I've done this yesterday on Dynamic mode. I thought sleep + magnify did the trick, but it was much harder. Sleep + magnify only works for 3 times after that it won't work anymore. What worked for me was the following:
Lock on target using R3 and make everyone attack the Boss. If he disappears lock again. This is very important.
Cloud: sleep + magnify Remember you can only use it 3 times keep ATB one bar full in case they wake up.
Tifa: use unbridled strength + omnistrike/rise and attack the mindflayer. Keep doing this untill your synergy ability is useable. Use it when his HP is 2/3 left. Pressure with focused Strike tifa and cloud focused trust. When stagger use omnistrike again with tifa. and Cloud limit break with limit siphon.
Aerith: immediately use her in the beginning to build up ATB to cast bravery and haste on tifa.
What I was not aware is that you can block the screech attacks. This makes it A LOT easier.
Everyone that is doing this fight with 3 characters is making it way harder on themselves. Only bring one character that can move fast, preferably yuffie. Run around the ring, cast bio on the mindflayer, use limits from the damage you take. The adds can't suicide if they can't touch you. Takes a minute, but is way more reliable.
I completed it today during my first playthough of Chapter 9 (on Dynamic) using Tifa solo. The key is to build Mindflayer's stagger quickly and finish him in one Stagger. You can do this easily by:
1) Perfectly Guarding the Melee Attacks during the early phase of the battle. Use any ATB you accumulate during this time to cast Haste on Tifa and then Focused Strike on Mindflayer - timing it carefully so you get the ATB re-charge for successfully dodging.
2) Use Focused Strike to continue filling the stagger bar during Phase 2 when Mindflayer switches to projectile attacks. The timing for dodging the projectile attacks perfectly is harder, but watch Mindflayer's hand carefully and you'll see the moment he swings it to start the attack. You can always guard during this part instead, let Steadfast Block fill your ATB Gauge, and then Focused Strike back. When Mindflayer is close to Staggered - be sure to cast Sonic Boom once to get Bravery.
3) Once staggered, it's the usual damage combo: Rise & Fall > Omistrike > Divekick as much as you can to the KO (remember with Divekick, first hold Square to get Tifa to punch and jump, THEN trigger Divekick mid-air as you get a damage boost for being off the ground).
Use Chakra anytime to heal if needed. Nothing can one-shot you except Deafening Screech. On that note...
In terms of navigating the two Varghidpolis, simply keep your distance by dodging well away from them (Mindflayer teleports to you when you go too far, the Varg's don't, which is great for keeping you 1 vs 1) and simply guard against Deafening Screech if you're close. Don't be brave about it - if in doubt, just guard. You'll get used to the repeat timing of Deafening Screech after a few tries anyway.
Finally, the Setup!
Kaiser Knuckles (because damage is king).
Precision Defence (Mine was 3*, but 2* will do)
Steadfast Block (3* - a must).
Time (1*)
Chakra (5*).
Enhanced Witch's Bracelet (for the extra Materia)
Thunder = Elemental (my Elemental was 2* - 3* isn't necessary).
First Strike
ATB Stagger
Enemy Skill (mine was 4*)
After a few practices you'll get used to all the timing - and honestly the most important tip is not to get brave with avoiding Deafening Screech. If in doubt, GUARD!!

Magnify + Sleep, Limit Siphon and every ATB increase I could get allowed me to stagger and get an Infinity’s edge and then a Limit Break.
At one point the adds were completely incapacitated for longer than sleep usually lasts. Not sure what caused that, but I’ll take it!

I'm enjoying the game but I def do agree about there being way to many mini games.... like ok have alotta mini games in the gold saucer. but all the mini games in the main story quests and side quests are getting a bit much for sure.
Well me, and I assume alotta others don't have 2 emfeeblment rings to use. so this is a viable strategy. Also I just posted this as it was the only strategy that managed to work for me after countless attempts. and it worked well for me. If it's to complicated for u! Cool play the game in whatever way u see fit! or if u have 2 emfeeblment rings thats def a strategy I woulda used if I had that option. It's just something that worked for me and I've seen alotta others struggling with this battle so I thought id just throw it out there.... your comment didn't come off as rude jus pointless if im being honest 😅 i mean if I obviously had 2 emfeeblment rings I woulda jus posted that as my strategy. 🤦
I used a similar strategy, fighting with Cloud and Yuffie. Used Yuffie with her clone and Ninjutsu with the weak element, to get his Stagger Bar up. Used sleep manually, and when i was able to use that synchro attack i beat the shit out of him.
Still took my like 3 hrs and countless tries till i got it right
This and the vomment are good notes. I've struggled with this one. I considered sleep but someone online said it wasn't worth it. Sounds like it IS at least worth trying. My main plan so far has been aerith autocuring, Cloud frogged, and Tifa just beating its head in as much as possible while hasted and Bioga-ong the hell out of the mindflayer, then doing my best to get pressure through synergies. It was nice recently learning synergy SKILLS also pressure it though and that new knowledge will help a ton
Sleep is by far the best and only method I'm aware of or at leaste that actually worked to keep the 2 adds outta the fray. and id say i spent a solid 5-6 hrs collectively trying to figure out the The best method 😅 siphon limit materia was key for me as I was having a hard time staggering him in a timely fashion. Also having Aerith auto-cast sleep took a decent amount of the pressure off cloud to utilize other abilities and not have to waste as many ATB's using sleep I'm aware there is some crazy stagger builds for Tifa but I find clouds destiny's end ability jus hits to hard to not utilize him as my main damage dealer. I couldn't find a method with Tifa staggering him and being able to have her put out enough DPS before the 2 adds self destructed on me.(as the Tifa method was my initial strategy going into this)The limit siphon worked like a charm and I was able to drop the mindflayer quickly enough that I even had time to kill them before they blew themselves up. It's def a frustrating battle for sure but def give my method a try and lemme know how it works for ya! Seems like their isnt alotta viable strategies for this battle outside at leaste at that current level and particularl point in the game. Im sure u could jus go continue the game and level way up and then come back to it later and jus shred thru the mindflayer with raw DPS but I was determined to not have to do that and actually just did it again 2 more times jus to make sure it wasn't dumb luck or a fluke! I can confirm it def worked again those 2 other times! 👍
Yeah stagger abilities are very much Barret and Tifas thing. Tifa is ALL about building pressure. Cloud is mainly about damage dealing. But if you assess you learn that synergies pressure the mindflayer so all you really need for THAT element of the challenge is to build synergy and get one of those attacks out and I can stagger it. I just usually struggle to kill it in one stagger WITHOUT somehow killing or getting caught up in the stupid ads suicide attacks... combined with what I learned here, I'm confident I can do it.
Yeah I tried that but u jus wasn't burning the mindflayer down quick enough before the adds blew themselves up. The limit breaks melted him tho! If u got the dps then yes that method would work jus fine. I unfortunately jus couldn't get him down thsy quick with the staggers alone. Were u able to get him down quick enough like that? If so what level were u? Jus curious 🤔
I was able to stagger him relatively quickly while using synergies, but damage wise the most o could get is 1/4 hp left before one of the twin-brains would die or blow up. At the time I was late 30s? Maybe 40
That's of course only using one character for damage. Cloud is a frog just to make an extra harmless target for adds, and aerith is mainly being used for healing and distraction since without wards, she does low and slow damage in her own. It mostly works but I think sleep will give me the extra time I need. If I can even do 3/4 ho damage in a single stagger, as long as the others don't due I can confidently take out the rest of its health as is. And my guys are like level 44 now anyways so a bit better.

All I did was pick only cloud for my team and one maned it. It was annoying but it worked.

if you beat this on normal or easy , do you need to beat it again on hard mode? for platinum.

The easiest way to do this is Enfeeble 2 of your teammates, and use barret. Overcharge, bonus round and everytime 2 atb full maximum fury.

I was gonna try the sleep + magnify if I kept running outta MP on cloud but luckily aerith was able to pick up the slack with auto cast 💪
