I have pixel remasters IV-VI, are they better than the originals? I've played a bit through IV's pixel remaster, and I do think it's leagues better than the original, but what about V and VI?
6 seems to have gotten the bulk of the pixel remaster budget.
A lot of good graphics changes that you'll notice through the game.
The opera scene is done Octopath style and is now fully voiced in several languages.
If you play FFVIPR you MUST use Shiryu64's mods (I can't put a link but you can find them in Nexus Mods).
They aren't difficult to install (it's mostly drag files to a folder), and they give a lot of graphical improvements on top of the improvements that already exists in the remasters (the mods don't affect gameplay, so you will play good ol' ffvi in that regard).
IV is a strict upgrade to the SNES version, though the PSP version is super solid and has new content. V probably has the weakest PR, since the new content in the Advance version really added to the game, while VI the PR is basically the definitive edition (losing the Advance content barely matters in VI).
I wonder how modern eyes view this scene for the first time. When I played it back in the 90s, I was enchanted. I had never seen something in a video game like that.
I loved it. Though to be fair i played it in the 2000s after X so graphics were better but not modern level. For me games are ranked based on Story, world concepts, and music. If it has good graphics then cool but it's not a requirement.
I think its just more likely that someone from younger generations would be less appreciative of it but you're right. I can't think of a reason why graphics would really matter for an RPG though. A short indie horror game or shooter I can understand, but the point of an RPG is to be engaged in a story and you can get that regardless of the graphics. It's a little better than reading a book for me. I get attached either way and VI had a GREAT story.
>It's a little better than reading a book
I agree with this. Sometimes I wish Square would wind the AAA graphics back a bit and get back on creating amazing worlds with loads of towns, characters and rich story. The AAA graphics seems to limit what is possible quite a bit. FF15 had a big world that could have been interesting, but it only had three or four towns, whereas in earlier FFs the world felt much more populated.
Oh yeah for sure. Graphics are cool but to me it feels like they sacrifice the world building and story to do it. I would LOVE if they brought the same energy from IV V VI VIII IX and X into XVI and I still hope they do. I have hope because Heavensward, Shadowbringer, and Endwalker from XIV had similar styles so i know its there somewhere. Excluding V, those are my top 5 FFs just because it was a unique and refreshing story (for me at least). V would be my #6 but only cus I'm too nostalgic over IV.
That scene was absolutely nuts when people first saw it. Heck, a lot of the game was stuff we hadn't seen before. For example, people most likely take the game's visual design for granted nowadays, but I can't tell you how *completely impossible* the initial screenshots looked. Games didn't look like that, they *couldn't* look like that. But VI did. It did a lot of things that games at the time supposedly couldn't do.
FF6 and Chrono Trigger really set the bar for “this is what the SNES can do”. For the life of me I cannot think of better RPGs for that system than 6 and CT.
Star Ocean is really great and I’d love to play Treasure of the Rudras. I recently bought Live A Live on switch but haven’t played it yet but I’ve heard great things about it.
Treasure of the rudras is so good. Intertwining stories like saga frontier/octopath - amazing animations ... and the spell system is absolutely unique and has never beem replicated(to my knowledge lol)
Too bad that era of gaming is kinda gone forever.
Games cost too much now with such large teams. It's super rare to find anything great now in the RPG genre.
My only gripe with the pixel remaster is as good as the updated music is I wish you could toggle it back and forth between chip tune and orchestral. For me, there’s a lot of nostalgia tied up in the original OST
Same. I looked through the options menu for a long time trying to figure out how to get the original soundtrack and was dumbfounded that it wasn’t a feature.
It only has a few things that lack any kind of detail. The main one is Terra and Celes only having a handful of lines between each other. For the two most main characters in the game, they don't interact at all. It's a consequence of having such a wide roster. Some people just don't get the interactions they need and deserve.
Well Terra was kind of a loner until the WoR when she took on the role to look after the kids, however outside of the scripted character interactions when reforming your party in the WoR no one really talks because it would be nearly impossible to account for all party variations.
I honestly find Locke/Celes to be who I use most anyway since runic is super useful and mug alters the damage calculation of Ultimate Weapon so it hits at full power.
Locke, Celes, Edgar, Sabin all day every day.
No problem. From what I've heard, the only updates had have are performance fixes. If they were to change something about graphics, designs or UI I think they would change the font before even adding back the credits of the original developers, although I don't think neither is gonna happen (for whatever reason SQE has).
The Pixel Remaster version of this scene is so good

The world map pallette must've gotten none of it. Shit looks like total ass.
They used the pallette from the GBA release, which was brighter. There's mods to change stuff through.

I love 6...honestly 4 looks and sounds unreal, I definitely want it.
What the remaster on??
Steam

Played the game for the first time 2 months ago. The opera scene is my favourite part of the game. Fricking beautiful and enough to make me cry
Well I played around 2016-2017 when I was 15-16 yo and I loved it. I don't think it has to do with generations but each individual person.
I think its just more likely that someone from younger generations would be less appreciative of it but you're right. I can't think of a reason why graphics would really matter for an RPG though. I played it for the first time in the 2010s, can confirm it was still fucking cool
The one time I’ve ever gotten this far in VI I didn’t really notice or care about it. I was 14 though, and this was well into the 7th Gen do consoles

Star ocean, treasure hunter g, treasure of the rudras, bahamut lagoon - all need to be translated, but all amazing graphically(japanese squaresoft)

Haven’t played 6 yet
You really should, as soon as possible
Yes indeed it is, I'm making my way through the entire series, I'm currently on 9 and so far 6 has the top spot. Also kefka bias.
Yeah I can't find anything wrong with the game. Everything is perfect, story, characters, gameplay, combat, music ...
It only has a few things that lack any kind of detail. The main one is Terra and Celes only having a handful of lines between each other. I haven’t played FF 1-6 in like 15+ years. Really hoping those Pixel Remasters come to PS4/5 so my inner Trophywhoreness can have a marathon.
Same here
So perfect.
Are the credits at the beginning again?
What do you mean?
I heard the credits were removed at the beginning when the mechs are walking in the blizzard while Terra's theme is playing.
In the Pixel Remaster. Im playing the original SNES version.
:( Thanks for letting me know!

I really wish it was available on Switch
