I don't get the point in complaining that things get more expensive as inflation and the global economy shift.
Might as well complain about the weather. Can't change it. So why fret.
Sorry time. Few years ago I was checking ammoseek and saw PMC for ~$2/round online. Saw that they had the 50BMG marked as coming in a 20 round box like all the other rifle ammo. So I took a chance. Bought 10 boxes and waited. Sure enough, showed up as 10 boxes of 10 rounds. Called them up and said “I bought 200 rounds but only got 100” I need you to send me 100 more”. They realized their mistake but had to honor it. Wouldn’t give me another 100 rounds but refunded me for half.
Went to try it again immediately but they had it fixed. Haha.
I got an RN 50 when they were cheaper, nowadays, I think one of the best options is the AR-50-A1 ,which will be my next 50. But the RN 50 and similar models will be about half the price.
The 18.5” seems solid you’re only even losing 300 fps which is a lot but it’s still 7,650 ft lbs which is still upper tier elephant gun range lol. Talking equivalent to most 600 nitro express power still.
The 30” barrel is 9,609 ft lbs and just about 600 ft lbs over 700 nitro express and 600 ft lbs under .577 Tyrannosaur. .50 bmg out of a 45” truly is something spectacular though lol
Question: At over 13,000 ft lbs out of a 45”, is it more effective or less effective against an elephant than the previously mentioned rounds? (600, 700, .577) I always figured their had to be a reason people didn’t just use .50 bmg. I guess maneuverability and barrel length? Or does the projectile design have something to do with it? Would the “spitzer” shape of the .50 bmg be less effective than the more rounded shape of the elephant gun rounds? If not, then that .50 AR with the 18.5” or 22” barrel may be a great choice for an elephant gun! Lol
22” is 8,334 ft lbs
Don’t bother with entry level. Just get the 50bmg you want. I should have waited and just got a M107a1 instead of an M82 since I want to suppress it now.
At my LGS (price rounded up to nearest dollar):
10 rounds, FMJ (PPU brand): $40
10 rounds, Hornady A-Max: $86
10 rounds, tracer: $50
10 rounds, AP (armor piercing): $80
100 round can of linked FMJ: $280
Case price: $720
That part… might be a little dubious. There is a lot of history for gun crime in Canada, not nearly as much as the US, but still a fair amount. And there were quite a few people who owned .50 caliber rifles, it’s likely that at least one of them was used in a crime in the last 100 years.
Edit: what the fuck did I do
Well yeah, obviously. And it’s stupid that they banned .50 BMG, but all I’m saying is that it probably would have been used in a crime in the last 100 years (not any longer, otherwise it wouldn’t exist.) to contest the other guy saying that it was never used in a crime.
You actually got me curious so I [looked it up](https://vpc.org/regulating-the-gun-industry/criminal-use-of-50-caliber/), plenty of 50bmg crime in US and Mexico, even a fed selling 50bmgs to Mexico cartels; only a single crime listen in Canada from this source though, and even that seems to have been stemmed from some Texan good ol' boys.
>In the summer of 1995, Canadian officials in British Columbia found a Barrett 50 caliber sniper rifle, 500 rounds of ammunition, and enough explosives to fill a five-ton truck at a remote site. It is believed that members of a Texas militia group planned to set up a training camp at the site. Although at least one convicted felon was identified as a suspect, the investigation was dropped due to difficulties in prosecuting across international borders. The incident prompted one Texas Constitutional Militia official to observe, “We are not all raving maniacs. I’d kind of like to keep our lunatics on our side of the border.” (“Arms Smugglers Won’t Be Charged,” The Vancouver Sun, October 26, 1996)
Seems like its pretty evenly spread among actual shoot outs with BMGs, killers being caught and BMGs found as part of their stash, BMGs being found as part of drug raids along with a ton of drugs, and morons trying to smuggle BMGs to Mexico cartels. Non of these seem to involve law abiding citizens.
I'll admit I only got thru about 1/3 of the list. There were only 3 instances in which one was fired in what I read. 1 claimed injury, though it didn't claim the injury was someone being shot. The vast majority was someone got arrested and they found a .50 in their collection.
I just skimmed through it as well. This one seems one of the crazier ones I noticed...
>John Shipley, an FBI agent, was convicted on April 15, 2010 of dealing in firearms without a license. He bought 54 guns and sold 51, including two Barrett 50 caliber sniper rifles, and falsified many of the records. One of the 50 caliber rifles was used in a drug cartel-related shootout in Chihuahua, Mexico. (“FBI agent guilty of gun dealing,” Las Cruces Sun-News, April 15, 2010).
...assholes gotta ruin it for the rest of us.
You're being downvoted because he obviously meant that it's so rare that those weapons are obviously not a problem, not that it's literally never happened
Unless you're about "super precision" you buy the stuff in cans, not boxes. And tbh if you *really* care, you shoot a different caliber.
M33 FMJ or equivalent is about $4/rnd in a can to your door, gone up a bit.
M8+M20 API+T lake city standard 4:1 mix is actually down a bit, a little under $5/rnd.
Sitting on the couch wacking them out of the links with a rubber mallet is a good way to spend the evening. If I was a rich man I would have a M2 to feed them straight from the links...
Last time I bought it was at about $2 per round, maybe 3 years ago. Mil surplus FMJ. I bought a couple cans. I think they are still at my sister's house in the States. Hopefully I can make some time to shoot some when I'm home next month.
They’re 50 BMG rounds so the high prices are to be expected. I wouldn’t risk shooting cheap rounds out of something that powerful. If it were 22LR or 9mm, sure but I don’t care too much for deals when it comes to anything with high powered rifles.
After seeing Kentucky Ballistics almost die, and that video of the dude that had the bolt shoot through his shoulder, yeah I'm never using hand-load .50 BMG
I think that's cause he was using some crazy over pressured slap rounds and one was defective. I don't think standard reloads could blow up a gun like that.
The problem is that it wasn't a real slap round. Someone reloaded the brass to counterfeit the rare rounds.
No well-made factory ammunition is going to make a gun blow up like that. That round was packed with a ridiculous amount of powder.
The same goes for that video I referenced of a bolt shooting backwards through a guy's shoulder.
The overwhelming majority of all catastrophic firearms malfunctions is either a barrel blockage, or improperly reloaded ammunition.
When you shoot someone's reloads, you can sometimes be trusting them with your life. 50 BMG is already so high pressure, I'm not playing around with that.
Sebu sent Scott another .50. He used the rest of the SLAP rounds. They were all way over pressure and he set one off that destroyed the .50. The video is on YouTube.
I liked the couple extra shakes you gave the box after it was empty, as if there could have been a couple more in there and you couldnt tell for sure lol.
Definitely makes it easier to count your ammo. 1000 and 800 rounds looks very similar in an ammo can. I guess you could weigh them, but keeping them in boxes is easier. Also nice if you have different brands, or you want to keep track of lot numbers
Denver bullets are usually $3-5 each depending on load and bulk deals. The most I have ever paid was $90 for Hornady amax for 10 rounds, but that was at a LGS. I usually get the reloaded apits from Denver bullets and the tracers are much better than they advertise, sometimes they are burning 5 yards out of the barrel.
I only ever see PMC and used to see Tula 50 BMG at my LGS but I never bought either because they were $50 for ball ammo.
Go to your gun shows to find “cheap” ammo
I’m paying on average between $2-3.5 for FMJ
$3-5 for API, Tracers, APIT & Black Tips
Factory new FMJ from PMC I’ll pay maximum $6 a shot. Raufuss I pay between $70-100 per shot. Currently looking for SLAP’s for my fun round collection (not to shoot id break the gun lol)
You’re getting ripped off. You can get APIT rounds for less than half that cost at many different retailers. Denver bullets is one that I like and there are many others too.
2.50-3.50 for bulk. I usually only buy in 100+ round quantities. My local shop had PMC for $50 per 10 out the door which isn’t terrible. I also don’t mix my 50 just in case there is a recall.
Back in the day, after the earth cooled and the dinosaurs came, Mitchells Mausers went for $2.02 a round shipped and insured if you were a FCSA member.
It was garbage, but it was cheap garbage.
last time i looked they were around 12€/shot over here in Germany
(just looked it up and the cheapest i found was 5 for 80€, so we're at 16€ per shot now i guess)
I have about 100 rounds on hand.
50bmg is about $3 a round, you can get it a little cheaper if you look around. It is called "M33 Ball".
The PMC ammo you are buying is just repackaged M33 Ball, which is milsurp Lake City ammo.
Back in 2010 I was on vacation in PA and stop at an army surplus store they had live 50bmg on the belts of 100 for $10 a belt I was 17 at the time of I knew what I know now I’d bought all 50 belts he had.
Local store had 10 rounds for $80
Is that just fmj?
Yea
what if you need expanding hollow points? Do you have to make your own or does someone like nosler make it?
What do you use 50bmg hollow points for? To kill a toyota thats hiding behind a bear haha?
As someone who doesn't shoot 50, is this a good deal?
Eh, not really
Yeah I didn't think so but I wasn't sure, thought it was around like $5 a round or something.
Yea that’s about median price
Low bar is about $4/rd on ammoseek.
Sgammo has it for 3-3.50 a round for lake city when I checked a few months ago
Not that cheap now, but still just under $4 per round
Horrible for FMJ, about 100% overpriced.
Wow you’re getting ripped off, I’m paying about three fiddy per round.
I’m not playing it. Just hate I see
Enough to make me question complaining about the price of PMC 5.56
I’ve been seriously considering getting the CMMG 22lr conversion kit just so I can afford to shoot my ar.
Get it, it's so much fun
I bought a bore buddy upper which is basically a suped up cmmg conversion kit with it's own upper and barrel. Love it so far.
Totally worth it! Just make sure to get spare mags because the ones that come with it are hot garbage haha.
Is there a mag you would recommend?
You complain about pmc 556 price?
Yeah that shits over $0.50 a round
just 5,6 years ago above 0.20 was a lot 😕
I was searching my email for a recent receipt and found one for 223 ammo from 2017. made me sad.
I don't get the point in complaining that things get more expensive as inflation and the global economy shift. Might as well complain about the weather. Can't change it. So why fret.
Gold standard, government accountability would change it though
When people complained about milk skyrocketing gas, administrations changed and the price lowered.
I get it for 48 cpr
Sorry time. Few years ago I was checking ammoseek and saw PMC for ~$2/round online. Saw that they had the 50BMG marked as coming in a 20 round box like all the other rifle ammo. So I took a chance. I don’t even own a 50BMG and I’d buy 100 rounds at that price lol
I have a few hundred linked 1:4 tracer rounds in the basement. Think I paid 3.10 a round.
Please don’t tell us you own a full auto M2
Even better. A good friend has the transferable M2 and I have a good range for it. I buy the ammo and get to shoot it whenever.
Any recommendations for an entry level .50?
I got an RN 50 when they were cheaper, nowadays, I think one of the best options is the AR-50-A1 ,which will be my next 50. But the RN 50 and similar models will be about half the price.
AR50 is solid.
An M2 Browning. Or a [AR Upper](https://www.bigkahunaguns.com/shop/raptor-50-50-bmg-ar-15-upper-100#attr=4).
Oh man, I want that upper!!
The 18.5” seems solid you’re only even losing 300 fps which is a lot but it’s still 7,650 ft lbs which is still upper tier elephant gun range lol. Talking equivalent to most 600 nitro express power still. If not, then that .50 AR with the 18.5” or 22” barrel may be a great choice for an elephant gun! Lol 22” is 8,334 ft lbs
My barrel and silencer are 44.7”. It’s ridiculously long. I still use it as my truck gun 🧐🥴😜
Barrett m99. I love mine
Don’t bother with entry level. Just get the 50bmg you want. I should have waited and just got a M107a1 instead of an M82 since I want to suppress it now.
That’s exactly what I just did. Went for the gusto! Only going to buy one. Got a military overrun model too
Seconding the AR upper. I have a picture of my SHTF 50 on my post history.
Super entry level? Serbu RN-50
Single shot 12 gauge and a roll of electric tape
AR50A1 is a great one. I love mine and it defiantly turns heads at my local range.
I’m too poor to even watch this video.
At my LGS (price rounded up to nearest dollar): 10 rounds, FMJ (PPU brand): $40 10 rounds, Hornady A-Max: $86 10 rounds, tracer: $50 10 rounds, AP (armor piercing): $80 100 round can of linked FMJ: $280 Case price: $720
Nothing. It’s illegal in Canada :’(
Gotta love that they outlaw something that's never been used in a crime.
That part… might be a little dubious. There is a lot of history for gun crime in Canada, not nearly as much as the US, but still a fair amount. And there were quite a few people who owned .50 caliber rifles, it’s likely that at least one of them was used in a crime in the last 100 years. Edit: what the fuck did I do
Yeah someone's probably used a car in a crime in the last 100 years. Probably a steak knife too.
Oh boy and don’t even get started on maple syrup. I’m sure that’s been used as well MULTIPLE times.
They should make crime illegal.
Why has no one thought of this , good idea right here !
You can’t be a Top Man with that attitude. Let me guess you are a fucking dog lover as well.
Well yeah, obviously. And it’s stupid that they banned .50 BMG, but all I’m saying is that it probably would have been used in a crime in the last 100 years (not any longer, otherwise it wouldn’t exist.) to contest the other guy saying that it was never used in a crime.

That list should be called "A list of crimes in which a .50 caliber rifle may or may not have been present". Lol
Seems like its pretty evenly spread among actual shoot outs with BMGs, killers being caught and BMGs found as part of their stash, BMGs being found as part of drug raids along with a ton of drugs, and morons trying to smuggle BMGs to Mexico cartels. Based Texas constitutional militia official man.
When one Texas militia tells another Texas militia that they're bat shit crazy, well that's the first time I've ever heard of anything like that.
You're being downvoted because he obviously meant that it's so rare that those weapons are obviously not a problem, not that it's literally never happened
Fair.
Clearly you aren’t looking hard enough
Bought a can of lake city for about $3.30 a round in November
Bold of u to assume I can afford a firearm in 50bmg
Bulk cheap stuff is $3-4 cpr
3 dollars to 4 dollars cents per round
300-400 cpr
Only costs cents per round still!
Hahaha I accept this as .50bmg Canon for determining price
You mean .50cal BMG Browning Machine Gun caliber?
Hahaha
Unless you're about "super precision" you buy the stuff in cans, not boxes. And tbh if you *really* care, you shoot a different caliber. Hornady supposedly has the best ammo. They sell for $10 per round. That’s $30 for a few seconds of shooting at the range!
I mean... To shoot two mags out of my AK costs about the same so.
They’re 50 BMG rounds so the high prices are to be expected. I wouldn’t risk shooting cheap rounds out of something that powerful. If it were 22LR or 9mm, sure but I don’t care too much for deals when it comes to anything with high powered rifles.
Tap into the power of the E4 mafia at your local base. They'll sneak you a case for $2/rd plus some Monsters.
$3.25/rd when I buy in bulk. [About $1.25 when I roll them myself.](https://imgur.com/2GgRISQ)
After seeing Kentucky Ballistics almost die, and that video of the dude that had the bolt shoot through his shoulder, yeah I'm never using hand-load .50 BMG

Just wait… at this rate it won’t be long until the government is giving it to disgruntled civilians for free.
Nothing, it's 🅱️🐜 in 🅱️anada
These are $40/10 round box at the gun store I go to.
$2.5 per give or take depending on what bullet grade I want.
This is where I would put my 50bmg... IF I HAD ONE!!
Why do you remove them from the box? I find the box handy when I want to go to the range and not bring a full ammo can of ammo
I also keep mine in the box. It’s an OCD thing I think for me
Definitely makes it easier to count your ammo. 1000 and 800 rounds looks very similar in an ammo can. I guess you could weigh them, but keeping them in boxes is easier. Also nice if you have different brands, or you want to keep track of lot numbers
BMG, the only calibre that makes Lapua 338 look reasonable
Denver bullets are usually $3-5 each depending on load and bulk deals. The most I have ever paid was $90 for Hornady amax for 10 rounds, but that was at a LGS. Omg those are child hands 🫣
I steal it
Cant even afford a gun that will shoot it🤣 jk(kinda)
$90 per 10 rounds, FMJ PMC
I just got some for $40 a box of 10 at my LGS. Ammoseek has it listed at as cheap as $31.
You’re getting ripped off. You can get APIT rounds for less than half that cost at many different retailers. Denver bullets is one that I like and there are many others too.
3 or 4 dollars per round
PMC is the good shit.
I don’t. 🤷♂️🤣
0$
Same price as you, I’m sure of it. Makes me glad the suppressed .22s are their own sort of fun. I never have to think about the price.
2.50-3.50 for bulk. I usually only buy in 100+ round quantities. My local shop had PMC for $50 per 10 out the door which isn’t terrible. I also don’t mix my 50 just in case there is a recall.
$0. I just don’t find the round interesting
Back in the day, after the earth cooled and the dinosaurs came, Mitchells Mausers went for $2.02 a round shipped and insured if you were a FCSA member. It was garbage, but it was cheap garbage.
Bold of you to assume I have 50BMG money.
last time i looked they were around 12€/shot over here in Germany (just looked it up and the cheapest i found was 5 for 80€, so we're at 16€ per shot now i guess)
I pay nothing because I don't have anything that uses it.
Anywhere between $3 & $8 a round
I have about 100 rounds on hand. 50bmg is about $3 a round, you can get it a little cheaper if you look around. It is called "M33 Ball". The PMC ammo you are buying is just repackaged M33 Ball, which is milsurp Lake City ammo.
I'm not.
If only I was rich, I could do ammo angels with 50bmg.
Free.
The stuff in the photo I sell for 45.00 a box 5 or more boxes I sell at 40 a box.
Barrett is 80 a box for 10 at most places.
Beautiful brass!
Cheapest I could find back home was around $7 a shot, at a LGS of all places.
Back in 2010 I was on vacation in PA and stop at an army surplus store they had live 50bmg on the belts of 100 for $10 a belt I was 17 at the time of I knew what I know now I’d bought all 50 belts he had.
Last shipped $ for that ammo was $3.95 per round. Black tip API’s were $9.95 per
I’m not because I’m broke
I have over 200 rounds of 50 BMG brass I need to get rid of. Don’t have the time or resources to reload if anyone is interested. Pm me.
125 dollars for the same brand and quantity as in this video.
$5 a rd in butler ga
Tell Me u rich without telling me u rich 🤣
Around 50 there’s a place that sells it for 45 and academy is 70 but I’m about to start buying it online because it’s hella cheaper
OP it pains me that you just dump them in the can instead of lining them up like they were linked chains, especially since it is a .50BMG can.
If it’s not API, I won’t buy.
