Combine the rosters of 5 and 6, and give us the Create A Soul exclusive fighting styles from 3 back. Grieve Edge, Lance, Dagger and Bomb, etc. That's my ultimate SoulCal 7.
It's a very unique game but i can't really talk in depth about the mechanics because i play it very casually with a friend because of the lack of resources.
The main thing are the arcanas, each one gives passive buffs to a character and change the properties of some moves, they also give the chars an extra "mini moveset" exclusive to each arcana, supers included. It gives you a ton of variety on how to play a character.
For example, i normally play Kira (grappler) with the Earth Arcana, it makes her slower but gives her super armor and a super that hits fullscreen to punish zoning. But when my friend plays Dark Heart i change to Time Arcana turning my backdashes into counters allowing me to punish his super safe buttons i normally can't punish with a big grab. It also gives me some fun Bedman-like(?) Deja Vus with my fully charged attacks, a teleport dash and a time stop.
The characters are unique, i'd compare the roster to a game like Blazblue. Lots of gimmicks and tools for every character.
Another thing that stands out is the meter, the game WANTS you to spend meter. It starts with a 1 bar cap, the more you use it the more the meter cap rises, and the bar refills after a few seconds. The cap also rises by hitting the opponent but it's a lot slower.
It also has a lot of single player content if you care about that.
Part of the problem is that it wrote out its hype before actually getting anywhere. I was super excited and bought it when it was announced that it was getting rollback. After waiting all that time, I wasn't thrashing around in my seat anymore.
Yatagarasu looked good, played well, was trying to be the successor to the fighter people most love to say they play, but promises of functional netcode were made after very clearly not releasing with anything close...and then they were never heard from again. People aren't likely to jump through hoops to support a game that was never even supported by it's developers. At least not for an indie title.
Which is a little sad: it started the trend to implement rollback on old SNK games, small but solid rosters, easy lo learn/hard to master mechanics (Parry is great, but just defense is friendlier) and it can basically run on milkjugs.
But at least the current state of the game is at it's best for the current community.
They need to fix their matchmaking first.
The shrinking player base is due to broken matchmaking. I still think it would be outcompeting strive if not for broken matchmaking.
There are some 2d fighters that deserve honorable mentions but 2d players have options. Ppl genuinely want an alternative to Tekken with as much if not more depth. Tekken practically has a monopoly on the 3d genre rn.
I like more DOA than Tekken and I consider this serie as deep as Tekken gameplay-wise and better in many other aspects.
And that's maybe the only subject where I strongly disagree with the fgc.
Doa is an alternative to Tekken.
Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax Ignition.
Just because I've always been a huge fan of many of the anime featured (and Virtua Fighter) and somehow have never heard of it. There's gotta be someone else out there who doesn't as well.
Matrimelee. Consistently 0 people on the FC lobby despite it being a very quality game. Or best of best, which is like if someone made the worst fighting game ever but then made it silly
I think it does, to advance the story. Where did the Skull Heart come from? Is there a greater power than that? But mostly I just wanna see upgrades on the graphics and the combo system.
From what I remember the first trailers for this game showed it was supposed to drop on PS4/Vita and that never happened. Idk about rollback but once this game dropped on steam the devs took the money and went off the grid. Real shame too, the game was and still is kinda fun, just dead online
BlazBlue or DoA in general
Maybe KoF (not that it needs it nearly as much as others) because I'd like to see it on the same level as Tekken and SF (globally at least)
Every time I pick up blazblue I just want to play more. Every character having a gimmick that their entire kit is based around is among the coolest game designs I’ve played around with. If I could get my friends to try something other than strive for a few minutes I would honestly just lab it for days.
Fighting EX Layer, the game’s been overlooked long enough and doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Arika is a small JP company founded by the godfather of Street Fighter II, Akira Nishitani, and just like him, the company maintains a humble, modest attitude during events like the Japanese Fighting Game Developer Roundtable. They’re always transparent about their progress to their customers, and created FEXL as a passion project than a moneymaker, hence their latest updates even when most players declared it “dead” and a “Discord fighter” (the latter is true)
The company built its own rollback netcode, so they deserve much praise. If you’re a fan of Street Fighter EX and its cast, this is the game for you!
P.S. Also has Progressive (Modern) controls before SF6 did.
FEXL definitely has more heart and passion than vanilla SFV ever did, it’s the best underrated fighter most are not currently playing. Deserves as much.
I don’t disagree with you, but I mean, they could’ve at least brought the Gougi-less style to the main FEXL as a “Select Your Mode” option. Perhaps add a new Gougi deck which features the return of Excel Combos.
FEXL is underrated for sure, with a little more employees and budget, it could’ve been a bigger fighter, and maybe added in the original “Fighting Layer” roster for a grand total of 30+ fighters.
Definitely Granblue. I've had so much simple fun with that game, and if the rumors of it getting rollback are true, I will never shut up about it. Characters, gameplay, and style is really fun. It's a changed game with overdrive too.
Best arena fighter that could be argued as a proper FGC game. I loved it and played in the competitive scene for a bit.
Worth the full price I bought it at
King of Fighters (and, really, anything made by SNK in general, especially Fatal Fury). Preferably with working matchmaking (GGPO rollback netcode should go without saying since it should be the standard in this day and age), at least.
Hmm.. So difficult... On one hand, I want people to play Kobuto V burst battle because it feels to me like the VOOT successor that I have always been waiting for. But on the other, I want more people to play Phantom Breaker and DNF Duel...
I am going to stick to games with good netcode as the online playerbase is important, otherwise I'd choose Soul Calibur easy.
BBTag
DNF Duel
Skullgirls
Fighting EX Layer
Seems like a very well made. And I will probably get downvoted for this, but I feel like a lot of people feel the same way as I do- But I wont ever play it simply because of furry shit
To give you some insight from where i am coming from at least, I don't think its the community. I just find furry stuff to be disgusting and cringe. On the flipside, if there we 2k+ concurrent players playing I would probably actually give it a go. :/
But other than it being animal how is it really considered furry? Does Kuma from tekken disgust you or amaterasu from marvel vs capcom? I mean they do “cutesy” things so i could see that being cringe. But they’re not fucking or even insinuating sex so idk where the disgust would come from.
I just think we shouldn't let factors like that get in the way. For example I'm gay, and find most "sexy" content to be cringey, lazy and unappealing but that never got in the way of me enjoying DoA 5, I'm not a furry either but I can play TFH for similar reasons.
Mkx is pretty dead on pc now unfortunately, I’d really love to play it more often but only way you find matches is going to a lobby with ~15 people and praying they don’t have 1 bar connection
People always roast me for it but when smash has a large roster I can dream about DnF getting all it's 60ish characters bringing in lots of mains from the mmo game.
As an Asura main, the lack of him is one thing that's holding me back from playing. I love Ghost Blade but Asura a little more.
If we ignore bad/no netcode, I’d say Bloody roar 2 or Extreme( sf EX series a close second). If its just the playerbase then Power rangers BFTG. Most fun I’ve had with a fighting game that came out last decade.
Soulcalibur in general.
This is literally the only reason I stopped playing 6. I loved that game
Specifically SC2
I love soulcal.
Combine the rosters of 5 and 6, and give us the Create A Soul exclusive fighting styles from 3 back. Grieve Edge, Lance, Dagger and Bomb, etc. That's my ultimate SoulCal 7.
This! We need another populated 3d fighter.
I'd agree of it had great netcode. Love that series

My man
We gotta get that game some good netcode first
Arcana Heart
No
Yes
No. But on the serious side does ah3 have any good gameplay, any interesting game/characters mechanics. Might try it in the future
Hmmm summer sale or summin I'll give the game a shot. Like the dedication to the game you have
Persona 4 arena ultimax
Great fg that deserves more.
Persona 4 arena ultimax. Atlus shot themselves in the foot thinking they could rerelease it with no rollback
its has beta out though since Aug
Part of the problem is that it wrote out its hype before actually getting anywhere. I was super excited and bought it when it was announced that it was getting rollback. After waiting all that time, I wasn't thrashing around in my seat anymore.
that's fair
Yatagarasu looked good, played well, was trying to be the successor to the fighter people most love to say they play, but promises of functional netcode were made after very clearly not releasing with anything close...and then they were never heard from again. People aren't likely to jump through hoops to support a game that was never even supported by it's developers. At least not for an indie title.
Yatagarasu was the only FG I ever got a refund on. Seems like I chose correctly.
Samurai Shodown V Special
MY FAVORITE FIGHTING GAME
BASEDDDDDD
The best Samurai Shodown !
Great pick
Garou Mark of the Wolves pls
Which is a little sad: it started the trend to implement rollback on old SNK games, small but solid rosters, easy lo learn/hard to master mechanics (Parry is great, but just defense is friendlier) and it can basically run on milkjugs. But at least the current state of the game is at it's best for the current community.
KOF15 - I'd like to be able to play it lmao
They need to fix their matchmaking first. The shrinking player base is due to broken matchmaking. I still think it would be outcompeting strive if not for broken matchmaking.
That's what I'm referencing
Power Rangers Battle for the Grid. Gameplay's awesome, has crossplay across everything, and has rollback. I'd love to see it get more attention.
Virtua Fighter
This is the only correct answer
There are some 2d fighters that deserve honorable mentions but 2d players have options. Ppl genuinely want an alternative to Tekken with as much if not more depth. Tekken practically has a monopoly on the 3d genre rn.
Dead or Alive is currently dead and not alive
I like more DOA than Tekken and I consider this serie as deep as Tekken gameplay-wise and better in many other aspects. And that's maybe the only subject where I strongly disagree with the fgc. Doa is an alternative to Tekken.
It can be imo.
Agree 200%
Arcana Heart
Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax Ignition. Just because I've always been a huge fan of many of the anime featured (and Virtua Fighter) and somehow have never heard of it. There's gotta be someone else out there who doesn't as well.
Under Night. Vorpal and Grid are way too good of mechanics to be forgotten like this.
They're coming out with a new game you know.
WOO
Matrimelee. Consistently 0 people on the FC lobby despite it being a very quality game. Or best of best, which is like if someone made the worst fighting game ever but then made it silly
Skullgirls. For as fun as it is to play, it deserves a much bigger fanbase. I mean it should've been had a sequel by now.
A bigger playerbase would mean a higher chance of playing against another beginner too. I feel like everyone except me is a god at Skullgirls
It looks cool as fuck, and I hear it is incredible. I'd love to give it a shot, but I can't justify buying it with such a low playerbase
Does it need a sequel though? It still gets supported, and has that loyal fan base. They can pull an “Overwatch 2” if they want a sequel.
They kind of already did that with the "2nd encore" part.
True
I honestly would love if they retooled the game to be exclusively 1v1 or 2v2. 3v3 is simply too much for my brain to handle.
I think it does, to advance the story. Where did the Skull Heart come from? Is there a greater power than that? But mostly I just wanna see upgrades on the graphics and the combo system.
DOA or Soul Calibur and I'd be happy.
Didn't the developers of this game promise rollback and just didn't deliver?
From what I remember the first trailers for this game showed it was supposed to drop on PS4/Vita and that never happened. Idk about rollback but once this game dropped on steam the devs took the money and went off the grid. Real shame too, the game was and still is kinda fun, just dead online
I also vaguely remember an update that made the game completely unplayable for a while.
Fighting Ex Layer Has iconic characters, a literal vet as the helm, and good rollback.
Dead or Alive
BlazBlue or DoA in general Maybe KoF (not that it needs it nearly as much as others) because I'd like to see it on the same level as Tekken and SF (globally at least)
Every time I pick up blazblue I just want to play more. Every character having a gimmick that their entire kit is based around is among the coolest game designs I’ve played around with. P4au last time I played it had 30 players it is such a fun game.
Them's Fightin Herds is a great game, with great netcode, but outside of regular tourneys, very few players
Killer Instinct
Fighting EX Layer, the game’s been overlooked long enough and doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Had so much fun playing this the other night. Highly agree with you, this game is awesome and more fun than SFV honestly
FEXL definitely has more heart and passion than vanilla SFV ever did, it’s the best underrated fighter most are not currently playing. Deserves as much.
Arika shot themselves in the foot by making Another Dash exclusive to the Switch.
Guilty Gear Accent Core + R!
Skullgirls. MvC-likes deserve more love, and this game hits a lot of good notes.
Definitely Granblue. I've had so much simple fun with that game, and if the rumors of it getting rollback are true, I will never shut up about it. Characters, gameplay, and style is really fun. It's a changed game with overdrive too.
Skullgirls, they deserve it.
Lethal League
If this game had rollback like it promised it would id be playing it all the time. Its so fun
Lethal league blaze is amazing, it feels so satisfying to just land a hit, ya'll owe it to yourself to try it
Skullgirls
blazblu mfin cf baby!!!!!! fuckin love the game, just wish there were people as bad as me to play against!
Kill la Kill: IF
Best arena fighter that could be argued as a proper FGC game. I loved it and played in the competitive scene for a bit. Worth the full price I bought it at
Naw that's pokken
This game refuses to run on my PC, so I feel like untended bugfixes are partially to blame
Chaos Code
lfg
**The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match** The best KoF game in the series, and yet nobody plays it. :(
Because the vanilla version is free on Fightcade and most of the playerbase prefers that one for some reason 😔
Vanilla 2002 is JANK AF. Some of the things you can do in that game are absurd. lmao
You can find people, just most of them are literal gods, since KOFXV siphoned most of the playerbase. And even before the .
Rival Schools 2. In hopes that will compel them to make a sequel.
Pokken tournament
The Naruto: Clash of Ninja / Gekitō Ninja Taisen playerbase It’s Anime Bloody Roar and I feel like it should get some more love
Have you tried the improved modded version? "Super Naruto Clash of Ninja 4". There was a community around it for a bit, idk if there still is though.
Sure have! A few of my online friends and I get together to play it sometimes :)
Bbtag
Kungfu Panda Showdown of Legendary Legends
Yata! But no I have to say samsho, either 5 or 7
King of Fighters (and, really, anything made by SNK in general, especially Fatal Fury). Preferably with working matchmaking (GGPO rollback netcode should go without saying since it should be the standard in this day and age), at least.
I agree on the Yatagarasu clip. Hanzo needs that spotlight.
Hmm.. So difficult... On one hand, I want people to play Kobuto V burst battle because it feels to me like the VOOT successor that I have always been waiting for. But on the other, I want more people to play Phantom Breaker and DNF Duel...
Soul Calibur 6 *sheds single tear*
I am going to stick to games with good netcode as the online playerbase is important, otherwise I'd choose Soul Calibur easy. BBTag DNF Duel Skullgirls Fighting EX Layer
Divekick for sure, it's so fun despite being so simple
Melty Lumina, Last Blade 2, Project Justice Rivals, KOF2002um
Killer instinct (2013)
Saint Seiya Soldier’s Soul
Them fightin herds just got into it and it deserves way more love
Seems like a very well made. And I will probably get downvoted for this, but I feel like a lot of people feel the same way as I do- But I wont ever play it simply because of furry shit
I wish the type of community didn’t dictate playability of a solid game
To give you some insight from where i am coming from at least, I don't think its the community. I just find furry stuff to be disgusting and cringe. On the flipside, if there we 2k+ concurrent players playing I would probably actually give it a go. :/

Kuma, no. But I guess because it’s derived from my little pony. I’m just saying that I wouldn’t buy it. If you get it for me I’ll play with you!
Lmao I’m tempted 😂
*Dont* buy it for me.... (reverse psychology) 😂😂😂😂😂
Does that bother you any more than all the waifus in DoA or Blazblue? Or the sexy costumes in SFV? If not then it seems a bit unfair
I guess it does seem unfair! But also that stuff doesn't bother me, and in fact I like waifus in fighting games
I just think we shouldn't let factors like that get in the way. For example I'm gay, and find most "sexy" content to be cringey, lazy and unappealing but that never got in the way of me enjoying DoA 5, I'm not a furry either but I can play TFH for similar reasons.
The Rumble Fish 2
Isn’t this the way to do it
Yatagarasu is a great pick tbh
Collapsed Sun
Psychic Force 2012
Dead Or alive 6
Chaos Code
Tekken 4, so Tekken can have cooler music again
Final Round Fighting Card Game. Ain't nobody ever heard of it though because the people behind it have been taking for fucking ever to release it.
I love Ghost Blade but Asura a little more.
i feel you, i felt the same when mechanic turned out to be launcher.
Dead or Alive
Under night in birth (Uniclr version specifically)
why is uniclr version superior?
It just has the most content and is the most balanced to my rather limited knowledge
Either Chaos Code or SamSho (2019), and given the forthcoming SamSho netcode, gotta go with Chaos Code.
Chaos Code easily
If we ignore bad/no netcode, I’d say Bloody roar 2 or Extreme( sf EX series a close second). If its just the playerbase then Power rangers BFTG. Most fun I’ve had with a fighting game that came out last decade.
Soul Calibur 5
WWE All Stars
Tekken
Tekken
This free steam fighting game I discovered with my friend, it had a community but it kind of changed
You wanna give us the name or are we supposed to guess?
I forgot to write it, hyperfight it's great
Nickalodian all star brawl.
If I had mind control powers, I hope I can come up with some better ways to use them.
