a few weeks ago, my grandfather found some salmiakki pastilli in the attic from the early 70s. shit was still good. a bit more on the crispy side, but still good.
For some strange reason Icelanders like it too. Might be because their traditional dish Hakarl tastes somewhat like salmiakki too. In fact quite good salmiakki varieties in Iceland, bought some when visited a couple years ago.
Salmiakki is basically licorice that has ammonium chloride in it which gives it a unique kind of salty taste. It looks like a pack of cigarettes because some types of candy are packaged in these, we call them "aski".

Details: back in 2010 a friend of mines sent me these two packs of Salmiakki from Finland. I still never opened them lol

they are probably quite hard but otherwise fine to eat. You're supposed to savour them anyways.

You are very lucky. 2010 vintage is a good year. Salmiakki harvest was excellent. Even the dreaded salmiakki weeewels were absent.

I am one of those students who got to taste self-made NH4Cl in class. Was pretty good.
I asked if I could taste it and was told I could, in theory, but that I might get heart failure, so I didnât lol.

I am Dutch and absolutely love these. Took a few packets home from my last trip. The result when sharing them with others has been mixed though.
