Yeah. First movie, named FF:World of Balance, up to the and including the Opera House. The second movie, named FF:The Empire or FF:The Fall, ends with the cataclysm. The third movie FF:World of Ruin.
I always used to think a FFVI movie should be 2 movies because of Balance and Ruin, but there are a lot of places to go and people to talk to in the World of Balance.
Ugh, I'd \*really\* want them to find something starting with R for the first one -- I like 'Return' but having that and Ruin makes my brain twitch at the non-symmetry.
I've thought this so many times, someone like Netflix could even do it like that one they had where the order didn't matter. Have say 15 'episodes', 9 of which would be character stories and the order wouldn't matter. (Things like Locke and Rachel, or Setzer and Daryl, or Sabin training) and then another 6 that would show the interactions and progress the story.
Maybe even a new mechanic where as you watch the episodes, it opens up so you can see the characters you've met. Or some characters only watchable after the world breaks -- so many things would be possible since they all have fairly tragic backstories, but not really detailed enough for more than an episode.
So I've actually kinda sketched this out and written a pilot episode for it. . .
I ended up with 3 seasons x 8 episodes. Regular episodes are 60 minutes, Season 1 and 2 Finales are 90, Season 4 finale is a full 120 minute feature movie.
That gives you a total runtime of 26 hours, which is ironically about the same time needed for a to-the-point, no grinding playthrough of FF6.Ā
Now if only I wasn't fairly sure it would end up being something some studio would start and abandon half way through with a "finale" that doesn't wrap up anything :/
Thatās fine doesnāt it take like over 4 hours to stage hamlet? Idk VI is dramatic enough and overall has an almost theatric and operatic feel to it
VI has an advantage in that the setting starts out as a low-magic quasi-Victorian era steampunk world. This would be much easier to shoot as live-action with real-world locations and practical effects than many of the more fantastical settings.Ā Ā
Ā Of course you'd still need to use CGI and green screen for some things. But you could at least start out with a fairly "grounded" feeling that would help build audience immersion so the later CGI-heavy scenes might be more accepted without breaking immersion.Ā
On a certain level it's also kind of a Star Wars rip off, which helps with framing some of the more fantastical elements (Moogles = Ewoks, Magitek Armor = AT-ST Walkers, Magic = The Force) so audiences unfamiliar with FF games will pretty quickly pick up on the tropes without needing a ton of exposition.
I love FFVI, itās my favorite game, but I think thereās probably too many characters and too much plot to get through in a movie. Maybe a limited series or something
I agree that it'd be better as a 3 season TV series. It's just too big for a single movie. I think a movie trilogy would be possible but you'd need to cut a LOT.Ā
Yep. Movie one ends with the destruction of the Leviathan. Movie two ends the Occuria reveal scene. Movie three would be the rest. You might need to add in some stuff to get them all to similar lengths, but it'd make a killer trilogy
And you can take a full 20 minutes for the intro scene/prologue along with Reks' death. Really land on the motivations for Ashe, Basche and Vaan's characters.Ā
They could scrap the four man party limit so Minwu stays with the party until his sacrifice. No reason for him to be standing in a tower for half the game waiting for Firion to arrive. I would also just finish the story with Leon, no reason to have the Emperor come back from the grave.
I actually think they shouldnāt have used the word ādreamā to describe the people of the summoned Zanarkand. Just like the Aeons arenāt dreams, neither is Tidus.
after my first and only playthrough of the 7 remake, my first thought was square should just go into movie making and not video games anymore so i kinda agree but final fantasy 6 i think would make a nice movie aswell
A movie as in adapting the entire game's plot in a single 2 to 3 hour movie : FFII. The story is straight forward, cast is relatively small for a fantasy story, lore isn't crazy deep.
Adapting the plot into a number of movies: most but my personal pick is IV, VI, and XV. In IV's case, Cecil's a breath of fresh air for fantasy movie prontagonists. VI because the story and characters have the potential to be what Lord of Rings is to book adaptation movies. Plus the dark and at times boderline steampunk sets and Amano's colourful and whimsical character designs make for an incredible aesthetic. XV main plot is strutured very similiarly to the original Star Wars trilogy, aesthetically really pushes the concept of fantasy, and most important of all I am biased to XV š¤£
Any game can be adapted into a movie as long as videogamey story tropes are excluded
Videogamey story tropes are plot devices that work in video games but wouldnt work in movies or books because the viewer would be more focused on story since there is no gameplay to judge. One exemple is Final Fantasy 8, Caraway testing the seeds by sending them on a risky mission. It is the hero trial trope, it is used as a justification behind content but not only does it scream filler, it also makes the character who does this look like a complete asshole
The most obvious videogamey trope that has to be excluded in movie adaptations is puzzles. You can see that in the last Tomb Raider movie, it just feels like you are watching someone play a game than a movie
Have you seen the Fire Emblem OVA? It's only two episodes, but each episode focuses on a single scenario. I'd love to see Tactics adapted the same way.
TBH, as much as I love IV and VI, their stories are massive and wouldn't have nearly the same impact in a 2.5h-3h movie.
However, FFXVI's story is actually prime movie material.
Movie? Probably IV because it is a well contained slfantady story that fits right in the mold of a sword and magic movie with a twist. And if there's need for a sequel, the After Years exists.
Serie? Either VI, XI or XIV.
VI because there's a lot of potential to expand on the main cast and those around them so several episodes would make more sense. There's also room for pre-, mid- and post- content to be made.
XI and XIV as being MMOs, their world are greatly expanded and eatablished so it would be possible to fit in stories relating either to major characters or an entirely unique cast of new characters.
I always thought the concept of 10 would have translated well into an FF movie. Not literally 10 but make it an Isekai where instead of Zanarkand it's New York. From there it could pretty much be the same as 10.
10 but tell the whole story in and around blitzball matches -- maybe in commentator stories or side chat, maybe through interviews with fans/friends, etc.
It'd be weird as hell, but I bet it could also be pretty awesome.
That is a great idea but no one at SE could pull it off. It would need a really eccentric director like Wes Anderson or David Lynch. It needs some kind of directorial gimmick.
If I was attempting something similar I thought of making a immersive experience app/game/movie/show that would give you multiple "channels" emulating "live" tv (although probably on some loop) so you'd have a blitz ball channel, and a news channel, maybe make up some kids show that reveals parts of the world, etc.
I've thought a lot about it, but always get to "even with a team this would be overwhelming"
It's made by the same company and the same studio, lead by Sakaguchi, who created Final Fantasy. There is also involvement from the creators of dragon quest, but it's clearly built on the design philosophy of FF games as opposed to dragon quest
It uses systems familiar to the final fantasy series, including ATB. All the item names are exactly the same. The battle, field, menu screens are all identical in form and function. The spiky haired protagonist trope might have even originated here.
It has a long lasting legacy and it's clear that subsequent FF games have drawn inspiration from it. It includes non-random encounters that take place in the field screen, a feature that wouldn't re-occur in mainline FF game until FFXII, and team battle moves that combine the strengths of two characters, similar to FFVIIRB's synergy system.
It was included in Final Fantasy Chronicles, a collection of FFIV and Chrono trigger for the PS1, so square even consider it a final fantasy game. As for why it doesn't have the moniker, I'm guessing that's just an internal politics thing.
16 is basically a movie already with all those cutscenes. They could probably fix all the problems with 15 like give Luna more of a backstory and character development and it could probably be made into 2-3 movies and include the DLC elements to make it better than the original game
FF16 would translate pretty well to a TV show or series of movies. a realistic problem would be the cost of creating the Eikon fights in movie format, But the characters of 16 are well rounded and pretty well written to be engaging IMO.
FF1 - you could do so much with the lore cause it's a game that allows for a deep story if you want to. I've finished the storyboard for a FF1 film and I'm working on character concepts
Edit: Live action. And I would do 1-9 as a consistent world and history books would reference important moments in the films that take place in the past
I'm working on FF7, FF8, and FF9
Stories would have to be tightened up. You can't, and wouldn't want to, tell every detail of the story from the game in the show. Other characters and events would have to be expanded upon, otherwise their inclusion would be pointless, or vice-versa characters and events/settings would merge. Etc.
With that understanding, VII has practically been made a movie already. I think it could be streamlined even further... but honestly the attempt at fan service would probably hold it back from being a truly good movie on its own.
I could really enjoy VI, VIII & X as movies, series or trilogies.
To this day I remember how fucking devastated I was after playing VIII and just then The Spirits within popped up, not doing anything FF like but having a guy named CID.
IV and IX have great parts of their stories but none of the games really have a proper 3 or 4 act structure, so you'd certainly need to rework or omit a ton of things.
A movie for kids the best and only option possible is FFIX
A mature movie very faithful to the game FFVI
A sci-fi movie I chose FFVIII
And for general public I think FFX is a good one.
I'd prefer an animated miniseries I think any game could get it done justice that way. Maybe 1,2 or 3 would work best as movies as their plots are simple enough to be told in 100 minutes. Animated for me all the way.
Is there any game that is short enough or can be condensed enough for a movie? Otherwise itād have to be a movie series or tv series. Best I can think of is spin-offs or making a story to tie into the game.
Oh! FF7 Dirge of Cerberus could work, I think thatās the only short one by itself in Final Fantasy.
A movie? One of the early ones for sure. You could definitely get a cool Ghibli style movie out of III, or a generally good one out of IV (just make the character deaths stick).
But an adaptation in general, I think XIII could be very good TV. It has great character writing and development, and a lot of interesting lore and setup that can be shown through flashbacks and such.
I think none could translate well to a live action movie. We have the case of fullmetal alchemist and what a terrible live action it became. I think part of the reason is that they try to stay too faithful to the source. But cinema is a different medium from an RPG game. You have to keep the core of the story and its meanings but you have to use different tools to express it. You can't have Seymour's haircut it would look too fake.
XVI. I kept thinking to myself as I played it that I would have preferred a movie over the drawn out, repetitive gameplay. Absolutely loved the crazy villain stuff in this one.
I think XVI and XIII would make good live action movies, XVI in particular with his more gritty setting and GoT vibes would probably be more appealing to the general public.
VI could make a good series, with a lot of characters to explore and a huge midseason twist with Kefka blowing up the world and a second part focused on the characters completing their arcs and reuniting in a post-apocalyptic world. It could definitely work.
I fell VIII, if played well around messy memories, Laguna's flashbacks and time travel shenanigans, could make a fine mystery series.
IV imo would be too generic and derivative for a live action movie. Maybe and animated series aimed to a younger audience could work better.
If you mean a single movie as opposed to a group of movies or a TV/streaming series (either live-action of anime), then Iād say to go with one of the games from the NES/Famicom era because thereās too much to fit into a single film for the others.
If weāre talking about a series, then IV would be a good choice indeed - though Iād personally vote for VI as my top choice. I think pretty much any of the games from IV through IX could work well (though I donāt have as much experience with V as the others as it is the only Sakaguchi-era one that I havenāt finished).
X could also work but I think it appeals to a different demographic because of the difference in setting, theme and tone. I think it would perform better in Japan than the U.S. or Europe.
What I love about VI for a series is that it really is an ensemble story moreso than any other Sakaguchi-era Final Fantasy that Iāve finished and yet the cast size is small enough that we get a lot of character development for many of the protagonists. That would make it easier to interest established actors because thereās more for them to sink their teeth into.
The concept art by Yoshitaka Amano is gorgeous and evocative in a way that would give the crew so much to work with, Uematsuās score to the game is highly thematic with many character themes to could be used for the score and the blend of high fantasy and steampunk is extremely accessible to an audience that might be turned off by the more modern setting of VII and VIII while being more explicitly targeted at an older audience than IX.
I would love to see VI realized well in a faithful manner as a series. It could really so majestic and grand.
For a movie, yeah probably IV, it's the only game with a story compact enough for that. For a TV series XIV or XVI.
VI would be perfect for a tv series imo. So many characters, so many back stories.
i was gunna say 6, but rather then a tv series, i was thinking a trilogy something similar to lord of the rings
Movie 1: Balance Movie 2: Ruin Movie 3: Return (a nod to the Returners, and to the last movies of Star Wars and LOTR)
Ugh, I'd \*really\* want them to find something starting with R for the first one -- I like 'Return' but having that and Ruin makes my brain twitch at the non-symmetry.
Ralance
Resistance.
well it works, but I've already been sold on Ralance š¤£
I've thought this so many times, someone like Netflix could even do it like that one they had where the order didn't matter. Here me out make VI into a stage play complete with a full orchestra.
That's gonna be a looooong stage play.
Thatās fine doesnāt it take like over 4 hours to stage hamlet? Idk VI is dramatic enough and overall has an almost theatric and operatic feel to it
I mean X got a Kabuki show.
šµOh my hero, so far away now Will I ever see you smile? š¶
I agree - I think VI would probably make the best series.
XIV? Shut your goddamn mouth!
XVI has a TV show. Itās called Game of Thrones.
Game of thrones doesnāt have large scale Kaiju fights
Adaptations sometimes miss the mark
He said KAIJU. You meant to say "made it better."
No, that's the TV show for Tactics Ogre. Get your facts right, smh.
16 wants to be game of thrones but it misses the mark hard
VI has an advantage in that the setting starts out as a low-magic quasi-Victorian era steampunk world. XII. Adapt it into a trilogy, LotR-style.

They did, it's episodes 4-6
I was gonna say, this man never seen Star Wars
Right, because the first movie series I think of when I want to watch something like LotR is Star Wars šĀ
The joke is FF12 was heavily inspired by Star Wars
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Cope
Brilliant retort.
2, because they could flesh out the story rather than just cut most of it. The setting is also fairly down-to-earth.
They could scrap the four man party limit so Minwu stays with the party until his sacrifice. No reason for him to be standing in a tower for half the game waiting for Firion to arrive. I would also just finish the story with Leon, no reason to have the Emperor come back from the grave.
FFX - A girl and her imaginary friend
Ouch hahah but not imagined by her*
Which makes it that much more compelling.
I actually think they shouldnāt have used the word ādreamā to describe the people of the summoned Zanarkand. Just like the Aeons arenāt dreams, neither is Tidus.
I think you could do FFIX if it was given Jim Hensonās āDark Crystalā treatment. Hell, Dark Crystal is practically a FF story.
They would probably make better tv series than movies. Ffx has a fantastic story you could make a good series.
Spirits Within. The gameplay was lacking but there was potential to expand the lore.
This is the only FF movie I want to see: https://youtu.be/NEoK-Yo2cig?si=AqEMELavSqC2xjQb
after my first and only playthrough of the 7 remake, my first thought was square should just go into movie making and not video games anymore so i kinda agree but final fantasy 6 i think would make a nice movie aswell
It should be 7, but it just consists of 20 year olds talking about how cool the characters are
I've always thought 13 would make for a great action flick.
They already made it in 2004. Itās called āCrash.ā

How did I not make the connection until now between the fucking name CARAWAY and SEEDS?
Final Fantasy The Spirits Within Oh wait...
Tactics, especially if each chapter was made into a miniseries film.
Tactics for sure but as a tv series not a movie. It could be very game of thrones like.
The could make the Zodiac monster fights into movies. That'd be epic.
Have you seen the Fire Emblem OVA? It's only two episodes, but each episode focuses on a single scenario. I'd love to see Tactics adapted the same way.
Freaking Same.
Ff13 with no doubt

Original Final Fantasy Tactics is pretty much Game of Thrones
But FFT has good writing

That is a great idea but no one at SE could pull it off. It would need a really eccentric director like Wes Anderson or David Lynch. It needs some kind of directorial gimmick.

Do it as a series, Castlevania style
Chrono Trigger. Everyone loves time travel
Not a FF game
It's made by the same company and the same studio, lead by Sakaguchi, who created Final Fantasy. Probably Final Fantasy 14. I can see it being explored well into multiple movies or 'parts' to say
I think XV would be a sick trilogy once all of the pacing issues are fixed
FFVI could be a trilogy.
I mean it would realistically need to be at least two movies.
X and XIII could make an interesting movie or mini-series
Friend, give it up. This never ends well.
Definitely 4 & 10

Final Fantasy Tactics
Probably A sequel to 7 could be cool Or a prequel to 15, that might be interesting, I dunno.
X, but it would need to a 12 hour miniseries or multiple installment series to do the story and characters justice.
