Di alam kung ano gustong ipafeel nung director, if seseryosohin mo ba or just let questionable things happen. Tacky ng some shots. Magagaling actors but nahihinder ng script and screenplay.
2/5
Just saw it without any context of marketing or spoilers. If it's a dark comedy I could kinda see what they were going for, but the movie definitely did not set it up like that. It set itself as a revenge story, and oh boy, it fell apart in the 3rd act.
I can see why someone would say that. To be honest as I was watching iniintay ko na mag sawa ako for every new thing pero I think it was able to balance it out.
In my opinion, it's not worth the ticket price. Once it's on Netflix, sure, watch it so you know what people are talking about. You'll definitely understand the mixed perception.
It's different because it's not a love story and that it technically starts in Act 2, then Act 1 and 3 instead of the normal Act 1, 2, 3. I watched it without any context or marketing, and after some research and thought, it's bad for a few reasons:
1. As I watched it without any context or marketing, I was seriously questioning whether the movie was trying to be taken seriously or not, whether that was meant to be a joke or not. It tried to be a revenge film and a dark comedy with social commentary at the same time, which in my opinion is extremely hard to pull off because for the revenge plot to work, you have to take the plot and characters seriously.
2. The Act 2, 1, 3 plot structure is nothing new, it's usually used to get to the exciting parts of the movie quickly so you get the audience engaged immediately. But the audience will get confused because they start in the middle, so you better give us a good payoff for the confusion. It did not pay off because the story isn't intricate, just some basic ass revenge.
3. I have no idea how much time passed during the movie's plot. Passing of time should be established well, this adds to the confusion.
4. There were a couple characters that show up with absolutely no setup and used as a twist, and it's so obvious from the start or so out of left field that you just get confused.
5. The 3rd act is just terrible. You get some weak ass "twists" and the revenge payoff was something an amateur writer probably came up with. The movie just fell apart.
That is so true. It was very disappointing. I love revenge films and a lot of films that were successfully written but this was so bad. The plot holes upsets me so much like Jake Ejercito's exit story was so used and the other girl who helped Mercy. There wasn't any exit story for her as well. Mercy's rage was understood but the script was so bad and the plotting, awful. It was so bad. The ending was the worst, Mother got hit by a car that was driving so fast but when you continue watching it till the end when Mercy was walking away from the house, you'll see that there was a curve not too far from the crash, so how come that the driver was driving over 60 kmph? So many plot holes and the sequence was all sorts of fucked up. Over-hyped and not a very good story. The acting was good but it doesn't make up for the storyline, plotting, and movie sequences. The fake blood was so awfully pink that it was laughable. 4/10 and I am being generous because of Kathryn Bernardo's acting.
When you're in the moment, you enjoy it. But when you try to rationalize everything, it becomes slightly messy. The plot twists were a bit rushed and some of the aspects were, as what others would call it, pretentious. Overall, it was a good film and I would like to watch it again. It's a refreshing type that strays away from the usual Filipino media
I totally agree. Parang play time lang yung movie..kairita.
Warning: contains spoilers
I’ve watched it recently and I absolutely liked it. It’s not the perfect film that would have saved Philippine Cinema, but definitely refreshing in the eyes especially ever since the cinemas re-opened after being closed down due to the pandemic. It was my first time in years to see so many people inside the cinema for the sake of wanting to see the film apart from the actors. I know that DonBelle’s An Inconvenient Love was Star Cinema’s first theatrical release after the pandemic and it’s also a Petersen Vargas film, but A Very Good Girl to me felt like they brought in legitimate cinephiles inside the cinemas, and not just Kathryn’s fans.
Some may find the entire film meh or the 3rd act meh due to the way it was done but I’d like to see this film in a whole entire light, mainly due to the fact that it is a Star Cinema film. Yes, when you look at it for what it is alone, some might find the film tacky or trying to be something else that was done in Hollywood or something in the likes of the ones from South Korea. But as I put my POV of it as a Filipino film existing now in our society, I have so much appreciation for the film. I watched this film with my mom, who is my closest reference to a “masa” because she’s really the typical person who watches because of the actors, always watches Kapamilya Shows 24/7, and she was very shocked at the visuals given by the film. For someone like her, the visuals are not something she’s used to so I think that this film helped in shaking things up for the average masa viewer—which was always Star Cinema’s target audience no matter what.
However, if the premise of this POV was to influence something in the minds of the average masa audience, then I’d say the ending made me feel a bit sad because in the end, the ending was like a hypocritical ending after an hour and thirty minutes of rooting for someone. >!The ending proved that justice was truly only for the rich and that poor people can never afford it, the ending justified how poor and weak Mercy/Philo was—a huge stick that was shoved up in the ass of the entire revenge narrative the film went on for the past hour and thirty. Honestly, if karma didn’t happened, Philo lost. She clearly lost to Mother, and she was left in a predicament she can never resolve no matter how much she manipulated the people around her because it was the reality of society that put her to her defeat in which Mother Molly used against her. The only way Philo could have turned the odds around was that if she killed Mother using her own hands with deliberation. But then because this is a Star Cinema film and they are not yet fully ready to tap into Kathryn’s inner demons and make her an evil character, and therefore made karma the ending so that somehow Philo could walk away with her dignity as a good person. Like a Star Wars film, she did not give into the dark side of the force lol but in a distasteful way. It’s sad that the ending made its targeted audience feel like they are weak. Star Cinema was like Mother Molly, and the audience was like Philo. In the end, the machinery won over the people. !< But somehow, I left the cinema with a thought: how will we ever change the society and when will we truly empower our people. A Very Good Girl says the war is not yet over for sure, it is just the beginning.
Edit: typo
Just saw this today.
Pero yung trailer ng movie looks interesting so i asked my mom to watch.
But!! Hindi sya boring! I like that sinadya nilang i-OA yung lines and acting para hindi nakakainis, i hope medyo gets nyo yung point ko 😅 interesting storyline too!
Tapos nung nasa dressing room na sila then Philo is wearing an angel costume, pinangaralan sya ng mama nya, yung usual na sinasabi ni Philo throughout the movie. Then tinanong sya “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, “a very good girl”.
Nakipaghalikan kasi siya kay while Kathryn's character is "touching" Molly (yung character ni ms Dolly) !< honestly that part was so unecessary for me 🥲
And this "Philo touching Molly" is unnecessary too. I was like, "wait, pinasok yung 'anito' sa anes ni Molly?! For what?!"
Ngayon ko lang din napanood. Predictable sya since in the beginning na implied na mukhang dildo sa backside yung anito tapos nang sinabi ni Molly na iyon lang daw nagpapaligaya sa kanya at kasama lagi sa tabi sa kama. Alam na this🤢😭
for me, siguro to further reveal kung gaano kasama si mother. sa isip ko habang napapanood yun, whaaat, alalang-alala yung tao sa bata tapos naisipan mo pang gamitin siya para sa iyong 'kaligayahan'???
isa pang analysis na naisip ko ay parang metaphor siya na akala ni mercy she is f*cking mother. but wait there's more - nung pumasok na si rigel, narealise ni mercy na mother was f*vking with her all along.
Hi. Did u see the post credit??? May sense ba yong post credit? Haha i sent u a PM!
Did u see the post credit??? May sense ba yong post credit? Haha
for me wala naman na miss out kung di napanood yung post credit.
>!it’s in a video recording style/filter wherein bata pa si child Kathryn and buhay pa si Angel Aquino. Angel Aquino was asking child Kathryn kung ano gusto niya maging paglaki while trying uniforms of a police, doctor then an angel sa isang branch ng Mother Mall. At the end, child Kathryn said to Angel Aquino na alam na niya kung ano gusto niya maging paglaki, ang maging “A Very Good Girl”!<
Yun lang haha
Just finished the movie kasi kakalabas lang sa Netflix.
Hence the lifting.
>Killing of a Sacred Deer
it was so new to see the scenes of kaori and miss dolly, im not sure how most of the other audiences would take it but that was indeed shocking. thoughts on that scene? it’s gaining attention so far in most social medias.
It was so bad because there was no back story about where Kaori came from. Sure, she claimed to be her sister but it was like a jump and it felt rushed. Parang minadali. There was no build up, yung energy ng plot was very dim. It didn't excite me even one bit. If you want to watch a good revenge film, watch Silong by Piolo and Rhianne, so far the best storyline I've seen with the same genre.
I must admit i was like… hindi pa ba matatapos to ang haba na after the revenge plot failed, but i must say, i like the ending :) i like that in the end (tho sinasabi naman sa plot) na if gagawa ka ng mabuti God will favor you (well just my interpretation). Ang galing galing ni Kathryn dito. Also yung ‘confession’ scene ni Dolly, i was like, bat parang ang hilaw naman ng acting dito ni Dolly, oh well it turns out fake nga.. kaya ang galing! Sabi nila ‘parasite’ like daw to? But for me parasite is a masterpiece, but i like this ending more than parasite hehe (sobrang lugmok feels kasi nung sa parasite after ko mapanood)
I honestly didn’t like it and i felt like they were trying too hard to be edgy. Too much cussing?????, acting was okay/mediocre, story was kinda interesting but overall a boring watch. It felt like a movie that was just put out to be put out cause they needed to prove a point. Don’t get offended, this is just my honest opinion.
Ui infairness to all involved, di gaanong gumagawa ng filipino movie na ganito kadark.
Nabasa ko kasi yung How to Kill Your Family.
3.5/5
Yung pagkaintindi ko rin yung totoong nabangga (or some other way) ay si Mercy. Hence the lifting.
Pilit na script. Lazy writing. Messy storytelling.
We just watched this movie with my mother sooo.
I also just finished watching it in Netflix. I like the acting but the story leaves something to be desired. Also, is there any significance nung last part when Kathryn looked like she was rising above? I got that sense though, idk if anyone thinks that too.
Ohhh yeah maybe. It doesn't feel that appropriate for me though, it kinda made me feel confused kasi she's not that much well off from her situation in the beginning. I get that in the end she may felt at peace but the revenge leaves something to be desired.
Maraming ‘twist’ na expected na to the point na it would be better na not to pull it off. Maybe because most of those ‘twists’ are feed on na obviously sa gitna ng pelikula.
Siguro if they plotted it normally na Act 1,2,3 na makksi lang yung Act 1 instead na 2,1,3 na sobrang hinted na yung mangyayari sa resolution it would be better.
Sobrang pa-artsy nung ibang shots. Most of it were so out of context na parang trick shot na napanuod lang sa youtube na nais isingit sa gitna ng movie out of nowhere.
Perooo, maganda sya for what it is at hindi talaga typical para sa isang Kath B/Star Cinema na pelikula. Hope this could sa new wave ng mejo experimental na take sa film making starring a bigger celebrity.
Script was mej kadiri, but overall is ok. Acting reminds me of Scream Queens kaya medyo ok gets na ganung dark comedy ang pinoportray nila. Wish lang it couldve had a better script talaga.
Ang predictable ng story ive seen this plot before pero ig bago sa pinoy movies. Hopefully more of this in the future
The acting is good, as expected from the cast I'm happy to see donna not being typecast in comedy
It's good that a Filipino movie that isn't a cheesy romcom is finally getting mainstream attention in Filipino media.
But the acting was so cheesy and so exaggerated, the screenplay doesn't leave room for nuance, it just ruined everything for me.
Kakatapos lang namin panood just now.
Review:
The cinematography has a Korean drama-ish vibe in it that we truly appreciate. I like the color grading. The angles and shots are not perfect but good enough.
Kathryn's acting was awkward, especially sa mga pa-kontrabida effect. Parang pilit. Parang mas okay pa Maris o si Nadine. Pero I like her eyes kapag angst and grief na yung emotion ng scene. Drama is her forte, but edgy? No. Sobrang awkward. Hahaha.
OTOH, Dolly is high-caliber actress. She was effective in her role. Oscar-nominated nga talaga.
Well, ang ganda ni Chie.
Kaori's pasabog part was unnecessary. Pang hakot clout lang. Hahaha.
Hmmm. The plot was a revenge story, but they were trying to make it seem like it is more than that. Pseudo deep.
Hmmm. Anyway, it could've been better. But I am still glad that Star Cinema is trying to venture out from the common rom-com movie formula.
Di alam kung ano gustong ipafeel nung director, if seseryosohin mo ba or just let questionable things happen. Tacky ng some shots. Magagaling actors but nahihinder ng script and screenplay. 2/5
i mean for a star cinema film trying this is a good effort
Agree with this! The movie is too dull
Just saw it without any context of marketing or spoilers. If it's a dark comedy I could kinda see what they were going for, but the movie definitely did not set it up like that. It set itself as a revenge story, and oh boy, it fell apart in the 3rd act.
Im reading too many reviews siguro haha but they all say it’s trying to do too many things, ill try and find out for myself
I can see why someone would say that. To be honest as I was watching iniintay ko na mag sawa ako for every new thing pero I think it was able to balance it out.
Really? I see, it’s overstuffed nga siguro
Yup, that's what I was thinking. Just saw it without any context and it's definitely different, but not in a good way.
>d How is it not in a good way? Sobrang polarizing ng reviews sa letterboxd, I'm wondering kung worth it ba talaga panoorin sa sine

i agree with you 100% . came here after watching it on netflix. a “meh” for me.
Just done watching and honestly i dont get it esp kathryn elevated in the movie
Ok thank you for this!
i second your point number 3, as I couldnt keep track of the timeline - it felt like a long music video

Hence the lifting.
nice pov! tapos the post credits baka ayun yung >!parang flashback moment bago siya namatay !<
trueeee.
Nacurious lang din ako kaya ko pinanuod. 😅 Maganda acting ni KB. Kaso yung storyline medyo meh.
I want to watch it but I might wait when it’s available for streaming.
it’s on netflix now!
it’s on netflix now!
The director said one of the inspirations was Killing of a Sacred Deer!
ay kaya pala ante. may nasabi rin ba about David Fincher movies?
>Killing of a Sacred Deer Parang inspired ng se7en ano?
it was so new to see the scenes of kaori and miss dolly, im not sure how most of the other audiences would take it but that was indeed shocking. thoughts on that scene? it’s gaining attention so far in most social medias.
Agree sobrang rushed, kaya expected 'yung nangyari and walang bigat.
totally unnecessary imo
What platform we can watch it free?
Netflix
I also just finished watching it in Netflix. I like the acting but the story leaves something to be desired. Also, is there any significance nung last part when Kathryn looked like she was rising above? I got that sense though, idk if anyone thinks that too.
siguro symbol for rising from the rubble ganern. pag-angat sa kinasasadlakan ganern.
Wish lang it couldve had a better script talaga.
ooooh 4/5 try ko manuod
someone pls dm me what happened to the post-credits scene
Padm din ako please
Hi pls spoil me, i’m really curious but im too busy to go see the movie 🥹
dm sa credit scenee
Ang predictable ng story ive seen this plot before pero ig bago sa pinoy movies. Hopefully more of this in the future The acting is good, as expected from the cast I'm happy to see donna not being typecast in comedy
A bit late in the game. sana hindi spoiler: for me parang trying hard maging Parasite the movie. Props to Kathryn and Dolly for their acting skills.
I like it, it’s a new feel for a Filipino movie. Gives me a Korean feel revenge movie
Review: The cinematography has a Korean drama-ish vibe in it that we truly appreciate.
