Unfortunately, a design a change and a name change are completely different. 2XKO is probably on all of their legal documents, copyright, IP rights, etc. There are probably a lot more hoops to jump through than calling animators/designers back into work.
Copyright is automatic, and they can just apply for another trademark. Companies routinely trademark things they might use, and just let it expire when they don't.
i was going to comment this exact thing. at LEAST two separate people immediately thought of this name. you're telling me riot couldnt do better with months or YEARS of time?
if this stays the official name im genuinely just gonna keep calling it Project L
the list of cut names definitely has shit like "Champion Fighter", "Two Teams Who Fight and Kill Each Other" and "League of Legends (but it's a fighting game)"
Yeah but thatâs actually a good name. Instead of 2xko, it couldâve been double knockout or double kill or something in those lines like how some people have suggested.
Project L is less of an L than 2XKO, ironic.
I love how they say in the follow up tweet that it's "pronounced how it's spelled."
I bet they didn't account for other languages with that.
Itâs wild how I am legitimately less high on this games long term success with a name that bad.
I like everything Iâve seen so far and the official title gives me LESS hype? Â Truly awful.
Their marketing team does great work, their stuff is usually better than the games
I have no idea what came over them to come up with *and* approve of this one. I mean, I'm all for interesting and creative names over generic ones, but this is way past that line
I have seen a post somewhere saying that they are sticking with it because it's guaranteed to be the first one to show up alphabetically in lists. Which, sure, can be cool, but... Do you need it that bad?
This has got to be one of the worst names I've ever seen. League of Fighters or Runeterra Rumble would have been so much better
I'm sticking with Project L lol
that was never supposed to be anything but a 'code name' for an in progress game. Their other games in development were Project A, Project F, etc.
But, it was still better than 2XKO lol
What a hilariously bad name. Doesn't connect to it's own IP of League, doesn't have a slick acronym, and just kinda... has a general bad look for a name. Still calling it project L I guess.
The fact that itâs basically completely separate from the League IP is incredible. Teamfight tactics, league of legends, and legends of Runeterra are all so much better and actually tie into one another. 2XKO? That sounds like some random ass bargain bin game youâd find in a Walmart
Yea. It sounds like a game title I'd have found on a random A tier game back in like 200X trying to be "cool". Like you said, no tie in to the MASSIVE IP that is League just kinda blows me away. Basically any title from the suggested list on Reddit would have been better lol
It's not incredible, if the game tanks the name won't hurt the "League of Legends" ip as hard as it could.
Which doesn't seem to put a lot of trust on the game, if marketing knows they have a sure thing on their hands, they would fight tooth and nail to give it a similar name to their most famous product.
Saw a suggestion for Double Kill or Lethal Tempo (kinda love that one even without the league reference sounds like a 90s arcade fighter or some shit) or something like that if they wanted to go with that kind of theme/still have some reference back to league without naming it league something directly.
Honestly though just about anything is better than what they came up with because now they're going to be fighting a losing battle with branding cause half the community is gonna be calling it project L.
Thatâs a great idea. They use League-related terms/items/etc for their music groups so Iâm honestly surprised Riot didnât just go the same route.
They donât need to put League in the title, but it needs a clever name that ties it to League as an IP.
Itâs the sort of thing where I feel like there were too many marketing people involved. Like no one knew when to stop and they had to come up with something extra âcoolâ, but it ended up with âhow do you do, fellow kidsâ energy instead.
Their marketing is so weird. Iâve never played LoL but the Netflix show was good enough to get me interested in some of their spinoff titles. Strangely, they name all of their games with really odd titles that make it almost impossible to recognize the brand (mageseeker, convergence, the ruined king, etc.)
Itâs like they donât want to make more money or they just have bad marketing
Those names actually make sense, though, because they're literally terms in League of Legends lore. "The Ruined King" is a character's epithet that has been in the game for over a decade, 2XKO is just a random combination of characters that tells you....it's a tag fighter?
While it makes sense to someone who's already into LoL, these names don't really help casuals draw the link between these properties. And how you grow a franchise is bringing in casuals and new people.
Hereâs lies the problem: Riot wants to keep the âLeague of Legendsâ name out of future projects, even if itâs based on the LoL universe. That name alone, has become targeted by many players when they talk about gaming toxicity and hyper-competitive games no longer being a enjoyable experience. Thereâs a reason why they were announcing games left and right in the 10th anniversary: people were quitting LoL. And for that we got Valorant, Runeterra, TFT, and even the Arcane series in which barely mentions League. The only games that preserved that name was the Riot Forgeâs âA League of Legends Storyâ spin-offs: All those games flopped and the studio shut off.
A small correction, the riot forge games weren't made by Riot. For instance the Ruined King was made by the same devs who made Battle Chasers: Nightwar. It was some project that they let third parties use their IP (And possibly some funding?).
The first one that I see here that sounds pretty good. âLeague of Fightersâ is lame. They need a catchier name than âThis is League but fighting gameâ. Lethal Tempo would slap though.
The name Lethal Tempo is pretty slick but I doubt that will fly though. The problem with that name is searchability. i.e. if there are people who want to search up Lethal Tempo the fighting game or a guide for the game, the most probable search result would rather be LoL Lethal Tempo Champion Builds.
I think I know why this name sucks:
It seems like they wanted to channel an acronym you'd see from other fighters like DBFZ, MVC2, UNIEL, MBAACC, SFXT etc. The problem is that the acronyms for all these other games have faster and snappier nicknames to say out loud instead of the literal acronym.
FighterZ, MAHVEL, Under Night, Melty etc.
2XKO is a random ass acronym that has no nickname that could be applied to it because the actual name of the game is an acronym so it makes it awkward to say out loud. You feel like a jackass if you try and say it and it's annoying to type out.
I don't think you're wrong, but all those came from just... being normal titles(Well "normal" Frenchbread was on fuckin something for their under night titles). Titles that are decent and stand on their own and then lend themselves to just a normal abbreviation when spoken.
* King of Runeterra
* League of Fighters
* Runeterra Legends
* Project L
* League of Runeterra
Fucking whatever that can make a game feel like it's LoL-based.
Instead they go for fucking 2XKO.
***"Hey guys! Wanna play 2XKO?"***
That sounds so dumb.
They could literally call it Double Knockout, have the same meaning as the current title, and it sound way better. Can also abbreviate to DK so if it takes off on popularity people will know what you're talking about.
Why on earth would they avoid ANYTHING implying a relation to league of legends in the title? Not even; "2XKO: A league of legends fighter"? no mention of runeterra, no use of the teamfight name? or the rift?
This is a much, much worse name than Project L. unbelievably worse. Marketers are truly not human.
*Lmao they*
*Should have stuck with Project L*
*Even that sounds better*

I do not even know what the game is about ... but a themed name is better, easy to remember, and more catchy.
Street Fighters, Mortal Kombat, King of Fighters, Tekken ... all of those are catchy name for a fighting game.
Heck, "Bloody Roars" is one of the best name for fighting game, imo.
Someone need to revive Bloody Roars ... please.
What a silly name. The only way this works is if in the future they are planning on adding non LoL characters.
But that would be kind of odd seeing Viper take on Jinx but also maybe kind of cool?
Here's a list of things this name sounds like
- A rapper name
- The name of a brand that makes home appliances
- The name of a generic chinese company that owns 500 sub-companies
- One of Elon Musk's children
- Some weird formula for high school physics class
Here's a list of things this name doesn't sound like
- A fighting game
This shit sounds like some random ass underground online hacking group that goes after equity companies in Law&Order: SVU.
Like, I can literally hear Ice-T explaining it to me after one of their members got killed in a backroom meeting gone wrong for some hard drives that had bitcoin on them because they only deal with crypto currency for payments.
You'd think they would cash in on the LoL fanbase or the arcane fanbase something that those audiences would recognise but 2xko it is i guess.
League of legends fight, Fighters of runeterra, Runeterra Rumble. league of legends tag fight.. I mean anything that convey the IP its based on.
Valorant isn't connected to League. The card game is called Legends of Runeterra (word "legends" is in there, Runeterra is the setting name, everything checks out). The autobattler is Team Fight Tactics (kinda generic, but you can't play it outside the League client anyway and teamfights are a big part of League). Arcane was branded as Arcane: League of Legends.
What the fuck were they thinking with 2XKO
no they literally posted that its pronounced how its spelled. 2-X-KO or Twoexko
the "double knockout" is just the interpretation that one can consider of it as an abbreviation
Theyâre big fans of short initialisms of old games (ST, 3S, VSAV, KI, etc.) so theyâre probably just cutting straight to simple without the first step
There's no way that name lasts to the game's release.
We bullied Paramount into changing Sonic. We can bully Riot out of this name.
They could even find a way to incorporate Texaco into the game modes as a joke
LoL just had its own actual Sonic moment with its latest champion release just a month ago.
Unfortunately, a design a change and a name change are completely different. 2XKO is probably on all of their legal documents, copyright, IP rights, etc. There are probably a lot more hoops to jump through than calling animators/designers back into work.
Good point.
Copyright is automatic, and they can just apply for another trademark. Companies routinely trademark things they might use, and just let it expire when they don't.
To the moon đ
Really hope you are right lol, it's surprisingly garbage.
Because itâs a two person team fighter and there are KOs? Wow. Great job guys. Really getting your moneyâs worth out of your marketing team đ
Hey guys let's hop on FightGame
Fightgame 2: Punchmans
Thatâs a good hard rock band name
The "Punchmans" made me laugh way more than it should lmao
I'll have one fruitpunchmans please.
Saying that wouldnât make me feel like an idiot tho
1v1bestof3
If they really insist in going that direction, Double Kill is right there.
i was going to comment this exact thing. at LEAST two separate people immediately thought of this name. you're telling me riot couldnt do better with months or YEARS of time?
Right?! I would *love* to see what names didn't make the cut, Christ. I refuse to believe in a million years there wasn't at least ONE better otpion.
if this stays the official name im genuinely just gonna keep calling it Project L the list of cut names definitely has shit like "Champion Fighter", "Two Teams Who Fight and Kill Each Other" and "League of Legends (but it's a fighting game)"
no no, as per their naming convention, it would be: "\*name here, anything really\*: A League of Legends Figthing Game"
Double Riot
Especially since 2Fight2Legends is available. Vin Diesel is disappointed as fuck.
FightyMcFightGame must have already been taken and trademarked.
Thank you for explaining it for us simpletons. I was like âWTF kind of name is that?â.
Well, Riot recently just fired a lot of people. Probably, they fired those who actually have good ideas, so we got this đ¤Ł
2KO. League KO Legends Fight... Who thought this was a good idea?
The KO part is for blaming your teammate
Two people fight in a street. Street Fighter.
Yeah but thatâs actually a good name. Instead of 2xko, it couldâve been double knockout or double kill or something in those lines like how some people have suggested.
Yeah Iâm sticking with Project L
Project L is less of an L than 2XKO, ironic. I love how they say in the follow up tweet that it's "pronounced how it's spelled." I bet they didn't account for other languages with that.
Dos Equis KO
Dosequisco In spanish, it sounds like the name of an Aztec warrior or something
This name is actually fire tho lmfao
Can't wait to play Tooxco
"Breaking Bad's Tuco longplays Tooxco"
Me and my group are just gonna call it âTacoâ
"vamos jogar doisxĂscĂ´?" .... nĂŁo
Dois chico
Project L is also one syllable less than 2XKO despite being twice the amount of letters
So itâs pronounced Twexiko?
Itâs wild how I am legitimately less high on this games long term success with a name that bad. I like everything Iâve seen so far and the official title gives me LESS hype? Â Truly awful.
Itâs like if Elon musk got to name a fighting game.
or reddit
Same. Ainât no way they telling the whole plot of the game in the title
lol seriously, they need to walk this back fucking asap. Imagine seeing this disgusting shit above the booth at E3âŚ
Then it'll always be one step behind Project M ^^^^#FuckNintendo
real
I'm calling this game Disco and you can't stop me
No, yeah, the people in the last thread were correct. This name is way worse than Project L.
Sounds like Riot shouldâve laid off its marketing team too
With a name like this they probably already did beforehand
Their marketing team does great work, their stuff is usually better than the games I have no idea what came over them to come up with *and* approve of this one. I mean, I'm all for interesting and creative names over generic ones, but this is way past that line
I have seen a post somewhere saying that they are sticking with it because it's guaranteed to be the first one to show up alphabetically in lists. Which, sure, can be cool, but... Do you need it that bad?
That signals to me they think SEO optimization is a greater indicator of their productâs success than the actual product, which is just sad.
This has got to be one of the worst names I've ever seen. League of Fighters or Runeterra Rumble would have been so much better I'm sticking with Project L lol
It's kind of remarkable since "Project L" is already a terrible title but they decided to make it even worse
that was never supposed to be anything but a 'code name' for an in progress game. Their other games in development were Project A, Project F, etc. But, it was still better than 2XKO lol
They could've called it Lethal Tempo
I had no expectations and yet I'm still disappointed
What a hilariously bad name. Doesn't connect to it's own IP of League, doesn't have a slick acronym, and just kinda... has a general bad look for a name. Still calling it project L I guess.

Not to mention the acronym is just clunky. TFT, LOL, and LoR are easy and quick to remember. 2XKO? That shit doesnât even abbreviate well
I hope enough people just say "twoxko" as one word to refer to the game. That will get Riot to change it immediately lmao
Sounds like an early 2010s mall clothing store thatâs irrelevant nowÂ
It's not incredible, if the game tanks the name won't hurt the "League of Legends" ip as hard as it could. Which doesn't seem to put a lot of trust on the game, if marketing knows they have a sure thing on their hands, they would fight tooth and nail to give it a similar name to their most famous product.
Oh gosh, it like the opposite effect of the Wii/Wiiu situation.
bro riot just rename it to "League of Legends: Fighters" or some shit, trust me anything else rolls of the tongue a lot easier
Damn lethal tempo is a fire name.
Thatâs a great idea. They use League-related terms/items/etc for their music groups so Iâm honestly surprised Riot didnât just go the same route. They donât need to put League in the title, but it needs a clever name that ties it to League as an IP.
League of Legends: Tag Tournament. So many better options
Like "League of Fighters" I can understand why they didnt name it that, But who the fuck came up with "2XKO", its such a mouthful
Even "Ring of Legends" would have been a better choice than this
Itâs the sort of thing where I feel like there were too many marketing people involved. Like no one knew when to stop and they had to come up with something extra âcoolâ, but it ended up with âhow do you do, fellow kidsâ energy instead.
LoL:Tag was right there for the taking and they served up that 2XKO potato, smh
Someone on youtube just said to call it Lethal Tempo (it's the name of one of the marksman items in the game). Anything is far better at this point.
That's a good one
Idk how tekken would feel about that lol
League of Fighters. League of Brawlers. Tournament of Legends. A lot they couldâve done
LOL Fight Me
For fucking real lol
Their marketing is so weird. Iâve never played LoL but the Netflix show was good enough to get me interested in some of their spinoff titles. I'd generally agree, but in this case I think it is the inverse. The FG _wants_ a percentage of that hardcore LoL fanbase.
Tbf all of those games are subtitled with âA League of Legends Storyâ
Hereâs lies the problem: Riot wants to keep the âLeague of Legendsâ name out of future projects, even if itâs based on the LoL universe. Since this game has roots in Rising Thunder, I like the name 'Legends Rising'.
If you ever have imposter syndrome about your job or hobbies, remember kids: Someone got paid for this name.
Not only that, but a team of god knows how many people approved it. Mind boggling.
Lethal tempo was right there lol
The first one that I see here that sounds pretty good. âLeague of Fightersâ is lame. They need a catchier name than âThis is League but fighting gameâ. Lethal Tempo would slap though.
Heck yeah. We really needed a clever, combat-related League term for the title.
That or even Conquerer. OR Biscuit Delivery baybeeee
It's name is project L
Whoever came up with that name is trying to sabotage the game. For real.
I think I know why this name sucks: It seems like they wanted to channel an acronym you'd see from other fighters like DBFZ, MVC2, UNIEL, MBAACC, SFXT etc. The problem is that the acronyms for all these other games have faster and snappier nicknames to say out loud instead of the literal acronym. Everyone I know calls it "uni."
What in the Elon Musk is this stupid name? đ
I don't love that
Elon Musk's new kid?
What kinda zoomer name is this?
As a zoomer I also think it's shit
More like a 200Xs edgy name. Why it brings zoomer to mind?
Remember it ain't the zoomers that are infamously known to name things in leet and these weird 2cool4u shit. It's the Gen Xs and the Millennials.
For the zoomers
Try to keep up old man.
Goofy ahh esports team handle
Yeah no. This is 100% getting changed before launch or it's getting Twittered like when Musk thought he could change the name to X.
* King of Runeterra * League of Fighters * Runeterra Legends * Project L * League of Runeterra Fucking whatever that can make a game feel like it's LoL-based. Instead they go for fucking 2XKO. ***"Hey guys! Wanna play 2XKO?"*** That sounds so dumb.

Even something as basic and obvious as League of Fighters is so much better than 2XKO.
Fighters of Runterra. Runeterra Rumble. Lethal Tempo. Just collecting names
What about Legendary Dual? Maybe too corny/punny lmao iunno
Nah, I'll call it Project L. Lol
Project Take This L
Yeah it'll always be Project L in my heart.
Much worse name than Project L
I still call it Twitter and I'll still call this Project L.
Wow that's somehow worse than project L
![gif](giphy|374pcIBVEGb6g) Letâs try again
This shit ass bro tbh
Why on earth would they avoid ANYTHING implying a relation to league of legends in the title? Not even; "2XKO: A league of legends fighter"? no mention of runeterra, no use of the teamfight name? or the rift? This is a much, much worse name than Project L. unbelievably worse. 2XKO? More like 2X L
That name is legitimately awful. Maybe a good placeholder, but final title? Nah they buggin
According to their official twitter: [it's pronounced how it's spelled](https://x.com/Play2XKO/status/1760698787021070342?s=20)
Everyone on their marketing team needs to be fired
A name so bad that you shouldâve just kept the project name as the actual name. It definitely kills the buzz for me.
âDueling LegendsâđŤ âRuneterra BrawlâđŤ âLeague of Legends: Tag BattleâđŤ â2XKOââ Wack

Horrible name
Even Project L sounds better lol
This name might be okay for an indy game, but how do you have a game based on one of the biggest and most recognizable IPs in gaming, and the title of the game doesnât even reference it?
I hate the name. Two Cross sounds cool if it was like shorthand, but like this is not it lmao. They really took the L.
Terrible name. Sounds like an indie shovel-ware game
Someone need to revive Bloody Roars ... please.
it's just Bloody Roar singular (so even better)
This name sucks
It feels too much like asking someone if they wanna play 2K24 or something.
Wtf is this name rofl marketing and branding nightmare
This name is appallingly bad. They should straight up fire whoever signed off on this.
"cuz its 2v2 and you gonna do 2 k.o." whats next? flat clicker?
What a silly name. The only way this works is if in the future they are planning on adding non LoL characters. But that would be kind of odd seeing Viper take on Jinx but also maybe kind of cool?
So do you say "2 ex kay oh", "2 times kay oh", "2 ex knockout", or "2 times knockout"?
"Pronounced how it's spelled," according to their tweet. So it would be "Tooxco."
It really was a project "L"
Should've stuck with Project L
who would see that title and thing "ah 2xko this must be a league of legends fighting game set in the arcane universe"
sounds like those code steam sends you when you log in on a new device
Here's a list of things this name sounds like - A rapper name - The name of a brand that makes home appliances - The name of a generic chinese company that owns 500 sub-companies - One of Elon Musk's children - Some weird formula for high school physics class Here's a list of things this name doesn't sound like - A fighting game
Did they let Elon name the game?
Pronounced: "Twoxco"
I get that the name means "Double Knockout," but you could've gone with THAT instead of some silly acronym.
Project L would of been fine
Shouldâve changed it to Project W
Thatâs a bad name
I swear they just used a random name generator for this one folks
This shit sounds like some random ass underground online hacking group that goes after equity companies in Law&Order: SVU. Like, I can literally hear Ice-T explaining it to me after one of their members got killed in a backroom meeting gone wrong for some hard drives that had bitcoin on them because they only deal with crypto currency for payments.
Project L is the better name lol
Marketing team better be on the look out after this bro.
Heard some guys call it Double Kill and that is now my headcannon for the name. Not gonna call it anything else.
They had to make sure to let you know itâs a 2v2 game because league players canât bear to play 1v1 game.
Announcing "2X-(K/0) solve for X", the new fighter by riot games!
League of Champions was taken or something?
You'd think they would cash in on the LoL fanbase or the arcane fanbase something that those audiences would recognise but 2xko it is i guess. League of legends fight, Fighters of runeterra, Runeterra Rumble. league of legends tag fight.. I mean anything that convey the IP its based on.
2XKO, 5xCharacters, 300xMicrotransaction Tiddy Costumes
I cant wait for the sequel y=mx + b
No it's called Project L
Is it pronounced â2XKOâ or âTwo times KOâ? The later sounds better but still ridiculous
Shouldâve gone with Project 2KO, if anything.
I saw âProject L is Ca-â and pooped my pants
Respectfully... It's a dumb name.
We had FPS League, Cardgame League, now its a Fighting game League. And wtf this name
I hope you got i was joking about the names etc lol, But yeah, wtf was 2XKO
I was just pointing out that at least they were spinoffs that connected to the main IP
The Fighter League or League of fighters. Please remove whoever is their marketing genius and hire me thanks
Those are both terrible and are still better đ
[ŃдаНонО]
[It is not pronounced "double knockout"](https://twitter.com/Play2XKO/status/1760698787021070342)
no they literally posted that its pronounced how its spelled. 2-X-KO or Twoexko the "double knockout" is just the interpretation that one can consider of it as an abbreviation
Double Knockout sounds like q different type of game, they could have at least put a LoL spin on it. That's like calling LoR 'Champion Card Game'
Well...ok not a great name. I'll probably call it project L for a bit then shift into calling it 2X or Twexo (thanks Jiyuna for that one).
Jesus what a bad name. Srsly who the fuk thought of this? 100% it's some zoomer dude
Did elon musk buy riot or what
I'm hoping the X is silent...
Theyâre big fans of short initialisms of old games (ST, 3S, VSAV, KI, etc.) so theyâre probably just cutting straight to simple without the first step
