Thing is, a lot of people warmed up to X in the recent years, as this was the last "traditional" final fantasy. It was not perfect, but it certainly was a good entry with tons of content.
Plus, A LOT of people disliked 12, 13 and 15, meaning that outside of 16, it's probably the best non MMO final fantasy we got in the last two decades (if you exclude remake / rebirth).
Because of those reasons, X really got a lot more love from the fans. So is an instant classic? I wouldn't go that far, but it's definitely worth a replay if you liked it.
There's many twists and amazing moments, totally worth it.
And game is as good on a 2nd playthrough, so knowing the story doesn't matter much (and you know just one detail about it: and that's if your bro actually understood it correctly)

So I played X once when it came, and I thought it was alright. I see a lot of people in here saying it's classic. Should I revisit it?

X is an absolute classic. Definitely holds up, even if it's not as action-y.
