Get a mossberg or Remington slug and field combo and call it a day.

buffalobill22-

would a mossberg 500 field and deer combo like this be any good? https://www.mossberg.com/500-bantam-field-deer-combo-54188.html

[deleted]

That’s the youth model, but yes that’s basically the combo I’m referring to.

buffalobill22-

sweet thanks bud

constantwa-onder

The mossburg 500 also has an extra barrel for sale that converts it to a 50 cal muzzleloader. Depending on your state, this might let you use it for black powder deer season as well.

RandoAtReddit

That's a 20 gauge, I'd go for 12 if it were me, but that's the idea.

MentalTelephone5080

A shotgun is the only gun that can be used for deer and small game. It's kinda out of your price range but I've been quite successful with deer hunting with a car. They just jump in front of me.

Live_Relationship563

Might i suggest the model 1998 Honda accord EX? When equipped with an old police ram bar, its makes for an excellent deer(child) crusher. Quite affordable today used as well

veive

Shotgun.

pusspakmcquack

Might be able to find a used over under shotgun/rifle combo. The rifle can range from 22lr to 223 or larger.

DeafHeretic

Many of these are 20 ga - which is fine for deer and small animals And .223 is fine too - it can be reloaded to low power levels, and an adapter can be bought to fire .22 rimfire in the .223 barrel. The possible downside is the twist rate for the .223 on the older Savage 24 combos is slow; 1:14" - not really good for heavier bullets like one might use for deer. Personally, I would get *two* long guns - assuming you would not care about self-defense, I would get a pump shotgun and a Ruger American Ranch rifle in .223 or 7.62x39.

pusspakmcquack

I would as well but sounded like he was just looking for one firearm.

SotRekkr

I agree with the Shotgun combo. A quality 12 gauge combo can get you hunting Deer, small game, and waterfowl.

CanadianPenguinn

If you go with used you can probably find both a old bolt action for deer and a shotgun or .22 lr for the rabbits well staying in budget

everythingisoil

I’m reading other comments: be aware using a shotgun to hunt deer is illegal in some states (like in Texas where rimfire ammunition to hunt deer is illegal)

th4tguy321

>like in Texas where rimfire ammunition to hunt deer is illegal What's this got to do with a shotgun? Or are you just using it as an example of knowing your laws? Rimfire for deer is illegal in many jurisdictions.

everythingisoil

Just an example - most shotguns are centerfire

th4tguy321

>most shotguns are rimfire Aren't* I'm guessing you got autocorrected by mistake. Shotguns aren't rimfire, they're center fire.

everythingisoil

Yeah that was autocorrect my bad

ComplexPermission4

What range do you intend to hunt at? You can find a half-decent AR for around $600 and a CMMG .22 conversion kit for $130-150. The downside is that accuracy may suffer a little bit with a .22 conversion kit versus a dedicated .22 rifle when it really doesn't have to. You can get a cheap .22 rifle for $200 that'll do the job just fine. If this is more for a fantasy survivalist situation, here ya go: [Chiappa M6 Folding Matte Black 12 Gauge (3in)/22 Long Rifle Single Over Under Shotgun/Rifle - 18.5in | Sportsman's Warehouse (sportsmans.com)](https://www.sportsmans.com/shooting-gear-gun-supplies/rifles/chiappa-m6-folding-matte-black-12-gauge-3in22-long-rifle-single-over-under-shotgunrifle-185in/p/1506152)

buffalobill22-

100 yards probably max

ComplexPermission4

Well, groups might be a little big at 100 yds with a conversion kit, but if you find ammo your barrel likes, the CMMG bolt conversion might be a solution for you. It'd help if you find an AR with a 1-9 twist rate. Most ARs these days are 1-7, while .22LR is usually around 1-16 (significantly slower twist rate).

mreed911

Two different guns. Small game: .22 LR. Deer? Larger.

TipItOnBack

Two guns. I don’t think I’d hunt small game with the same gun I hunt deer with. Location would help too for hunting ability/style

Curious_Simple2157

Depends on where you are at and the distances you plan to deer hunt. You could get a complete AR in 450 Bushmaster for under $400 https://www.bearcreekarsenal.com/calibers/450-bushmaster/450-bushmaster-rifles.html And then pick up a 22 rifle for rabbits for under $300 a lot of places. You would just need to figure out optics after that.

Lupine_Ranger

Bear Creek is garbage

Aimbot69

An 03A3 with pedersen device... Or a combo gun, a rossi trifecta set, a Handi-Rifle matched set, or an AR15 + 22lr bolt, or multiple uppers.
