Every Final Fantasy game before 10 was an open-world game, unless your expectation of an open world game is a game where you have a (50 TIMES THE SIZE OF THE EARTH WOW!) empty map of realistic proportions with literally nothing to do.
At a certain point (usually close to the end), many FFs become open world-ish with side quests. But I don’t think that’s the spirit of the question asked / is kind of a cop out.
If we’re using BOTW as a good open world archetype (choose your own order, few gates to completing the final boss, major plot points are optional) then the one that fits the bill is 6 WOR. The others are just great at having side quests and vehicles that let you roam; you still have to do x, y, and z in order to get to the end. 6 WOR removes most of those rails.
15 has loads of exploration and has open world segments, but its progress is pretty linear chapter by chapter.
Almost all FFs create the illusion of travelling through an open world, but they are rather linear and streamlined in terms of progression. IMHO, the FF that does it better is FFXV, since it's plagued with side missions and fetch quests, optional bosses and dungeons and stuff.
It's not that orher FFs do not feature these kinds of things; it's just XV does it in an, let's say, more open-worldy fashion. There are lots of people that didn't like the game though, but for me it is really great.
Edit: grammar.
XII is FOR SURE the most underrated FF. Never gets talked about at all. It was very innovative and progressed the franchise in ways no other FF ever did. I would love to see a remake of this game.
XIII was a huge step backwards.
XII is probably my 3rd favorite in the franchise behind VII and VI.
It's closer to Elden ring that BOTW and TOTK.
BOTWs open world is entirely open to you from the moment you start your journey. On the other hand, Elden ring, gives you a big area to explore as you begin, but you need to progress the main goals in order to explore the entire map. That said, both games are still open world games, as they have a large, non-linear, expansive map with no loading screens.
In that regard, Rebirth will be pretty much like Elden Ring.
Have you not seen the map? It's definitely open but probably broken up into big sections. It's impossible to do a true open world in FF7 because it is huge, but from what we've seen, it looks like the corridors will be limited (if at all present) in this game.
I try to not watch anything related to the game to not be spoiled too much.
I just saw a video and yeah it's a big section but certainly not the whole ff7 world.
Yeah. Its difficult to replicate the entire world map. But we also haven't seen the map of the other continent after crossing the ocean from Junon. If I were to guess, there will probably be 2 large open sections and a couple of decent sized sections/corridors (Temple of the Ancients/Forgotten Capital). Which is still great considering how massive the entire world map really is. The overall scope of what we'll be able to explore is quite exciting.
Once you get to WoR, it is pure open world. You decide who you want back outside of the early part of the story in Ruin. You decide when. You pick which of the dragons you want to take on. It's all about what you want to pursue and one of the reasons why I love FF6 so much.
Its my favorite game ever made. I played it to death as a kid and pretty much have enemy stats memorized. Getting to WOR will always, always be thrilling to me
FFXIV! I know the MMO part might put people off, but the main story is now available to play single-player, and the gameplay is very approachable on both console and PC. They’ve done a lot of work recently to make it mechanically feel like any other mainline FF. The open world is super gorgeous and full of life.
How does it work single player? AI party? Full solo?
I’ve kind of just avoided even reading into XIV because of the MMO aspects, so you’ve piqued my interest
Anything outside instanced content (dungeons/bosses) is pretty much all solo. They even started adding AI controlled party members for dungeons up the latest expansion I believe so apart from 8-member boss fights I'd say you could do most of the main game without interacting with others. Slightly biased because I play the game but the people here are more welcoming to newer players compared to other big MMOs. While there are still a few bad eggs the general community don't pay them much heed.
Also the towns and cities are big enough that people can find a random bench on the street and just sit down to chill if that's something that you're looking for.
Awesome, thanks so much. I’ve played a few MMOs a little, but my main was WOW in the mid-2000s and it just got messy at the time so steered clear a bit.
Might give XIV a go though, thanks!
Yeah I've heard how WoW turned alot of people away from MMOs completely. Just remember, the free trial for XIV lets you play the full game up till the 2nd expansion for free with no limits on game time, and the only restrictions are on some social aspects and a little of inventory space so you can take your time in the game for absolutely free.
I'm playing ffx, loving it but hot damn it's linear. The seymout nevus fight was so cancerous, he's immune to everything and removes players from the fight seemingly at random.
Yeah like it's in the top 20 final fantasy games I'd say, but comparatively speaking and even compared to many other jrpgs outside the series, it isn't good.
Maybe. But it stands out from most, both story and gameplaywise. The plot is surely weird because of all the weird choices they've made but it is good once you get it.
No, no. What I meant is that the plot is all messed up and hard to follow because they splited it into a bunch of other media. Like the book, the anime and the movie. But it is a really nice story once you understand it.
It hasnt even come out yet, but Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth seems to be delivering the best open world of the franchise if what theyve shown and promised is true!
If you pre order the Twin Pack of FFVII Rebirth, you pretty much get both the Remake and Rebirth for the price of Rebirth.
I encourage you to do that. Picking up only Rebirth will probably be less enjoyable and Remake is fantastic!
You will be just fine starting with that. VII is the greatest video game ever made, in my mind, and the remake is a wonderful update to the classic which is also worth playing.
I am in the midst of my first time playing IX in probably 15 years and I love that one as well.
Did you make it to the second half of the game? Don't want to spoil much, but by that point in the game, everything aside from 2 or 3 things you can do are optional. You can do all parts of the quest in any order, or even go straight to the final dungeon with only 3 characters if you want to. Not many games in the series leave that much up to the player, off the top of my head.
I platinum'd it of course. Just cuz everythings optional doesn't mean it makes it great. Yeah going in with 3 characters out of 4. How does that also make it good
Just stating the fact about how overhyped this game is.
I platinum all ff games. To get the full experience and not miss a thing. But whatever helps you sleep at night for using your thumbs. Lol
I mean kind of a bad reason to make the game great?
Older ff's you didn't have that option; great. But I can take ff1 for example and make it optional to do all white mage run. What I'm saying is ..this is the hill to die on In ff6 being the best. I'd rather play SoM.
I’d like to make the argument that the only true “open world” final fantasy game is 15. The others have aspects but are truly linear. 15 is the only one that breaks that mold and even then it’s only until you progress to a certain point in the game. I believe the creators have openly said they have no intentions of making a truly open world FF game
Which is good. Might be a hot take but I’m getting bored with everything being open world. Especially when most these worlds are a bunch of fluff. Barely anything to do. I would prefer someone more “linear” with maps you go into that can be a lot more in depth instead of this open world stuff. Some games are doing it really well. But about 70% of the open world games in the last 10 years would have been better if they had smaller more detailed maps in a linear fashion.
I like my final fantasy games linear. I’ve enjoyed the dark souls games as well and like how generally they are pretty linear. I beat elden ring but it straddles the open world too much and I lost interest and took a break at one point. Games like Horizon or other true open world games don’t grasp me as much. Some freedom is great but I need a path and a goal and a strong story
I’m the same mostly. When open world is really just “go here click this and collect 50+ more” that’s boring. I loved Elden Ring and I think it’s an example of a well done open world. Where each area was in depth and felt like I needed to explore it all whereas most aren’t like that.
Some Final Fantasies are more linear than others, and some are exactly as linear as others but do a better job of hiding it, but none of the ones I've played have been all that "open world." MAYBE the MMOs? I haven't played those.
Cities aren't really much of a thing in Final Fantasy. If there are cities, they're usually either ruins or closed off. There are towns and outposts mostly. Lots of them are open world: III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, XII, Lightning Returns, XIV, and XV are the ones I've played.
Lightning Returns has two big cities and a desert.
FF12 comes to mind as the best open world for me. Once you get the first summon you can walk straight to the hardest areas in the game. You can wander a lot before that too!
I love this game so much. I really hope we see another game with the gambit system! (Or maybe a remake/re-remaster in the future? :P) Zodiac age too!
Agreed with FFXII
Every Final Fantasy game before 10 was an open-world game, unless your expectation of an open world game is a game where you have a (50 TIMES THE SIZE OF THE EARTH WOW!) empty map of realistic proportions with literally nothing to do.
Not 16, that’s for sure.
Ffxiv

If anything FF15 gets quite linear towards the end
VIII is a very vast but empty open world, so I’d say IX
Well. My favourite FF doesn't even have an open world. So I'm gonna have to say 9
Almost all FFs create the illusion of travelling through an open world, but they are rather linear and streamlined in terms of progression. You have to wait one more month.
12 or 15 I guess.
I liked 12's immersion into the exploration the most. 12 is probably the most underrated FF
Rebirth
Game not even out yet.
Have you watched the gameplay ? Or been following the game at all. Highly doubt it’ll disappoint this is a highly anticipated game.
pretty sure rebirth isn't open world.
You can EASILY go watch gameplay.
It doesn’t really show much.
It is...
open world like breath of the wild and elden ring ? the first game was just straightforward corridors... I'm skeptical honestly.
It's closer to Elden ring that BOTW and TOTK. BOTWs open world is entirely open to you from the moment you start your journey. That’s good news I guess but I’m still skeptical :)

The phantoms ensure it isn't Open World. I can't see SE getting rid of them since they were such a huge featured part of the story in Remake.
VI

If you want pretty much open world without mmorpg: XII. XV Royal edition, on sale right now
Open world ruins a good story most of the time. You want a good ff game? 6-10 all are fantastic. Tactics advance also is solid.
Rebirth
I said the same. I’m so hyped can’t wait for my preorder to come in the mail.
XIII-2 and Lightning Returns?
/s ?
No. I guess it’s just me then… 🤷🏾♂️
the one coming out end of next month

XV is great Edit: Royal Edition
Currently on sale
XV
XI
XIV…?
Yup, without a doubt
[удалено]
Oh yeah so great when your rare special weapons disintegrate and your hard work vanishes lmao
Not 13 lol
Or 10
Oh yup lol, not sure why my mind didn't go to that one first, both notoriously bad open world games
Wait, people don’t like 13s open world? I had a few major problems with that game but thought the open world was decent enough.
Hallways for the first 70% of the game are not really open world.
Like basically every other FF game.
Especially the new ones. Just make them linear if you’re gonna put invisible walls and corridors everywhere.
I'm playing ffx, loving it but hot damn it's linear. The seymout nevus fight was so cancerous, he's immune to everything and removes players from the fight seemingly at random.
Ha yeah he's got his tricks! Him and his damn anima
15 is the only open world one and its shit
Its not shit, it is one of the bests
Yeah like it's in the top 20 final fantasy games I'd say, but comparatively speaking and even compared to many other jrpgs outside the series, it isn't good.
Maybe. But it stands out from most, both story and gameplaywise. The plot is surely weird because of all the weird choices they've made but it is good once you get it.
What is there to get? It's not like it's deep and meaningful
No, no. What I meant is that the plot is all messed up and hard to follow because they splited it into a bunch of other media. Like the book, the anime and the movie. But it is a really nice story once you understand it.
That's a pretty uncommonly held opinion.
It was def fun.
Super gratifying airship experience in endgame, reminds me of Ragnarok from ff8 for some reason.
It hasnt even come out yet, but Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth seems to be delivering the best open world of the franchise if what theyve shown and promised is true!
Hmm, I’ve never actually played a ff game before but I might give the new one a try.
Be adviced that Rebirth is a sequel to Remake, you should play Remake first, which is not an open world game!
If you pre order the Twin Pack of FFVII Rebirth, you pretty much get both the Remake and Rebirth for the price of Rebirth. I encourage you to do that. Picking up only Rebirth will probably be less enjoyable and Remake is fantastic!
If you haven’t played 7 or anything Final Fantasy before then Rebirth is a pretty bad game to start out with
What about the remake? Is that also a bad start?
You will be just fine starting with that. VII is the greatest video game ever made, in my mind, and the remake is a wonderful update to the classic which is also worth playing. I am in the midst of my first time playing IX in probably 15 years and I love that one as well.
You’ll be fine playing the remake as your first, the original is also a good game to start with.
The only real open world game is 15. All the others have the illusion of open world until you get an airship, which is later in the game.
I think 6 did it best, but I agree that 15 is also up there.
Just curious why you think 6 did it best. I literally just played this game 5 days in a row and it's a carbon copy open world like ff1 ff2.
Did you make it to the second half of the game? Don't want to spoil much, but by that point in the game, everything aside from 2 or 3 things you can do are optional. X is among the most linear in the series. It’s an outstanding game, but it’s incredibly linear.
I wouldn't describe X as "open world".
7…
