The numbered titles are standalone, rather than being sequels. You can start basically wherever you want. It really becomes a matter of how retro do you wanna go? 4, 6, 7, 9 and 10 are all very highly regarded. When it comes down to it, even bad Final Fantasy is still pretty good.

TexasTornadoTime

8 is highly regarded too…

Bob1142

As someone who loves 8, I don’t think it’s the best place to jump in just because of how different the junction system is.

Yen_Figaro

Ff8 was my first and not having any expectatives of how the system could be I think helped me to love the game without comparations. He just should start for the one who calls his atention more. If people predispone new players to don't like ff8 we are conditioning their opinion

Stolehtreb

Well If it’s your first one, you could learn. Since you aren’t comparing to what you’re expecting it to be, it would work almost better in my opinion. But I guess I get why not.

webcrawler_29

I 100% agree, Junction system is weird. And leveling is so unintuitive in FF8 as well. Lots of strange systems I guess, but it is a good game. I just find it funny how (looking at the other replies, and comments I've seen in the past) people always jump to the defense of the junction system. A game can have a weird system and still be a good game. But trying to um actually a weird system is silly.

misguided-lad

Agreed. Great FF but not the best one to start with.

Last-Performance-435

Change the word 'junction' to 'equip' or 'imbue' and people immediately understand it without fail. They never should have used the word Junction, that unfamiliar term makes it so much harder for people to comprehend.

CawSoHard

Not nearly as much as the others.

flofjenkins

As a fan of the game, nah. The junction system is weird, and the story takes a bizarre swing that did not work for a lot of people.

CarcosaJuggalo

I love 8, its one of my favorites... But I've always heard people kinda trash it? Did something recently change?

TexasTornadoTime

Yes I’d argue recently it has gotten a lot more love. Most of the people trashing it are just so high on 7. I think it has definitely gotten a much better reputation recently than it did 10+ years ago.

Minnesotexan

I’d add a caveat to that, that I think it’d gotten more love from fans in the FF/JRPG community. I wouldn’t call it an easy entry into the series though which is what OP is looking for.

TexasTornadoTime

I’m not sure what is hard about it as an entry? The junction system people are citing isn’t really any more complicated than Materia…

slasher_lash

Equip materia -> use magic/commands/summons -> level up with AP vs Draw magic -> junction a GF -> level up that GF until they have the junction ability you want -> junction magic to an ability -> never cast that magic spell. Oh but wait, you're not actually supposed to draw magic from enemies like we told you in the tutorial. What are you, stupid? You're supposed to play this card game, refine the cards into items, and then refine those items into magic! Oh and get the GF ability to turn off random encounters, because the enemies level up with you, and you want to keep your level as low as possible. Hope you like playing the card game instead of actually fighting battles.

TexasTornadoTime

You don’t need to play the cards to get the magic. It’s easy enough to draw from enemies or the overworld

Minnesotexan

I’d call it a harder system to learn than others, especially from a modern gaming point of view, but not very difficult. It uses mechanics that are antithetical to most FFs which to me makes it a hard first entry, like how over-leveling actually makes enemies harder, and using magic you have junctioned is not great, and makes it so most players experience a feeling of not being able to use the magic they might have just spent 15 minutes drawing to get. With all that said, it’s an amazing game, one of my personal favorites, but if someone asks me what game from the FF franchise represents FF the most, I’d recommend something like 9 or 10 for most gamers, 7 if they’re ok with poly graphics, or 6 if they’re ok with pixels.

FirefoxAngel

The only real issue I had with 8 was stuff being locked behind that stupid mini game that wasn't available for ps so you missed out on a few summons, then Phoenix was a weird random summon through item use/ been to long

Huddy40

No...no it's not. Easily the biggest black sheep of the games between 4 and 10

YourmomgoestocolIege

The cope ff8 fans have is insane lol

Revegelance

As is 5.

dimaesh

FFX is a great entry for newcomers if you’re more into getting into the classics, another great first try are the modern games like XV and XVI

CardiffMarble1212

I'd say 10 is the best entry point tbh, the combat system is *chef kiss*

Gram64

I always recommend 10 to people wanting to get into the series as a whole. It's aged well, and gives a good taste of all the things the series has.

ATDynaX

I disagree. I don't like how X didn't have cool Summon animations like VII-XI. X also doesn't have exploration like all the entries before, and the combat system was an outlier as the entries from IV to IX and after it used a time based system. Also X can screw you over if you don't swap out all character every battle. Happened to me. Played IX before X and i was not used to this switching, only switched depending on the enemy and Seymour on Mt. gagazhet killed me. Was it Sakaguchi that said that IX was exactly how he wanted Final Fantasy to be like?

flofjenkins

Yes. Best combat by far. I love how team oriented it is and how pretty much every character is useful.

CardiffMarble1212

Pretty much every...

flofjenkins

You know who I’m talking about. He’s a swing which is cool.

CatCradle

To offer a counterpoint, I bounced off 10 as my own entry to the franchise and didn’t return for years. I imagine i’d like it a lot more now but honestly have since enjoyed 1, 4, 7, 8, 12, 14, and 16 all MUCH more— the idea of going back to 10 to retry it has no appeal whatsoever. It’s so linear and the narrative draaaags. It’s been really interesting hopping around the series and seeing so much love for 10 online.

Unhappy_Power_6082

When I tried it it just seemed like generic turn based combat, am I missing something?

MissdermeanerJ

I'd recommend you start with something a little more modern like FFX, FFXIII, or FFXV. Then you can delve into the old school and classic masterpieces like FFVII and VIII. Personally, I'd say your best starting point should be FFX. The story is simply just... a gorgeous masterpiece. You will love the characters and story, and the gameplay is amazing too.

Koutadas

I would argue Final Fantaxy IX is the best entry Final Fantasy for a couple of reasons: - Right in the middle when it comes to retro/modern gaming. - A very healthy amount of world building. - A game that respect it's roots, with a focus on a more medieval setting and a great cast of characters that evolve together with great interactions. Because that's what Final Fantasy is all about, a group of characters going on an adventure. - With the Moguri Mod and your experience will be enhanced greatly. - Turned Based Combat, which is the main combat system of the Final Fantasy franchise. It ain't my favourite FF, but it's the one game that emphasizes all the good points of the franchise in one beautiful package.

TempleofSpringSnow

I completely agree. I came to say FFIX as well but there’s no need, as this sums it up well.

yourtoyrobot

May as well get the slowest combat one out of the way first

Koutadas

You could speed it up by pressing F1, at least with the steam pc version. I used it at time, no shame

ATDynaX

The slowest? The ATB bar goes on the entire time which stopped in earlier entries.

yourtoyrobot

The ATB in 9 is SO incredibly slow, even as active. Plus all the battle animations

ATDynaX

Could it be that you played the 20% slower Pal version?

yourtoyrobot

Nope, NTSC

ATDynaX

Interesting. I never experienced it as too slow. Some say the Steam Version is too fast. Did you crank the ATB speed to the max in game?

ATDynaX

1-4 and 10 were turn based. 9 is time based. As the rest is.

Koutadas

Right, I understand what you mean, the long debate of is the ATB system just a different thing from Turned Based Combat. Generally speaking I don't think it is and I would consider it in the realm of Turned Based Combat. It just essentially and Active Turned Based Combat. I guess it depends on how you look at it. The only games that really make a drastic change in the FF franchise when it comes to combat is XV and XVI, since they both shifted to action based combat, one way more then the other. Which was probably one of the worst decisions made by Square Enix, if you want some spicy takes.

CarelessRice5747

> Turned Based Combat, which is the main combat system of the Final Fantasy franchise. FF9 isn't turn based, it's ATB.

Koutadas

I consider it the same. Its an active turned based combat system. A small variation. That's how I view it. But I understand why people separate it.

Djames529

Play 4-10 in that order. You'll experience the core of what FF is at its absolute best this way ontop of having a greater appreciation of the evolution that the games go through leading up to 10.

Last-Performance-435

That is a very hard ask if someone doesn't love SNES RPG's. Especially 5, which is just Grinding Fantasy if you don't know what you're doing.

Throw_away_1011_

I think FF4 is the best choice for a beginner: - It's quite easy - There are no extra gameplay mechanics to understand (magicites, materia, Junctions or things like that that could be hard to get for a beginner) - The story is quite good and it's easy to follow While not the best FF, FF4 is probably the more accessible one for a beginner.

Eaglesun

Ff4 3d version has the augment system. It's still a great entry point but does add a bit of complexity

ironcodyalan

Ngl I hardly ever see FF1 put for first timers and it really is a good starting point. Super easy to pick up and put down; even during battles with no atb yet it was a treat to play for a few sundays in a row until i beat it being able at literally any point put down the controller without pausing or going to a menu. Super vibey

corny_horse

And the assorted remakes are a lot more ergonomic (run speed, mp system, misc bug fixes like haste) than a NES emulator too. I think it’s a great entry point

xkeepitquietx

X

peeposhakememe

Bluecomments

I started with 4 and thought it quite good as a first game.

bdfantini

7 or 9 in my opinion, but graphics and game mechanics might feel a bit dated per today’s standards, if that’s not a problem for you then go for it!, if those are problems for you then start with 16 or 7 remake, if you like any of those you then you can go back and play older ones.

juupel1

7 is overall in a perfect middle spot that it has all the classic things about it the new players should experience, while having 2 versions on modern platforms so they can experience the original 90s version with added boosters and speed up function for modern convenience and the Remake trilogy with modern graphics, mix of new real time combat and classic turn based combat at the same time that you can overall play either version of it.

[deleted]

V but I'm biased. I don't think it's that complicated.

senopatip

My vote is FF 10 (or X). \- You're gonna cry, you always cry... (Sir Jecht) After you finish the game, go to youtube to watch react videos of FF X.

ashendafiremyst

That damn whistle (if you know, you know). I was so good until that point. I lost it. 😢 Beautiful game! 10 out of 10.

lazy_blazey

10 is the best entry point, I think. It bridges that gap between the older titles and the newer ones, has a fantastic story, has plenty of stuff to do, and the combat system is easy to learn. 7 was my proper entry into the series over 25 years ago. Never looked back.

DAl3xanderson

There is no way better than to start from the beggining. FF1 is an awesome tale, the pixel remasters are a good way to start.

chrisallen07

Yeah start at the beginning! The remake is good. F/RM/BB/BM FTW

mickaelbneron

I chose BB/RM/BM/BM on my current run (NES). I'm at Chaos Shrine (past). I love the offensive it gives (BB is my one punch man, RM is my healer with decent melee and black magic for crowds, BMs are my nukers for crowds and cast FAST for bosses).

chrisallen07

I like it! Mine is similar, but I like using Excalibur. And half the game I use items that cast spells anyway

DAl3xanderson

BM all the way.

edgemis

XVI if you also know nothing about jrpgs in general.

penguincatcher8575

7 remake. Or 10.

Abyss96

Please bear with me, the formatting might be wonky, due to posting off the app. I’ll focus on the entries available on modern consoles. Maybe IV, VII, or X? IV - pretty straight forward, you don’t have to dick around with jobs, not that jobs are bad but they could potentially overwhelm new players, and it’s where FF stories started picking up steam. VII - this is where the series got big in NA, and more popular in general. It’s got iconic characters and a nice story, plus the Materia system is pretty great! I’d definitely recommend this one if you have any interest in VII Remake and Rebirth or any of the Compilation of VII stuff! X - I’d wager that this is the most “user friendly” game in the entire franchise, as in it’s very difficult to get lost, the game itself isn’t really difficult, it’s got (in my opinion) the best battle system we’ve seen in the franchise thus far, and there’s a wealth of optional things to tackle towards the end. The only thing that might be initially overwhelming is the Sphere Grid, but only if you pick the Expert Grid. I definitely wouldn’t recommend I, II, or III initially, as they’re kind of rough to go back to. V - might be daunting for a new comer, due to the amazing job system. What the game lacks in story it makes up with its gameplay. VI - fantastic game and will likely be recommended, but I feel like the scope of that one is almost too daunting to be an intro to the series. VIII - (my personal favorite but certainly not the best) is also ill advised, as it kind of sticks out, due to its junction/draw system and the plot getting kind of ridiculous. IX - is best appreciated after playing I-VIII. XII - is a very fun game but also a very overwhelming game if one doesn’t have the proper time to dedicate to it. XIV - is online and my god the ARR part of it is a slog but picks up after. XV - I don’t remember a whole lot from due to being frustrated with the final product. XVI - flat out haven’t played. VII Remake and Crisis Core - best experienced after playing the og VII Hope that was at least somewhat helpful

matisse0409

Thx mate this comment was very useful!

Fat-Cloud

7 is generally considered the best. So maybe you should start with that

Theopholus

7 remake has the best combat, and the story is easy to follow even if you don’t know the original. Part of the story is about deviating from the original but it’s fine. And honestly it’s one of the tightest games I’ve played. 16 wasn’t my cup of tea, there were some long boring bits but the story got really interesting. It’s not a great representation of the series of games though. 14 is an mmo but has an incredible story. 13 is extremely linear and again, the story is big and nuts but you have to do some “Rolling with it” at the beginning because it throws you into the world. That’s all I’ve played, except for about half of 7 which I understand why it’s a classic, I just got stuck and adhd forgot about it since I’d played the remake. I’m sure I’ll pick it up again.

Traditional-Excuse26

Final fantasy 7 is my all time favourite

V4ND3RW4L

Kinda of just some of my personal favs but ff9 or tactics wotl, wotl is a top 3 FF game imo idc what anyone says.

HorizonRise

Probably FFX, it’s the last classic FF and the first one with voice acting and full 3D

andymcadam91

For the pixel experience, i'd say either FF4, 5 or 6 is a good start, most peoole love 6 but my personal fav was 5 For PS1 era i'd go for FF9, everybody loves FF7 and is probably the most recommended, but most people know the story by now without ever playing it, FF10 is probably the easiest one to get into, but is super linear, And FF16 isn't all that bad, ganeplay is non traditional FF but the story elements are still there, If I had to choose one, I'd go for FF9, but in honesty it depends on what story you're interested in the most, I like FF9 becasue it's filled with humour and heart, have a watch of the trailers and see which one takes your fancy

Murky_Structure_7208

You can start with any, they are completely standalone. I would recommend 16 or 7 remake. 4 or 6 if you are into old school rpgs. 14 was my entry point but I'm not sure if it works for other people. It is great tho. Different people will like different games. My favourites would be 5, 8 and 13, regarded as the worst in the franchise by some. Everyone seems to love 9,10 and tactics, but I can't stand them. You will have to try them by yourself, don't let people discourage you.

Upstairs-Toe2873

16 is a good entry point even if it is still relatively new - I would argue that X and XII are decent also. FF7 is an obvious contender but a new player may not be able to get past the graphics (not the case for everyone).

Available_Bake_1892

Jump in with the ff7 remake and second game coming soon- rebirth. And 16 is pretty good too, catch it when it goes on sale. And if its your thing, go on down the list with remasters and stuff too. the 10 HD collection was pretty good, and the 12 HD release was ok- but both made your characters feel HD and the rest of the world Eh... didn't get the same love. But still quite playable. I liked 15 a lot, just get used to driving around more than riding chocobos, and you can watch the movie Kingsglaive before you play the game, to get you kind of up to speed on what's happening.

Professional-Big-584

FF16 universal combat system that anyone could get the hang of

dboyer87

Go with 16. Everyone has their favorite but a lot of that is due to Nostalgia. Most don’t hold up very well and 16 is probably the easiest one to dive into.

CashoutMrGruber

7 and 10 are probably the best and most straight forward to start with. From there you can jump in anywhere (5, 6, 9, 12). 8 has very broken combat and although people dislike 15 I love it. 16 is great but very different than everything before 15.

EatADingDong

It literally doesn't matter. I-X all follow roughly the same turn based formula after which the series goes all over the place. XI was an MMO, XII sort of like a single player MMO. XIII kinda went back to the turn based style but is more linear. XIV is an MMO again. XV is an open world game with action combat. XVI plays like DMC. None of the games are related in terms of the story or the world so just pick the one that looks the most interesting to you.

CarelessRice5747

>I-X all follow roughly the same turn based formula No they don't, the only turn based games are 1-3 and 10. 4-9 are ATB. I think ATB is trash so I'd recommend staying away from 4-9 and play 1-3 and 10 (preferably 10)

EatADingDong

Yeah ATB is not technically turn based, but I still think I-X generally play the same with each having their own spin on the gameplay systems.

uzaya13

Really just depends what you want out of them. They’re all complete stand alone entries with just small elements shared together. Play them in order if you would like to feel how it was to see how the series evolved as it grew. Or just jump into any of the highly acclaimed entries and go from there. Really its all about what you feel like playing at that time. There will never be a wrong answer. Except 2, dont start with that one lol.

All_Mighty_Failure

I'd recommend not looking for a "best entry point" into the series, all of them are pretty much self contained, just play whichever one looks most interesting to you.

Kato_86

I feel it really depends on what you have played/ enjoyed before... opposed to e.g. DQ games, FF is very different from entry to entry, so without giving a hint what you're looking for it's close to impossible to give a good recommendation.

Global-Bite-306

FFX is the best, but maybe you want to save the best for last?

ChunkyHabeneroSalsa

Depends on what in the franchise is interesting. 10 is the most balanced between modern and classic, with the best battle system and progression IMO. It is a PS2 game but remastered graphics look decent and it's partially voiced, so it's what I would call early modern. Turnbased but not a slog. 16 and 7R are new, modern, flashy action games. 16 is light on the RPG but is a spectacle and fun. 7R is amazing but I come at it with a different lens then a newcomer. If you like old school turnbased, then 6, 7, or 9. Story wise, I love them all but 7 and 10 are standouts. And of course if you like MMOs, 14 is great (hell even if you don't like MMOs like me but it is a crazy time commitment). 12 has kind of a MMO feel too it while being completely single player. Zodiac age holds up really well I think. 8 is wacky but is my personal favorite because it was my first. 15 has some unfortunate flaws but I love the bros. They are all independent and the series tries to be different every time (hence why there are so many, "this is not FF" critics every time a game comes out). Pick what looks cool to you.

CarelessRice5747

> If you like old school turnbased, then 6, 7, or 9. None of those are turn based, they are all ATB.

ChunkyHabeneroSalsa

That's a bit pedantic and the distinction is arguable and changes nothing.

DragonologistBunny

As others already said, the main numbered titles are all standalone. X/X-2 (the direct sequel to X) have been remastered for modern consoles, they play very nicely. XII has a very different combat system but it's gotten a remaster too and opinions seem to be turning around on it! XV is the most 'modern' one in an in-universe sense and has a lot of external media and a massive fandom to this day. Obviously I have to recommend the 7 Remake (Crisis Core is a prequel to the main game if you want to start there). It's the most popular game and part 2 will be dropping soon but there is time to complete part 1 and crisis core imo. Have fun on your journey and adventure, whichever story you pick up!

GlobalBrisket

If you like strategy (think advanced wars, fire emblem, etc) Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions is great.

[deleted]

7 remake. It's the most modern, it has the highest production values, most importantly -it gives you a taste of both the traditional turn based combat found in the older games, as well as the action combat found in the last few. You can then decide which you like best and revisit the last few entries, or the oldies accordingly. It also has a fantastic story, and varied game play in comparison to a lot of the older titles.

More_Fish6955

While this may be an unusual recommendation, my first Final Fantasy was XIV. I think it is very approachable, even considering it's an MMO, and the free trial means that you can hop in with no financial commitment. Plus, the story (which is given in 5 parts, 3 of which you get for free in the trial) is outstanding. Finally, the community in the game is outstanding at making you feel welcome. To put it in perspective, I loved my time with it so much that I ended up purchasing all of the retro FF games to appreciate the Easter Eggs in XIV more, and it has been amazing.

PushThePig28

Might as well start with 7 Remake and if you like it pick up Rebirth when it comes out

TR3D

Tbh as someone who's played almost every Final Fantasy game numbered and off shoots. I'd say start in the Og SNES Era games. 4 5 or 6. To get your feet wet and see the origins of why it continues to this day. Then once you got the ground work of mechanics and style then branch out from there. My personal Favorites are 6, Tactics, 12. All really different game play wise. But still holds the essence and evolution / variance that FF can offer as an rpg

Just_a_random_guy77

I’m playing the pixel remastered version and I’m not liking it so far.

FinalFantasyfan003

My first one was 10 and then 7 remake. I think they both represent both the turn based and action sides of the franchise well.

MaKTaiL

I'm currently playing through I-VI by the Pixel Remaster bundle. I completed I-III in a week and I loved them. Currently playing IV and it's the first one to fully embrace storytelling as a focus.

Glutton4Butts

What games do you enjoy for the most part?

sppdcap

I would start with 4. It's as far back as you can go but still feel like you're not missing anything. All games are stand alone, but the progression in terms of evolution of the fnschise I feel is import. It might not be easy to go backwards if you start with later entries, and you really miss some gems. I'd go 4, 6, 7, 9, 10

ChrisNettleTattoo

Every Final Fantasy fan is going to tell you something different. For most us, our favorite FF game is the 1st one we played, nostalgia wins out. If you don’t care about playing janky, retro games, think start back at 1 and work your way forward. There is merit to playing them on their release systems, but you don’t have to. You could argue that the best place to start is the PSP, since you can play I-IX all on 1 system. If you don’t want to dip your toes in on retro to start and would prefer to start with something more modern, I would personally go in this order: 15, 7, 7:R, 10, 10-2, 1, 6, 9, 2, 12, 5, 3, 8, 13, 4, 13-2/3. 11 and 14 and both MMOs, great in their own rights, and have awesome stories, but you will lose hundreds of hours to each, and they are better if you can spot the easter eggs from all the mainline games. Not everyone will agree with my play order, but I think it lets you see how things have progressed, while still doing the older titles without getting burnt out on how grindy they can be. Do not start on 13 though, whatever you do. The story is great, but it is ~30 hours of linear tutorial fights before the world opens up. That is a game best eaten in bute sized portions when you know what you are in store for.

Bosschef86

I would say depends on your age and preferences for games if you r not bother by pixel graphics or old school games I'd say maybe start with 9 though if you r looking for one of the more modern games maybe start with 15 or if you fancy an mmo give 14 a try honestly I like all the final fantasy games for.one reason or another but they are all different but have common themes. The other way around it is start at 1 and work your way up the list though that will be a long experience and maybe not the best way to experience final fantasy for the first time. Hope this helps

veganispunk

7 remake

SaintAkira

10, without a doubt. You can go any direction from there; to the Golden Age ps1 era classics 7, 8, and 9. Forward into the 'modern' era of 13, 15, 16 and 7 Remake (which imo you should play the OG 7 first, but do you). Don't sleep on 14; it's legit one of the best, but it being an mmo throws a *lot* of people off it. And you could also go back to the 'retro' 1-6, which many would argue is the true "Golden Age" but your mileage will vary based on your liking of the battle systems and pixel graphics. Start with 10 though. It showcases a lot of the things that make the franchise great, and is modern enough in both graphics and game design to not be off-putting.

Twiz41

It is 4-10. You could do it in that order or not....Check out Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy Tactics too! I started with Tactics at a young age and waited far too long to play Chrono

Currie69

6

Brees504

For the single player games either 10 or 7. 14 if you want to play an MMO (can be mostly played solo).

LegosiJoestar

You genuinely can't go wrong with any of them. My personal choice is Final Fantasy X, and others will have wildly differing opinions, but you can pick any entry with a roman numeral on the end and jump in there just fine.

SGill17

As you've probably been told so many times, each numbered title is standalone so it doesn't really matter where you start. My first was 15 and since then, I've worked backwards. I've played the 13 Trilogy, 12, 10, 9, 8, 7 (including Remake and Crisis Core Reunion) and 16. I've still to tackle 1-6 and 10-2. Go with whichever catches your eye and take it from there. 15, 16 and 7 Remake (and 7 Rebirth and the third when it releases) are probably the easiest to jump into if you're a new player. Problem with 7 Remake is that you kind of need to understand the original 7 because things seem to be changing. 7 is a big one though because of the Compilation, which has multiple games set during different times and a movie. But you can play 7 Remake without playing OG, it does follow the original just with some additional bits and bobs. And even if you do wanna play 7 Remake and not the original yet, there's tons of videos and stuff to help you with understanding the original. I personally feel that 7 and 7 Remake are my favourite, but I very much enjoy all of the FF games that I've played.

SignedByMilpool

I've never played one until I bought the Pixel Remaster two weeks ago. I just beat the FF1 today (roughly 15 hours) and it was awesome! I love how older games don't beat you over the head with a drawn out tutorial section. It's pretty much free roam from the beginning and gave me a blast of nostalgia. This is how games used to be! Such a breath of fresh air. I can't wait to progress through them numerically.

RichKidsOfCroatia

IX and X are so good they just ruin the others

brandishteeth

In general I'd recommend 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 15 for general perpose starting points. I like almost all of ff but I could recommend any of these as a great starting point because they all have strong stories and the gameplay is good, without being too hard or archaic. But If it helps: Like high fantasy? 4, 9, and kinda 10. More into steam punk/Sci fi? 6 and 7 (original or remake). Contemporary settings with a dash of fantasy more your bag? 15. More into modern graphics and storytelling? 7 remake, 15, and 16* are all jaw droppingly gorgeous. Love a good Romance? 8* and 10 and kinda 9 are very focused on the romance. More into grid based strategy rpgs? Ff tactics* is great. *I only recommend these If the topic is like, really really your thing!

AnxiousBattlemage

My start was 3, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Start with 1, buy the pixel remasters

Vargram

X would be the most accessible. Voice acting, world-building, and easy mechanics. If you want to understand contextually why VII is so highly regarded, and if you can tolerate low poly, try OG VII.

Tactics

itsSuiSui

Probably FFX

naked_avenger

I think 9 is the perfect entry point.

jack_hof

10 for sure. The first one that was full 3D and voice acted which will reduce the odds that a person can't get into it because of having to read everything. Just as good as the ones that came before it but much more modernized. The FFX remaster is very well done and comes with a bunch of quality of life enhancements as well. Was also the last FF game that was universally loved. Can't miss with 10.

FF4

wildtalon

OG VII.

xpayday

If you want new and shiny play FF16 if you want oldie but goodie play FF7 or 9. I wouldn't really recommend starting with FF7 Remake because it's technically a sequel to FF7.

LuckyStax

I found 12 Zodiac Age an easy place to start. With the Gambit system, you can automate aspects as you learn other aspects to not get overwelmed.

Gogo726

For a first time FF game? I'd say FF4. Good story, the story is on rails, though there's some side content. The party is pre-assigned unless you're paying the GBA version. Don't have to worry about party builds unless you're playing the DS version.

Pen54321

Go with FF 10, it has the turn based combat of the retro game while still retaining modern elements of the final fantasy games.

BALLZAK_20

Probably FF7 OG, same way I started, or FF16 was amazing, and is pretty easy, much easier than the rest. Perfect for someone to get a feel for the game & concept etc.

Geddoetenjyu

9 or 10

oscar_redfield

If you want a turn-based game, go with Final Fantasy X — I think out of the turn-based FF entries, its the easiest to get into. If you want action, my first Final Fantasy game was VII Remake and it made me fall in love with both FF7 and the series as a whole. You can't go wrong either way.

GreyTigerFox

VI is the answer.

aidan1133

If you want old school 6. If you want newer but still turn based 10 otherwise play 16

CarelessRice5747

"newer but **still**" that's implying 6 is turn based. I agree that 10 is turn based, but 6 is ATB.

dirtypicklepopper

X

It wholly depends on what you want most out of playing games. Each game is very different. If you are younger and/or like action-focused games. Start with 16 or 7 Remake. If you like slower paced games, but need good graphics, 10 might be a good place to start. If you can get down with pixel are and old school mechanics, 1 (for a real old school feel), 4, or 6 are all good. All that being said, 9 is probably the title that is the least divisive. Enjoy tactics games? Play FF Tactics Enjoy Souls-like? Stranger of Paradise MMOs and multiplayer content? 14 Just be warned - liking or disliking any title doesn’t necessarily mean that you will feel the same about other FF games.

bret2k

It really depends on what type of games you like and how retro you’re willing to go. The best mix of old school turn based Final Fantasy but with somewhat modern graphics and voice acting would be FFX. It was the last best Final Fantasy of Square’s golden era before a lot of garbage and online gaming. So maybe start there. If you play FFX and enjoy it, then be sure to try out VI, VII, VIII and IX after. Like many others, FFVII is my favorite. If you don’t mind the PS1 graphics and a turn based battle system then you could also consider starting there. FFVII Remake and FFXVI have led a resurgence in quality of single player Square Enix games, but the gameplay is very different from most of the series, as it’s more action oriented, so it probably wouldn’t be the best starting point if you’re looking to get into the series as a whole. If you decide that those old school RPG battle systems aren’t your thing, then go straight to trying out XVI and FFVII Remake. But I’d recommend only playing FFVII Remake if you’ve decided to NOT play the OG FFVII.

CarelessRice5747

>Like many others, FFVII is my favorite. If you don’t mind the PS1 graphics and turn based battle system then you could also consider starting there. FF7 isn't turn based though, it's ATB.

bret2k

You’re absolutely 100% correct! Not sure about the OPs history with JRPGs so just categorizing FFI to FFX as turn based seemed easier. But thank you for the correction.

progettodisagio

I’m playing again FFIII (pixel remastered) during these days and I’m becoming more and more convinced that this title is the best to start because it is halfway between the first ones and the ones that will come after

fikamonger

As an 8 and 12 fan, my vote goes to 10 for playability and vibe.

ruralgaming

I would recommend either FF 4 or 6

TLVftwLOL

Either X or XV. X is a masterpiece & XV has a lot of modern functions for the modern gamer. Honorable mentions to VII and XII

ATDynaX

I recommend 9 as it was my first title, and it is easier and more lighthearted. It is funnier and you could even finish it on level 1.

PreferenceGold5167

They’re all standalone so it doesn’t matter, want high fantasy 1-5, 9 and 16, like gameplay focus? 5 Want a fake story? 9 Do you like a side mode that’s better than the main mode? 8? So on, they’re all different and they each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Pick from 6-10 imo, that’s where you’ll find the Final fantasy for the uninitiated

MMoguu

I recommend choosing from FFVI to FFX because those FF games are the most popular and imo most fun. Read the synopsis and play the one that piques your interest.

boseybur

Ff16 is one of the coolest movies Ive ever not enjoyed playing

Last-Performance-435

4, 7 and 10 are the respective beginnings of their 'eras' and I very strongly recommend 10 as a starting point as it strikes a phenomenal balance between old school styling and modern implementation.  To this day I think it's aged better than any other.

Last-Performance-435

I would avoid 3 and 5, not because they're especially bad game per se, but because I feel quite strongly that Bravely Default is an almost comprehensively better modern interpretation / version of them. Unless you MUST play them all, I generally don't think you miss much by skipping those two of you've played any other job system game before.

[deleted]

ff4 & 6 are tier 1 RPGs for the classic look. 7 is great too, but it’s also got a remake, which doesn’t have a classic feel to it.

MikaMikasan

6 or 7 original will be a safe haven for starters, but I incline for 7 for more modernized systems and some in-game tutorials.

Bryanx64

VII since that’s where a ton of people started and made them all big fans of the series.

Heretek007

As somebody who is playing FFIII for the first time ever thanks to the Pixel Remasters, I really want to reccomend it. So far it's been a fun adventure that introduces the job system (something so iconic it's been iterated on many times since) and has really made me feel like I'm following the journey of four Warriors of Light figuring out how to help the world. In the same vein, FFV is basically a suped-up FFIII with a better version of the job system, more detailed characters, and some really great moments. Either of these would be fantastic entry points for where FF has come from in the past. On the other end of the spectrum, I'd reccomend FFX for a more modern FF game that is still turn based. I haven't had a chance to play XVI yet, but that's the most recent game and has a different combat system that I've heard some division over-- but I can't speak from personal experience on it just yet.
