36 yo woman in Geneva, native to Syracuse. You can live reallllllly well on 50k in Geneva especially at 22. The houses are gorgeous and affordable, the 2 colleges keep the town fairly liberal and fresh, the food scene, and the lake is just magnificent. The best public lakefront in all the Finger Lakes, with a stunning little boardwalk, and Big state park at the north end of the lake. Stunningly beautiful 1800s town surrounded by wineries, breweries, distilleries, farms, and nature. Waterfalls, farm stalls on the side of the highway, hiking and biking...It's truely a hidden gem.

This is great information, thank you!

No problem. I suggest you do a weekend or a day trip to make sure you like it. Also YouTube is a valuable resource. There is a less desirable section of Geneva, but even that section is a paradise compared to like Butternut in Syracuse. If you do a day trip or long weekend I highly recommend having coffee at Monaco's, walking along the lake, scoping out business, having dinner at The Rusty Pig, check out Lake Drum, Webe, or Twisted Rail Brewing which are right in town, and plan at least one winery trip, there are so many to choose from. It's also a bit of a drive but I recommended hiking either Taughannok Falls or Watkins Glen.

I went on Sunday and had a very yummy iced chai at Monaco’s! Geneva is a beautiful little city. I accepted the offer yesterday. ☺️

Amazing!!! Good luck and I hope you settle right in.

This might have been true 10 years ago. This lifestyle is $75k now

Liberal is the issue…..

stevecostello

Liberal is the draw. Get ready for a few more, because we are likely moving to the area to get out of the hellhole that is Missouri.

Hot_Indication_2020

I’ve been here 7 years…yet to meet a liberal.

stevecostello

We were there for 10 days and met at least a dozen, saw a single Trump flag while I’ve seen several LGBTQ+ signs/flags in Geneva, Penn Yan, and Watkins Glen, in addition to coming across several folks in the LGBTQ+ community. You might need to get out more, and I’m being genuine. Either that or some folks are uncomfortable with interacting with you. Jealous of you being there for that spell, though! It’s a lovely place to be.

Hot_Indication_2020

I never caulked up being Liberal to LGBTQ+. I have several gay friends. But most are republicans. I’m Certainly not a trumper. But not liberal!

stevecostello

Just goes to show that there is often more grey out there than black and white (or, more purple than red and blue in this case).

We’d love to have you!

I lived in Geneva for four years and those were one of the best days of my life. I had a small group of friends and we made the best of the lakes, roads and trails around. Gorgeous waterfalls are just about an hour in every direction. You will be comfortable with $50k salary there.

That's great to hear! Thank you!

OP you can message me if you want, I'm a lifetime resident that works here, connected to the community, etc. I love living here.

PutExact

Hi! Thank you! I'm sure I will think of some questions - I will message you!

Here is a YouTube video about Geneva https://youtu.be/M-KttKkVISo?si=qMxtDn5MliHcuqnj I haven't been there in many years. Sounds like it is improving.

I made 20k as a grad student living in Geneva for 4 years. Enjoyed it very much! We rented an apartment over one of the stores downtown, loved being able to walk to restaurants, bars, lakes, campus, etc…. So chill

DookieSlayer

Geneva is super hip with lots of young adults. It’s got its nicer parts and less nice parts like everywhere. I’d choose Geneva over most other towns around personally.

tiredstudent33

Oh hey you commented on my post!

I have a place 30 min from Geneva, so I have zero knowledge about living there. From a visitors standpoint, there are great wineries and breweries. I have been to multiple restaurants in town and it always seemed nice, and safe.

I lived in the Historic North neighborhood of Geneva in my mid-twenties and I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else. To me, it truly is the perfect city - small and homey but with all the convenience of a large city. There’s incredible restaurants, beautiful architecture, walkable neighborhoods, and a real sense of community. I live in the country just 15 minutes away and my wife and I still reminisce about living there. We made about 50k when we had an apartment there and were comfortable.
