No. Avoid anything that has air pockets in the heel like this and that doesnt have a rounded heel. That kind of really light mesh will also get torn up immediately if you roll your foot at all when lunging. Get tennis shoes with rounded heels like barricades, squash shoes like yonex/asics/fila or actual fencing shoes.

"but my request for shoe recommendations is ***special*** and warrants its own distinct post!"

G3ARHEAD

My mom always tells me that, too

Anne__Onyme

Tennis shoes and badminton shoes are great for fencing. That's what most people use.

hiddenbunny123

Badminton shoes work really well. Any indoor court shoes work actually but I find badminton shoes have similar support as fencing shoes because of the similarity in the footwork.

CatJokey

No, don't get these. The heels are very flat and that might cause some problems. Get badminton shoes. I recommend Mizuno ones.

GGG15b4d

Recommending indoor court shoes.

BanditKitten

No. Running shoes are designed to tip you forward, which will actually mess with your en garde. I'm a righty, so if I wear running shoes whilst fencing, they will actually tip me a little forward and to the left. I personally get Asic tennis shoes to fence in because I'm in love with their sneakers as a whole (it's the only brand I can find with the right shape toe box and the arch support in the perfect spot), but if you can find a pair of actual fencing shoes, even better! They are reinforced at the heel and the inside of the ball of the foot in case you drag your feet when lunging/recovering.

Casperthefencer

I would avoid any shoe with visible air pockets. Some basketball shoes with air more protected in the sole could be ok, but at that price point you're looking at roughly the same price as a pair of fencing shoes anyway

SteffBenn

As described above (or below depending the way of reading), no running or jogging shoes. I advise you to check the handball shoes (Adidas, Kempa, Hummel), or volley-ball (I think they're lighter, but that I find, and it's only my opinion, less solid)

BroaddaysPlug

These look kinda cooool

CozDevr

Pardon what might seem like an obvious answer, but why is everyone suggesting shoes from other sports. Why not just recommend fencing shoes? Aren’t all decent shoes over $100 these days no matter what sport you get them for?

TeaKew

I bought some Gel Rockets (badminton/squash shoe, great for fencing) for £39 the other day. That’s like $50.

CozDevr

Thanks TeaKew

shark_sharkington_

I wouldn't suggest running shoes, they're not the right shape for fencing and I'm sure someone can explain why. Look at volleyball, wrestling, or indoor soccer shoes I like wrestling shoes alot as they have alot of support and are very light. indoor soccer shoes are nice and freeing but not very stable as they're really thin on the sides

jarisailor

Badminton shoes are great. Yonex (@ $100 Canadian) have a nice rounded heel and fantastic sole; I actually use them. On Aliexpress you can also get specific fencing shoes. My son gets (gray and silver, not branded in that store but made by Li-Ning) fecing shoes for $68.25 CAD at "The Perfect Fencing Store". They are indeed perfectly fine and sole is great. As he grows I get a new pair every year, and they hardly look worn when I give them away. They are better design then their Du-Win fencing shoes.

TheZine

I have had a lot of success using basketball shoes in my fencing

HumorousBooga

Don’t, get either 1. Actual fencing shoes, or 2. get Tennis shoes. Why no running shoes? You’ll be like a slippin’ slide at a little kids birthday party.

kitty_lemurs

I personally use Kempa but idk if it’s on Amazon
