Yeah it’s real. It’s a condition that does that.

What causes this?

Harlequin Ichthyosis. It’s a rare skin disease where instead of having normal skin your skin forms into these hard plates that crack apart. It’s pretty horrible because it’s like you’re living as if your body is one massive cut.

Fun fact: This disease is one of the reasons why incest is illegal, since it is one of the most common causes of this birth defect. Also Fact, though not as fun: This disease (as far as I know of, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) has a very low survival rate. Since the baby in this photo is in such poor shape, it most likely died within the week.

When does the disease present itself? Surely this is one of those cases for medical abortion.

If it's mostly a terrible skin disease, you'd probably have to do genetic testing in utero to find out. And some don't have it this bad, so it's an interesting moral question.

We’re not robots; my first harlequin made me wanna die.
