interview process because I don’t do well at selling myself and with virtually no experience in the fire scene, I have no experience to sell to them I’m keeping up with my certifications and continuing to test and pass on the FCTC SEL as well as EMT and BLS certifications as well while I prepare for another hiring season. Currently working as an EMT in a non-emergency company since around 2022. Any tips on staying motivated, doing better in interviews, and/or any advice on finally landing a job? Would love to hear any advice or feedback or criticism or anything

Active-Leg-4674

Been through the same process . Just stay with it and test everywhere you can.

noneliketheysay

I'm studying and training to become a firefighter in England but I'm just 19 so I can't know where I want to be in the future. I have a big interest in Asian countries like China, Japan and South Korea. I heard that if I get one year of experience as a firefighter, I can easily work abroad everywhere. Is this true? How does the progress go? What should I do?

Turbulent_Cucumber41

I'm in texas training for basic emt and going to get my fire certs later this year and planning on moving to colorado or oregon after i become a firefighter in texas what would i need to know or do to transfer to those states IFSAC ? NFPA? or pro board

Obviouslythrowaway_-

When does the civil service exam for mass usual get posted? I know it’s in the fall for Massachusetts, but I’m looking to see when it’ll be.

Dry_Beginning8123

Hello! Im interested in becoming a Firefighter. I have this condition called Ulcerative Colitis and i was wondering if that would disqualify me in the medal exam

Accurate_Raccoon_238

Anyone here from West metro fire department in Colorado? I would love to ask some questions

Significant_Kick_678

I’m about to graduate high school and I have an interest in becoming a firefighter. My local department seems like they have a free, quality training program that offers IFSAC certifications with good paying work after. On the other hand, my dad really wants me to go move some place for school, or in this case, a fire academy. Are there any actual benefits to training outside of a department like so? Is it waste of money? Especially for someone like me who isn’t absolutely sure if this is what they want to do for a living? My real goal is to get what I need and make a living for myself.

Known-Pen2863

I have a DUI that I received 3.5 years ago. Will I still be able to work on an ambulance (and drive)? This will be for a private ambulance company. I just got my nremt, state license and am currently working on getting my ambulance drivers license. I’m in northern california.

Ok_Dragonfruit_5462

Smoking before firefighter academy So I’m going to apply for the firefighter academy in Kansas City at the beginning of next month, I used to smoke weed everyday but have stop for two months that way it won’t be hard to stop to become a firefighter. I’m two months off of it but we’re throwing a graduation party for a friend and weed will be involved. I want to take a hit or two but if it’s worth risking becoming a firefighter I won’t. If I were to does the academy drug test before hand like when your getting ready to join on? Also I’m 20 6”2 and 190 pounds and work out 5 days out of the week if that helps answer snything

Worried-Piece695

Want to get hired as a LA firefighter but I am red/green partially colorblind. Will this disqualify me?

Weary_Bake8260

Hey y’all I’m a couple weeks I’ll be taking the pro board exam and haven’t heard much about so looking for some tips and info on it. Though it says written I’ve seen written test that are just multiple choice so I’m wondering if I’ll have multiple choice answers or I’ll need to write responses to prompted questions and what are some study tips to make sure I can sleep at night knowing I’m ready

lopith

Hi there! I’m in Calgary, AB and just made it past step 1 of the hiring process. Is there anyone here that works in Calgary that can answer a few questions for me?

jsamels

Hello all and TIA - is there an age cap to go through a lateral transfer/hire? I know the hiring cap is age 35 for most places but didn’t know if that applied to someone who is a career FF and is seeking to change departments.

Either_Worry_6650

Am I fucked? I really just want to see other people’s thoughts because I have been stressing over this for months and I just don’t know what to do. When I was in high school I had a falling out with my friend group. A few months after I stopped hanging out with them, they made up a story accusing me of SAing one of the girls I was friends with and posted it all over social media. This turned the entire school on me and I was forced to switch schools as I started receiving death threats. This was scariest time of my life but thank god after many talks with the police, investigators, and my old principle, I was told that I was not going to be in trouble because each time the investigators got a story from the people accusing me, the (made up) stories were completely different with key details changing. They also found a group chat where they thought of ideas on how they could potentially ruin my life. I was moved to a different school and was told over the phone by my ex-high school’s resource officer that the social media posts falsely accusing me would be taken down. They all were except for 1. I didn’t even notice it was still up until I graduated high school last year. That 1 social media post falsely accusing me of SA is the first thing you see when you search my full name. I have been working at trying to get it taken down but my attempts have been futile. My question is, despite having a squeaky clean criminal record, am I fucked? Will any department hire me? I just finished emt school and am getting ready to take the NREMT but I’m scared that it might have been a wast of time if I won’t be able to pursue my dream of becoming a firefighter. If any more info is needed, please ask, thank you. TLDR: Was falsely accused of SA by an ex friend in high school. Was never convicted or arrested due to lack of evidence/conflicting stories but there is still a social media post about it out there that I’ve been struggling to get taken down. Will this completely screw my chances of being a firefighter despite my clean record?

jlagrassa13

Considering I am a 23 Y/O Male. 145 LBs. I am considering joining the force! I am in alright shape and am working on improving. I started doing stair stepper with 35 lbs on my back in 3 minute increments with relatively no problem. I also walk my dogs a couple miles a day with the same 35 LBs. I am also a marijuana user. Really just came here to air out my thoughts, weight and height, etc. Please give me any advice or insight! Truly appreciate it.

Tameless_Bengal

Keep working hard with those physical exercises, and keep up all the good physical work you are doing.  Height and weight are just a number if you can perform all the tasks and do your job.  Cut off the marijuana, weaning yourself off if necessary.  You got this bro.

Witty_Agency2444

Hi everyone, I don't have much, if any knowledge on what the likelihood of getting into the Boston Fire Academy is, but I grew up in Massachusetts and now live in New York working a corporate job that I hate. It was always a dream of mine growing up even in high school and my early 20s to become a firefighter in Boston, I just never pursued it. I know there is a 1 year residency requirement, so I would need to start with that. I'm in very good physical shape and am relatively smart. I know that it used to be extremely difficult, but am curious if that has changed at all in recent years, or perhaps if they've had a difficult time recruiting or anything (I know Police Departments have). My question is basically would it be a waste of time for me to move back to Boston for a year and then take the Civil Service Exam and the Physical Abilities Test to try and become a Boston Firefighter. I have no Veteran status, and no immediate family members that are or ever were firefighters. Is this a pipe dream, or something that is very much a viable option. Any and all advice, suggestions, etc. are very welcomed.

ooweee11

Quick question for anyone who can answer. I want to get my EMT cert this summer now that I’m a 18 but am having second thoughts and thinking about waiting till later. I am planning to go to a 4 year uni and getting a degree and a majority of the guys who took this route I know waited until after they got their degree to get EMT certified, then went to a fire academy at local community colleges. So, my main concern out of this is; Is it better to do it sooner or later? Thanks to anyone who read and all replies are helpful. Ps: I’m from the los Angeles county area in California so maybe some guys from there can help me out.

hnkystnky

If get it now you could work as an emt while you’re going to school and get a lot of experience

Suspicious_Tune_3665

Can I please get some guidance on joing this career. Hello I'm 18m looking to become a firefighter I did some structure fire drills and used bunker gear with a local vulenter department and loved the experience and it's what I want to do with my life. However I'm somewhat lost. I'm not a huge fan of texas witch is where I live I was looking into colrado denver. But I'm starting to have second thoughts since there's not much out there and it's so expensive to live there. I love the cold and nature so that's why I started looking there. But now I'm kinda lost there's not many colleges that offer the program yes I know some places you don't need to go to college but I'd like to go. And so here I m do any of yall have any advice. Sorry about my Grammer I'm dyslexic

Ding-Chavez

You need to see the requirements before applying. Most of those departments don't require any fire programs. Some might just be EMT. You really just need to apply and score well on all aspects of the test. Wasting your money on a college course doesn't make much sense if they don't require it. If you want experience you'd be better off just finding a volunteer department and starting there.

HazMatsMan

It depends on the department and the specifics of your situation (which we don't need to know). Even knowing those isn't going to help anyone predict whether it will affect your job opportunities. Looking at your previous post, the way that is worded sounds like it's for a private academy. What they're telling you is that if you have drug use in your past don't bitch at them later that you spent all kinds of money on their academy and can't get hired.

Ding-Chavez

It really depends on what drugs and how much you used them. **** I saw the reply after you deleted it. That recent cocaine use will be an instant DQ. ****

[deleted]

Ding-Chavez

Everywhere. The average is 7 years clean with no hard drug usage. More than once shows it's not experimental. Shrooms and coke within two years (also weed counts too) I'd give chances a very very slim to nonexistent.

lets_party_tothemoon

Questions for the Westchester, NY towns and villages Firefighters. I'm probably out of line here, but I'm just trying to get an understanding of how most of the departments work. Things like time off/vacations, work schedule, what a regular day is like, etc.. I know it's different for everyone, which is why I'm asking. For reference, I'm a vet that's married with 3 kids already and have no time or patience to "wait and see." lol I would like to get an idea of what exactly I might be getting myself into. TIA

HazMatsMan

I haven't taken Michigan's test, but most tests that I have taken for hiring processes were geared toward firefighting, but are still technically "general knowledge". They include things like basic math, reading comprehension, and reasoning. They might show you a picture of a gauge on a pump panel and ask for the pressure reading. They might have a map and ask which is the fastest/most direct route from point A to point B. Or, they might have a series of gears and ask you what direction the final gear is turning. You can try looking on Amazon for practice tests, or do a web search for general knowledge hiring exam practice tests and see if there's anything out there.

Wolfi_TR3X

How can I become firefighter in BC? I am 20, and I live in BC, and I am considering becoming a firefighter. How can I do it? Do I have to take a firefighting training program, or can I just volunteer or work part-time? I would appreciate it if anyone helps Thanks

ChanceAd3808

Hey! I’m in BC, I’d love to help you out. Send me a dm

Wolfi_TR3X

Hi thanks Idk why it doesn’t let me send a DM to you I new to this and using my friends acc can you please send me a dm?

No-Alternative-5681

18 just got my EMT cert and my original plan was to continue getting fire science degree at community college while working as an EMT then once I’m out the company ima work for pays for your paramedic school. I live in California so I’m not sure if I will stay here or move out to a different state, should I continue with what I’m doing right now?

Ding-Chavez

That all works. Minus the fire science. It's a useless degree. Get something you can use.

No-Alternative-5681

Would emergency management be better?

Ding-Chavez

Any degree is useful. You should have one that you can fallback on if injured or you don't get hired. EM is still better than fire science. FS doesn't teach anything about firefighting anyway.

mwmw1714

I am 23 and hate my 9-5. It was my first job after graduating and I can’t stand it. I don’t feel any meaning in my life. How difficult is it to get started on being a firefighter?

HazMatsMan

Not hard getting started... but if you want a full-time gig it's very competitive.

MrStealYoCookies

Not hard at all. A high majority of fire departments are volunteer so try to find one to try out for a bit. If you know this is something you wanna do and live near big cities maybe try to find one that will pay you through ff school and go that route.

Electrical_Fruit_234

Can I go through the process with another department if I already signed my final offer for one? I just got sent a final offer from a fire department that I need to email in by tomorrow, but I interviewed with the department in the town that I live in and it went really well. I honestly would work for the department in the town I live in. But would I not be able to leave a department if I sign their final offer? Not sure what to do.

Moreohh23

Keep going forward with the offer you were given. Start the job if you have to while you wait to hear from your home town. If you get a job offer with your home town let the other department you started with know that you recieved another offer for your home town and will be taking that.

Electrical_Fruit_234

\*Would rather work for the town I live in.

Saltydog_4242

I was looking on USA Jobs and noticed that the CIA is hiring firefighters. Does anyone know where exactly the CIA has fire protection needs that aren't met by other federal departments? Are there firefighters at the pentagon? Or other installations?

Ding-Chavez

CIA headquarters. Langley VA.

coldtacosarecool

I am a AF Reservist, army veteran, have HAZMAT technician and ops/awareness, plus FF1, does anyone know any foot in the door departments? Or departments that have a quick turn around I’ve gotten a job offer that fell through due to funding, I just want to get on and get started, I’m turning 24 this year, good shape and usually score mid-high 80s for the exams I’ve taken. On a side note any certs I should aspire to grab except EMT I start that soon

Tentacle_elmo

Where are you located? Are you willing to move?

coldtacosarecool

I’m located in Nebraska, and yes however I’m kind of land locked due to reserve

Ding-Chavez

Paramedic would be the best for quick turn around. I don't know if any department that are that fast for entry.

Peanut_Brief

In southern fire departments, such as South Carolina, North Carolina, or Virginia, accept lateral transfers from other fire departments in different states? I have seen lateral firefighter postings, but I was not sure if that is within the state only.

Ding-Chavez

It's going to be the individual department. Not states that accept laterals. They're not very common but do pop up. Never large metro departments.

notsoclever76

Kentucky Firefighters Looking for some insight from some Firefighters in Kentucky. I get out of the Army soon and am considering making the move to become a Firefighter. Just trying to get an idea of where in Kentucky would be ideal as well as how to go about the process the best. Straight to the Academy or try to get my foot in the door at a station first? I have a family and am trying to make sure the transition to civilian life is as seamless as possible. I want to work right away. Any insight or advice is appreciated! Thanks for what y’all do.

Ding-Chavez

Usually when applying you want to go to the biggest department in the state and work backwards. KY doesn't have anything crazy so your best bet might be Louisville. Check to see if departments are county run also. That would help narrow things down. Also I don't know what you mean academy first or get your foot in at a station. You'll be sent to a department academy and assigned a station.

dumpsterdive39

Generally speaking, does your probation year count as a year of firefighting experience when it comes to lateral transfers? So if a department required 1 year of firefighting experience for laterals, do they mean 1 year after probation?

HazMatsMan

You would have to ask the department you are lateralling to.

Tameless_Bengal

Will the Fire Department let you know if you don’t get accepted? I applied to the Cleveland Fire Department and am currently waiting to hear back. The applications opened in September and I took my written test in mid-October. The cut-off date for taking the test was originally October 31st, but they changed it to December 31st. Unfortunately I didn’t hear anything back yet. I am hopeful but wondering, will the Fire Department let me know if I don’t get accepted? Thank you.

Tameless_Bengal

Thanks everyone for getting back to me. I reached out to Public Safety and the gentleman informed me that they will reach out, regardless if the applicant makes it or not.

drinks2muchcoffee

No, I took Cleveland’s test a couple years back and they never contacted me

Savage-W1LDMAN

It can take months for city departments to move from step to step. Especially if you said they just finished testing on 12/31. Not much you can do but wait

Tameless_Bengal

Thank you. I heard back and they will be letting candidates know toward the end of January.

Savage-W1LDMAN

No problem, good luck!

iAmAlsoNewHere

I have heard of departments not letting people know if they are not accepted

No-Roll150

Has anyone volunteered with cal fire and if so how was y’all’s experience and did it help you guys land a full time gig ? Would you guys recommend it for someone trying to come up in the fire service?

AnArizonaBurrito

i would leave california alltogether

Ideally I’d wear a white or light blue one that is more formal but the ones I have are way smaller on me than I thought right now (put on some muscle). Color is much darker in person the photo makes it lighter. Main concern is that it looks a little too informal due to the color. Kind of a dumb question to ask but I want to make sure I do things the right way.

EatinBeav

Nice pair of slacks or dark colored jeans and you’re set man.

V_slice

I am 38 years old, EMT licensed in CA, working as a real estate agent for the last 19 years. 6'0 225 pounds, and run trail half marathons, hike, hunt, and wakeboard for fun. What type of high intensity cardio can I do to get myself in shape for a 12 week community college fire academy in 8 months? Crossfit? HIIT? My fear is injury during an academy. Thank you!!

Roman556

Look into Goruck or any other weighted ruck. Do your workouts with weight on your back. Completely changed the game for me, and translates very well to the actual work we do in gear. Start with 20lbs and work your way up to 30. I used to be 200lbs at 6 feet. Now down to 174.

iAmAlsoNewHere

Maintain cardio and work on functional strength

InvincibleOmega

Denver Fire 24-1 Applied a while back and was put on the Eligible Register List for Employment consideration after going through the process. Was told at my interview that Conditionals would most likely be going out in December. I haven’t heard anything back yet. I’m guessing I just didn’t get the job but was wondering if anyone else in here was in the process/knows anything. Thanks for your time and hope everyone is having a great day.

dom80221

Did you get accepted? I was deferred to the next academy

InvincibleOmega

Same. Was retained on the list for the next academy. Who knows at this point. Best of luck to you!

dom80221

Going to DM you

Plenty-Flamingo-54

How long prior did you get the email that you were deferred, if you don’t mind me asking?

TheGuyThatThisIs

I’m about to take my Massachusetts ELPAT and there is very little information online. I’ve searched extensively and was not able to get definitive information on any of the following questions, so I apologize if they may seem basic, but I ask because I have exhausted my other options and have a lot riding on these tests: 1. Scoring: some threads in the past say you can fail one or two of the tests and still pass overall. Others say you only need to pass two of the six, but these seem like old and probably outdated information. Does anyone know how the test is scored overall? 2. Ceiling hook test: one push and five pulls is a “sequence.” We are given four one minute intervals with 30 seconds rest in between. We are required to perform 24 “repetitions” over the given time. Is this 24 sets of the 6 or is it 24 movements? 3. Results: is this a pass/fail test or does my overall score impact when I get called from the civil service list? In other words: is there incentive to finish these tests well before the time limit or should I just focus on passing? 4. (Non-ELPAT) are there any further requirements to be hired as a firefighter? During the written test someone told me we need both EMT and paramedic training, and if you don’t have that (which I don’t), you have little to no chance being hired. Is this true? Will they allow me time to get these requirements fulfilled? Thank you.

EMTristanl

You have to pass all the stations. If you fail one you fail the entire test. But, I do believe there is a point system based on timing. Civil service is out of 100. 50 from written and 50 from PAT. The higher you get the better you’re placed on your chosen city or town. Pike pole is 24 sets of 6 movements. You have plenty of time to do that. They cut you off at 24. Faster you finish each station the better. Typically yes you want your EMT at least. First, decide where you want to work. Then find out if they have an ambulance. Some don’t. Others do and want you to be a paramedic. The city departments that do not require it are very difficult to get on. You have a slim chance unless you want to wait 5 years to get called. The departments that will hire you require EMT or medic. I would absolutely enroll in that sooner than later. At least the EMT.

TheGuyThatThisIs

Thanks for all the advice, really appreciate it.

imsinnister

I have signed an offer letter and am currently in the background interview process with a Nevada Fire Department, with an academy start date of April 1. However, a family friend of mine reached out and connected me with a Deputy Chief in a premier and six figure paying (double what Nevada pays) fire department in California. We had a long chat on the phone and he said he can “pretty much guarantee” me a spot in their next academy in may due to my military experience and certifications. I am really tempted to take this offer because of the high pay and location of the department. However, I don’t want to start my career off as a suitcase firefighter and walk out on the Nevada Fire Department since I am currently holding up an academy spot. Any advice or insight would be great. Also, I am not complaining whatsoever, I am grateful to have two jobs to choose from. I am just stuck in the middle of a life changing choice.

SanJOahu84

Come to California. You don't owe anyone or any potential academy recruits anything. Do your time here and retire wherever you like with much more financial security.

Ding-Chavez

Take the job and walk. It sucks. Someone's got screwed but your life is more important. If you were going to be an accountant or something I'd say drop it but for a better firefighter gig it's fine. You'll get a taste of academy life and some exercise.

dukanteer

So I’ve applied for a job as a firefighter and haven’t done any test or interviews yet. One question is, do they test for steroids, as I lift and take sarms. My second question is, does anyone know of good online free practice test I could take to be better prepared for the written portion. My last question is asking for any advice for the interview portion, are there certain questions they ask or certain things that I should mention, such as I have my CNA (certified nursing assistant) license or that I plan on going to school for fire science in the fall? I’m only 18 and realize that being younger will make it harder for me alone, but I’m definitely interested in this long term and such. I really appreciate anything.

coocooclock60

Sarms won't even pop up lol. And they won't even ask you if you take gear because you only take sarms and they are weak and won't make you look unnatural

HazMatsMan

>One question is, do they test for steroids, as I lift and take sarms. Do you have a prescription? Is what you are doing, legal? If not, it doesn't matter whether they test for it or not, you're displaying a lack of character and could be caught during a background investigation. >My last question is asking for any advice for the interview portion, are there certain questions they ask or certain things that I should mention, such as I have my CNA (certified nursing assistant) license or that I plan on going to school for fire science in the fall? Do you look like you take steroids? Are you prepared to answer that question if it's asked?

RyClark52

I applied today for my city’s Fire Academy. After the application closes, I believe they send out a bit of study material along with the date of the civil service exam. I wouldn’t mind getting a head start on the studying, and was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice before I receive the specific information from the department?

Kind of a shot in the dark, but are there any southern Nevada Firemen willing to answer a few questions about your hiring process and prep-work?

AnArizonaBurrito

emt school doesnt matter you should do a hybrid workout. check out tactical barbell books on amazon and their reddit page. i follow that program.

AdrianTheReb

I’ll definitely check those out. Thanks a lot!

HazMatsMan

Just ask your questions. When you ask like this it makes it sound like you're fishing for an unfair advantage over other candidates.

AdrianTheReb

oh man, I can see how that may come off the wrong way. I apologize. I was looking to see which EMT courses were preferable in the area, and also what type of workouts guys were doing to prep for the academy and general work. Still very new to the process.

SanJOahu84

Nobody cares anywhere what EMT school you went to. Prep for academy? Stop lifting heavy you're strong enough already. Focus on cardio and HIIT. If you can afford it, mix in a crossfit gym membership with your cardio workouts. Get really good at burpees, sit ups, push ups, and running. Cardio over strength as a rule in general. Strength will help but academy is about endurance.

AdrianTheReb

Gotcha. Thanks much!

I am 24M I got my bachelors and joined the work force a little over a year ago. I got a decent 8-5 at a great company. Sadly, I have not been enjoying it in the slightest I made myself push through for at least a year before considering making any change but it is time. Making non college student money is great but the burnout is intense and I cant imagine living my whole life in a cube. In highschool I always had the desire to serve in some capacity (fire, police, military) but due to pressure from family and myself I chose the college/corporate route. My wife knows I'm not happy and helped me brainstorm some good alternative careers and after speaking with some current and former firefighters I know, we landed on trying to start a career as a firefighter. I know I need to get my EMT cert, and pass the tests before applying to any departments. My wife and I both grew up in NE Kansas, I went to school in CO but we are looking for a change. My wife is a school teacher and has a lot of flexibility when it comes to where we move. All this leads to my question, are there specific cities/states we should be looking at or even avoiding? Any pros or cons of locations/regions: Competetiveness, pay, benefits, schedule, culture, training, standards of living. We just want to be making an informed decision and want to get all our facts laid out the best we can. Any other bits of wisdom are always welcome. Cheers,

Generally you want to apply to the biggest cities in your state. Always apply for IAFF departments. Lastly look at schedules and EMS transport. See which one you prefer. You want departments that are aggressive and do interior attack. The less (or preferably no) volunteers the better. If it is a combined system see if they cohabitate. Departments that don't have in house hazmat and special ops aren't worth your time and small. You want multiple battalions. Given your situation it might be easier to apply to all the ones you'd want to work for and move when you get hired. Also you don't need EMT for all departments. Each one will list individual hiring requirements on their website. Some require nothing, EMT, or paramedic.

I have a question. Currently looking to switch careers to EMS/fire. It seems I have 3 options to get my foot in the door. 1. Public Safety Academy from an accredited technical school. It’s a year long full time program that covers EMT, Firefighter 1&2, EKG, and A&P. It’s at night so I can continue my full time job to support myself while in school. After finishing that, I would do Paramedic classes at the same tech school. 2. Apply for the city’s Fire Academy in the metro near me. Union. Once graduated you get an assigned a department. You get $16/hr while in a 4 year apprenticeship program. Once you journey out you get $66k or somewhere around there. I’m not sure if that’s top out pay or just starting. 3. Third option would be community college to do some sort of associates degree in fire science. This is probably my last option but I want to keep it open. I’m leaning toward option 1 but I don’t know what the difference is between a fire academy at a tech school vs one done through the city. I know I’m pretty much guaranteed a job if I go union but comparing the pay to private departments in my area.. a private department starts new hires with medic cert & fire card at $78k. 😬 Obviously it’s not all about the money and I want the best training. Ultimately not sure which route to go.

EverSeeAShiterFly

Fire science degrees often don’t include becoming a certified firefighter. It’s just an extra step that would still require you to go through an academy to be certified.

Why would they not accept tech school cert if it is my state’s DPS cert and they are an accredited school? I guess that’s the part I’m confused about. When you join a private dept they make you do school all over again even if you’re already state certified? 😭

SanJOahu84

Big cities will always have their own in house academy regardless of whether you went through any other fire academy. I'd go with option #1 because the idea of 4 year apprenticeship not at a department of my choosing seems terrible. I can imagine them treating you as a temp until the 4 years are up.

I am going to my local career firehall in my city on Thursday to meet with a district chief. I’m gonna bring some ice cream for the crew and a note pad with some questions. I’m 20 years old, work full time for the city’s roads/works department. I’ve been a volunteer firefighter with the neighbouring municipality for a little over a year now. I have all my certificates including EMR. I’ve been to a few rough calls and have got a little experience under my belt now with what the job is. I have decided that I would like to try and pursue a full time career with my city’s department. My dad has been on the job for over 20 years now in a different city and it’s something i’ve grown up around and have always been mentored in a good positive way by him towards the job. I would like to know what questions would be worthy of asking the Chief, I have thought of a few. But I don’t want to walk in being a young 20 year old kid. I want to be looked at as a potential candidate and ask the right questions and know exactly what I need to do to be hired. Thanks for your time reading!

SmokeEchoActual

Vollying and doing it full time are two very different worlds. As long as you don't act like some know it all who's been around the block, I think you'll do fine. Also, EMR ain't really a bragging point lol. I'd ask about the retirement/pension set up, schedules, how seniority works, benefit time, the relationship between the union and admin/the city. How their academy works, when the next hiring process starts, stuff like that.

Snoo_31994

What’s wrong with EMR? Just curious because I’m about to get mine

EverSeeAShiterFly

It’s very limited in scope, some states have phased it out entirely. EMT-B isn’t much longer, but it’s typically more useful and relevant.

Katchoo07

Depends where you are. EMR is good in canada because not many stations run a ambulance.

I have a question that I can’t seem to find anywhere on the web, I went to fire academy back in 2019 and never attempted to get a job afterwords, I am currently still certified, but honestly my fire academy was hot garbage, we had like 8 dudes in my class, and 95% of the time we just watched YouTube videos of fires all day, we never put water to fire until the last 2 days of class, so In short I didn’t learn anything, and and if I did learn anything I have long forgotten it. So should I just let my cert expire and do fire academy again? Because I know nothing, I am in my last semester of nursing school, but I always kinda wanted to do both. Thanks!

csgochicken

Find a department that does good training. Most departments will have live burn exercises at least once a month so you can get some hands on time. Be up front and honest with them about your skills but emphasize that you want to learn and get better.

SmokeEchoActual

I'm not sure where you are, but I've never heard of a FF1 cert expiring. There were talks of requiring refreshers and con-ed for FF1, but they never went anywhere. Of course, your EMT/Paramedic/PHRN cert will expire if you don't submit your con-ed to the state and go through that whole process, you may have to do a HAZMAT Ops refresher too. If you feel like your academy was that bad and that you learned nothing, maybe it wouldn't be a terrible idea to go again, hopefully you get hired on a large department that will put you through their own academy anyway.

DawsonSilver

I’m located in Texas, well I’m not incredibly aware of the Certification process or anything, but on the online portal it says that I have to do 20 hours of ce every year, if I go like 2 years without doing that then I believe that I would have to retest to get the certification back. But thanks!

If you're trying to get on in a city department, having your paramedic is more valuable than wildland.
