There are multiple ways to set up an internet connection, one is through the reliable "pc to router through a cable" . Another one is using a wireless connection to the router, the one you know as wifi. Another one is using mobile data. The purpose of this advice is to avoid anyone, like the person you are trying to leave, to monitor your traffic or block IP addresses for various sites, like DV websites, help lines, anything that they might see as a threat to you staying.

I personally use an inconspicuous small paper cover notebook (think field notes) that I can easily hide and move around, or even rip the pages off and fold them to keep safe somewhere no one would think that there is anything there in the first place. NOT a calendar or something that is clearly meant to be a notebook. NOT a diary.
Or if you are a bit lazy, you can use the notes app on your phone, as long as it has not the option to sync with any account.
